A Comparative Study on Partial Discharge Characteristics for XLPE Cable.

Abstract:The stable operation of cross-linked polyethylene (XLPE) cable is essential to the safety of the power system. At present, the ultra-low frequency test method can effectively detect insulation fault of XLPE cable with the advantage of lightweight. In this paper, four kinds of defect models, including uneven fracture, insulation scratch, interlayer pollution and semi-conductive layer residue, were manually made. Then their partial discharge (PD) characteristics, such as phase resolved partial discharge (PRPD) pattern, PD pulse waveform and pulse-time statistical pattern, were tested under ultra-low frequency voltage and power frequency voltage. Results show that PD characteristics demonstrate distinct differences for each defect, and features extracted from the statistical pattern are able to characterize these differences, which expands the evaluation method of insulation fault of XLPE cable.
