Abstract:<p>Straw as an agricultural byproduct has been recognized as a potential resource. However, open-field straw burning is still the main mean in many regions of the world, which causes the wasting of resource and air pollution. Recently, many technologies have been developed for energy and resource recovery from straw, of which the biological approach has attracted growing interests because of its economically viable and eco-friendly nature. However, pretreatment of straw prior to biological processes is essential, and largely determines the process feasibility, economic viability and environmental sustainability. Thus, this review attempts to offer a critical and holistic analysis of current straw pretreatment technologies and management practices. Specifically, an integrated biological process coupled with microbial degradation and enzymatic hydrolysis was proposed, and its potential benefits, limitations and challenges associated with future large-scale straw treatment were also elaborated, together with the perspectives and directions forward.</p>

Abstract:Background: Oat has long been recognized as a good candidate for both human foods and animal feeds. However, the significance of oat, as well as its contribution to the food industry and human health, has been realized only in recent years. Due to the unique property and functionality of oat's components (e.g., proteins, starches, and beta-glucans), it has been widely used in many foods, such as bread, noodles, flakes, and milk.Scope and approach: The nutritional quality, textural property, and formation of lipid-derived off-flavors are the main challenges that disturbed current application of oat in foods. The improving strategies, including thermal and non-thermal treatments as well as bioprocessing methods for producing stable and high quality oat products, are introduced and compared.Key findings and conclusions: The overwhelming recent advances presented in this review highlighted the current state and challenges for application of oat as promising ingredient in future-food development. Processing methods, including thermal treatments, non-thermal treatments, and biotechnologies are commonly used in oat processing. Traditional thermal treatments are efficient approaches to improve the storage quality of oat prod-ucts, but sometimes may be unbeneficial to their nutritional quality. Recently, the non-thermal techniques and biotechnologies have gained more attentions for oat processing due to their mild and eco-friendly properties, which can maintain the storage stability, improve the textural property and nutritional quality of oat foods. In future, new innovative technologies should be developed for oat food production to satisfy the critical re-quirements of the food industry and consumers.

Abstract:Straw biomass is an inexpensive, sustainable, and abundant renewable feedstock for the production of valuable chemicals and biofuels, which can surmount the main drawbacks such as greenhouse gas emission and environmental pollution, aroused from the consumption of fossil fuels. It is rich in organic content but is not sufficient for extensive applications because of its natural recalcitrance. Therefore, suitable pretreatment is a prerequisite for the efficient production of fermentable sugars by enzymatic hydrolysis. Here, we provide an overview of various pretreatment methods to effectively separate the major components such as hemicellulose, cellulose, and lignin and enhance the accessibility and susceptibility of every single component. This review outlines the diverse approaches (e.g., chemical, physical, biological, and combined treatments) for the excellent conversion of straw biomass to fermentable sugars, summarizes the benefits and drawbacks of each pretreatment method, and proposes some investigation prospects for the future pretreatments.

Abstract:Straw is a common agricultural waste; its quantity is huge. In 2018, China produced 110 million tons of waste straw. The traditional way for farmers to treat straw is to burn it. However, burning straw will cause serious air pollution. At the same time, straw can be used to produce biogas via anaerobic fermentation, which is a clean and renewable energy source. Therefore, the research on anaerobic fermentation of straw is widely concerned. Straw is difficult to ferment directly because of its composite structure of lignin and cellulose. Therefore, straw needs to be pretreated. This review summarizes the previous research results in recent years on main straw pretreatment methods and factors affecting the efficiency of anaerobic fermentation of straw. In addition, the solutions to the problems existing in anaerobic fermentation of straw were put forward. This review could provide guidance for the follow-up research on anaerobic fermentation of straw.

Abstract:Corn straw is mainly composed of hemicellulose, cellulose, and lignin, which together form a crystal structure with extremely high stability. Anaerobic fermentation is an important means of straw resource utilization. Due to the complex composition of corn straw, the hydrolysis rate during anaerobic fermentation is limited, which affects the gas production efficiency. Therefore, it is necessary to pretreat corn straw. This article analyzes the advantages and disadvantages of different pretreatment methods and their applications in anaerobic digestion in order to provide optimal pathways for the pretreatment of corn straw.

Abstract:This study was conducted to investigate influence of ammonia bicarbonate treatment on the nutritive value of soybean straw.The chemical compositions of the treated and untreated straw were determined and digestibility of dry matter also measured with the nylon bag methods.Compared to the untreated straw,the content of crude protein(CP) with the ammoniated was markedly increased by 66.0 %(P < 0.01),the neutral detergent fiber(NDF) decreased by 4.7 %(P < 0.01),and the dry matter(DM) digestibility either increased by 15 %(P < 0.01).However,the content of calcium(Ca) and phosphate(P) were not effected distinctly.

Abstract:Traditional aerobic composting used for straw treatment shows limited regulation effects and unstable properties, and it is necessary to introduce some co-processing methods to optimize its performance. Herein, segmented aerobic/anaerobic fermentation, combined with chemical treatment with wood vinegar/NaOH, was used to treat wheat straw. The results showed that anaerobic fermentation when used as the first stage could stabilize the wheat straw pH between 5.19 and 6.13 and improve nutrient contents. All treatments had greater effects on substrate aeration porosities (range of 14%) than on total porosity (range of 6%), and the water-holding porosities were improved to a greater extent by NaOH than by wood vinegar. The hemicellulose degradation rate of aerobic-anaerobic treatment was higher than that achieved with anaerobic-aerobic treatment, while the latter method was more effective at removing the neutral detergent-soluble as well as remaining organic matter, which was generated due to a higher KCl content in the ash.

Abstract:Straw composting is not only a process of decomposition and re-synthesis of organic matter, but also a process of harmless treatment, avoiding air pollution caused by straw burning. Many factors, including raw materials, humidity, C/N, and microbial structure, may determine the composting process and the quality of final product. In recent years, many researches have focused on composting quality improvement by adding one or more exogenous substances, including inorganic additives, organic additives, and microbial agents. Although a few review publications have compiled the research on the use of additives in composting, none of them has specifically addressed the composting of crop straw. Additives used in straw composting can increase degradation of recalcitrant substances and provide ideal living surroundings for microorganism, and thus reduce nitrogen loss and promote humus formation, etc. This review’s objective is to critically evaluate the impact of various additives on straw composting process, and analyze how these additives enhance final quality of composting. Furthermore, a vision for future perspectives is provided. This paper can serve as a reference for straw composting process optimization and composting end-product improvement.

Abstract:Straw is a typical biomass resource which can be converted into high nutritional value feed via microbial fermentation. The degradation and conversion of straw using a synthetic microbial community (SMC-8) was functionally investigated to characterise its nitrogen conversion and carbon metabolism. Four species of bacteria were found to utilise >20 % of the inorganic nitrogen within 15 h, and the ratio of the diameter of fungal transparent circles (D) to the diameter of the colony (d) of the four fungal species was >1. Solid-state fermentation of corn straw increased the total amino acid (AA) content by 41.69 %. The absolute digestibility of fermented corn straw dry weight (DW) and true protein was 34.34 % and 45.29 %, respectively. Comprehensive analysis of functional proteins revealed that Aspergillus niger , Trichoderma viride , Cladosporium cladosporioides , Bacillus subtilis and Acinetobacter johnsonii produce a complex enzyme system during corn straw fermentation, which plays a key role in the degradation of lignocellulose. This study provided a new insight in utilizing corn straw.

Abstract:Agricultural straw utilization has become a big concern in many countries with abundance of the production. While different comprehensive utilization methods have been proposed, the environmental aspects of these methods need to be examined to reduce the environmental burdens of agricultural straw disposal. By deploying life cycle assessment, this article evaluates the environmental impact of different wheat straw utilization methods, including soil incorporation, open burning, indoor incineration with energy recovery, combined electricity and energy recovery, conventional straw pulping, and a new type of straw pulping. The results show that the new type of straw pulping has the best environmental performance, while open burning has the worst. The performance of the new type of straw pulping is mainly attributed to its substitution for sulphate pulp and chemical fertilizers. New type of straw pulping has the best environmental performance for human health, ecosystem quality and resource impact categories, with corresponding -2.08E-03 DALY (Disability-Adjusted Life Years), -1.50E+03 PDF.m(2).y (Potentially Disappeared Fraction of species over a certain amount of m(2) during a certain amount of years) and -7.75E+03 MJ (Mega Joules) for these three impact categories. While soil incorporation has the smallest environmental impact in global warming impact category, with 2.33E+02 kg CO2-eq. Sound management of agricultural straw should combine different utilization methods. Policy interventions, such as high-quality straw leaving the field, are needed to deal with the substantial generation of agricultural straw. (C) 2020 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Method for producing biological particle grain-saving straw feed

Abstract:The invention relates to a method for producing a biological particle grain-saving straw feed, effectively solving the problem of grain waste in the production of a biological particle straw feed so as to meet the need of stockbreeding on feeds. The method comprises the following steps of: firstly, mixing the raw materials in percentage by weight: 70-80 percent of straws, 17-27 percent of corn meal, 0.5-1 percent of ammonium bicarbonate, 0.2-0.4 percent of brown sugar, 0.5-1 percent of active biochemical bacterium and 0.4-0.6 percent of common salt; adding 45-55 percent by the raw material weight of water at 24-30 DEG C and uniformly stirring and mixing; and then, putting in a sterile workshop at 40-44 DEG C, carrying out anaerobic fermentation for 6-8 days, extruding to remove 30-40 percent of water content to form a fermented raw material and then granulating and air-drying. The method provided by the invention is simple, rich in raw materials and easy to produce, can fully utilize biological straws and save grains, has good feeding effect and remarkable economic and social benefits and therefore is a great innovation on the biological feed.

Abstract:As a widely produced renewable, low-cost biomass resource, corn straw's physicochemical properties and utilization potential have been extensively studied in order to utilize it with high value and efficiency. However, the impact of the differences in physicochemical properties between different parts of corn straw on its utilization potential has been ignored before. In this study, the composition, chemical properties, and morphology of different parts of corn straw (root, stem, leaf, bract, and corncob) were characterized, and 18 key components were used as evaluation indexes to construct a comprehensive evaluation index system for straw combustion utilization, anaerobic digestion utilization, feed utilization, and fertilizer utilization. Furthermore, the weight of each index was determined using principal component analysis, and the comprehensive evaluation scores of different parts of corn straw were calculated. The results showed that the roots were more suitable for anaerobic digestion and fertilizer utilization, the stems and corncobs were more suitable for combustion utilization, the bracts were more suitable for anaerobic digestion, and the leaves were more suitable for fertilizer utilization and feed utilization. Finally, the feasibility and future development direction of segmented utilization of corn straw were discussed, providing useful information for scientific and efficient utilization of straw resources.

Review on algal control by barley-straw

Abstract:Various studies proved that barley-straw is a promising algal control material. It is successful in reducing algal biomass and optimizing the biology structure in the water. Generally, the presence of the barley-straw in the water can increase the growth of biomass such as invertebrates, and lead to the amelioration of hydro-ecosystem. The mechanism behind the ability of barley-straw to inhibit algal growth is very complex. However, the algal control mechanisms were not implemented via nutrient removal but ap-peared in part physical and biological by encouraging phytoplankton grazing organisms and mainly chemical by releasing relevant levels of known phytotoxic compounds near to the decomposing straw. Active materials such as phenolic compounds, ester com-pounds, and anthraquinones are found to be potentially effective inhibitors, but the exact compounds still needs more research. The use of barley-straw in the small sized water body is especially efficient. In a word, it will be an environmentally benign and cost-effective means to ameliorate the water body.

Abstract:Swine wastewater (SW), characterized by highly complex organic and nutrient substances, poses serious impacts on aquatic environment and public health. Furthermore, SW harbors valuable resources that possess substantial economic potential. As such, SW treatment technologies place increased emphasis on resource recycling, while progressively advancing towards energy saving, sustainability, and circular economy principles. This review comprehensively encapsulates the state-of-the-art knowledge for treating SW, including conventional (i.e., constructed wetlands, air stripping and aerobic system) and resource-utilization-based (i.e., anaerobic digestion, membrane separation, anaerobic ammonium oxidation, microbial fuel cells, and microalgal-based system) technologies. Furthermore, this research also elaborates the key factors influencing the SW treatment performance, such as pH, temperature, dissolved oxygen, hydraulic retention time and organic loading rate. The potentials for reutilizing energy, biomass and digestate produced during the SW treatment processes are also summarized. Moreover, the obstacles associated with full-scale implementation, long-term treatment, energy-efficient design, and nutrient recovery of various resource-utilization-based SW treatment technologies are emphasized. In addition, future research prospective, such as prioritization of process optimization, in-depth exploration of microbial mechanisms, enhancement of energy conversion efficiency, and integration of diverse technologies, are highlighted to expand engineering applications and establish a sustainable SW treatment system.
