Abstract:Durability analysis of sea dam foundation is an important problem which distressed people all the time, especially in eastern Linhai area, where with continuous alternation of salty and fresh water, high humidity, long time of high temperature, and adverse circumstances. In present paper Linhai sea dam foundation is studied from three sides as a typical case, which is the designed water-cement ratio, carbonation depth of concrete, thickness of protective course for concrete. The anti-corrosion measures and some suggestion are set forth. In addition the effect of inundation on the stability of sea dam is studied. Abstract:The causes of the mechanical seal leak between axis and nacelle in marine current turbine prototype were presented.The contact method of finite element analysis in ANSYS was introduced to calculate the seal distortion which is caused by the axial forces and radial forces.The simulation result was compared with the theoretical result.The results show that the leak caused by the distortion relates to the circumference pressure.The improved seal structure and floating seals were given for underwater turbines.

Abstract:Fatigue life is an important factor to be considered in foundation design of offshore wind turbines (OWTs), and accurate prediction of fatigue damage is dependent on an appropriate foundation model. Currently, the rigid foundation is widely used to model the monopile foundation in most aero-hydro-servo-elastic simulation tools, and soil stiffness and damping are not considered. This will lead to an inaccurate estimation of fatigue damage of monopile-supported OWTs. Given this limitation, hyperplastic ratcheting model is incorporated into FAST v7, the variations of stiffness, damping and accumulated displacement for monopile-supported OWTs subjected to cyclic loadings are well considered. The validity of the implementation is demonstrated by presentation of non-linear soil resistance-displacement curves, and a series of hysteresis loops can be observed. Based on this inte-grated tool, extensive simulations and analyses for monopile-supported OWTs under different environmental states are performed. Furthermore, the effect of pile-soil interaction on fatigue life of monopile is quantified. The aim of this paper is to provide an accurate model to estimate fatigue life of monopile-supported OWTs.

Abstract:Multi-beam box girder bridges have been applied widely throughout the world for many years. However, the cracking of longitudinal joints between the box girders always leads to reflective cracking of the bridge decks during the service period and thus finally affects the safety and durability of the actual bridges. An embedded steel plate (ESP) strengthening method was presented by introducing carbon-A/-B glue to reinforce the longitudinal joints of old multi-beam box girder bridges for this problem. In order to evaluate the feasibility of the proposed method for actual bridges, an old multi-beam box girder bridge was reinforced, and structural parameters including strain, frequency, and deflection were obtained by adopting field tests before and after strengthening. In addition, the corresponding finite element (FE) model of the background bridge was also set up using ANASYS 18.0 to analyze the strengthening process. Analysis results of the actual bridge and FE model indicate that structural stiffness and load lateral transferring performance between the box girders were enhanced after ESP strengthening. Therefore, this proposed strengthening method can be used to improve the mechanical performance of multi-beam box girder bridges and provide reference for such bridge reinforcement.

Abstract:The iron roughneck is an automated piece of equipment utilized for the connection and removal of drilling tools. This paper presents the design of an integrated iron roughneck, providing a detailed introduction to its clamp body structure, along with an analysis of its structural characteristics and performance requirements. The study delves into the integration mode and working characteristics of the clamping mechanism and spin buckle mechanism for the integrated upper clamp body structure of the iron roughneck. Additionally, this paper conducts an in-depth theoretical study on the spin buckle mechanism. Firstly, it analyzes the actual working condition of the spin buckle roller from two perspectives, namely contact theory and rolling friction theory, determining the structural form of the spin buckle roller. Secondly, it investigates the relative displacement between the spin buckle mechanism and the drilling tool, proposing a design method for the floating device mounted on the spin buckle roller and establishing the kinematic equation of the spin buckle roller under the influence of the floating device. Furthermore, the kinematic equations of the spin buckle roller under the influence of the floating device are established. Finally, a dynamics simulation experiment is performed to simulate the working process of the spin buckle mechanism under actual working conditions, analyzing the dynamics and kinematics of the spin buckle mechanism and obtaining the relevant parameter curves of the spin buckle mechanism and drilling tools. Through data comparison and analysis, the correctness of the theoretical analysis results and the rationality of the performance and structure of the spin buckle mechanism are verified.

Experimental study on the fatigue failure mechanism of key joints in deepwater semi-submersible platform structures

Abstract:Deepwater semi-submersible platform structures under the loads of deep-sea environment and operation will generate fatigue damage accumulation, which accelerates the expansion of fatigue crack and causes the fatigue failure of the platform structures. The fatigue tests of two-type key joints in the brace of platform were investigated, and the analyses of fatigue failure phenomenon, fatigue failure procedures and fatigue crack growth law were carried out. The test results show that fatigue lives estimated by using the crack propagation model and parameters given in the specification are lower than the fatigue lives obtained in the test, which illustrates that it is safe to estimate the fatigue lives of key joints by using the crack propagation model and parameters given in the specification; the parameters of S-N curves of key joints established by the test results agree well with the parameters of S-N curves given in the DNV specification;the ε-N relation curves of weld toe can reflect the three-stage fatigue damage rule of the key joints. It will provide a reference for the effective prediction of fatigue damage degree, maintenance and reinforcement of the structures in time, the service life extension of the platform’ s crucial structures.

Abstract:With the rapid development in the manufacturing sector, lightweight manufacturing has become an inevitable trend. However, achieving lightweight engineering machinery requires the structural redesign of most internal components, including the hydraulic cylinders in hydraulic systems. When evaluating the lifespan of redesigned loader hydraulic cylinders using simulated pulse experiments, it was evident that the fillet weld between the connecting end cap and cylinder barrel failed and fractured before reaching its full lifespan. Consequently, in order to assess the failure conditions of the loader hydraulic cylinder, the generation and extension of the failure cracks were explored using methods such as macroscopic fracturing, hardness testing, metallographic analysis, inclusion component analysis, and finite element analysis. During this process, the end cap structure of hydraulic cylinder was improved using finite element analysis. The results showed that the presence of numerous coarse spherical carbides at the tip of the weld cracks and the formation of dislocation tangles around the carbides, resulting in high stress concentrations and accelerated fatigue crack propagation. Additionally, the specific welding-joint structure of the hydraulic cylinder, resulting in high stress concentrations and accelerated fatigue crack initiation at the weld. After improving the hydraulic-cylinder end cap structure using finite element analysis, the fatigue life of the hydraulic cylinder was improved. This work provides a theoretical basis for the design and manufacture of lightweight and high-life hydraulic cylinders.

Abstract:Abstract The design of obround components has been difficult and complex due to the absence of a suitable theoretical solution. Current design codes use empirical formulas based on assumptions to determine the minimum required thickness for obround components. The design process involves iteration. The results obtained are far from accurate. In the paper, a new design method for obround components is proposed based on the recently proposed closed-form solution. In the new method, an obround shell is imagined as being stretched laterally from a cylindrical shell or parent cylinder. With the flattened shell increases, the thickness of the obround shell should increase accordingly, to keep the maximum hoop stress of obround shell consistent with the maximum hoop stress of the parent cylinder. The minimum requested thickness, MRT, of the obround shell are related to the MRT of the parent cylinder and the flattened shell length of the obround shell. Through parameter studies, those relationships are investigated. Empirical expressions are used to describe those relationships. Using the proposed design method, the determination of the MRT of obround members becomes the determination of the MRT of the parent cylinders and additional parameters. The MRT of obround members is determined directly. The case study demonstrates that the proposed method is an efficient and accurate design process for obround members. The use of new method for Fitness-for-service is explored. The new method can be used to reassess operational safety in the event of vessel materials deterioration.

Abstract:The design and load-bearing characteristics of connection joints are the main factors restricting the load-bearing capacity of composite hull structures. In the present paper, the transition joint between the deck and the broadside of the main hull is designed and manufactured by combining bolt connection and cementing, which provides a reference for the design of large-scale composite hull structure. Based on Shokrieh-Hashin criterion and coherent zone modeling method, the simulation method of progressive failure of complex composite structures is improved and renewed. The test results show that the failure mode and ultimate load predicted by numerical method are in good agreement with the test results. Based on the numerical calculation method, the influences of the overlap width d of the hat profile and the overlap width s of the hand-pasted reinforced area on the strain, displacement and ultimate bearing capacity of the joint are quantitatively analyzed, and the optimal scheme of the full-scale deck-side joint is formed, which provides support for the design of large-scale marine composite joint.

Abstract:Double-sided weld is an effective way to improve the fatigue performance of orthotropic steel bridge decks (OSBD). However, the fatigue performance and optimization design methods of double-sided welds connecting the U-rib and the deck in OSBD require further study. In this paper, the finite element modeling method suitable for the notch stress approach in double-sided welds is discussed, and its variance from that of the single-sided weld is revealed. All possible fatigue failure modes of double-sided welds, the transfer phenomenon of fatigue crack initiation location and the change of fatigue failure modes under different vehicle loading conditions are revealed. It is further discussed that how the change of the deck plate thickness and the weld foot length alters the fatigue failure mode under the same loading condition. According to the above analysis, in order to obtain the optimal fatigue performance of double-sided welds, an optimal design method based on the fatigue damage factor per unit time under real vehicle loading conditions is proposed. The analysis results show that the fatigue failure modes of the double-sided welds of the U-rib-to-deck welded joint in the OSBD is determined by three factors: loading condition, deck plate thickness and weld foot length. According to the optimization factor proposed in this paper, the thickness of the deck plate and the length of the weld foot can be reasonably determined under different traffic loading conditions, so that the fatigue performance of the rib-to-deck joint in the OSBD is optimized.

Abstract:Plated grillage with combined openings was susceptible to complex failure behaviors as the main load-bearing structure of the superstructure on passenger ships subjected to deck loads. Additionally, the deformation and stresses generated during the welding of the plated grillage complicated the prediction of its failure behavior. In this case, a new partitioned inherent strain method and nonlinear finite element method were used to simulate the welding and loading process, and experiments were designed and carried out to make comparisons, unveiling the influence regulations between the failure behavior of the structure and the loading condition, the initial welding state. This research on the failure mode analysis of plated grillages could provide references for the optimization of the structural form of plated grillages and the cargo loading scheme on the deck of a real ship.

Abstract:The fatigue life assessment of deep-sea pressure hulls needs to consider its load characteristics reasonably, including short-term overloading and load-sustaining at a certain depth in a load cycle lasting several hours. In this case, the traditional reversal-based crack growth rate model is no longer applicable while the small-time-scale model which can consider the crack growth process in any small interval highlights its advantages. This paper presents an improved small-time-scale crack growth rate model with consideration of overloading and load-sustaining effects as well as the stress/strain constraints. The formula for crack tip opening angle is modified to more accurately demonstrate its changing tendency from crack opening to final fracture. A concept of plastic zone influence range is proposed to express the effect of the plastic zone size and the overload ratio. Creep effects at load-sustaining period at high stress level are included into calculation. Finally, model validation and parametric analysis are conducted. The improved model can be reasonably applied for fatigue life prediction of deep-sea pressure hulls.

Abstract:<p>The paper presents experimental and finite element analyses of the ultimate strength of a stiffened panel with a large opening on the plating and multi small openings on the longitudinal and transverse girders and subjected to combined uniaxial and lateral loads. This investigation provides practical information to estimate the effect of the large and small openings on the ultimate compressive strength of deck panels in large passenger ships. The experimental results are presented in terms of the load–displacement and strain data, overall and local structural collapse, showing agreement with the simulations performed by the ABAQUS finite element solver. The results show that the abnormal shape of the plate opening and its reinforcements change the overall buckling and collapse behaviour of the stiffened panel under compressive loads. The finite element analysis also discusses the effect of initial imperfections, lateral loads and various openings on the ultimate compressive strength of stiffened panel.</p>

Abstract:This paper presents an investigation on the ultimate strength of a ship hull girder model with openings. A model with relatively large openings in a group of compartments is designed and tested up to the ultimate bearing capacity under a pure sagging bending moment. The failure mode, the load-displacement curve and the ultimate load of the experimental model are analysed by the nonlinear finite element method. The ultimate load of the experimental model is also calculated using a progressive collapse method (Smith based method). The results of the numerical calculations are compared with the results of the model experiment and they are found to be in good agreement. The relative error between the numerical method and the experimental result is −3.9% and 1.6% for ABAQUS and LS-DYNA models respectively, and the relative error between the progressive collapse method and the test result is −1.3%. The experimental results of this paper can provide the basis for the validation of numerical simulations and theoretical methods, and they provide a reference for the design of the ultimate strength of similar ship structures.

Abstract:In order to reduce weight and facilitate maintenance, servicing and inspection, ship structures usually have openings and cutouts. However, these modifications frequently weaken the plates' ability to buckle. In this work, the combined effects of geometric discontinuities (such as openings and cutouts) under diverse in-plane loads (such as horizontal compression, vertical compression, biaxial compression, and in-plane edge shear loading) are taken into consideration as the perforated plates located in the double-bottom floor of a 3000 m3 wellboat are investigated for their linear and elastic buckling behavior. In order to assess the effects of various stiffening methods and their interactions with different load scenarios, as well as fluctuating plate slenderness ratios, the research combines experimental and numerical analyses. This thorough study identifies the best stiffening technique and suggests alternative geometries that minimize structural weight through topology optimization. The research's findings are helpful in comprehending the mechanisms underlying structural failure and in offering design and recommendation guidelines that enhance hull inspections and the assessment of structural flaws.

Abstract:With the continuous utilization of renewable energy, the number of onshore wind turbines is increasing. Small design improvements can save costs and facilitate the maintenance and repair of the wind turbine foundation. In this paper, an existing gravity expansion foundation with an anchor cage is improved. Our improvements further expand the space inside the foundation and reduce the length of the anchor bolt, which could reduce the costs and facilitate construction. To study the performance of the new foundation, a three-dimensional finite element model of the foundation–soil–anchor bolt was established via a finite element simulation. The damage evolution of the foundation was simulated with the concrete damage plasticity model (CDP). The separation ratio, foundation settlement, inclination ratio, reinforcement stress, foundation stress, and foundation damage of the new foundation under ultimate load conditions were analyzed. The influence of parameters h1 and b3 on the performance of the foundation was further studied. The finite element analysis results show that the tensile stress of concrete can be effectively reduced by appropriately increasing the corbel height and ring beam width of the foundation. The results also show that the improved wind turbine foundation force is reasonable and can meet the use of the actual project requirements on the level of finite element analysis.

Abstract:Due to the depletion of near-shore resources and the complex environment of offshore deep-water open port construction, a new barrel-pile foundation composite structure wharf is proposed. In order to provide technical support for the engineering design and application of the new structure, research is carried out on a physical model. Through setting up a series of group tests, on the basis of fully understanding the wave impact characteristics of the wharf panel of the new structure: (1) the relationship between the wave crest height, impact force, and various influence factors is established; (2) a calculation method and formula are put forward (compared with the physical model test data, the calculation formula results have good accuracy); (3) according to the formulas of wave crest height and panel impact force, a determination method for the wharf surface elevation of the new structure is given. In addition, due to the limitations of the test conditions, it is suggested that the physical model should be further verified for a complex transverse and longitudinal beam structure or extreme sea conditions, such as traveling wave breaking and wave inundation of the wharf.

Abstract:Ultra-large container ships face challenges in structural strength under complex sea conditions. The traditional equivalent design wave method inadequately considers nonlinear wave effects, leading to inaccuracies in strength assessments. This article improves the method by incorporating nonlinear wave effects and optimizing wave spectrum parameters to better simulate structural responses. A study on a container ship, using refined wave load calculations and finite element analysis, focusing on stress distribution in critical hull areas. The findings show that the enhanced method more accurately reflects real loading conditions, confirming the ship's structural soundness and offering optimization suggestions for improved safety and longevity.

Abstract:The direct internal force method of equivalent normal stress analysis for the base surfaces of arch dams is presented in this paper.From the results of 3D FEA of Xiaowan arch dam,the distribution of arch abutment forces、thrust angles and safety factors is studied.The results show that the decrease velocity of base surfaces anti-slippage safety factors is less than the overloading velocity,and the thrust angles at different elevations increase during overloading,which reveal the internal mechanism of good performance of arch dam during overloading and the safety factor of the arch dam is underestimated by rigid body limit equilibrium method.
