Landscape Planning in New Zealand

Abstract:The profession of New Zealand Landscape Architecture was established in the early 1970s. In 1991, the Resource Management Act came into being. Consequently, the landscape profession has truly 'come of age' over the last 21 years, particularly in two key areas: assessment of the landscape and visual effects of new development proposals; and evaluation of the landscape (and related) values of territorial areas. In the area of Territorial Landscape Assessment, the complication, the methods used in different approaches, and the interpretation of landscape values are discussed; with the focus transformed from the countryside and relatively remote environs to these areas of growth and development pressure, landscape architects will have an ever more important role and challenge in addressing such change. In the area of Assessment of Development Effects, the emerging background, the assessment format, process, and methods are discussed, as well as landscape architects' participation in the rapid growing wind farms projects; it is clear that the technical aspects of effects assessment will continue to evolve, to make the profession stronger, which will remain a crucial role for the country.
