Abstract:Purpose This paper aims to investigate the micro-plastic behavior of granular material in three-body friction interface and its effect on friction characteristics. Design/methodology/approach A numerical model of particle breakage in friction contact was constructed based on the discrete element method. The influence of friction pair working condition and internal bonding strength on the micro-plastic behavior of particulate matter was analyzed. A reciprocating linear tribometer was used to verify the simulation results. Findings The results show that when the granular materials are squeezed and sheared by the friction pair, a shear zone inclined to the left is gradually formed, which leads to particle breakage. The breakage of the particle leads to the reduction of load-bearing capacity and the increase of friction coefficient. Due to the differences in bond strength and friction pairs working conditions, the particle plastic behavior is divided into the following three states: elastic deformation, breakage and plastic rheology. Originality/value This study is helpful to understand the effect of the micro-plastic behavior of particles on the three-body friction characteristics.

Abstract:Friction and wear of polymers and their composites introduce further difficulty that polymers are simply affected by working conditions and sliding media. The disagreement between friction in polymers and metallic friction is resulting from the alterations in the elastic and plastic behavior of metallic materials and the viscoelastic performance of polymeric materials. It is expected that, compared to metals, polymers are easily to meet elastic distortion when in contact. The wear mechanisms are described through extensive categories: abrasive, adhesive, surface fatigue, and others. The influences controlling friction and wear of polymers are broadly argued. There are various mechanisms governing the tribological behavior of the polymer moving on metal tribosystems including transfer film, wear regimes, and pv-limit. The basics of polymeric composites and how numerous compositions and structures can affect their tribological behavior are explained.

Abstract:Abstract This article presents the mechanisms of polymer wear and quantifies wear in terms of wear rate (rate of removal of the material). Interfacial and bulk wear are discussed as well as a discussion on the wear study of "elastomers," "thermosets," "glassy thermoplastics," and "semicrystalline thermoplastics." The article also discusses the effects of environment and lubricant on the wear failures of polymers. It presents a case study on considering nylon as a tribological material and failure examples, explaining wear resistance of polyurethane elastomeric coatings and failure of an acetal gear wheel.

Abstract:A study has been made of the wear of the polymers, polytetrafluoroethylene, polypropylene, polyoxymethylene, high density polyethylene, poly(vinyl chloride), polyamide and poly(methyl methacrylate), during sliding against abrasive papers, polished steel and like polymer countersurfaces. With the exception of poly(methyl methacrylate) and, to a lesser extent, polytetrafluoroethylene, there is a reasonable correlation between the wear rate of the polymer against abrasive paper and an expression involving the ploughing component of friction, the hardness, the tensile strength and the elongation to failure of the polymer as measured in tensile tests. Adhesive wear rates for like-on-like sliding are approximately proportional to the abrasive wear rates against SiC abrasive papers, although the absolute values are about 105 times smaller. In the wear process, material is drawn from the polymer surfaces, producing wear debris in the form of sheets or layers. Such debris may contain cracks or flaws and become further fragmented or compacted together to form aggregates.

Abstract:The wear resistance of plastic ring plays an important role in composite seal.In order to select suitable anti-friction materials, this paper studied the micro-friction and wear of QT500 with five kinds of high molecular weight polyethylene（UHMWPE）,PTFE+40% copper powder, PTFE+7% carbon fiber, PTFE+7% carbon fiber +5%MoS 2 ,polyether ether ketone（PEEK）.Two materials, PTFE+7% carbon fiber and UHMWPE,were screened out for comparative experiments under different fretting stroke and lubrication conditions.The results show that the average friction coefficient of UHMWPE material increases with the increase of fretting stroke under both dry friction and oil lubrication conditions, and the friction coefficient of PTFE+7% carbon fiber material has little fluctuation with the number of cycles when it reaches a stable state.According to the test results, PTFE+7% carbon fiber is recommended when the fretting stroke is less than or equal to 0.2 mm, and UHMWPE is recommended when the fretting stroke is greater than 0.2 mm.

Abstract:Surface texturing to control friction and wear has been the focus of numerous studies in the last few decades. Despite this interest, understanding the underlying causes for surface texturing effects under different contact and lubrication conditions remains a subject of continuing controversy. Although there has been progress in the fabrication of precise surface textures and modeling of their influence in specific cases, many conflicting reports still exist concerning the effectiveness of surface texturing under certain contact conditions. This review therefore presents a critical assessment of the common understanding in this rapidly developing research field. First, the effects of surface textures under the operative lubrication regimes in the Stribeck curve, with a clear distinction between conformal- and non-conformal contacts, will be discussed. Finally, the strengths and weaknesses of various fabrication methods will be described, giving a summary of the fabrication methods with respect to their typical feature sizes, costs, and applicable materials. Special attention will be paid to the friction reducing mechanisms and their implications for the wear under different frictional regimes.

Abstract:The paper reviews recent progresses in fundamental studies of friction. The topics include the importance for understanding wearless friction, the origin of interfacial friction, and a simple model for stick-slip motion and energy dissipation. Great efforts have been made to predict friction quantitatively, but the successes are limited to few cases where continuum mechanics or molecular dynamic simulations are able to provide numerical results.

Abstract:The demand for reducing wear and friction has become the chief aim in the automotive industry nowadays. The usage of lubricant is not considered enough as there is still room for improvements. As a solution, much research has arisen towards what we called self-lubricating ideas, in order to reduce friction better than lubricant. This paper presents an overview wear mechanism and the interface of carbon-based materials. This paper will also discuss the interfaces by carbon as substrate and coating layer. The findings show that for metals, the predominant wear mechanisms were abrasion and fatigue. Meanwhile, for polymers and coating (DLC), they were abrasive along with adhesive wear. The surface roughness of the substrate plays a crucial role in increasing the excellent performance of the DLC coating. The interfaces of carbon elements definitely give huge impact on both self-lubricant materials and coatings where the coefficient of friction and wear rate changes drastically even with 1 wt.% addition. Nevertheless, a clear understanding of the factors that affect the tribological performance is very essential in performance improvement for potential applications.

Abrasive Sensitivity of Engineering Polymers and a Bio-Composite under Different Abrasive Conditions

Abstract:Two different test systems were designed to evaluate the tribological behavior of five engineering plastics (Polyamide-PA grades and Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene-UHMW-PE) and a fully degradable bio-composite (Polylactic Acid-PLA/hemp fibers) targeted to agricultural machinery abrasive conditions. Pin-on-plate tests were performed with different loads, sliding velocity and abrasive particles. The material response was further investigated in a slurry containing abrasive test system with different sliding velocities and distances, abrasive media compositions and impact angles. The abrasive wear, the change of the 3D surface roughness parameters, the friction force and contact temperature evolution were also analyzed as a function of the materials' mechanical properties (H,E,σy,σc,εB,σF,σM) and the dimensionless numbers derived from them. Using the IBM SPSS 25 software, multiple linear regression models were used to statistically evaluate the measured data and to examine the sensitivity of the material properties and test system characteristics on the tribological behavior. For both test setups, the system and material characteristics influencing the dependent variables (wear, friction, heat generation) and the dimensionless numbers formed from the material properties were ranked using standardized regression coefficients derived from the regression models. The abrasion sensitivity of the tested materials were evaluated taking into account a wide range of influencing parameters.

Abstract:Sliding bearings are critical components of the internal combustion engine. Friction and wear occur in the contact area between the shaft and the bearing. Significant wear can occur in poor working conditions or after a long service time, leading to the failure of the sliding bearing and affecting the reliability of the machinery. It is essential to investigate the wear performance of sliding bearings, understand their wear mechanism, predict their service life, and select wear-resistant materials and surface treatments. This paper reviews the current status and prospects of sliding bearing wear research, focusing on the classification of sliding bearing wear tests, wear testing machines, wear test research, wear prediction models, and future research prospects.

Abstract:This study involves the case of polymer–metal contact, where deformation and strain behavior play a significant role. In present work, a section of polymer gear is mated against steel gear, and the friction behaviors for different groups of polymer materials of PA 6G, PA 6G Mg, POM-C, PETP/PTFE, PA 66 GF 30 and Bakelite were experimentally studied. From the results obtained, all the materials coefficient of friction decreased significantly at the pitch point. This was attributed to the pure rolling at the pitch point and tangential traction, which was the dominant mechanism for resistance to motion. An unstable friction characteristic from flank tooth to the pitch point was evident in the low load conditions.

Abstract:It is realized that the addition of a small percentage of rigid nanoparticles to polymers significantly improves many of their mechanical properties, especially stiffness and strength. Such improvements are often attributed to the availability of large numbers of nanoparticles with huge interfacial areas compared to their macro- and micro-scale counterparts. In particular, from the tribological viewpoint, the small size of nanoparticles with homogenous dispersion in the matrix and good interfacial adhesion between nanoparticles and matrix are thought to be necessary requirements for a polymer nanocomposite. Material removal will be less since the nano-additives have similar sizes to the segments of surrounding polymer chains. Despite these positive effects due to the addition of nanoparticles, there are still some critical questions that are unanswered. Here, we review the fundamentals, recent progress and advances that have been made on the tribological aspects of polymer nanocomposites, particularly focusing on their wear (in dry sliding and unlubricated conditions) and scratch damage. The review shows that (a) it is not valid to assume that nano-fillers always improve wear/scratch (and friction) properties; and (b) material properties like modulus, hardness, fracture toughness or extent of wear rate or scratch penetration depth are not the sole indicators to compare and/or rank candidate materials. Several facets of wear/scratching or material response to the sliding processes require thorough understanding in order to determine parameters that control the surface integrity and material removal from polymer nanocomposites. This review also shows the apparent contradictions and false impressions on several material systems in many studies owing to poor characterizations of polymer nanocomposites and lack of quantitative descriptions of the observed phenomena.
Coupling effect of plastic deformation and surface roughness on friction behaviors of rough line contact for ground metal surfaces

Abstract:Grinding is a pervasive technique employed in manufacturing and machining fields. Metal surfaces after grinding processing exhibit striated surface topography, which can be simplified into a two-dimensional plane strain friction problem, distinct from conventional three-dimensional rough surface friction models. In this paper, a novel approach that integrates dimensional analysis and finite element analysis is proposed to systematically investigate the coupled effect of plastic deformation and surface roughness on the frictional behavior of ground metal surfaces in rough line contact. First, the surface morphology is characterized through experimental surface observation. Subsequently, dimensional analysis was applied to identify the crucial parameters influencing frictional behavior. The actual surface topography was then imported into a numerical model, utilizing the finite element method, to comprehensively investigate the combined effects of plastic deformation and surface roughness on the frictional behavior of ground surfaces. The results show that higher plasticity and a lower local friction coefficient result in earlier sliding initiation. Following the comprehensive onset of sliding across the interface, the steady-state friction coefficient is still influenced by both the local friction coefficient and the degree of plasticity. The friction behaviors are highly sensitive to the interaction between surface roughness and the level of plasticity, and higher plasticity and lower roughness contribute to a reduced friction coefficient. This study contributes to the understanding of the friction behavior of ground metal surfaces, offering insights for the development of novel approaches to reduce friction coefficients.

Abstract:Sliding machine elements made of plastics co-operate mostly with metals. The friction of these materials engages several processes like mechanical and adhesion interactions, tribo-chemical and tribo-electrical reactions etc. In this paper, processes involved with the tribological wear of polymer materials under conditions of dry friction were discussed. The focus was on mechanical and adhesion reactions between co-operating surfaces. The role of the surface roughness of the metallic element on the creation of the polymer film and on the wear of the polymer material was stressed. Fundamental modes of wear characteristic for polymer materials were described. These include adhesion wear, abrasive wear, fatigue wear, thermal and chemical wear, asperities melting, creep wear, and fretting. A wear mechanism for different polymer materials (including composites) was presented. The mechanism includes chemical activity of the mating metals, the role of fillers in the transfer of load and creation of the polymer film. A mechanism accounting for additional heating of the material as a result of fluctuating friction force loading of the sliding metal/polymer pair and additional heating due to internal friction of the polymer materials was also presented.

Abstract:Friction plots of polymers sliding on smooth metal surfaces are generally characterized by two regions of distinct dependency on the normal load, with low sensitivity at low stress levels followed by a sharp change in the rate of decrease of friction with increasing pressure at levels above the plastic flow limit of the polymer. A simplified model is proposed to describe this behavior which accounts for the effect of the normal load on the growth of the real contact area and the shear stress at the interface between the polymer and the mating surface. The model has a wide generality when expressed in terms of dimensionless variables, allowing to rationalize the friction behavior of different polymers within a single framework.
Study on friction behavior of wear-resistant PA-6 alloy

Abstract:The friction behaviors of PA-6, PE and PA-6/PE alloy have been tested by using MHK -500 and SRV wear experiment machines. It has been shown that PA-6/PE alloy show better friction performances than pure PA-6, such as low friction coefficient and good friction stability. Friction surface morphologies have also been observed in our experiment. In order to study the friction mechanism of PA-6/PE alloy, DSC and PGC are used to analyse the composition of the material on the PA-6/PE alloy friction surface and its counterface.

Abstract:The purpose of the paper is to investigate the effect of surface modification on the friction characteristics of sliding bearings. This paper reviews the previous studies on the influences of surface texture, coating materials and lubricant additives on the performance of the sliding bearings. Through the theoretical models and simulation experiments between different friction couple, the researchers found that under the condition of fluid lubrication, the surface modification design can significantly improve the friction characteristics of the surface of the friction couple, which has attracted the wide attention of researchers. The development status and latest progress in improving the surface properties of friction couple are introduced mainly from the geometrical characteristics of surface texture, the matrix of surface coating materials and the types of lubricating additives. Among them, the geometric features of texture mainly include texture shape, scale, parameters, position and combination form. The types of coating material substrates mainly include iron-based alloys and aluminum-based alloys. Lubricating oil additives mainly include ionic liquids and nanoparticles. Finally, the existing problems and future development directions of surface modification are pointed out.

Abstract:This paper intruduces the development of a new type frictional material with ringopening polymerized phenolic resin as a matrix and carbon fiber as a reinforcement.Its properties were studied.Experiment results have shown that the carbon fiber frictional material has high frictional coefficients,and low wear rates and especially it has an excellent heat resistance.It is a new type frictional material which has a wide prospect of application.
