Behavior Classification Hypothesis on Personality Structure and Cultural Implications of Chinese Personality

Abstract:This paper is aimed at exploring the contents,Chinese-Western differences of personality and its underlying mechanism.Western personality psychologist,such as Allport,Pervin,and Funder proposed different definitions of personality,with only similarities of viewing personality as both internal and unobservable characteristics and external and observable behavioral patterns,as the Latin origin of persona.Traditional Chinese thinking and current everyday behaviors reflected the same classification of personality as internal-external aspects of personality.According to both the Western and the Chinese versions of personality,the paper proposes that personality be composed of four facets,namely, behavior,inner experiences,motivation,and neuro-physiological responses,which are all influenced by culture to different degrees.Lexical hypothesis of personality research reveals that five or seven dimensions are the best descriptor of Western and Chinese personality structure.The cross-cultural research shows that the differences in both the number and the contents of personality dimensions are related to the differences in the thinking and evaluating styles between Western and Chinese individuals.Chinese are prone to combine different clues in the background to evaluate each of the behaviors,while Westerners tend to lay emphasis on the behavior per se.Different meanings assigned to behavior are proposed as the reason of personality structure differences in different cultures.Accordingly,behaviors aimed at adjust to the situation would be influenced more by situational factors and less by personality factors,such as being warm-hearted towards colleagues and supervisors.The more detailed situational requirements exist in culture,the more frequently individuals exhibit such kind of behaviors.However,even individuals who exhibit different behavioral patterns in different situations,say,inconsistency across situations,the intention or motivation of these behaviors,as part of personality,exhibit consistency across different situations.This demonstrates the importance and necessity of the four-folded/facet personality concept.Meanwhile,behaviors aimed at containing the integration of personal values and interests would be influenced more by personality factors and less by situational factors,such as leisure time activities and unobservable habits and intimate relations.The paper also addresses cultural influences on the relationship among personality,behavior,and adjustment to situations,and further research directions.As many cross-cultural psychologists point out,individual behaviors,described as Collectivism in Chinese culture,would be influenced more by situational factors,compared with those described as Individualism in Western cultures.Empirical evidences support the claim that in Chinese culture it is the indicator of mental health to be able to adjust to situational requirements,while it is the indicator of mental maladjustment to be unable to.For a Westerner,however,it is found that the cross-situational consistency of behaviors is the good indicator of mental health.Also discussed in the paper are implications of personality definitions and classifications of different behavior types in the cross-cultural research on personality.
