Abstract:˖Ultrasonic guided wave technology shows a good prospect in the long distance and large-scale structure of the non-destructive testing and health monitoring, thanks to its advantages such as single-ended excitation, long propagation distance, 100% detection of cross section.Constrained by theory and instrumentation technology, ultrasonic guided wave is basically only used for defect screening, ultrasonic guided wave quantitative detection technology has not been widely studied and applied.Aiming at the quantitative analysis of defect size problem in guided wave inspection, it proposes a method based on matching pursuit for quantifying the severity of pipeline defect along axial direction.By analyzing the characteristics of the echo signal, the optimized dictionary is constructed to efficiently decompose the edge reflection components from defect reflection signal.The axial extent of defect can be then quantitatively evaluated by using obtained information.Algorithm validation experiments of finite element numerical simulation as well as detecting the artificial defects in the aluminum pipe by using MSGW magnetostrictive guided wave detector show that the algorithm of error is less than 5%.

Abstract:In the ultrasonic auto inspection of complex form aircraft forging component,scanning program is hard to automatically recognize defect by the A-wave of each scanning point because of concavo-convex surface and variation thickness of the forging piece.To solve this problem,a thicknessgray ultrasonic imaging method based on thickness variation of workpiece was presented,and template matching method was adopted to improve the defect recognizing ability.Test results demonstrate these methods can improve test efficiency and defect recognizing ability.

Abstract:The existed semi-automatic ultrasound eddy current testing system is difficult to adapt to the situation of seamless steel tube detection requirements at present. This paper puts forward an ultrasonic eddy current synchronous auto-detection system. The principle of ultrasonic eddy current testing tube and the design of the ultrasonic eddy current probe frame are introduced. Software system uses ultrasonic and eddy current imaging at the same time, and ultrasonic testing’s results can be displayed by A+B+C combination imaging. The quasi three-dimensional imaging system can offer more convenient methods to detect personnel. Experimental results verify the feasibility of the system.

Abstract:A recently developed sequential limit analysis method was employed to look into the large displacement penetration behaviour of T-bar penetrometers in soft clay, considering the effects of strain softening and strain rate. Close attention was paid to the effects of interface roughness and the strain rate on the penetration response, before reaching an ideal full-flow state, in order to shed some light on the improved estimate of the in situ strength of surficial soil. The validity of the model was confirmed through a comparison of two small-scale laboratory tests and one centrifuge test, followed by a parametric study in which a T-bar was penetrated from the soil surface to a depth of over five diameters. Analytical equations were derived to assess the effects of interface roughness, viscosity parameter and penetration rate on the T-bar penetration resistance.

Abstract:Accurate and non-destructive technology for detection of subsurface defect has become a key requirement with the emergence of various ultra-precision machining technologies and the application of ultra-precision components. The combination of acoustic technique for sub-surface detection and atomic force microscopy (AFM) for measurement with high resolution is a potential method for studying the subsurface structure of workpiece. For this purpose, contact-resonance AFM (CR-AFM) is a typical technique. In this paper, a CR-AFM system with a different principle from commercially available instruments is set up and used for the detection of sub-surface Si samples with grating structures and covered by different thickness of highly oriented pyrolytic graphite (HOPG). The influence of subsurface burial depth on the detection capability is studied by simulations and experiments. The thickest HOPG film allowing for sub-surface measurement by the proposed method is verified to be about 30 μm, which is much larger than the feature size of the subsurface microstructure. The manuscript introduces the difference between this subsurface topography measurement principle and the commercially available AFM measurement principle, and analyzes its advantages and disadvantages. The experimental results demonstrates that the technique has the capability to reveal sub-surface microstructures with relatively large buried depth and is potential for engineering application in ultra-precision technologies.

Abstract:To solve the problem of pipe thickness on-line nondestructive testing in the explosive surroundings of oil refinery area,a novel EMAT system with maximum lift-off value of 6 mm has been developed in the way of focusing magnetic field and optimizing the testing coil.Experiment results show that the testing accuracy was less than 0.05 mm for standard test block with thickness of 22 mm and the serviced pipeline with thickness of 12.16 mm when the condition of lift-off value was less than 6 mm.The developed EMAT system in this work can satisfy the requirement of pipeline thickness detection in the refining factory,which provides the ability of explosion-proof design and certification for EMAT technology.

Abstract:Spiral scanning mode, where ultrasonic probes relatively rotate forward around a tested bar, is commonly used in an automatic ultrasonic testing system for metal bar quality control. Current non-destructive testing standards for bars with ultrasonic technology specify that whether the bar is rejected or accepted should be made in accordance with the amplitude of the echo from a defect in the bar. The quality information obtained by the abovementioned standard testing procedure is only the echo from the defect, and it is too simple to characterize the defect in detail and accurately. Therefore, inspection using imagery and quantitative nondestructive testing (QNDT) of bar quality is the development trend of bar quality control technology in the future. In achieving QNDT of metal round bars, a synthetic aperture focusing on imaging algorithm in a polar coordinate system (pSAFT) and its surrounding scan-mode time-domain synthetic aperture focusing technology (ST-SAFT) were proposed in accordance with the classical ultrasonic synthetic aperture focusing technology (SAFT) theory on a Cartesian coordinate system. Based on the signal set collected by the spiral scanning automatic detection system, the formula of time-delay superposition imaging expressed by the effective synthetic aperture radian was deduced to image the defects in the bar with a cross-sectional view. By preparing a transverse-hole artificial defect sample for the testing experiment, ultrasonic testing data were processed by ST-SAFT, and then a circular section tomography was imaged. Image edge recognition was used to quantitatively evaluate the sizing ability and positioning resolution of ST-SAFT for defect detection. Experimental results show that the measured value of artificial defects with ST-SAFT is equivalent to the real value; the positioning of the transverse side-drilled hole is accurate, and the imaging resolution is significantly better than that of B-scan. The imaging speed for each circular section can reach the order of milliseconds, which can match the mechanical scanning speed of bar inspection for one circle. Therefore, this technology can be used to improve the technical level of ultrasonic automatic testing equipment for metal round bars and ensure safety of the application of metal round bars.

Abstract:Titanium alloy plate is widely used in automotive, aerospace, medical and other fields. Ultrasonic testing is a highly efficient non-destructive testing method for the inspection of titanium alloy components. However, there are strong distortion and attenuation of sound wave propagation in titanium alloys due to the presence of anisotropy and inhomogeneities, making it difficult to detect tiny defects in such components. In addition, some configuration parameters, such as the water path depth also affect the distribution of the acoustic field in the detected components. It is necessary to predict the acoustic field distribution to achieve a better testing accuracy. An acoustic field simulation method based on a multi-Gaussian beam is proposed, which can model the focused acoustic field in a multilayer anisotropy medium. The relationship between the acoustic focused area and the water path depth was explored and optimised comprehensively. C-scan imaging of specimen with flat bottom holes was performed at different water path depths. The results show that the proposed method can optimise the configuration parameters to improve the accuracy of the flaw sizing. This study provides an effective method for testing titanium alloy plate.

High Precision Ultrasonic Measurement Method for Thin-Walled Parts

Abstract:Thin-walled parts are extensively utilized in the aerospace industry, where over thinning defects in these parts would significantly compromise mechanical safety. Ultrasound measurement methods are commonly employed for thickness non-destructive testing. Manual calibration of reference signals is usually necessary, negatively impacting automation, robustness, and accuracy. This paper proposes a high-precision ultrasound amplitude method for thin-walled component inspection, getting rid of manual calibration. Firstly, the measured signal is preprocessed to extract the spectrum in the effective frequency range. Then, the spectrum is approximated using the asymmetrical Gaussian amplitude model to estimate the spectrum of reference signal and reflection coefficient. Moreover, initial propagation time is estimated from autocorrelation of the signal. Finally, the accurate thickness is obtained from the numerical calculation of reflection coefficient with the initial time. Simulations and experiments demonstrate that the proposed method can accurately measures metal plates as thin as 0.5mm. Compared to the traditional correlation method, it greatly improves measurement accuracy and stability, reducing them to 1/2 and 1/4 of the latter, respectively. Additionally, the proposed method also demonstrates high accuracy for curved thin plates, with an average relative error of only 0.57%. Furthermore, the method exhibits high levels of automation, robustness, and accuracy, and holds significant potential for thickness detection in thin-walled structural components.

Abstract:Ultra-high pressure vessels and pipes are high risk equipment used in petrochemical and crystal fabrication industries.However,it is difficult to detect radial defects in such equipment with traditional shear wave(SW) technique for its ratio of inner radius to outer radius is often less than 0.6.The main reasons for this are analyzed in this article.Furthermore,the authors presented parameters for radial defects detection with circumferential ultrasonic testing(UT) based on theoretical as well as experimental investigations on the structure of sound field,diversity comparisons of radial defects echo,sensitivity of surface radial defects,defect location and sensitivity adjustment of the defects in thick-walled cylinder.Field tests of ultra-high pressure vessels for man-made crystal production and ultra-high pressure pipes for polyethylene show that the presented methods have sufficient sensitivity and reliability for detecting radial defects.

Abstract:When using the ultrasonic test (UT) technique for material evaluation and defect detection, applying a liquid coupling agent between the detection probe and the inspected workpiece surface is expected to ensure detection performance. In this article, we proposed a wheeled dry-coupling ultrasonic detection method that uses room-temperature vulcanized molded silicone rubber (RTV) instead of a liquid coupling agent to fabricate a wheeled dry-coupling ultrasonic probe. We investigated the acoustic propagation characteristics of the dry-coupled ultrasonic contact interface, derived the reflection coefficient, and developed a contact model for the rough interface. The doped filler experiments on dry-coupled materials improved the acoustic impedance of dry-coupled materials, and the reflection coefficient difference between dry-coupled (silicone rubber) and liquid-coupled (oil) was 0.014. For plates to be measured with different roughness, the reflection coefficient was 0.68 when a load of about 40 N was applied, and the dry-coupling effect was good. Finally, we conducted experiments on the thickness measurement of steel plates, and the experimental results showed that the maximum relative error of the wheeled dry-coupled ultrasonic method in detecting the plate thickness was only 2.86%. The study eliminates the step of applying liquid coupling agent on the probe, avoiding the contamination of the equipment surface, satisfying the thickness measurement accuracy and will improve the inspection efficiency, which provides some ideas for the automated wall thickness measurement of large petrochemical equipment.

Evaluating Technology of Spot Weld Quality for Coated High Strength Steel Sheet Based on Ultrasonic Guide Wave

Abstract:Resistance spot welding of the zinc-coated high strength steel sheet is widely used with increasing demands for higher fuel efficiency and the safety requirement in automobiles. However, tiny fluctuation in welding parameters will lead to quality deficient such as stick weld, deficient diameter and spatter due to the poor weldability of the high strength steel and the adverse influences of the coated zinc. Ultrasonic testing (UT) is recognized as a promising technology in estimating the quality of the spot welds. Usually, diameter of the weld spot may be estimated through examining the ultrasonic sequence echo, the diameter of the probe should be the same as that of the regular weld spot and the tester must possess special knowledge on the ultrasonic test. Thus, it is difficult to increase the testing efficiency, decrease testing cost and ensure the testing reliability. In the research, the Lamb wave was adopted to test the spot weld. The wave mode transformation is simplified and the dispersion phenomenon is obviously decreased by using an ultrasonic oblique incidence method. Moreover, the attenuation, sound velocity and the sound components are investigated in theory and experiment. Thereafter, the Lamb wave is adopted in the evaluation on spot weld quality of zinc-coated high strength steel. The interactions between the Lamb wave and nugget characters such as diameter, indentation, columnar crystals are investigated and the relation between the maximum tension load and ultrasonic characteristic amplitude is obtained. The technology proposed in the present work avoids distinguish the complex wave sequence of the spot weld and has higher sensitivity, especially for stick weld compared to the traditional method. Moreover, the testing cost and requirements of the testing system must be decreased by using of the low frequency probe. Meanwhile, the inaccessible area with ultrasonic impulse echo method can be investigated due to the arrangement of the probes. Thus, the method proposed in this research is an effective nondestructive evaluation method for spot welds of coated high strength steel sheet.
A Method Combining the MMF Technique with Ultrasonic to Inspect the Wall Thickness for Water-wall Tube

Abstract:Wall thickness is a key index for water-wall tube inspection in power plant, in order to inspect the tube quickly and evaluate the wall thickness quantitatively, a new method combining the magnetic main flux(MMF) with ultrasonic technique was proposed. The magnetic technique was used to do full inspection and locate the flaws, and the ultrasonic was employed to implement further quantitative inspection accurately. Then, the data measured by ultrasonic transducer was used to calibrate the MMF model parameters firstly, and a function was specified to fit the relations between the wall thickness and the peak value of MMF signal, thus the wall thickness can be evaluated quickly. The experimental results demonstrate that the model used in this system has better accuracy than the statistics relation model obviously, and it is suitable for defect evaluation in real-time.

Abstract:The thickness measurement of large thin-walled part has become increasingly important to inspect the machining quality and compensate the machining errors. So far, commercial hand-held ultrasonic thickness gauges have been widely used in the wall thickness inspection of large thin-walled parts. However, the manual operation has some disadvantages such as insufficient measurement efficiency, intensive labor, and limited accuracy. To tackle these problems, an automatic thickness measuring method is supposed to be an effective approach. In this article, an ultrasonic on-machine scanning technique for thickness measurement of large thin-walled parts is proposed. First, a multi-function integrated ultrasonic thickness on-machine measuring device is innovatively designed, which enables the posture of an ultrasonic sensor to adapt to the measured surface orientation automatically. Second, the on-machine measurement model of the thickness distribution is established, which includes a measuring point coordinate extraction model and a precise thickness assessing model. Then, a scanning motion control strategy for contact ultrasonic measurement is proposed to maintain a constant pressure between the ultrasonic transducer and the workpiece during the scanning process. Finally, taking the arched part, inclined plate, and S-shaped thin-walled part as typical objects, the experimental study has been conducted using the proposed method. The experimental results show that the ultrasonic thickness on-machine measurement accuracy can be controlled within 0.04 mm, which validates the feasibility of the ultrasonic thickness on-machine scanning technique on thickness measurement of complex surface thin-walled parts.

Abstract:Nylon is a common engineering plastic that is easy to machine and can serve as a mechanical end-part. Ultrasonic testing is a highly efficient nondestructive testing method for the inspection of nylon materials. However, the curvature of the surface causes scattering or focusing of the ultrasonic beam bring difficulties to detect the inner defects. In addition, some configuration parameters, such as the water path depth, also affect the acoustic field distribution. It is necessary to predict the acoustic field distribution to achieve a better testing accuracy. An acoustic field simulation model based on a multi-Gaussian beam is established to predict the focused acoustic field in a multilayer medium under a curved interface. The relationship between the acoustic focusing area and the water path depth was explored, and the water path depth is selected by simulating the effective detection region. C-scan imaging of specimens with artificial flat-bottom holes are performed at different water path depths. By comparing the quantitative analysis results of different water path depths, the error of the FBH size obtained by selecting a water path depth is significantly less than others. The ultrasonic C-scan images of nylon bar with natural flaws are compared with the microscopic CT tomography reconstruction images, and the comparison shows that the defects can be detected in the C-scan images. The results show that the proposed method can optimize the configuration parameters to improve the accuracy of the flaw sizing. This study provides an efficient technique for the detection of nylon bars.

Abstract:In order to analyze the validity of testing results for CCCD-SHPB dynamic fracture test system,3-D dynamic finite element method was employed to investigate the effects of specimen's geometric size and incident/transmitted bar's material on the testing results.The analysis confirms that the specimen diameter has a significant effect on the testing result of CCCD-SHPB(central cracked circular disk-split Hopkinson pressure bar)dynamic fracture test system,and whether or not matching of the incident/transmitted bar's impedence with the specimen's impedence has an effect on the precision of the testing result,but the specimen thickness,to some extent,has less effect on the testing result.Due to the unbalance of loads on two sides of specimen at the early stages of dynamic loading,a characteristic time ΔT,which is dependent on specimen size,is introduced in the present paper.Its value is approximately equal to the time of which stress wave travels back and forth in the specimen for two times.It is necessary that the time of which specimen is loaded till fracture must be greater than ΔT when the dynamic fracture test is conducted.
