Abstract:It was aimed at exploring the indigenous content and structure of Western Agreeableness personality dimension, and the relations with Chinese personality structure by empirical investigation. More than 1500 subjects fulfilled both QZPS (Chinese Personality Scale, 180 items) and the Agreeableness scale of NEO PI-R (48 items). QZPS is an indigenous questionnaire measuring seven dimensions with 18 sub-factors of Chinese personality. Factor analysis on items of NEO PI-R’s Agreeableness yielded six factors listed here as a) honest and altruism; b) comprehensive and trust in others; c) prudence and self-trust; d) connotation and comity; e) humility and allowance; and f) affectionate and generous. These six factors were different with the original six facets of Agreeableness in NEO PI-R, instead, items in each of the six factors come from 2 to 5 facets of the original Agreeableness dimension. The Behavior Classification Hypothesis (BCH) of personality structure was then supported in this research. Moreover, it was argued that, because of the Chinese-Western cultural difference, the personality theories, scales, and questionnaires developed in Western background could not indicate the Chinese personality accurately and perfectly.
