Abstract:The"abstract human being"is the theoretical basis of "realistic individual".Marx’s criticism on the"abstract human being"began with"1844 economy philosophy manuscript"published in "The German Ideology",which presented the development of the"realistic individual"from a simple conception to a mature one."Realistic individual"is specifically identified in the process of production and relevant social relations.The basic characteristics of "realistic individual"can be understood from several integrations: natural and social,perceptual and rational,interests and needs,material production and human life itself.As a philosophical conception,"realistic individual"is quite abstract."The people"is the logical extension under certain historical conditions of "realistic individual",which tends to be abstract."People in civil society"is a"regression"and concrete manifestation of"realistic individual"in the contemporarily social and political life and is also the reflection of time spirit.Reshaping the "people in civil society"and constructing civil society are the request of the time.
Temporal Changes in Individualism and Their Ramification in Japan: Rising Individualism and Conflicts with Persisting Collectivism

Abstract:Many studies have shown that American culture has become more individualistic over time. However, it was unclear whether other cultures, especially East Asian cultures, have also shifted toward greater individualism. Therefore, this article reviewed studies investigating temporal changes in individualism in Japan and their ramifications on psychology and behavior. Japan has experienced rapid and dramatic economic growth and urbanization and has adopted more social systems based on individualistic concepts in various contexts (e.g., workplace, school). Recent studies have suggested that, along with these socioeconomic changes, Japanese culture has become more individualistic over time. Specifically, the divorce rate increased and household size decreased. Moreover, people give more unique names to their children and dogs, and individualistic words such as "individual" and "uniqueness" appear more frequently in newspapers. Furthermore, social values became more individualistic. Yet, it has also been shown that some collectivistic values still remain. As a result, people have difficulty in adapting to this coexistence, which injures interpersonal relationships and well-being. This paper discussed how Japanese culture changed over time and how such changes affected Japanese psychology and behavior.

Abstract:A lexical approach was employed to investigate the personality structure of Japanese personality-relevant descriptors. The vocabulary in this study comprised 463 words extracted from Japanese dictionaries using a broad word-selection strategy, identified as suitable for expressing personality based on a separate study involving respondents in their 20s. The analysis was based on self-ratings from 755 individuals aged 20 and older for 463 words, including 325 adjectives and adjectival verbs, 24 nouns, 97 verbs and compound words, and 17 adverbs. All surveys were conducted online. Ipsatized data was subjected to principal component analysis with equamax rotation, and the content of components was examined at each hierarchical level, ranging from one- to ten-component levels. The results supported the replicability of the personality structure models derived from multi-language analyses, such as Big Two, Big Three, Big Six, and Multi-language Seven. However, this support does not extend to the Big Five model. Its characteristic lies not in the emergence of unique and novel components exclusive to Japanese language but in the combinations of subcategories classified in previous studies at each hierarchical level when forming components.

Abstract:In human relations, the agony on the ‘world’ that the protagonist, Oba Yozo experiences, is essentially related to lifes of modern humans. Since the ‘world’ to Yozo is ‘others’ incomprehensible, this ‘world’ is the object being at odds with others. However, Yozo being faced with the apprehended ‘world’ is trembling with fear in relation with others. Even though he attempts to look for his nest in the ‘world’, Yozo eventually becomes a ‘disqualified person’ deprived of human qualification. In this way, the ‘world’ that Yozo who is harassed by worldly passions is not the ‘world’ as ideology, but the ‘world’ which an individual experiences in human relations. In No Longer Human, the disputed ‘world’ is formed in human relations. In association with relations in others surrounding Yozo, to examine closely the essence of the ‘world’ that Yozo himself experiences is very important in this study. It is just the theory of ‘amae’ (playing on anther’s affection) examined and systematized by Doi Takeo to be available to understand Yozo’s life in face of the ‘world’. In Yozo, the fear of human relations and the sense of alienation for the ‘world’ is a result that the feeling of uneasiness for the ‘world’ without ‘amae’ is amplified. Therefore, this study purposes to read the perception for the ‘world’ flashed by man character, Yozo’s eyes appearing in No Longer Human by making use Doi Takeo’s the theory of ‘amae’ psychology. This study makes a division as three classes concerning ‘amae’ formed in human relations of Yozo. Firstly, it is just the ‘world’ that Yozo can not play on affection(family, Shizuko, and Hirame). Secondly, it is the ‘world’ that Yozo can play on affection(Tsuneko, Prostitutes, and Madam). Finally, it is the ‘world’ that Yozo can play on affection and that the lost ‘world’(Shigeko, Yoshiko, and Horiki).

Abstract:The bivalent fear of evaluation model explains the association of fear of evaluation and heightened social anxiety via concerns of social reprisal (CSR) and disqualification of positive social outcomes (DPSO). The constructs of the model may differ in individualistic (e.g., Australia) and collectivistic countries (e.g., Japan); however, no study has examined the model, including CSR, in collectivistic countries. This study develops the Japanese translation of the Concerns of Social Reprisal Scale (CSRS) and examines constructs of the bivalent fear of evaluation model in Japan. Overall, 496 participants completed CSR and social‐anxiety‐related questionnaires. Exploratory factor analysis revealed a 1‐factor structure for the Japanese translation of the CSRS. Convergent validity and internal consistency were supported by significant relationships between social‐anxiety‐related variables and high McDonald's ω coefficient. Discriminant validity was partially supported by higher correlation between the CSRS and DPSO scale than correlation to the fear of negative evaluation scale. Path analysis revealed that the best fitting bivalent fear of evaluation model is similar to the individualistic country model, although DPSO contributes to social anxiety symptoms more than fear of positive evaluation.

Individualizing Japan: searching for its origin in first modernity

Abstract:Since the mid-1990s Japanese society has entered a period of major change. The previous patterns of social order and social integration have collapsed, and it has become increasingly difficult to envision a stable life course for oneself. The 'secure' foundation has been weakening and anxiety has spread at an accelerated pace. Japan could enter the age of second modernity, or reflexive modernization. In Japan's first modernity, the mechanism responsible for risk management, an integrated society, and stabilized social order, was, first, private corporations that guaranteed long-term stability for employees and their families (company-centrism) and, second, land development rapidly implemented under the guidance of bureaucrats (developmentalism). From the 1990s, these systems were fundamentally destroyed by globalization and neoliberal policies. Private corporations limited the groups that could benefit from the seniority wage system, undermining in-house welfare benefits. The government abandoned its role of improving the industrial and economic conditions of surrounding areas through offering public works projects. After these risk-stabilizing mechanisms were gone, two problems became conspicuous - poverty among young workers in urban areas and the collapse of the local community in marginal areas. As the seniority wage system and lifetime employment were substitutes for the public social security system, public measures to deal with poverty remain inadequate. Now, the individualization of the family has advanced somewhat under compulsion as the rate of unmarried people and the divorce rate have climbed. The Japanese have a tendency to seek 'self-realization'; at the same time, they also want 'secure employment'. Thus, they are torn between individualization and the desire for security. What is now necessary is a more stable system that will ensure them adequate material and spiritual 'elbowroom' to allow them to make their own choices.
Attitudes Towards Self-change: A Comparison of Japanese and American University Students

Abstract:This study examined attitudes related to the possibility of changing cognitions and behaviours among samples of college students in the United States and Japan. Students were asked to identify three things about themselves that they wanted to change, the method they would use to effect these changes, how difficult they thought making such changes would be, and how much they desired to make the changes. Japanese and US students differed significantly in the frequency with which they mentioned all seven aspects of the self that were targeted for change. Students in the United States expressed a desire to improve their sociability, academic achievement and cognitive abilities, physical appearance, and sense of individuality. Students in Japan were most concerned about enhancing their relationships with others, self-control and motivation, and ability to manage practical affairs. In addition, US respondents were more likely than their Japanese counterparts to use behaviour-oriented strategies, to believe it was easy to make self-changes, and to indicate a strong desire to improve the self. The findings are discussed in the context of theories describing different cultural construals of self, and of empirical research on differences between collectivistic and individualistic cultures.

The Development of A Brand Personality Adaption Model : Based on 19 Case Studies and A Consumer Survey on People of Four Nationalities

Abstract:What should Japanese firms do to build long-term relationships with across borders customers with different preferences? This study aims to examine this issue from a self-congruity perspective. The self-congruity theory revealed that customers have the tendency to consume products with a favorable impression with a brand personality that is similar to the self-concept of customers have. Previous studies have demonstrated this theory, but what seem to be lacking is the wide discussions on corporate strategies developments and implementations. Without propositions for practical uses it is hard for contributing to practical operations. Therefore, the previous studies were undertaken in order to seek a way of how adapt to customer having different preference with the self-congruity theory. Our study puts its focus on building a process model and conducts consumer questionnaire as samples with two firms. As a result it was possible to build a brand personality adaptation model. We propose the appropriate practical method for brand personality adaptation for practitioners.

The Impact of Authoritative, Authoritarian, and Permissive Parenting Styles on Children’s Later Mental Health in Japan: Focusing on Parent and Child Gender

Abstract:Few studies in Japan have examined whether children’s later mental health is influenced by the way parental authority is exercised, specifically with a focus on gender. Our main purposes of this study were to confirm the three-factor structure of the Japanese version of the Parental Authority Questionnaire (PAQ) and to verify its reliability and validity. We then used structural equation modeling to examine whether children’s later mental health was influenced by parents’ authoritative, permissive, and authoritarian parenting. The subcategories included in the Japanese version of the Clinical Outcomes in Routine Evaluation-Outcome Measure were chosen as mental health indices. A total of 1,320 people in Japan, including company employees, university students, and hospital staff members, were asked to recall and evaluate the parenting they received and to report on their current mental health. Confirmatory factor analyses verified the three-factor structure of the Japanese version of the PAQ, with a reduction in the number of items from the original version. The respondents, regardless of gender, evaluated their mothers as having been more authoritative than their fathers. Concerning the impact of parenting styles on respondents’ later mental health, both maternal and paternal authoritarian parenting styles worsened respondents’ later mental health, including symptomatic problems, risk to self and others, life functioning, and psychological well-being. Both maternal and paternal authoritative parenting had a beneficial impact on respondents’ later mental health. Simultaneous analyses of multi-groups demonstrated that the nature of these influences did not vary with respondent gender. We present the above results in detail, and discuss them from psycho-socio-cultural viewpoints.

Abstract:When learning a foreign language, it can prove difficult to become completely familiar with the intricacies of meaning and politeness as these elements have their roots in social and cultural contexts. In Japan, honour and politeness are of particular importance and, indeed, there exist honorific forms of the language. In the Department of Japanese Literature, Japan Women's University, Dr Kazuko Tanabe is working to improve the provision of language education for international students, which involves imparting understanding of Japanese society's honorifics. In her work, Tanabe is exploring the simplification of Japanese honorifics, looking at how far the language has transformed and the parallels with social changes. She is keen to shed light on the relationship between shifts in attitudinal expressions and social changes and is using a variety of analytical methods combining quantitative and qualitative research. In addition to analysing data, Tanabe constantly re-evaluates research methods and is not afraid to make changes. It is her belief that creating new research methods leads to new research fields. In order to advance the field, Tanabe is interested in collaborating with other researchers, particularly those involved in attitudinal expressions in foreign languages.

Abstract:Kierkegaard Sren was a famous philosopher of Denmark and was known as “father of existentialism”. His work crossed philosophy, theology, psychology and literature criticism.“Personality”was the core concept of his thoughts, contrasting to such collective concepts as “politics” and “society”, etc. He criticized strongly “reason” and Hegel's theory. He noted that modern society was a society towards “the crowd”, which resolved individuality and deprived the existence and responsibility and morality of one person. Kierkegaard presented a dialectical progression of existential stage: aesthetic, ethical and religious. Only in the religious stage, a person could perceive his existence by the sense of great pain and make a either/or choice. Choices were the essential task of one's existence. Choices occur in the instant, which is the point at which time and eternity intersect. Christian faith is not a matter of dogma. It is a matter of individual subjective passion. Faith is the most important task to be achieved by a human being, because only on the basis of faith does an individual can have a chance to become a true self.
Do People Perceive Products Differently when Buying for Self Versus for Others? Malleable Brand Personality in Gifting

Abstract:According to social identity theory, people behave differently in a social context than when they are by themselves because of social identity salience. Like people, brand personality changes depending on situations and context. There is lack of research investigating identity salience within the context of gifting and its subsequent impact on the perceived brand personality of a gift in different gifting situations. This paper proposes that in gifting situations of others, a social identity is activated which leads to change in the perceived brand personality of the same product purchased for self-gifting. Within the Japanese context, the hypothesis states that the excitement of brand personality dimension is more prominent in self-gifting than in gifting others, while competence and sincerity brand personalities are more prominent in gifting others than in self-gifting scenarios. To test these hypotheses, thirty-six brand personality traits (Aaker et al., 2001) of eight brands were evaluated by 251 respondents in Japan. Factor analysis and multiple regression results support the main hypotheses. The paper concludes with managerial implications and future research directions.

Abstract:This paper is aimed at exploring the contents,Chinese-Western differences of personality and its underlying mechanism.Western personality psychologist,such as Allport,Pervin,and Funder proposed different definitions of personality,with only similarities of viewing personality as both internal and unobservable characteristics and external and observable behavioral patterns,as the Latin origin of persona.Traditional Chinese thinking and current everyday behaviors reflected the same classification of personality as internal-external aspects of personality.According to both the Western and the Chinese versions of personality,the paper proposes that personality be composed of four facets,namely, behavior,inner experiences,motivation,and neuro-physiological responses,which are all influenced by culture to different degrees.Lexical hypothesis of personality research reveals that five or seven dimensions are the best descriptor of Western and Chinese personality structure.The cross-cultural research shows that the differences in both the number and the contents of personality dimensions are related to the differences in the thinking and evaluating styles between Western and Chinese individuals.Chinese are prone to combine different clues in the background to evaluate each of the behaviors,while Westerners tend to lay emphasis on the behavior per se.Different meanings assigned to behavior are proposed as the reason of personality structure differences in different cultures.Accordingly,behaviors aimed at adjust to the situation would be influenced more by situational factors and less by personality factors,such as being warm-hearted towards colleagues and supervisors.The more detailed situational requirements exist in culture,the more frequently individuals exhibit such kind of behaviors.However,even individuals who exhibit different behavioral patterns in different situations,say,inconsistency across situations,the intention or motivation of these behaviors,as part of personality,exhibit consistency across different situations.This demonstrates the importance and necessity of the four-folded/facet personality concept.Meanwhile,behaviors aimed at containing the integration of personal values and interests would be influenced more by personality factors and less by situational factors,such as leisure time activities and unobservable habits and intimate relations.The paper also addresses cultural influences on the relationship among personality,behavior,and adjustment to situations,and further research directions.As many cross-cultural psychologists point out,individual behaviors,described as Collectivism in Chinese culture,would be influenced more by situational factors,compared with those described as Individualism in Western cultures.Empirical evidences support the claim that in Chinese culture it is the indicator of mental health to be able to adjust to situational requirements,while it is the indicator of mental maladjustment to be unable to.For a Westerner,however,it is found that the cross-situational consistency of behaviors is the good indicator of mental health.Also discussed in the paper are implications of personality definitions and classifications of different behavior types in the cross-cultural research on personality.

Abstract:After the publication of Sociology in 1953 Kurauchi concentrated his time and energy into the theory building of the comprehensive and complex society and its structural change. This article traces the theoretical development of the comprehensive and complex society, which is to some degrees similar to société glabale by G. Gurvitch or Gesamtgefüge by T. Geiger, and characterizes it in comparison with Y. Takata's theory about it and T. Parsons' social system. As for its structural change, Kurauchi set up both 4 variables and 3 groups in connection with the comprehensive and complex society ; the former are law (Gesetz) and fate (Geschick), norm (Norm) and trend (Strom), and the latter, the past-oriented group (Vorgruppe), the present-oriented role group (Jetzt-gruppe) and the future-oriented group (Nachgruppe). It is attempted here to make clear the significance and relevancy of these variables and groups to the comprehensive society.Along with the theory formation, Kurauchi analyzed sociologically two paintings in indian ink by Sesshu, the Eightlobed mirror with Iching letters, landscape and a poem owned by Shosoin which was estimated to be made by Makibi Kibi in the T'ang dynasty, and the religious thought by Miki Nakayama, the founder of Tenrism. They are the works to adorn the last phase of his life. An attempt is also made to evidence through the analysis of his analystic procedures that Kurauchi is a researcher at the highest level as well as one of the most excellent theorists. In addition to this, this article makes clear that his sociological thinking of religion and his attitude toward it is deepened in the evening of his life.

Abstract:In Japan there is a culture of gift-giving, known as zōtōbunka. This culture is done every year in summer and winter to honor superiors or to maintain relationships between relatives. With the development of times and the incidence of financial crisis in the 1990s, this culture began to be abandoned by the Japanese because of various factors including the economic factors of capitalist society. This study analyzed using descriptive analytical approach with the main data corpus of books, electronic books, websites on the internet, news articles, magazines, and so on. Culture of gift-giving in Japan is explained also with cultural history that originated in China and the trend in Japan today. The conclusion of this paper described the problems in Japan's culture of gift-giving in addition to economic problems, the problem stems from a change or transition from an agrarian society to capitalist society.

Abstract:A brief intellectual history of the indigenization movement in Asia leads to the thesis that the generation of psychological knowledge is culture dependent. Indigenous psychologies go further and insist on viewing a target group from the natives' own standpoint. Psychological decentering underlies conceptions of human existence rooted in Asian intellectual traditions, in particular, relatedness between persons predominates in Confucianism. These conceptions demand new approaches to knowledge generation that signify a paradigmatic shift from methodological individualism to methodological relationalism. An implication is that relationships precede situations in the study of personality and social behavior. We define personality as the sum total of common attributes manifest in, and abstracted from, a person's behavior directly or indirectly observed across interpersonal relationships and situations over time. We rely on the notion that there are identifiable levels of cognition to develop a metatheoretical framework for reconstructing selfhood. Confronting the subject-object dichotomy opens the door to investigations of transcendent consciousness; confronting the self-other demarcation underlying Western theories leads to the construction of self-in-relations.
Personality as a Social Process: where Peter Giordano Meets Boris Parygin

Abstract:In this paper I comment on the "Individual personality is best understood as process, not structure: A Confucian-inspired perspective" article by Peter Giordano (Culture & Psychology, 23(4), 502-518 (2017)), which addresses the question of how to comprehend a personality which is continuously changing and varying with changes in social contexts and situations. The issue which Giordano turns up I believe to be of great importance and topicality in the quickly changing globalizing contemporary world. Giordano's paper highlights an important problem in the development of contemporary personality psychology, but much remains to be clarified concerning his process-centric model. I introduce the theory of Boris Parygin, which can make a contribution to the discussion of personality as a process. Parygin's theory addresses the same issues that Giordano focuses on: human personality exists and develops in the context of social situation. Parygin's theoretical model of personality involves two personality schemas: a "static" one and a "dynamic" one. The "structure" and the "process" -centered approaches are joint here to complement each other. Personality life-span development, formation of personality structures, is considered as a process of interaction and dialectical confrontation with the social environment, in the course of which the personality, originally engendered by social factors, builds up its autonomy and realizes its unique individual spiritual potential.

Abstract:The present paper was aimed at exploring the contents of,and differences between Chinese and Western concept of personality.In Chinese,the implications of personality changed along the 3000 years history of Chinese words evolvement and focused at two important meanings,one is the general evaluation and integration of various exterior behaviors of the individual,and the second is the conjecture on the individual's interior character based on the first meaning,moreover,there is significant interactions between exterior behaviors and interior character.In contrast,the evolvement history and current meaning of personality in English focused on the objective description of individual's behavior,and there exist direct relations between exterior behaviors and interior character.Furthermore,relations among the behavior facet and interior facets,e.g.,inner experiences,motivations,and physiological reactions,was more complex for Chinese,compared with Westerners.Harms to Chinese psychological science by sponging on Western theories and concepts of psychology without measure,and stringencies of applying psychological research along with Chinese tradition and current social development were also discussed.
