Abstract:Dye-sensitized nano-TiO_ 2 solar cells become an active research area in the world. It was reported that the photoelectric conversion efficiency of small size cell is up to 11.18%. But one of the most important problems is the stability of photoelectric conversion efficiency. The different preparation methods of nano-TiO_ 2 and thin-film of opto-electrode and the different thin-film structure have different photoelectric conversion efficiency. Some new developments in the preparation of electrode material and the design of the structure of thin-film in dye-sensitized nano-TiO_ 2 solar cells were reviewed in this paper.

Abstract:The highly-oriented ZnO nano-wire arrays were grown by hydrothermal synthesis on the fluorine-doped tin oxide glass substrates with the ZnO nano-particles pre-coated as seeds.Then,a nano-structured TiO2 layer was coated on each nano-wire of the array in solution of TiCl4 in isopropyl alcohol.The morphologies and microstructures of the ZnO/TiO2 nano-structured composite films were characterized with X-ray diffraction,scanning electron microscopy,energy dispersive spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy.Its possible application in dye-sensitized solar cell was also studied.The results show that when it comes to photo-anode material,the ZnO/TiO2 nano-structured composite film outperforms the pure ZnO layers,with higher open-circuit voltage and fillfactor.
Controllable Fabrication and Characterization of Porous C/TiO2 Nanocomposite Films As Solar Selective Absorber

Abstract:Porous C-TiO2 nanocomposite films prepared by photopolymerization-induced phase-separation method (PIPS) exhibited three dimensional interconnected pores structure. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), atomic force microscope (AFM), thermo-gravimetric and differential thermal analysis (TG-DTA), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), Raman spectroscopy, UV–Vis-NIR spectrophotometer are employed to characterize the structure and optical properties. The results illustrated that the photomonomer pentaerythritol triarylate (PETA) directly affects the relative molecular weight of polymer formed by photopolymerization to regulate the morphology and residual carbon of C-TiO2 nanocomposite films, and ultimately affects the solar selective absorption properties. The single layer of as-prepared porous C-TiO2 nanocomposite films exhibits high solar absorptance (α=0.766–0.863) with low thermal emittance (ε=0.06–0.12), yielding an optimized photothermal conversion efficiency η=α-ε of (0.706–0.762) corresponding to a wide redundancy PETA concentration 0.3–0.9 (molar ratio to Ti precursor). The proportion of residual carbon contributed by PVP, PETA and poly-PETA, and other substances of the sol is 40.2%, 56.2% and 3.6%, respectively, which might be regulated by a suitable annealing process. Based on these results, porous C-TiO2 nanocomposite films are proved to be a novel candidate material for mid-temperature solar selective absorber coatings.
Influence of Nanoporous TiO_2 Films on the Performance of Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells

Abstract:The microstructure of nanoporous TiO2 films has obvious influence on the photovoltaic performance of dye-sensitized solar cells(DSCs).In this work,the effect of different treatment methods such as autoclaving temperature,film thickness,scattering particles,TiCl4 solution treatment and electroposition treatment on DSC photovoltaic performance is introduced,and the optimized results were obtained.Such simple but effective strategies provided a good way to improve the overall energy conversion efficiency of DSC and to future mass production of nanoporous TiO2 films.
Preparation of TiOx-C Nano-Composite Films as Solar Selective Absorbers by Sol-Gel Method

Abstract:TiOx-C nano-composite films were prepared by a sol-gel process, followed by carbonization in vacuum: A soluble organic compound, salicylic acid, coupled with a quasi-crystallized benzene ring structure was served as carbon sources; acetylacetone was used as complexing agent. Using scanning electron microscope, high-resolution transmission electron microscope, four-point probe, spectroscopic ellipsometer and spectrophotometer, the structure, composition and the performance of the films were investigated. The results reveal that the nano-composite film is made up by nano-graphites embedded in amorphous matrix, presenting outstanding optical selectivity (alpha=0.957 and epsilon=0.179). Owing to the excellent chemical and thermal stability of both carbon and TiOx, the composite film also presents prominent durability after subject to a 500 degrees C, 30 h aging test. In terms of these results, the composite film is found to be a potential candidate for selective solar absorbers.
Electron Transportation in the Tio2/Zno Film Electrodes and Application for Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells

Abstract:The TiO2 based dye-sensitized solar cells doped with different sizes of ZnO nanorods were fabricated and studied by photoclectrochemical measurements. The results show that the energy conversion efficiency of the dye-sensitized solar cells after the addition of ZnO nanorods (1%, mass fraction) was increased by 6%-20% in comparison with that without ZnO nanorods. The effect of different sizes of ZnO nanorods on the electronic transportation properties was studied in the composite semiconductor film by means of transient photovoltage technology(TPV). The result indicates that the electron diffusing velocity in N3-sensitized TiO2/ZnO film electrode was about 1-3 order of magnitude faster than that in TiO2 electrode. The experimental results indicate that the TiO2/ZnO electrode can improve the electron transport, decrease the recombination, enhance V-oc I and increase efficiency of energy conversion.

Abstract:TiO2 nanopaticle was synthesised by sol-hydrothermal using titanium isopropoxide as the precursor.The effects of synthesis conditions on grain size,crystallinity and phase transformation between phase-pure rutile and phase-pure anatase,were analyzed by TEM and XRD.It was revealed that crystal-type,crystallinity and crystal-size(from 10-20nm to 120nm) of TiO2 nanoparticles could be controlled by the pre-thermal treatment,hydrothermal temperature and concentration of the precursor.A paste,made from the nanoparticles and water,and by a doctor-blade technology which could control the thickness of the film were utilized to make a Dye-Sensitized Solar Cell(DSSC),which achieved a photoelectric conversion efficiency of 7.33%,as a result of the phase-pure anatase,appropriate grain size and favorable crystallinity of the TiO2 nanoparticles.It exceeded those DSSC's efficiencies made from the commercial paste or P25 paste.

Abstract:Solid state dye-sensitized solar cells(DSSC) have been intensively researched recently. In our group, a series of solid state polymer electrolytes of DSSCs have been designed and synthesized by introducing various functional groups, such as flexible chains, latent chemically cross-linking groups and ionic liquid group. Combining with the structural optimization of TiO2 nanocrystalline thin film electrodes and counter electrodes based on the theoretical simulation of that the efficiency of light absorption can be improved by light scattering and confinement, and the diffusion and penetration of polymer electrolyte can be enhanced by using TiO2 film with larger porosity, solid state DSSCs with high photo-electric energy conversion efficiency have been obtained.
Influence of TiO2 Film/Substrate Contact on Photovoltaic Performance and Improved Efficiency in Dye-Sensitized Solar Cells

Abstract:The influence of the nano-porous TiO2 film/FTO substrate contact on the photovoltaic performance of dye-sensitized solar cells is investigated by controlling film/FTO substrate contact through the use of insulating Al2O3 clusters and TiO2 underlayer at the interface. The electrochemical properties of the DSCs are examined to correlate the photovoltaic performance and the film/FTO substrate contact condition. Results show that the short-circuit current density and thereby the photo-to-electric energy conversion efficiency of the DSCs are significantly decreased by increasing Al2O3 clusters coverage ratio. A modified equivalent circuit model is proposed to understand the relationship between the electric contact resistance and short-circuit current density. Although the increased electric contact resistance itself presents no significant effect on the photovoltaic performance, the decreased performance is mainly attributed to the decreased electron collection in the cell due to the presence of Al2O3 clusters at the film/FTO substrate interface. The result reveals that the film/substrate contact should not be negligible, even though the electric contact resistance of this interface can be neglected. The mechanism by which the film/FTO substrate contact affects cells performance reveals that the porous film cannot be considered as independent column structure but as a network structure being able to transfer electron both perpendicularly and laterally. A spray-deposited TiO2 underlayer was applied to improve the film/FTO substrate interface contact resulting in an increased J(sc) and thereby a higher energy conversion efficiency.

Abstract:As a fundamental part of quantum dot-sensitized solar cells, the composition and configuration of the TiO2 photoanode film plays an important role in photovoltaic performance. In this work, the preparation and optimization of films have been systematically studied, including the TiCl4 treatment technique, transparent layer and light-scattering layer thickness and composition. Experimental results show that the sole TiCl4 treatment on fluorine doped SnO2 (FTO) glass is sufficient for achieving a high efficiency in the resultant cell devices when compared with the simultaneous treatment on both FTO glass and TiO2 mesoporous films. The thickness and porosity of the transparent layer have been optimized by tuning the number of transparent layers and the ethyl cellulose contents in the paste. Moreover, the influence of the light-scattering layer pastes with different contents of the large-sized TiO2 particles on the performance of the cells has also been explored. The CdSe-sensitized solar cells based on the optimized TiO2 film photoanode exhibits a power conversion efficiency of 5.53% under 1 full sun illumination, which is among the best efficiencies for plain CdSe QD-based solar cells.

Abstract:ZnO / TiO 2 composite films composed of a ZnO nanoflowers overlayer and a ZnO / TiO 2 composite particulate underlayer were fabricated by a simple hydrothermal process. The as-prepared films were characterized by scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and diffused reflectance spectroscopy. The performance of dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) was investigated by photocurrent–voltage measurements, incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency (IPCE) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. It was found that the ZnO / TiO 2 composite film prepared with a 60 min growth time exhibited higher reflectivity than that of pure TiO 2 film due to the effective light-scattering of ZnO nanoflowers, resulting in increased J sc . In the meantime, the open-circuit potential of the device were enhanced from 698 to 826 mV due to the formation of an energy barrier by ZnO at TiO 2/electrolyte interface, resulting in a 52% improvement in the power conversion efficiency from 4.64 to 7.06%.

Abstract:In this study, well-crystallized TiO2 nanoparticles with average size of -20 nm were synthesized by hydrolysis of titania salt in aqueous medium. The effect of the optical properties of the obtained titania particles based thin films with different thickness on the photovoltaic performance of dye-sensitized solar cells were investigated. Differential thermal analysis/thermo-gravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction were used to characterize the morphology, structure and crystal formation of the obtained samples. The optical properties such as reflectance and transmittance of the photoanodes with different thickness were systematically investigated. The reflectance property increased with increasing the film thickness, however, the transmittance property showed the opposite way. The improved scattering property with increasing the film thickness facilitated efficient utilization of solar spectrum, which was verified by incident photon-to-current conversion efficiency. The maximum energy conversion efficiency of 5.0% was achieved on photoelectrode film with 17.8 microm.

Abstract:The key technologies in dye-sensitized solar cell, including nanoporous TiO２2 film, dye-sensitizer, electrolyte, platinum catalysis, and TCO glass, have bee n investigated, and we also optimized the different technologies with assemblyin g the small area dye-sensitized solar cells. About 9% photo-electric conversion efficiency has been demostrated in our lab under AM1.5 solar simulator. Our results show that there would be a possibility for commercial production based on our technologies.

Abstract:The superiority and the principle of a novel,low-cost solar cells based on dye-sensitized nano-oxides(DSCs) are repre-sented.Nano-oxides have some special applications in the photoanodes and electrolytes of DSCs.Based on our recent work on DSCs,the developments on nano-oxides for photoanodes and electrolytes are reviewed.The preparation methods of nano-oxides used in photoanodes are introduced,and the performance,such as electron transfer and recombination in photoanodes are discussed.Low-temperature methods and performances of nano-oxides used in flexible solar cells are reviewed in detail.The quasi-solid state solar cells based on nano-oxides are also presented.

Abstract:TiO2-coated SnO2 nanosheet (TiO2–SnO2 NS) films about 300nm in thickness were fabricated on fluorine-doped tin oxide glass by a two-step process with facile solution-grown approach and subsequent hydrolysis of TiCl4 aqueous solution. The as-prepared TiO2–SnO2 NSs were characterized by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The performances of the dye-sensitized solar cells (DSCs) with TiO2–SnO2 NSs were analyzed by current–voltage measurements and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Experimental results show that the introduction of TiO2–SnO2 NSs can provide an efficient electron transition channel along the SnO2 nanosheets, increase the short current density, and finally improve the conversion efficiency for the DSCs from 4.52 to 5.71%.

Abstract:Titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) paste was prepared by sol-gel and hydrothermal method with various precursors. Nanostructured mesoporous TiO 2 thin-film back electrode was fabricated from the nanoparticle colloidal paste, and its performance was compared with that made of commercial P25 TiO 2 . The best performance was demonstrated by the DSSC having a 16 μ m-thick TTIP-TiO 2 back electrode, which gave a solar energy conversion efficiency of 6.03%. The ability of stong adhesion on ITO conducting glass substrate and the high surface area are considered important characteristics of TiO 2 thin film. The results show that a thin film with good adhesion can be made from the prepared colloidal paste as a result of alleviating the possibility of electron transfer loss. One can control the colloidal particle size from sol-gel method. Therefore, by optimizing the preparation conditions, TiO 2 paste with nanoparticle and narrow diameter distribution was obtained.

Abstract:This work is centered on the study of the internal electrochemical variables of a dye sensitized solar cell (DSSC), using characterization techniques such as: electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and numerical modeling of the process, in order to obtain a deeper knowledge of the internal behavior of the solar cell. In this way, it was possible to evaluate loss of recombination, transportation and loss for resistance in series as a function of the intensity of illumination, as well as identifying degradation mechanisms. The experimental development consists in the construction, characterization and modeling of DSSC based on the nanometric titanium dioxide semiconductor. Three different behaviors were studied; (1) Effect of different forms of deposits of titanium oxide nanostructures, (2) evaluation of the influence of solvents (acetonitrile, ionic liquid) and (3) observing the behavior of additives (4-tert-butylpiridine 96%, Lithium), with the intention of determine which of them sensitizes most efficiently the titanium dioxide. The results indicate that the variables studied show a complex system in which optimal interaction between components, semiconductor, dye and electrolyte must be conducted for a good performance and stability.

Abstract:A series of dye-sensitized solar cells based on ZnO-modified TiO2 nano-porous films have been prepared. The current–voltage characteristics of the cells show that the ZnO-modification can improve the open-circuit voltage and the fill factor but can decrease the short-circuit current. Dark current and transient photovoltage measurements are used to study the back reaction. It is indicated that the recombination process is suppressed by blocking the hole transporting from the nano-porous TiO2 since the surface of the semiconductor is almost fully covered with ZnO as a barrier layer.
