Abstract:Following the recent trends of globalization and regionalization, the idea of Asia has been revived in political, economic, and cultural fields. This essay examines some of the various uses of this idea in modern East Asian and especially Chinese history. The essay consists of four parts. Part One discusses the derivativeness of the idea of Asia, that is, how this idea developed from modern European history, especially the nineteenth century European narrative of "World History," and it points out how the early modern Japanese "theory of shedding Asia" derived from this narrative. Part Two studies the relationship between the idea of Asia and two forms of Narodism against the background of the Chinese and Russian revolutions-one, exemplified by Russian Narodism, attempted to use Asian particularity to challenge modern capitalism; the other, represented by Sun Yat-sen, attempted to construct a nation-state according to a socialist revolutionary program, and to develop agricultural capitalism under the particular social conditions of Asia. Part Three considers the differences and tensions between the "Great Asia-ism" of Chinese revolutionaries such as Sun and the Japanese idea of Toyo (East Asia), and it discusses the need to overcome the categories of nation-state and international relations in order to understand the question of Asia. Part Four discusses the need to go beyond early modern maritime-centered accounts, nationalist frameworks, and Eurocentrism in re-examining the question of Asia through historical research by focusing on the particular legacies of Asia (such as the tributary system) and the problems of "early modernity.".

Abstract:This thesis analyzes Japan's comprehensive development since World War II, and the trend of Japan's economic, political, military, and diplomatic strategy at the start of the 21st century. Based on this analysis, certain predictions are made. The challenges to Sino-Japanese relations resulting from economics and trade, political Right-deviationism in Japan, the influence of public opinion on bilateral relations, the American element, and the Taiwan issue are reviewed. In recent years Sino-Japanese political relations have deteriorated as the Japanese government has carried out a great-power policy featuring Right-deviationism. The current situation features cool political relations in a period of high economic and trade relationships. Economic relations must be curbed while political relations are being cooled to a certain extent. This requires that both China and Japan make joint efforts to improve long-term bilateral relations.

Abstract:Abstract As the Cold War prompted anxieties throughout Asia about the status of postcolonial state-building and decolonization, the possibility of friendship and cooperation between China and India despite their differing political and economic systems inspired hope and political repercussions far beyond their borders. This paper reveals how Japanese commenters, in their analysis of Sino–Indian friendship and both countries' respective political trajectories, saw the two countries as providing a rubric for a new type of politics. Utilizing an array of published, unpublished, and archival sources, I will study how diverse individuals, from the historian Uehara Senroku to burakumin activist Jiichirō Matsumoto, believed that Sino–Indian friendship, unlike the failed project of Japanese imperialism, could unite “Asia” in its struggle against imperialism amid the Cold War and accelerating decolonization. In following this model, they also believed that Japan could escape American hegemony and become “Asian” again. Japanese analyses of “China–India” as offering an “Asian” recipe for overcoming imperialism and navigating bloc politics help showcase how ideas of Asia continued to serve as a space for contemplating political possibilities during the early Cold War, transforming Japan from the region's former tutor to its pupil.

Abstract:The relationships among the four countries and six sides in Eastern Asia—— Sino-Japan, Sino-America, Sino-Russia, Japan-America, Japan-Russia, and Russia-America——are not determined by any individual but by common interests and internal and external contradictions involved. Meanwhile the judgement of situation and policy-making of any country also affect the relationships among all the countries. To construct a new international pattern that is good to China and not harmful to other countries requires superb diplomatic skills.
The Evolution of Political Thought in Japan and Its Impact on Sino-Japanese Relations

Abstract:The profound change of political thought in Japan is the key factor that affects the Sino-Japanese political relations at the beginning of the 21st century. Since the end of the Cold War, the politically rightward tendency in Japan, coupled with the rise of strong nationalism, has set back Japan's policy toward China. During Koizumi's reign, the decision-making mechanism in Japan had been excessively tempered by the Prime Minister himself, thus intensifying the contradiction between China and Japan, as well as alarming the Japanese society in general and insightful figures in particular. Abe Shinzo entered the political arena in such a context, not only affected by the trend of political thought, but also witnessing the damage done to Japan's internal politics and foreign policies by this very trend. After his election to become the Prime Minister, Abe has to think of getting rid of the aftermath of Koizumi's foreign policy and improve Japan's relations with China. Once the politically rightward tendency is somewhat checked, the Sino-Japanese political relations are likely to improve. In turn, the improved Sino-Japanese political relations would further check Japan's politically rightward tendency. However, if such a tendency rears its ugly head once again, the Sino-Japanese political relations would inevitably suffer setbacks.

Abstract:The first half of the 18 th century is not only the turning point of the European culture, but also the dividing line of its view on China. The cognition of the difference and antagonism between China and the West based on modern capitalism gradually took place of the effort of portraying the universality of them under the religious authority. In fact, both the Eurocentric approach with the personage of Hegel and Weber, and the China-centered approach representative of Frank and Pomeranz jointly indicate that the basic stand of the European view on China never disengage from the standard of their own. Their evaluation of China and the Chinese culture constantly changes with their different self-cognition and self-evaluation, and depends on their different demand on this alien culture. And how to realize the satisfying communication between different cultures is still a question requiring strenuous consideration and hard practice.

Abstract:Chinese-Japanese relations have become increasingly tense in recent years. It might be concluded superficially that the recent tensions originated from the historical issues and the bilateral sovereignty disputes over some islands. However, these tensions are deeply rooted in the structural contradictions of these bilateral relations, such as the conflicting national strategies of China and Japan, the relative balance of power between them, and the discrepancy of their interests in their games against the background of macro transition of the overall strategic pattern of the Asia-Pacific region. Furthermore, the U.S. strategic dilemma in this gaming process adds destabilizing factors to the development of China-Japan bilateral relations. The outcomes of the China-Japan tensions not only affect the rise and fall of the relative strengths of these two countries, but also have major influences over the general strategic arrangements of East Asia and the whole Asia-Pacific. Therefore, it is very meaningful to probe the deep-rooted causes of the Chinese-Japanese conflicts and to observe current China-Japan relations from the strategic perspective because some solutions might be discoverd in this way.

Abstract:The phrase East Asian (dong ya) comes from Japanese with painful wartime memories. Nowadays this phrase has become a cultural notion, a subject which draws much academic attention. Since the last decade,“East Asian Confucianism”, through the endeavor of Taiwan academia, has become an independent research field which has grown into the stage when its outcomes are ready to be summarized and reflected. To look for the future development of Confucianism in an era of globalization, we need both cultural pluralism and universal concepts to show respect to the“Other”and lay the foundation for dialogues between cultures. Also universal concepts can interact with“cultural conifdence”since conifdence means no ignorance which pay no attention to the“Other”.

Abstract:The quantity and quality of Japanese political studies in China are influenced by political developments in China and Japan, Sino-Japanese relations, and academic development of political science. After the collapse of Japan's bubble economy and the end of the LDP's long rule in the early 1990s, many Chinese scholars diverted their attention from economic issues and took more interest in Japanese political studies. Political issues such as the resurgence of nationalism, the rise of right-wing forces, the end of the '1955 system', the political origin of long and heavy recessions, the 'normal state', national strategy, and foreign policies have been discussed and debated. New approaches and perspectives such as the political pluralist approach, the new institutional approach, the ecological approach and the political process approach have been used. It is imperative to overcome the institutional, political, and financial problems in order to improve the state and raise the quality of Japanese political studies in China.

Abstract:Background The solidarity of East Asia, or its possible integration, and even the establishment of a union in the future, could not place hope on just spontaneous generation and development of the situation, but should rely on the self-consciousness and autonomous efforts of the people and politicians in East Asian countries. EU and other various organizations within the East Asia region, not only provide rich experience, but also offer a variety of possible ways and means for the solidarity of the East Asian countries. Methods Under the principles of human rights and rule of law, as well as on the basis of equality and consultation, the significance of East Asian integration consists in facing the history, historical ties and cultural heritage fully and independently, in addition to the assumption of the present and future needs, as well as the responsibilities and obligations which have to be taken in joint effort. Results and discussion East Asian Community, if it is possible, would become one of the main civilization circles of the world, and constitute the core of the modern world system together with the EU, the US and possibly other systems or communities of countries, meanwhile forming a civilization region with special characteristics of culture. Therefore, it bears responsibility for creative development of multi-civilization for human. Conclusions Viewing from the cooperation, transition and prospects of East Asia, the political and ideological differences between the East Asian countries and obstacles caused by them are easy to have change, while the social behaviors and ideational structures infiltrating in people’s daily lifestyles and attitudes plays a decisive role. Therefore under the premise of reaching the consensus to the maximum extent, maintaining the particularity of societies and cultures of different countries is the key point for future development of East Asia.

Abstract:Most scholars found explanations for Sun Yat-sen's lecture on Great Asianism from his ideological system.However,this lecture is close connected with The New Immigration Law and the Exclusion of Japanese, approved by the United States in 1924.It made Japan,the country aiming at leaving Asia and entering Europe,to face the choice of reorientation since Meiji Restoration.The Japanese people from all circles,began to think about whether they should return to Asia.Meanwhile,some voices of allying with the great country of Asia were getting more and more popular.However,the countries in East Asia were all lack of interest,for Japan implemented an aggressive policy in East Asia.At the beginning,Sun Yat-sen remained a quite reserved attitude.Till the voice of self-reflection appeared in the internal Japan,and other countries in East Asia had positive responses,Sun turned to strive for the support from Japanese government in order to unify China.But after failing in recourse to the Japanese government and parties,Sun turned to the Japanese people,and tried to unite all the Asian peoples,including the Russian,to counterwork the federation of power countries and the power countries adhered by the Japanese government and their politicians.So the lecture on great Asianism,delivered by Sun Yat-sen at the end of 1924,did not cater for Japan,but to aim at attaining the sympathy from the people who lived under the colonial rule by Japan.The understanding of those people on Sun Yat-sen's great Asianism,kept quite a distance to those of the politicians in China and Japan,as well as those of the subsequent scholars.

Abstract:Having gone through the vicissitudes of a history of thousands of years, the Chinese culture was firmly established on the basis of patriarchal clan system and small-scale farming economy, with aesthetic aspiration as its character -until recent times. When hit hard by western military forces, the Chinese people looked back on their own tradition with a hurt pride. They started to replace aesthetic aspiration with pursuit of technical progress, and learned to partition their culture into two opposed parts -the advanced and the backward. In such a case, the crisis of cultural identity and many other social problems arose, only to get worse with the nation’s march into modernization.
