Abstract:The relationship between general education and specialty education has been an important issue in world higher education,and it has not been fully discussed or implemented either in theory or practice in China.This paper first introduces the new strategies adopted by the Yuanpei Program of Peking University in its implementation of general education and the impact of these strategies. The paper then examines the strategies of Yuanpei Program in dealing with the relationship be- tween general education and specialty education.Finally,relevant reform suggestions are ana- lyzed to highlight the major constraints in the implementation of general education in comprehen- sive research universities,which indicates that conditions are not fully ripe for an effective gener- al education in China today.

Abstract:The paper gives a summary review of Peking University's undergraduate-teaching reform since 1998 and concludes that there are three major reforms that are the offering of general-knowledge courses for all students,implementation of Yuanpei Plan and research on the undergraduate-training on the basis of discipline-based enrolment as well as seven minor reforms.These reforms have improve the undergraduate programs in this university and made itself closer to the first-class universities in the world.At the same time,further reform will become more difficult.The paper brings up seven problems related to its future reform,including the educational legislation according to University Regulations.

Abstract:In this paper,the history of general education was systematically reviewed,with the importance and necessity of general education for medical students preliminarily analyzed.It also discussed the practice of teaching reform on general education for medical students in Peking University,proposing that it return to normal with balanced development among nature sciences and social sciences and humanities.

Abstract:This paper,the authors analyze the updated texts of the reform documents of teaching programs in the six Chinese first-class normal universities in 2009.The results show that these universities have set up a new teacher education model characterized by general education-based broad-spectrum programs.This new model optimizes the structure of curriculum which pays more attention to the basic courses in arts and sciences,the variability of educational courses and the internship programs.However,compared with American teacher education practice,the model should be improved further in such aspects as clarifying educational objectives in more detail,and strengthening the integrations between the different parts of the curriculum.Moreover,the university-based model should be adopted in the near future.

Abstract:The first"Nation-wide workshop of general education and core courses"held in Tsinghua University between July,26 th and July,31st 2007 is a further deepening of the discussion about general education in recent years both in theory and in practice.Through its deliberate course ar- rangement,this workshop introduced the topic of"the ancient-modern and Chinese-Western quar- rels"into education practice,with an emphasis that education be regarded and reflected as a part of cultural enterprise.Distinguished by text-reading and section discussion,the core course program in this workshop is aimed at improving students' understanding of cultural classics,introducing them into substantial topics in the intellectual discussions and thereby solving the problems in the current education system.

Abstract:This qualitative inquiry examines the tensions that general education colleges face while initiating reform in China, how students characterize these tensions, and what conditions account for the tensions. The views of 18 college students were documented through individual semi-structured interviews to uncover the themes related to the tensions, and the transcripts of the interviews were analyzed using thematic coding. This study identifies multiple tensions that arise surrounding general education programs including the tension of the " tao of universities" versus the " use of universities," "general-discipline fusion" versus "general-discipline separation," and "core curriculum" versus "fragmented curriculum." The study also discusses possible ways of easing and resolving these tensions so that services and programs can be enhanced.

Abstract:This paper analyzed the economic and political background of general education in Hong Kong and Taiwan universities and introduced some of their typical ideas of general education.At present general education in these universities takes on a situation of diversity,whether in organization setup,course content or the way of option,each with its characteristics respectively.The present situation of general education in the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the National Taiwan University are specially introduced.Benefiting from their experience,mainland universities should have more freedom to run schools,and strengthen the construction and theoretical study of the general education system.

Abstract:Although it seems obsolete to analyse and criticise a curriculum from the point-of-view of “subject-centredness”, this is the situation we face during the Chinese basic education curriculum reform. This article gives a brief introduction to the ideas behind the development and practice of the Chinese curriculum reform and the progress of the reform since 2001. Several aspects of the reform are introduced: 1. Re-examining and revamping academic courses; 2. Adding general practical courses; 3. Diversifying the curriculum with local and school-based courses; 4. Providing elective courses for all students. We also give two examples to present the idea of the new curriculum and practice.

Abstract:Embedding general education in the Chinese university education system is a considerably complex systemic project, and a lack of institutional arrangements beneficial to general education has always been a key barrier in implementation. Currently, the main institutional restricting factors for university general education include substantial major-based education systems, scattered credit management systems, lack of a distributive elective system with interdisciplinary integration, and a vertically segmented course management system. In the process from popularizing to deepening general education, Chinese universities must move from imitating and transplanting toward local construction; establish the new ideal of undergraduate general education; focus on building featured, university-based fundamental general education curricula; and seek out a path that suits the institutional environment of Chinese universities.

Abstract:In recent years general education in Chinese universities has gone through rapid growth, which has led scholars to reflect on the motivations which underpin its current and future development. This paper establishes a framework based on the size of the universities together with whether the motivation is idealism or empiricism. This framework forms three typologies of general education in China, particularly from the perspective of curriculum design and student involvement. Three cases that each represent one of the three typologies are analyzed to depict the detailed characteristics. The main conclusion of the paper is that general education in its essence is an idealistic pursuit of a permanent goal, while in reality it is resource-dependent and rooted in historical conditions. China’s case studies provide a vivid example that general education reform starts with practical approaches of offering selective courses or building pilot zones and then by moderately increasing its scale and coverage, moving towards idealism across the spectrum. The key principals during the long journey are to avoid conformism, encourage innovations and maintain diversity.

Abstract:Curriculum ideological and political education is to integrate ideological and political education into the whole process of education. It is a “all-faculty, whole-process, all-around” education model that pursues the unity of knowledge imparting and value guidance, and finally achieves the purpose of “strengthen moral education for cultivating people”(“Li De Shu Ren”). General education is a type of curriculum system in colleges and universities, and is an indispensable part of curriculum ideological and political education. Based on a review of the historical development of general education, this article analyzes the challenges that general education faces in the “Great Ideological and Political Education”(The educational concept contained in the “Great Ideological and Political Education” emphasizes the combination of ideological and political education with social practice, focuses on integrating and connecting educational resources, advocates extending educational space from the classroom to society, and better meets the requirements of the times.), and finally puts forward some reference suggestions from the aspects of institutions, systems, and evaluation.

Abstract:This article surveys general education curriculum provided by nine universities which were initially included in the 985 Project.There still exist some problems such as lack of freedom in selecting subjects,too much courses concerning with application,a lot of similarities but lack of diversities and individualities among universities and etc.Therefore,firstly,Chinese universities should reconsider general education by a particular view of talents.Secondly,the universities should deal with relationship of different factors while conducting general education curriculum,namely,application and humanity,requirement and necessity,obligatory and option,unification and diversity.And thirdly they should estalish some institutions to guarantee quality of general education.
