Abstract:Because the dissociated bromine in CuBr lasers has serious effects on the lifetime of CuBr lasers and the stability of the discharged plasma, it is important in long-lived sealed-off CuBr lasers. The adsorption of bromine on the surface of the copper around the electrodes was measured by a transmission electron microscope and an x-ray energy dispersive spectrometer. It was found that the bromine dissociated from the CuBr molecule by collision in the laser discharge plasma is a negative bromine ion; no positive bromine ion existed. On the average, the atomic percentage of the adsorbed bromine is about 20%. The radial distribution of the atomic percentage of bromine around the copper anode is given and has been explained qualitatively.

Abstract:By elastic recoil detection (ERD) the stopping powers have been measured for F-19 and Cl-35 ions at energies from approximately 0.29 to approximately 0.42 MeV/nucleon in Ag films. The results are compared with the semiempirical values of TRIM 90 and previous experimental values.

Abstract:Energy loss of 0.45-5.0 MeV 4He ions in Au and Ag films were measured with the Rutherford backscattering method, and the stopping powers at lower energy range were extracted by comparing with that determined by Anderson et al. at higher energy range. Significant deviation between the experimental data and the semiempirical calculations by TRIM-90 appears around the stopping maximum. The accuracy of our results was expected to be ±1%.

Abstract:The stopping powers for 0.3–6.4 MeV 12 C ions in C, Al, Ti, Cu, Nb and Ag have been measured with the transmission method. The experimental data on stopping power are compared with evaluated values using LSS theory, ZBL semiempirical model predictions and previous experimental data. The results show that there is significant discrepancy between present work and LSS theory; for C in Al, ZBL calculations quite agree with our measurements, yet for C in other stoppers, those cannot reproduce most of present experimental data; our work consists mostly with previous measurements. Moreover, present stopping power data exhibit apparent Z 2 -oscillation.

Abstract:The stopping powers for 0.5-5.2 MeV 11B ions in the C, Al, Ti, Cu, Nb, and Ag targets have been measured using a transmission technique. The experimental error is about 3%. The results are compared to the TRIM-91 calculation and fitted to an empirical formula. Our measurements for 11B in the Al target are reasonably consistent with Ziegler's compilation. However, for the other five stoppers, significant deviation is found. The effective charge deduced from our experimental measurements appears to have a clear dependence on the stopping medium. The electronic stopping power at low energies exhibits a strong Z2 oscillation, which becomes weaker with increasing energy of boron ions.
Dynamics of Br Electrosorption on Single-Crystal Ag(100): A Computational Study

Abstract:We present dynamic Monte Carlo simulations of a lattice-gas model for bromine electrodeposition on single-crystal silver (100). This system undergoes a continuous phase transition between a disordered phase at low electrode potentials and a commensurate c(2X2) phase at high potentials. The lattice-gas parameters are determined by fitting simulated equilibrium adsorption isotherms to chronocoulometric data, and free-energy barriers for adsorption/desorption and lateral diffusion are estimated from ab initio data in the literature. Cyclic voltammograms in the quasi-static limit are obtained by equilibrium Monte Carlo simulations, while for nonzero potential scan rates we use dynamic Monte Carlo simulation. The butterfly shapes of the simulated voltammograms are in good agreement with experiments. Simulated potential-step experiments give results for the time evolution of the Br coverage, as well as the c(2X2) order parameter and its correlation length. During phase ordering following a positive potential step, the system obeys dynamic scaling. The disordering following a negative potential step is well described by random desorption with diffusion. Both ordering and disordering processes are strongly influenced by the ratio of the time scales for desorption and diffusion. Our results should be testable by experiments, in particular cyclic voltammetry and surface X-ray scattering.

Abstract:Whether photoemission probes surface or bulk properties has long been a topic of interest and debate. This work employs angle-resolved photoemission to map the electronic structure of Ag films of varying thicknesses prepared on Si(111). As expected, the discrete quantum-well states or subbands observed at small thicknesses merge into a continuum as the film thickness approaches the bulk limit. However, a number of discrete states remain isolated within gaps or pockets in the bulk continuum. While these Ag surface states have been predicted previously by calculations, most are experimentally identified herein only for the first time. Copyright (C) EPLA, 2009

Abstract:The energy losses of ~(0.273-3.334) MeV protons in Lithium Fluoride thin films deposited by vacuum evaporation onto self-supporting Al foils have been measured using the transmission method. The thicknesses of selected and used Lithium Fluoride/Al target samples were accurately determined via systematic energy loss measurements for alpha particles from a very thin mixed 241Am/239Pu/233U radioactive source. The samples were investigated in detail for their stoichiometry and their impurity contents by backscattering Rutherford spectrometry and nuclear reaction analysis. Then, Lithium Fluoride stopping powers have been determined with overall relative uncertainty of less than 2.7% arising mainly from errors in the determination of target sample thicknesses. These S(E) data are reported and discussed in comparison to previous experimental data sets from the literature and to values calculated by the Sigmund-Schinner binary collision stopping theory both for molecular Lithium Fluoride and for the Lithium Fluoride compound assuming the Bragg's additivity rule. Our S(E) data show to be in excellent agreement with the latter theory for molecular Lithium Fluoride over the whole proton energy range explored, which supports the use of modified hydrogenic wave functions for evaluating atomic shell corrections in the case of low-Z2 target materials. In contrast, they exhibit a slightly increasing deviation from theoretical values derived for the Lithium Fluoride compound with assuming stopping force additivity as the proton energy decreases from ~400 Kev towards lower proton velocities.

Abstract:Bright silver coatings were successfully prepared in deep eutectic solvent (DES) using the additive KBr in choline chloride-ethylene glycol (ChCl-EG, molar ratio 1:2). The results show that the reductive peak potential of the silver coordination ions shifts negatively with increasing KBr concentration. Relevant electrochemical parameters were calculated, such as the transfer coefficient α = 0.258 and the diffusion coefficient D = 1.04×10 −6 cm 2 ·s −1 . The effects of temperature were investigated for the electron transfer activation energy E A =23.144 KJ·mol −1 and the diffusion activation energy E D =42.281 KJ·mol −1 . The adsorption of bromine ions on the electrode surface was demonstrated using the impedance potential method and the impedance frequency method to derive differential capacitance curves. Simulation results from Material Studio software confirmed that bromine ions are mainly adsorbed on the hollow (fcc) sites on the crystalline surface of the copper electrode (100). The addition of KBr causes changes in the microstructure of the silver coating.

Abstract:In this work, the stopping force of protons in Pt, Mo, and Cr foils was measured at energies between 325 and 900 keV using the forward scattering method. Obtained results were compared with predictions from the semi-empirical code SRIM, the purely theoretical code DPass, and shellwise local plasma approximation with Levine-Mermin dielectric function (SLPA-LM). Both theoretical predictions underestimate experimental data for Pt at the energies measured. However, the theoretical calculation results for Mo, and Cr displayed good agreement with experimental data over the measured energy range. The obtained results were also compared with data from the literature, which displayed experimental discrepancies, especially for Pt and Cr stopping while a very good agreement between all experimental data was observed for Mo data.

Abstract:The high-pressure behavior of SnBr4 has been explored by angle dispersive X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, optical absorption/transmission measurements, and ab initio calculations. The joint of experimental and theoretical results shows that there is a crystal-crystal transition induced by molecular dimerization, which begins at similar to 10.8 GPa and completes at 21.5 GPa. Above 21.5 GPa, the gradual crystal-amorphous transition induced by the molecular dissociation appears, and the sample remains in partial amorphous state up to 43.8 GPa. At similar to 40.3 GPa, the possible insulator-metal transformation is discovered by in situ optical transmission measurements. It is proposed that the observed amorphous phase is a nonmolecular phase by theoretical calculations.

Abstract:The range distributions of Au ions with three implanted energies ( E i =1230, 2130, 3030 keV) in silicon were measured using Rutherford backscattering technique (RBS). The projected ranges were obtained and were larger than those of the TRIM-91 calculation. The nuclear stopping power S n calculated by Biersack general potential and the electronic stopping power S e = A ( E / E 0 ) P generated from LSS theory were used to fit the experimental data. Then the values of parameters A and P in the electronic stopping power formula S e = A ( E / E 0 ) P were determined. Significant discrepancies of the electronic stopping power between the experimental results and the TRIM-91 calculations were observed.

Abstract:We investigate the static and dynamic behaviors of a Br adlayer electrochemically deposited onto single-crystal Ag(100) using an off-lattice model of the adlayer. Unlike previous studies using a lattice-gas model, the off-lattice model allows adparticles to be located at any position within a two-dimensional approximation to the substrate. Interactions with the substrate are approximated by a corrugation potential. Using Density Functional Theory (DFT) to calculate surface binding energies, a sinusoidal approximation to the corrugation potential is constructed. A variety of techniques, including Monte Carlo and Langevin simulations, are used to study the behavior of the adlayer. The lateral root-mean-square (rms) deviation of the adparticles from the binding sites is presented along with equilibrium coverage isotherms, and the thermally activated Arrhenius barrier-hopping model used in previous dynamic Monte Carlo simulations is tested.

Abstract:We demonstrate that Ag(I) complex can fix bromide on the nano crystal surface, reduce surface trap density, and as a result efficiently passivate the surface of CsPbBr3 nanocrystals. This passivation makes the photoluminescence (PL) intensity increase several times. The PL kinetics study clearly shows that the decay lifetime increased after the passivation. TEM and XPS analyses demonstrated the existence of Ag on the nanocrystal surface. In addition, we utilize single-particle spectroscopy combined with in situ light analysis to further confirm the PL enhancement effect. On the contrary, the passivation leads to the extraordinary photostability of CsPbBr3 nanocrystals, with 80% PL intensity retained after UV illumination for 5 days under ambient conditions.
