Abstract:The idea of liberal education dates back to Aristotle's "eleutherion epistemon" and Cicero's "artes liberales".In the Middle Ages,this idea was embodied as "seven liberal arts".From the seventeenth century on,the concept of "artes liberales" married the idea of "gentleman" and "gentleman-scholar",and gave birth to the modern idea of "liberal education" in the eighteenth and nineteenth century Britain,which emphasized both "general" and "genteel",but the semantic focus shifted more and more from "genteel" to "general".In the twentieth century,liberal education lost its connection with "gentleman" and became the general education for all citizens,increasingly linked with the ideology of liberalism.Meanwhile,its semantic meaning changed form "learned and genteel" to "free" or "liberating".

Abstract:The tradition of general education can be traced back to ancient Greece and ancient Rome.By the late 19th century and early 20th century,the classical liberal arts education concept was converted into the modern concept of liberal education and general education,which was especially strong in the USA.After World War II,in the promotion of multi-power,as an educational philosophy and mode of education,liberal education or general education gradually spread to Japan,Germany,as a tool for promoting democracy.After 1980s,the modes of general education were gradually adopted in China and some European countries in response to the needs of the knowledge society for interdisciplinary talents and general skills.

Abstract:Liberal arts education is based on a philosophy that uses an interdisciplinary curriculum to cultivate critical thinking, creativity, moral reasoning, analytical skills, and a sense of social responsibility. As China continues to invest in higher education, faculty, administrators and policy makers are aware that a narrow focus on professional and scientific training is insufficient to enable students to meet today’s global needs and challenges. Through qualitative and quantitative research and document analysis, this article examines Chinese policy development and transformation regarding higher education and liberal arts education in general, and the current state of liberal arts education in three universities in Shanghai in particular.

Abstract:Although the humanities in China have enjoyed a long and rich tradition, they emerged only relatively recently as a separate group of university disciplines. In the classical period, learning in China was categorized according to diverse schemes such as the Six Arts, the Seven Epitomes, or the Four Branches. Research and education took place in different institutions: schools of classical learning; the Imperial College; academies as schools of private education; and Buddhist temples, or vihāra. Only from the end of the nineteenth century on were the humanities formally established according to the system of the modern university and its disciplinary principles. Three main elements characterize the development of the modern humanities in China. First, they were closely associated with the self-narrative of the new Chinese nation-state, and their disciplinary division was strongly influenced by the situation in European and American universities. Second, the humanities came into being as offshoots of theology and classical learning that gradually lost their sacred status. Finally, the humanities from their inception competed for dominance with the sciences. Today these three characteristics face transformative challenges.

Abstract:This paper, based on the analysis of China's “two-hop-over-three-level” situation from the rural society to the industrial society and then to the information society, this paper believes that the “full-person” nature of art culture and the dialogue between contemporary “cultural survival” and “three worlds” integration is of great significance; the liberation of man is the real liberation of productive forces; it is proposed that education should reproduce the whole world and promote the development of “full-person” through the artistic reorganization of various “nowness” resource structures.

Abstract:Instruction according to disciplines, the model which has acted an important role in academic transformation of modern china, was a complex product of interaction between the traditional inner changes and the western knowledge imported from outside. During the process in the educational refo rm in the late Qing Dynasty, the rediscovery of different education given to students in different studies, the academic tradition since Huyuan in the Song Dyna sty, has successfully led to the integration of western knowledge and traditional learning. With the advent of school system, division of disciplines and the de velopment of researching methods there occurs a picture so difficult to define, in which traditional knowledge order conflicts with the western knowledge system and they mingle with each other, Shuyuan and Xuetang, these two forms of places for studies exchanged their functions, Classics lose its leading role, while th e traditional academic system disintegrated in the end.

Abstract:In the intellectual and information society, humanities and the idea of a modern university are inextricably linked. A university is supposed to assume the role of inheriting cultural tradition and criticizing the political, cultural and other aspects of society. To train a student is to promote his self-knowledge, self-perfection, and self-development. This is called "maturity" education, which is synonymous with broad-base education. It is primary, whereas specialized education is secondary. People may be selective in their acceptance of a certain culture, minor or mainstream, but a university must be receptive of different cultures and turn itself into a free-thinking land endowed with varied spiritual resources.

Abstract:The communication between Wang Tao(1828-1897) and protestant missionaries in the Late Qing Dynasty focused on the Western religion and learning.When discussing Western learning,Wang Tao also used the term "literature," a term that would have great influence on the developmental history of pre-modern Chinese literary thoughts.While he had a systematic exploration into the development of Western learning and the Jesuits’ works in the Late Ming,Wang Tao didn’t elaborate on the concept of the term "wenxue(literature)," although he had mentioned Western poetry and other genres as well as some important Greek,Roman and British poets.Wang Tao’s experience and his understanding of Western literature were developed after the protestant missionaries introduced the Western concept of literature into China and recognized the term "wenxue" as the equivalent to "literature." The historical significance of the term still holds value to contemporary academic explorations into literary and intellectual history.

Abstract:Western history has experienced a long process since its origination in the times of ancient Greece, and the consideration of Western historians for the discipline itself started from the 16th century when the Renaissance was in its prime. From the first years of the 20th century, the studies of Western history also have gone through several phases. In methodology, the studies of Western history should lay stress on a dynamic research in the historical works, thoughts, schools, the tendency of times, etc. Meanwhile, the studies should attach importance to the comparative studies of the interaction between the Chinese history and Western history. Thus we could deepen our understanding and retrospection of Western history and society, and promote the development of Chinese history as a discipline in the whole.

Abstract:This paper,focusing on the relationship between humanism and Christianity,is divided into four parts.In Part One,the development,achievements and deviations of enlightenment thoughts in ancient Greece and Rome are summarized.In Part Two,the academic community of China has some deviating opinions and the rectification of Christianity towards enlightenment thoughts in Greece is pointed out.In Part Three,the secular humanism inherits the tradition of humanism,and also has some connections with the religious thoughts.In Part Four,the possibility of harmony between Christianity and humanism is explored.
