Abstract:This paper investigates ways of deploying ecological principles in the planning and design practice of landscape architecture. As a modern profession, one of the central tasks of landscape architecture is of protecting and recovering our environment. The profession is now in the demand in China, because of China’s rapid urban development and the consequent environmental problems. A case study of the planning and design of the Li Lake area provides evidence of how the profession is carrying out such a task. The study also identifies the disconnection between ecological and cultural strategies for recovering a particular landscape.

Abstract:The paper presents the history and natural causes of initiation of Swedish landscape,as while as analyzing the dual influences which are infected by human activities and evolution of geographical environment. That is,on the one hand,the reflecting of agricultural community on landscape and the interpretation of the farming and decision-makers on how to use and management of land resources which have been inherited by thousands of years. On the other hand,there has also been ecological efficiency originated from various factors of the natural. Landscape architecture should respect the nature,and the construction of landscape has to be the form that human activities adapting to the natural rather than transforming it.

Abstract:"From nature to nature" is the major goal of landscape design. The former is the idea of nature, i.e., landscape architects regard nature as the archetype of design; the latter is the experience of nature, i.e., landscape architects hope people can perceive the natural atmosphere through designed landscape. In this sense, the transformation from idea to experience of nature refers to the process of landscape design, which materializes landscape. According to this, this article focuses on the following topics: 1) what role does nature play as the origin of the landscape design theory; 2) how does nature as an idea promote form-giving in landscape design; and 3) what aesthetic experience does designed landscape create. This article draws on two influential landscape architects, Xiaoxiang Sun and Lawrence Halprin, and analyzes their theories and works from the perspective of comparative culture, including the idea of nature and its representation, the inherent mechanism of form-giving in landscape design, and the experience created by designed landscape. It aims to explore the intellectual potentials for contemporary landscape architecture theory through comparing the discrepancies and similarities of the two masters' paths of landscape design.

Abstract:Sunshine, air and water breed life. All natural objects affect human beings in the direct or indirect way. Human beings are always linking with nature and are attached to nature sentimentally. People make progress by learning and understanding the nature, including natural law, natural harmony, natural resources, and the material forms which influence on the development of human ideology deeply. While modern landscape designs consist of many classes and many styles, but the landscape design, the same as the other design, is affected by nature. Landscape designers draw inspiration from the nature and many outstanding landscape works rooted in the form of nature are brimming with vitality. Based on the relationship between the design and the nature, this paper discusses the influence of natural factors on the landscape design and landscape works by means of analysing two cases, in order to describe the relationship between modern landscape design and nature elements.

Abstract:Landscape ecology has achieved great progress since its introduction to China in early 1980s. Based on 619 collections of literatures and 14 collections of books, this paper has all the literatures and books classified, arranged in order and counted on different special subject. According to the results of classified statistics, the authors discuss and analyze how landscape ecology research was going in China during 1990s. Moreover, this paper can also provide scientific basis for those who want to grasp and keep abreast of current focus and trend of landscape ecology in China.

Abstract:Despite little research of them, the landscapes of Slender West Lake underpin a significant and unique typology among the various Chinese traditional urban waterfronts. Although the name ‘Gardens of Yangzhou’ appears in 11th century, these gardens were referred and used as urban public landscape from the 18th century because of Grand Canal. The article explores the organic evolution of Chinese traditional urban waterfronts, through an investigation of historical events occurring along with the landscapes of Slender West Lake. As a Chinese traditional urban waterfront, its organic evolution was often based on the transformation of the experience of landscape. When the trip was more based on the river because of boats, the edge of the garden has become the focus point.

Abstract:Classic Chinese garden used to made splendid achievements,but now,the modern Chinese landscape design should be improved urgently.By contrast,the Japanese landscape that used to be deeply influenced by China has created brand new form of landscape represented by dry advanced level.The minimalist garden rose up around 1960s in American,which also has made worldwide influence.By introducing the histories,internal features and influences to modern landscape design of dry landscape and minimalist garden smiply,the article put forward the the similarities of them in design concept and presentation,and through the way how dry landscape and minimalist garden inherit and carry forward the tradition,we hoped it can bring some inspirations to the development of modern landscape design in China.

Abstract:Scientifically recognizing and wisely intervening the evolution of landscape is an important topic in Landscape Architecture, since evolution (change) is absolute. For human, landscape changes, however, can be measured in a relative sense. Upon such an understanding, the concept “persistent landscape” highlights the landscape’s continuity and stability over time, as well as the stable variety of physical environment. The key to understand this concept lies in landscape architects’ observation of not only the stability of natural ecosystems but also the harmony of cultural-social contexts. However, the rapid urbanization has caused many pressing problems such as the loss of characteristics in urban and rural area, environmental pollution, ecological fragmentation, and cultural fracture, which calls for landscape architects who can re-recognize the man-land relationship and formulate scientific strategies for sustainable development. In this issue, LA Frontiers hopes to offer landscape architects with insights to meet contemporary needs by embracing new landscape forms and implications, so as to create healthier and more poetic-quality living environments with cultural and spatial characteristics.

Abstract:Focusing on the fusion of the form of architecture and landscape,the new strategies emerged in these years are discussed and their backgrounds,developments,characters and examples are analyzed.The landscape field focuses on the deep structure of landscape,in which the form of architecture comes from the superposition of multi-layer control line systems.The operation of the earth’s surface is mainly from the reference to Land Art,and includes the reversing of the term roof/earth surface.The archetype form based on the collective unconscious has abundant symbolizing meanings,expressing the contrast and the tension between the artifact and nature.These new strategies promote the development of the form of contemporary architecture,suggest the trinity of architecture,urban planning and landscape architecture.

Abstract:The great parks and gardens of Europe come alive by the skilful interplay of natural landscape and architectural elements. Throughout the ages, this relationship has been treated in different ways. The gardens of the Italian renaissance in the 15th or 16th century were based on rational plans, whereas the French parks of the Baroque period seem more geometric in design, and the English parklands of the 18th century present a scenic composition. In this publication historical gardens from all over Europe are graphically analysed. By highlighting the design processes, these analyses also function as models for future landscape projects. More than 30 renowned gardens have been documented with a wealth of illustrations. Amongst the parks presented are Palladio's Villa Emo, the perfect order of the Baroque garden Vaux-le-Vicomte near Paris or the pastoral yet mysterious park of Blenheim Palace near Oxford. Clemens Steenbergen and Wouter Reh are landscape architects and Professors at the University of Delft.

Abstract:Landscape design has developed very rapidly in recent years, and has made a lot of achievements in our current practical life and teaching practice, but as a relatively independent discipline, landscape design has gradually revealed a lot of problems that we have not paid attention to in the process of development and creation, and these problems need to be further researched and explored. Abstract:Landscape planning has played a vital role in creating high-standard habitat environment of Germany as a spatial plan instrument coordinating environmental reservation, landscape experience, land use, and etc. This article analyzes the evolution and main contents of landscape planning in Germany and discusses the approach of landscape planning being incorporated into comprehensive planning, using Lower Saxony state and Hanover county as an example, which could enlighten the construction of landscape planning system and multiple plans integration in China.
