Abstract:During the time span of over three decades since the initiation of the reform and opening up in China, against the background of drastic social transition, the values and social mentality of the Chinese people have undergone no less rapid changes, which are here termed as"Chinese feeling". On the macro level, the transition of Chinese social structure is endowed with noticeable duality. on the micro level, the changes in values and social mentality, or in"Chinese feeling", have also been characterized by their apparent marginality. This marginality, on the one hand, demonstrates that"Chinese feeling"is the mental crystallization of social transition and the spiritual legacy of two successive but heterogeneous eras as well as the turn from the former era to the latter. on the other hand, it constitutes a unique perspective of understanding changes in contemporary China and an opportunity to construct social sciences with Chinese characteristics. Chinese feeling, as an object of research, makes it possible for us to utilize this unprecedented transition in China as academic resources for social sciences and ultimately, it can help us to uncover the general rules concerning the changes of human social psychology.

Abstract:Previous cross-cultural comparisons of correlations between positive and negative emotions found that East Asians are more likely than Americans to feel dialectical emotions. However, not much is known about the co-occurrence of positive and negative emotions in a given situation. When asked to describe situations in which they felt mixed emotions, Japanese and American respondents listed mostly similar situations. By presenting these situations to another group of respondents, we found that Japanese reported more mixed emotions than Americans in the predominantly pleasant situations, whereas there were no cultural differences in mixed emotions in the predominantly unpleasant situations or the mixed situations. The appraisal of self-agency mediated cultural differences in mixed emotions in the predominantly pleasant situations. Study 2 replicated the findings by asking participants to recall how they felt in their past pleasant, unpleasant, and mixed situations. The findings suggest that both Americans and Japanese feel mixed emotions, but the kinds of situation in which they typically do so depends on culture.

Abstract:Along with many other Asian countries, China's communication differs from, and at times, conflicts with, the United States, which is considered more collectivist and low-contact than that of the United States. The topic of the chapter is mental, physical, and behavioral health. This ancient society is one of the world's oldest, with a history spanning many thousand years. These aspects of Chinese culture have significant weight in the Chinese community and society. Chinese participants care deeply about the cultural context, whether social scientists, humanists, or clinical psychiatrists. Based on several studies, Chinese culture influences various aspects of health, including physical and mental well-being, parent-child interactions and social connections, goals for individuals and groups, and health care delivery models. According to research on the subject, traditional Confucian cultural norms have influenced Chinese communication features. To maintain harmonious ties, the Chinese rely heavily on indirect communication. For them, the way you stand, your attitude, and even the tone of your voice all communicate a lot more than just words. They use imprecise language and may understate the significance of what they say. For the MA-CCC model, a brand-new approach has been presented. As long as this Confucian-influenced Chinese communication style persists, it will significantly impact Chinese society and communication between Chinese professionals and their western counterparts. However, the frequency of attachment terms was lower in Chinese literature; the findings showed a rising tendency for AC (affectionate communication) in recent decades. In addition, the frequency of love terms in Chinese novels was linked positively to individuality. As a result of societal shifts, affection sharing becomes more common in individualistic metropolitan settings, as these findings showa performance of 94.2% enhancement.

Online service sentiments in transformative society: a cross-cultural analysis

Abstract:This study examined the dual forces of national culture and rising consumerism on consumers' propensity to express their service sentiments and how intensely they do so. We text-mined online customer restaurant reviews from China, a transformative nation with rising consumerism (brought on by improved socio-economic conditions), and compared these with online restaurant reviews from Japan and the United States. Although Chinese and Japanese consumers share a similar set of Far Eastern cultural values, we found substantial differences in their online reviews. Chinese customers expressed a more significant number of sentiments with greater intensity than those in the US and Japan. Our findings demonstrate that Far Eastern cultures are not homogeneous and that subtle differences in cultural values can substantially impact customer expectations. The results also reflect the impact of rising consumerism in China and heightened consumer expectations. Overall, this study indicates that prevailing views of Eastern vs. Western consumer behaviors might no longer be valid.

Abstract:This study aims to analyze the relevance of the broad East Asian context by exploring the attitudes revealed in the works of ancient female Chinese poets from Korea, China, and Japan. It also aims to reveal the significance and value of these attitudes from a feminist perspective on East Asian women's literature. The ancient Korean, Chinese, and Japanese countries shared the same cultural and linguistic landscape of Confucianism and Chinese characters. The Chinese poetry of female writers in each country exhibited several tendencies: spontaneity and generosity, honesty and sincerity. These attitudes reveal the subjectivity of female writers in spontaneity and sincerity. Generosity represents the value of understanding and acceptance towards others and the world, while honesty allows for a broad readership appeal by surpassing cultural boundaries through the expression of genuine emotions.

Abstract:This study focuses on the nature of contrasting cultural values between China and Japan. Considering the values traditionally recognized as being unique and distinctive to China as well as those identified in previous research, four short stories addressing cultural conflict between Chinese and Japanese values were devised. Eight Japanese college students studying at universities in western Japan were interviewed in the winter of 2014 and were asked to openly give their interpretation of behaviors of those bound by conventional Chinese values. The qualitative analyses of the verbal data resulted in the extraction of coded concepts, which were then arranged to enable a comparison with our previous study that was similarly conducted with 18 Chinese college students. Five sets of contrasting cultural values between China and Japan were identified: 1) Respect for an individual’s mianzi (face) and original opinions versus respect for group consensus and opinions; 2) Prioritization of enthusiasm over planning in maintaining friendships versus priority on appointment and efficiency; 3) Wider human networking versus limited human relationships; 4) Openness and directness among good friends versus reservation and maintenance of respectful distance; 5) Social expected repayment from children to parents versus one-way devotion from parents to children. It is considered that raising people’s awareness of the historical background and social reasoning behind distinct cultural values—and the rationale behind them—would help them understand seemingly similar but, in fact, very contrasting cultural values of a neighboring country.

A cross-cultural investigation of Mandarin Chinese conceptual metaphors of anger, happiness and romantic love

Abstract:Background: A linguistic analysis of the emotional expressions of anger, happiness and romantic love in Standardised Chinese, as spoken in Taiwan was undertaken. It was hypothesised that: I. Comparable conceptual metaphors and cognitive models to those identified by Lakoff and Johnson (1980), Lakoff and Kövecses (1987) and Kövecses (1986, 1989,1990), also exist in Chinese; II. Multiple prototypical cognitive models for the conceptualisation of each emotion are demonstrable; III. Conceptual metaphors and their cognitive models have universal features which are related to physiological bases of emotional expression. Moreover, culturally specific features are the product of an interaction between human biology and social factors; IV. Moderating social factors influence the complexity of the emotion's structure; V. Social and cultural dynamics, from a diachronic point of view, are shared by various societies at different points in time; VI. Demographic variables such as gender, age, educational level, will not have any significant impact upon the use of metaphor and metonymy. Furthermore, place of residency and second language should not contaminate the data, given that the experimental subjects moved to their respective countries in adulthood; VII. There will be evidence to support a weak form of the Whorfian Hypothesis, where existing concepts guide or motivate the emergence of new concepts. Method: Subjects from Chinese speaking communities in Taiwan and the United States of America were interviewed using a survey method; each was required to report in writing their recent or most memorable angry and happy experiences, and a personal definition of romantic love in Chinese. Each narration was coded according to metonymy, metaphor and related concepts, as described by Lakoff and Johnson (ibid), Lakoff and Kövecses (ibid) and Kövecses (ibid). Frequencies for each metonymy and metaphor were compared, and the length of each narration was measured using linguistic units (Johnson, 1970) for each emotion. Results: Major metonymies and metaphors categorised for each emotion were found to be similar to those used in English. These similarities were largely orientational and to a lesser extent ontological in nature; while the majority of differences were found amongst the structural metaphors. Major metaphors for anger and happiness had an orientational and ontological reference, while romantic love was structural. The cognitive models which underlie each emotion included more than one prototype: They either described various aspects or stages of the emotion in question, or diachronically speaking, old conceptualisations that were in the process of being superseded by newer ones. The impetus for the preferences for certain models was determined by the state of social development for each respective speech community. Conclusion: In order to explore the emotion concepts across cultures it is judicious to examine each of the conceptual metaphors and cognitive models that relate to the emotional language in question. Thus, not all concepts of emotion are structured similarly, and, by inference, emotions in turn are much more than mere biological processes. Their conceptualisation constitutes specific cultural and social knowledge, from a Whorfian perspective. Therefore, similarities found in cross-cultural data are determined by a shared biology and synchronous exposure to evolving cultural and social environments.

Based on an introduction to relevant results achieved in the field of cultural psychology over the past few decades, this article summarized the characteristics of Chinese culture as relationship-based, collectivism and temporality-oriented. This is an important basis for studying the current situation and the development prospects of Chinese culture as well as the key to clarifying China's future political and social road. At the same time, kinship is crucial in Chinese culture. It is also the foundation for reestablishing Chinese social ethics and order.

Abstract:A cross-generic examination of the discursive representations of a changing rela- tionship to a specific subcategory of things that are observable in writings from early to medieval China, this essay suggests that these representations denote the appearance of a culture of sentimentality about old, worn-out things at the turn of the ninth century. This culture of sentimentality indicates a deep-seated anxiety about the blurred boundary, on a conceptual and ideological level, between humans and things, and bespeaks the complex dynamics in the relationship of self and other at a time of profound cultural and intellectual changes, in which the textual representations of dilapidated ordinary things of daily life participated. It anticipates and yet remains profoundly different from Northern Song antiquarianism, thus showing gaps and fissures in the neat, familiar teleological narrative of the “Tang-Song transition.”

Abstract:This paper compares affective meanings of various stereotyped social groups in U.S., German, and Japanese cultures along the three basic dimensions of emotional experience (evaluation, potency, and activity). Analyses exploring similarities in affective meanings between respondents revealed considerable consensus within cultures, but less across cultures. These analyses indicated greater consensus for the U.S. and German sample than for the Japanese sample, supporting past research which indicates that Japanese social perception is more contextualized than in Western cultures. Analyses of cross-cultural differences also identified meaningful patterns of culture-specific deviation, interpretable in terms of the placement of each national sample on cultural dimensions such as power distance, masculinity, and individualism/collectivism. We argue that affective meanings reflect the social order of specific cultures, making variations in consensus significant as affective meanings guide intergroup behavior and emotion.

Abstract:Collectivism and individualism embody eastern and western cultural value orientations respectively,presenting different cultural priorities in distributing and selecting group interests and individual interests.Based on the comparative study of Chinese and American cultures,this study is designed to analyze the differences and similarities between collectivism and individualism from the perspective of cultural value.Research shows that different thinking patterns,understanding of face,social relations,view of privacy,sense of obligation and standards of success are closely related to collectivism and individualism.Thus,Chinese culture can be described as "magnificence pursuit and group interest favoring;being frank inside,but conservative outside".American value set special emphasis on hard work,individual rights,and person to person relationship.With further comparison,the authors have found that different values have forged different thinking patterns for the Chinese people and the American people: Taichi pattern for the Chinese and linear for the American.In the field of intercultural communication,both differences and similarities should be realized to reduce cultural misunderstandings for global values and optimizing the effect of global communication.

Abstract:The emotional Psychology thinks that the nature of sentiment is actually a state of mood or a kind of negative subjective experience, which only occurs when the needs of a person cannot be satisfied by the matters in the objective world. This sort of experience is always presenting itself with a slightest touch of long lasting sorrows and sadness. The Eternal Regret Song is a rare combination of a ture love story and a talented and sensitive poet during the Mid-Tang Dynasty. The poem, full of the poet's deep regret on the tragedy of the fate of the whole human beings, thoroughly reveals his rich life experience and emotional grief of his time. Through the description of the awareness of death and the awareness of the loyalty of a wife to her lord, the poet, by upgrading the common feelings to the sense of beauty, thus finishes his poetic writing on the sentimental experience.
