Abstract:This study investigated the glueless preparation of biomass board using rape straw on a laboratory scale. The board-making process was broken down into four steps: soaking, refining, shape recovery, and hot-pressing. To observe the effect of pressure during the hot-press stage on the strength of the bio-board, five panels were manufactured at various pressures. Moreover, density functional theory (DFT) was used to explore how varying the pressure influenced the strength properties of the board. As pressure increased, the density of these five panels changed from 0.95 to 1.12 g/cm(3). The mechanical tests showed that the bending rupture strength of these panels changed from 43 to 53 MPa, while the tensile rupture strength changed from 27 to 33 MPa. The bending strength of these biomass boards performed well enough to qualify them as Type-35 board, and their density classified them as hardboard, according to the Japanese industrial standards (JIS). This study showed that board-making was feasible using rape straw. The experimental results and the density functional theory results were consistent, in that the mechanical properties of the panels improved with increasing pressure. The DFT method was shown to be useful in exploring the factors that influenced the strength properties of the biomass board on the microscopic scale.

Abstract:The present study is an attempt to review the history of super hybrid rice breeding in China and abroad and an introduction to advancement in super hybrid rice breeding in China.At present,a great breakthrough in utilizing subspecies heterosis of indica and japonica rice and plant type breeding has been obtained in super hybrid rice breeding in China,and super hybrid rice has been extended for large scale cultivation.But,there are many problems existing in super hybrid rice cultivation,such as poorer adaptability,lower seed setting rate,bad grain quality,worse resistance to biotic and abiotic stresses,fewer double-cropping super rice varieties(combinations),imperfect breeding theory and technology.Therefore,some suggestions and research prospects have been put forward for overcoming these problems.

Abstract:Crop straw, as a widely used biomass resource, can be processed to produce renewable energy and green products. However, about 70% of straw were burned in the open air, causing serious environmental pollution and air pollution. In order to reduce the burden on the environment, the different straw management strategies are comparatively studied and evaluated by applying the life-cycle assessment (LCA) method. Within the system boundary from cradle to grave, three alternative scenarios, including straw particleboard, straw cement-bonded particleboard, and straw direct combustion power generation, are compared with the current common treatment (straw open burning). The comprehensive inventory analysis on each treatment scenario is carried out in-depth, and the corresponding resource consumption and environmental impact of each treatment scenario are calculated, respectively. The LCA results showed that the environmental impacts of reusing crop straw to produce straw particleboard and cement-bonded particleboard (Scenario 1 and Scenario 2) is significantly reduced by 6% and 10%, by comparison with the use of wood resource. Greenhouse gas emissions from straw direct combustion power generation (Scenario 3) processes are reduced by 30% compared with coal power generation. From the environmental point of view, the scenario of straw particleboard product has the smallest impact on the environment, while straw open burning is not an advisable way due to the highest environmental impact from the highest greenhouse gas emissions and acidification effects. From the perspective of energy consumption, the energy consumption for the combustion power generation is the smallest in all scenarios. It is suggested that governments are supposed to construct reasonable scenarios for the straw disposition based on the local development status and condition. The research results can provide scientific guidance for the management strategy of the comprehensive utilization of straw resources.

Abstract:A binderless board was produced from mechanically dissociated compost straw via suction filtration. The binderless board was applied to replace the topsoil that is currently used predominantly as the substrate for rice seedlings in China. The binderless board showed the highest tensile strength when the rice straw had been composted for 20 days. The bulk density, aeration, and total porosity of the binderless board showed an increasing trend with composting time, due to the increased decomposition of rice straw. The examination of the growth parameters and root morphology of the rice seedlings showed that electrical conductivity (EC), pH, and nutrient content of the binderless board made from rice straw composted for 10 days were conducive to the growth of seedlings. Polyphenols inhibited rice seedling height and shoot weight and promoted the rice seedling stem diameter and root weight. Considering the quality loss, growth index, and the strength of the binderless board, 10 days of composting is the optimal condition. These results indicate that binderless board can replace top soil and peat when used as the substrate for rice seedling.

Abstract:Alternative resources as substitute for wood raw materials has increased in the particleboard industry because of the depletion of forest resources. Studies of particleboard using wood residues and agricultural by-products have examined wheat straw, rice straws, husks, bagasse, walnut/almond shells, and palm trunks. Rice husk is the by-product in rice milling operation with an approximately 20 percent of the total weight of the paddy grain being processed. Despite the abundant nature of this waste product and its unique physical and chemical properties, it is not being fully harnessed in Nigeria. Only a little portion of the rice husk produced is utilized in a meaningful way, the remainder is burnt into ashes or dumped as a solid waste with little being used in animal feed formulation. Particle board was produced from rice husk, an agro-waste and cement as binder. Physical and mechanical properties of the board were determined. The results show that, the percentage of thickness swelling and water absorption increased with increase in proportion of the binder to the rice husk. The Modulus of elasticity (MOE) values increase with increased mixing ratio for both the board thickness, while MOR values decrease with increase in mixing ratio for both particle sizes. Since the construction industry is a growing one, the use of renewable resources such as rice husk can reduce the strain on forest resource and form an excellent replacement for wood and wood based composite materials.

Abstract:As an important industry of the national economy, the development of furniture manufacturing industry is very rapid. In particular, with the development of panel furniture industry, wood-based panels have become a necessary choice for furniture material for modern families in recent years. As a new particleboard material, in order to be more widely used in the furniture industry, it is not enough to have the characteristics of environmental protection. The material should also have excellent appearance and dimensional stability, so as to change people’s dependence on traditional wood-based panels. In this study, the rice straw particleboard (RSP) substrate was veneered by Betula sp. and Cyclobalanopsis glauca. In the process of veneering, different RSP specimens were treated by different sanding thicknesses and moisture contents of the RSP substrate, glue spread, species and thickness of veneer. The dimensional stability of different RSP specimens after veneering was analyzed. Based on the same variables, the change in the panel dimension and warp degree of the specimens of RSP which the sanding thickness was 0.2 mm were higher than the specimens with a sanding thickness of 0.6 mm. The dimensional stability of specimens of Cyclobalanopsis glauca veneer was better than that of Betula sp. veneer. A certain degree of change within the appropriate moisture content had a little effect on dimensional stability of veneered RSP. The greater of the amount of glue, the worse the dimensional stability of veneered RSP. The thinner the veneer, the worse was the dimensional stability of the veneered RSP.

Abstract:As an important technology to improve the quality and yield of farmland crops, mulching film has been used in batches of the cultivation of many field crops. However, with people's attention to environmental problems gradually in recent years, the environmental pollution of traditional plastic mulch makes it unable to be the first choice of field crop cultivation. In response to this problem, the application and research of degradable mulch represented by paper mulch have begun to receive widespread attention. In this paper, combined with the development process of mulch, the current development status of paper mulch in the field was introduced, and the preparation method of paper mulch and the field cultivation effect of paper as mulch in different areas were discussed. The advantages and problems of paper mulch compared with plastic mulch were pointed out according to the corresponding results of literature, and the application of paper mulch in field coverage in the future was prospected.

Abstract:Abstract Rice husk and rice straw are some of abundantly available agricultural wastes that could substitute the utilization of wood as particleboard raw-materials. Nevertheless, recent studies show that rice husk and rice straw instigated low mechanical and physical properties of particleboard. Modification of rice husk and rice straw particle was investigated in order to improve particleboard properties by immersing rice husk and straw in boiling water (100°C) for 0.5, 1, 2 h and in Na 2 CO 3 (80°C) for 1 h, and combination of rice husk as face and back layers and rice straw as core layer. The boards were manufactured under pressing conditions of 200°C for 10 min used citric acid and sucrose as adhesive. Pre-treatment of 1 h boiling water of particle resulted the highest quality of all properties and satisfy the JIS 5908 (2003) requirement in Modulus of Rupture (MOR) and Internal Bonding (IB). Combining rice husk as face and back layer and rice straw as core layer resulting in IB improvement. Compared to the other adhesives, citric acid and sucrose adhesives showed better mechanical and physical properties for rice husk and rice straw particleboard manufacturing.
