Abstract:Sensing and measurement of internal strains in concrete structures is an interesting area where fiber optic sensors provide superior measurement capabilities. The crack tip opening displacement (CTOD) for semi-elliptical surface crack in cementitious material has been the object of many research efforts, publications, and speculations. Yet none of the experimental techniques appear to have measured the CTOD of concrete with a semi-elliptical surface crack through deformation measurement. The study reported here measures the stress–CTOD curves for concrete with a semi-elliptical surface crack by fiber optic sensing system. The elasto-plastic model accounting for the lag strain in the protective coating of optical fiber and the strain localization of concrete near the final crack was employed for the fiber optic sensing system. Calibration tests on 100mm×100mm×300mm prisms were made to determine the parameters for the theoretical model. Also two tests on 450mm×450mm×900mm prisms were made to measure the stress–CTOD curves for concrete with semi-elliptical surface crack.
