Abstract:This research aims at exploring the contents and structures of Western Conscientiousness dimension of personality. More than 1,500 subjects fulfilled both QZPS (Chinese Personality Scale) and the Conscientiousness scale of NEO PI-R (with 48 items). The QZPS was an indigenous questionnaire consisting 180 items and measuring seven dimensions and 18 sub-factors of Chinese personality. Factor analysis on items of NEO PI-R Conscientiousness yielded six factors, and were named by means of items included as: 1) continence and keep his/her words; 2) scrupulous and meticulous; 3) tactful and unflinching; 4) patient and steadfast; 5) success striving; and 6) workaholic. These six factors were different from the original six facets of Conscientiousness in NEO PI-R. Items in each of the six factors came from 2 to 4 facets of the original dimension. Factor analysis for combined variables of the six factors of Conscientiousness and 18 sub-factors of QZPS, and a five-factor solution emerged. The six factors of Conscientiousness distributed into four of the five-factor structure, and the fifth was consisted of two sub-factors of Emotionality dimension of QZPS. The four combined factors were Confidence and Resourceful, Honest and Precise, Self-Composed and Faithful, Resolution and Decisive. It indicated that there was no independent dimension of Conscientiousness in Chinese personality, and the contents of the Western Conscientiousness dimension had been dispersed into six of the seven dimensions of the Chinese personality structure. Those dimensions were Extroversion, Kindness, Behavioral Styles, Talents, Human Relations and Ways of Life. Based on this result, it was argued that, because of the Chinese-Western cultural difference, the personality scales and questionnaires developed in the Western cultural background could not indicate the Chinese personality accurately and completely. It suggested that indigenous study of the Chinese personality and, as general, Chinese psychological and social characteristics is indispensable.
