Abstract:Abstract The ability to measure strains quasi‐continuously with high spatial resolution makes distributed fiber optic sensing a promising technology for structural health monitoring as it allows to locate and measure damages in concrete structures, such as cracks. Depending on whether the distributed fiber optic sensor (DFOS) is embedded into the concrete matrix or bonded to the reinforcement, different approaches for crack width calculation exist. The high spatial resolution of DFOS quickly leads to a large amount of data, especially with time continuous monitoring. Scalable, automated analysis approaches are required to handle such big data and to derive a gain in knowledge from the measurements. Thus, in a first step, the Python framework fosanalysis is presented and made available to other researchers or monitoring specialists as free software. The most important input parameters for crack width calculation are discussed for concrete strain and steel strain DFOS. Accurate crack monitoring for a 4 m long reinforced concrete beam is demonstrated by using fosanalysis . The calculated crack widths are in good agreement with digital image correlation measurements.

Abstract:Abstract The high spatial resolution of distributed fiber optic sensors enables quasi‐continuous strain measurements, which makes it a promising technology for structural health monitoring. From this quasi‐continuous strain data, location and width of cracks can be estimated. For major benefit to infrastructure maintenance, this crack width calculation is need to be automated. A framework for crack width estimation is presented, streamlining the different approaches for concrete and steel sensors, mainly differing in the compensation of tension stiffening. Relevant parameters for the analysis are identified and their influence is studied. Two sensors – a concrete embedded one and a reinforcement attached one – are used to estimate crack width using the presented framework. The results are compared to digital image correlation. Accurate estimates are achieved. Tension stiffening showed to have a negligible small influence on the estimated crack widths. The concrete embedded sensors have a higher sensitivity and are recommended for crack width monitoring.

Abstract:Abstract Deformation monitoring and structural reliability assessment are key components in modern conventional tunneling. The state-of-the-art monitoring design is usually based on displacement measurements of geodetic targets using total stations paired with pointwise geotechnical sensors inside the tunnel lining. In recent years, distributed fiber optic sensing (DFOS) has become more popular in tunneling applications. DFOS measurements basically deliver internal strain and temperature distributions, but no direct relation to the tunnel shape’s behavior. This paper introduces a novel sensing and evaluation concept, which combines DFOS strain measurements and geodetic displacement readings for distributed shape assessment along curved structures, such as tunnel cross-sections. The designed system was implemented into shotcrete tunnel cross-sections as well as shaft linings and enables the determination of displacement profiles with high spatial resolution in the range of centimeters. Evaluations of continuous monitoring campaigns over several weeks as well as epoch-wise measurements performed by different DFOS sensing units in combination with stochastic analysis demonstrate the high potential of the developed approach and its capability to extend traditional monitoring methods in tunneling.

Abstract:A distributed optical fiber sensor based on Brillouin scattering (BOTDR or BOTDA) can measure and monitor strain and temperature generated along optical fiber. Because it can measure in real-time with high precision and stability, it is quite suitable for health monitoring of large-scale civil infrastructures. However, the main challenge of applying it to structural health monitoring is to ensure it is robust and can be repaired by adopting a suitable embedding method. In this paper, a novel method based on air-blowing and vacuum grouting techniques for embedding long-distance optical fiber sensors was developed. This method had no interference with normal concrete construction during its installation, and it could easily replace the long-distance embedded optical fiber sensor (LEOFS). Two stages of static loading tests were applied to investigate the performance of the LEOFS. The precision and the repeatability of the LEOFS were studied through an overloading test. The durability and the stability of the LEOFS were confirmed by a corrosion test. The strains of the LEOFS were used to evaluate the reinforcing effect of carbon fiber reinforced polymer and thereby the health state of the beams.

Abstract:Transportation Research Record, Ahead of Print. The need to develop more efficient pavement management systems has driven continuous improvement in structural health monitoring (SHM) systems for road infrastructures. Factors such as low energy consumption, minimal disruption (small-sized and lightweight devices), resistance to environmental conditions, high durability, and sensitivity are some of the possible improvements worthy of exploration. Fiber optics appear to have several of these desired characteristics. In this context, this article presents strain measurements performed using fiber optic cables installed at various levels in pavement structures tested on the accelerated pavement testing facility at the Université Gustave Eiffel (or fatigue carousel). The results reveal that strains measured with this technology closely align with those obtained using traditional strain gauges. However, an advantage of fiber optics is that they enable distributed measurements over long distances with high precision (10 m with a measurement interval of 2.6 mm in this study). These measurements highlight a significant variability in pavement strains, seemingly attributable to the heterogeneity of pavement materials and variations in layer thicknesses. As a result of these findings, laboratory-scale investigations have been initiated to gain a better understanding of these sources of variability.

Abstract:Abstract The application of distributed fiber optic sensing (DFOS) technologies to the monitoring of civil engineering structures has been widely developed in recent years. In particular, fiber optic sensing (FOS) using the Rayleigh backscattering phenomenon of the laser frequency spectrum has been used to continuously measure strain along the fiber optic sensor with high spatial resolution. However, the practical implementation of fiber optic sensorsin the field is still a challenge. These include, but are not limited to, the bonding between fiber sensor cables and the surrounding medium, the practical way in which fiber optic sensors can be installed in concrete structures, and the analysis of crack width using the strain distribution along the fiber. Compared to classical discrete sensors, the DFOS has a great potential to detect, localize and quantify crack formation even in the early stages of microcracking. This paper discusses the potential and challenges of using distributed fiber optic sensors for crack detection in concrete structures. In this sense, different types of mechanical tests on concrete structures using different fiber optic sensors, and different bonding techniques are presented to explore the possibilities of crack detection in concrete structures and its potential for practical structural health monitoring (SHM) systems of civil structures.

Abstract:Distributed fibre optical sensing (DFOS) is increasingly used in civil engineering research. For reinforced concrete structures, almost continuous information concerning the deformations of embedded reinforcing bars can be obtained. This information enables the validation of basic and conventional assumptions in the design and modelling of reinforced concrete, particularly regarding the interaction of concrete and reinforcing bars. However, this relatively new technology conceals some difficulties, which may lead to erroneous interpretations. This paper (i) discusses the selection of sensing fibres for reinforced concrete instrumentation, accounting for strain gradients and local anomalies caused by stress concentrations due to the reinforcing bar ribs; (ii) describes suitable methods for sensor installation, strain acquisition and post-processing of the data, as well as determining and validating structurally relevant entities; and (iii) presents the results obtained by applying DFOS with these methods in a variety of experiments. The analysed experiments comprise a reinforced concrete tie, a pull-out test under cyclic load, and a flexural member in which the following mechanical relevant quantities are assessed: the initial strain state in reinforcing bars, normal and bond shear stresses, deflections as well as forces. These applications confirm the benefit of DFOS to better understand the bond behaviour, but also demonstrate that its application is intricate and the results may lead to erroneous conclusions unless evaluated meticulously.

Abstract:Effective health monitoring of concrete structures is vital in structural and geotechnical engineering, especially for internal monitoring in harsh environments. This article presents and validates a solution for distributed fiber optic sensing (DFOS) using Brillouin optical frequency-domain analysis (BOFDA) technology for monitoring the internal strain throughout the life cycle of common concrete slabs. The principle and sensing mechanism of BOFDA are briefly introduced and analyzed. A well-designed and deployed fiber under test (FUT) layout is utilized to accurately capture the internal strain distribution of a concrete slab. Besides, fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensors and a thermocouple probe are incorporated for point strain reference and global temperature compensation. This paper presents a comprehensive monitoring method of concrete slabs throughout their entire life cycle. The monitoring process covers the preparation, pouring, curing, corrosion, and loading stages. Our experimental results demonstrate the feasibility of holistically monitoring strain distribution in concrete slabs over their lifetime. Additionally, post-processing of the data enables tracking of strain evolution at specific sensor nodes of interest. Furthermore, our study includes an extreme loading scenario, allowing examination of the strain variation process at rebars and key nodes. The strain distribution patterns observed in the experiment align with the finite element simulation results. These findings provide valuable guidance for crack prediction and structural health monitoring (SHM) of concrete slabs. The proposed scheme offers a unique and highly precise solution for full life-cycle SHM capable of functioning effectively in harsh environments such as energization and saltwater corrosion, thereby expanding its potential applications.

Abstract:Structural health monitoring is essential for the lifecycle maintenance of tunnel infrastructure. Distributed fiber‐optic sensor (DFOS) technology, which is capable of distributed strain measurement and long‐range sensing, is an ideal nondestructive testing (NDT) approach for monitoring linear infrastructures. This research aims to develop a distributed sensing network utilizing DFOS for structural integrity assessment of concrete immersed tunnels. The primary innovations of this study lie in the development of a general flowchart for establishing a sensing network and obtaining reliable field data, as well as its subsequent validation through a detailed case study. Concentrated joint deformations in typical immersed tunnels, detectable by the DFOS, are key indicators of structural integrity. This study addresses crucial elements of field monitoring system design, including the selection of appropriate optical fibers or cables and the determination of vital interrogator system parameters. It also covers sensor parameter determination, installation techniques, field data collection, and postanalysis. Furthermore, this research is exemplified by a case study that illustrates the successful implementation of a distributed sensing network in an operational immersed tunnel, and monitoring data reveals cyclic structural deformations under impacts of daily tide and seasonal temperature variations. The data obtained from this network play a significant role in subsequent condition assessments of tunnel structures. The research findings contribute to the assessment of large‐scale infrastructure health conditions through the application of DFOS monitoring.

Abstract:Distributed Fiber Optics Sensing (DFOS) is a mature technology, with known, tested, verified, and even certified performance of various interrogators and measurement methods, which include Distributed Temperature Sensing (DTS), Distributed Temperature-Strain Sensing (DTSS), and Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS). This paper reviews recent progress in two critical areas of DFOS implementation in large scale civil engineering structures. First is the substantial improvement in sensing accuracy achieved by replacing Brillouin scattering-based measurements with its Rayleigh counterpart. The second is progress in acquisition speed and robustness, as now engineers can observe parameters of interest in real-time, and make informed, operational decisions regarding quality and safety. This received a high valuation from field engineers when used during the construction stage of the project. Furthermore, this change in the use of DFOS in civil engineering greatly increases the practical possibility of installing FO cables permanently. The same FO cables can be later used for long-term monitoring, during maintenance periods throughout the structure's lifetime. To illustrate these two advances, we present a comparison between Brillouin and Rayleigh scattering measurements, and their accuracy, and highlight the importance of temperature and strain separation. We also present several important applications in large scale civil engineering infrastructure projects.

Abstract:An increasing number of tunnel diseases have been appearing due to operating age, geologic changes, material degradation, etc. The deterioration of secondary lining such as concrete cracking and leaking are the most important diseases. At present, the detection of diseases mainly depends on ground penetrating radar, seismic wave method, CT and other techniques which are difficult to monitor the process of degradation and to predict diseases. The Brilliouin optical time domain analysis (BOTDA) is a new technique used to measure and monitor the strain and the temperature along the long-distance optical fiber. As the characteristics of distributed measurement, long distance, high precision and durability, BOTDA is particularly interesting for the life-cycle health monitoring of tunnel. In this paper, 2.5km distributed optical fiber are embedded into concrete of secondary lining by air-blowing and vacuum grouting technique. The experiments are carried out to calibrate the strain measuring accuracy of the embedded optical fiber sensor. The health state of tunnel during construction is established by the data of traditional sensor, and the long-term health monitoring is carried out by strain measured by distributed optical fiber. At last, the health monitoring software owns the function of diseases visual query and real-time data analysis has been introduced.

Abstract:The essence of structural health monitoring (SHM) requires an innovative sensing system similar to a human nervous system throughout the whole body to catch comprehensive information without losing structural integrity. In a recent research by the authors, an integrated structural assessment strategy based on distributed strain sensing technologies is proposed [1], which has been dedicated to utilize the strain distribution throughout the full or some partial areas of structures to detect the arbitrary and unforeseen damage. To implement such strategy, a typical distributed fiber optic sensing system is developed by extending the gage length of fiber Bragg grating (FBG) and then arranging the long-gage FBG sensors in series. This article summarizes the packaging design and manufacture method of such long-gage FBG sensors and verifies the performance of the developed sensors and the distributed sensing system by using a series connection of long-gage FBG sensors. Combined with the practical application in steel and reinforced concrete (RC) structures, the efficiency and ascendancy of the proposed distributed fiber optic sensing system in SHM are elaborated.

Abstract:Monitoring the entire process of concrete corrosion is critical for assessing the remaining life of the structure and determining if maintenance is needed. In this study, the long-distance embedded optical fiber sensor (LEOFS) and the embedded corrosion optical fiber sensor (ECOFS) were both embedded to form a smart reinforced concrete beam that could simultaneously sense loading and corrosion. The structural strain induced by loading was recorded by the LEOFS; meanwhile, the structural strain induced by corrosion was monitored by the ECOFS. The experimental result shows that the aluminum-plastic tube makes the LEOFS effective for long-term monitoring in the corrosive environment. The result also indicates that selecting an appropriate location for the ECOFS leads to high accuracy measurement of strain induced by corrosion. The data of the ECOFS are meaningful for judging the corrosion cracking moment and for estimating the corrosion crack width for the entire corrosion process.

Abstract:Abstract Optical-fiber sensing technologies are being theoretically and practically researched. These technologies, possessing linear and real-time properties, realize the sectional analysis of strain and temperature and improve point monitoring methods in deep foundation pit supporting systems. In this paper, a field experimental model of the deep foundation pit supporting system was designed in the subway station in Suzhou, China, which utilizes optical-fiber sensing technology. In this field experiment, conventional monitoring methods, namely steel-bar meters, inclinometer, and water-level observation hole were firstly employed for comparative study. Distributed optical-fiber sensors (DOFS) were employed at the same time based on Brillouin optical time-domain analysis (BOTDA). The experimental results show that the DOFS can more comprehensively monitor the pit support system than the conventional methods. The fiber sensors data reflect the positive and negative strain distribution of the walls in a linear section and detect a leakage by analyzing abnormal data. The fiber sensors data response a linear increase of the axial strain with excavation depth, and a bending phenomenon is discovered by the data curves because of the excavation depth difference of the testing support. With temperature compensation, the fiber monitoring data are more accurate to the excavation result than the steel-bar does. Thus, the sensors can get a combined action function of steel-bar which used for testing axial force and temperature, inclinometer which used for testing wall horizontal displacement, and water-level observation holes with accurately monitoring data.

Abstract:Brillouin scattering-based distributed optical fiber (OF) sensing technique presents advantages for concrete structure monitoring. However, the existence of spatial resolution greatly decreases strain measurement accuracy especially around cracks. Meanwhile, the brittle feature of OF also hinders its further application. In this paper, the distributed OF sensor was firstly proposed as long-gauge sensor to improve strain measurement accuracy. Then, a new type of self-sensing fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) bar was developed by embedding the packaged long-gauge OF sensors into FRP bar, followed by experimental studies on strain sensing, temperature sensing and basic mechanical properties. The results confirmed the superior strain sensing properties, namely satisfied accuracy, repeatability and linearity, as well as excellent mechanical performance. At the same time, the temperature sensing property was not influenced by the long-gauge package, making temperature compensation easy. Furthermore, the bonding performance between self-sensing FRP bar and concrete was investigated to study its influence on the sensing. Lastly, the sensing performance was further verified with static experiments of concrete beam reinforced with the proposed self-sensing FRP bar. Therefore, the self-sensing FRP bar has potential applications for long-term structural health monitoring (SHM) as embedded sensors as well as reinforcing materials for concrete structures.

Abstract:Optical fiber-based sensors "embedded" in functionalized carbon structures (FCSs) and textile net structures (TNSs) based on alkaline-resistant glass are introduced for the purpose of structural health monitoring (SHM) of concrete-based structures. The design aims to monitor common SHM parameters such as strain and cracks while at the same time acting as a structural strengthening mechanism. The sensor performances of the two systems are characterized in situ using Mach-Zehnder interferometric (MZI) and optical attenuation measurement techniques, respectively. For this purpose, different FCS samples were subjected to varying elongation using a tensile testing machine by carefully incrementing the applied force, and good correlation between the applied force and measured length change was observed. For crack detection, the functionalized TNSs were embedded into a concrete block which was then exposed to varying load using the three-point flexural test until destruction. Promising results were observed, identifying that the location of the crack can be determined using the conventional optical time domain reflectometry (OTDR) technique. The embedded sensors thus evaluated show the value of the dual achievement of the schemes proposed in obtaining strain/crack measurement while being utilized as strengthening agents as well.

Abstract:Modem technologies are increasingly facilitating real-time monitoring of urban bridges and transportation networks. The advances in multi-channel fiber optical sensing system for instance, enable practical deployments for large extended bridge structural systems. Sensor data, can be used for long-term condition assessment, traffic-load regulation, emergency response, and seismic safety applications. In this paper, A flexible and scalable urban bridge Cluster Health Monitoring system is being developed and implemented. A typical concrete tied arch bridge was selected to introduce the computer-based automated signal analysis algorithms to process the monitoring data and one-year measurement data obtained from the fiber optical strain and temperature sensors are used for this study. The correlation analysis technique is applied to quantify the effect of temperature on the strain responses. The results show that the linear regression model exhibits good capabilities for mapping the strain responses with temperature.

Abstract:<p>Distributed fiber optic sensing (DFOS) is increasingly being applied in civil engineering. One recently emerging type of DFOS, Optical Frequency Domain Reflectometry (OFDR), offers improved accuracy and resolution. This paper presents an experimental study that investigates the ability of OFDR, implemented using several types of fiber optic cable, to detect concrete cracking and large strain steel deformation. More specifically, the experimental investigation involved six reinforced concrete specimens with different types of optical fiber embedded in both the concrete and rebar. OFDR successfully detected continuous rebar deformation and bond stress through the post yielding range, as well as strain localization indicative of concrete cracking. The type of optical fiber is shown to have a substantial influence on the measured strain response after the onset of nonlinear behavior (i.e., cracking and yielding) and into the large deformation regime where measurement survivability becomes an issue. The higher performing fibers reveal unprecedented detail regarding the interaction between concrete and rebar and demonstrate potential for application in RC structures. Based on these findings, the paper gives practical recommendations for cables with different size and structure.</p>

Investigation of the Robust Integration of Distributed Fibre Optic Sensors in Structural Concrete Components

Abstract:In recent times, the value of data has grown. This tendency is also observeable in the construction industry, where research and digitalisation are increasingly oriented towards the collection, processing and analysis of different types of data. In addition to planning data, measurement data is a main focus. fibre optic measurements offer a highly precise and comprehensive approach to data collection. It is, however, important to note that this technology is still in research regarding concrete structures. This paper presents two methods of integrating filigree sensors into concrete structures. The first approach entails wrapping a fibre around a tendon duct and analysing the installation and associated measurements. The second method involves bonding polyimide and acrylate-coated fibres with 2K epoxy and cyanoacrylate in the grooves of rebars, exposing them to chemical environments. The resulting measurement data is evaluated qualitatively and quantitatively to ascertain its resilience to environmental factors. These developed criteria are consolidated in a decision matrix. Fibre-adhesive combinations necessitate protection from chemical and mechanical influences. The limitations of the solutions are pointed out, and alternative options are proposed.
