Abstract:Non-resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (NRIXS) is a new technique for atomic and molecular physics that allows one to measure the electronic structures and dynamic parameters of the ground and excited states of atoms and molecules in momentum space. There is a clearly understood physical picture of NRIXS, which reveals its remarkable advantages of satisfying the first Born approximation and being able to excite dipole-forbidden transitions. Various physical properties of atoms and molecules, such as their elastic and inelastic squared form factors, optical oscillator strengths, and Compton profiles, can be explored using NRIXS under different experimental conditions. In this paper, we review newly developed experimental methods for NRIXS, together with its characteristics and various applications, with emphasis on the new insights into excitation mechanism and other new information revealed by this technique. The intrinsic connections and differences between NRIXS and fast electron impact spectroscopy are elucidated. Future applications of this method to atomic and molecular physics are also described.

Abstract:Photon correlation spectroscopy probing fluctuations in scattered or fluorescent intensity to study particle dynamics in fluids is by now well established in the visible light regime. With the advent of high-brilliance synchrotron radiation sources, correlation spectroscopy utilizing scattered radiation has recently been extended to the x-ray wavelength regime by using spatially coherent x-rays to study the time fluctuations of the corresponding speckle patterns. In this presentation, we report the development of a new technique, x-ray fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (XFCS) for elucidating the dynamics of particles. This technique does not require coherent beams but relies on intense microfocused x-ray beams. Further, it is element specific. As a demonstration of this method, the dynamics of gold colloidal particles and aggregates undergoing diffusion and sedimentation in water was studied by measuring the time autocorrelation of the gold fluorescence intensity from a small illuminated volume. The values of the translational diffusion constants and sedimentation velocities obtained are in excellent agreement with theoretical estimates and other measurements. Further potential applications of the technique are discussed.
Exploring Quantum Materials with Resonant Inelastic X-Ray Scattering

Abstract:Understanding quantum materials -- solids in which quantum-mechanical interactions among constituent electrons yield a great variety of novel emergent phenomena -- is a forefront challenge in modern condensed matter physics. This goal has driven the invention and refinement of several experimental methods, which can spectroscopically determine the elementary excitations and correlation functions that determine material properties. This Perspectives article focuses on the future experimental and theoretical trends of resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS), which is a remarkably versatile and rapidly growing technique for probing different charge, lattice, spin, and orbital excitations in quantum materials. We provide a forward-looking introduction to RIXS and outline how this technique is poised to deepen our insight into the nature of quantum materials and their emergent electronic phenomena.

Abstract:Non-resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (NRIXS) is a powerful tool to reveal the electronic structures of matter while it has a very low cross section. Recently we have extended the NRIXS to atomic and molecular physics with a low-density target. The electronic structures of the ground/excited states and the photoabsorption cross sections of some atoms and molecules have been determined by NRIXS and the newly-developed dipole (γ,γ) method.

Abstract:We present a time-dependent Schrödinger equation (TDSE) approach within a non-relativistic quantum electrodynamics (QED) framework to investigate resonant x-ray scattering under intense x-ray pulses. This method enables us to explore how coherent x-ray electron dynamics affect scattering signals from Ne$^+$. We account for both resonant fluorescence and elastic scattering channels, while also considering competing photoionization and inner-shell decay processes. By computing the angular distribution and energy spectrum of scattered photons, we uncover the interference effects between elastic scattering and resonant fluorescence pathways. Notably, our results reveal a small asymmetry in the energy spectrum as a result of this interference. We discuss the experimental potential for detecting signatures of interference. Our findings demonstrate that the x-ray Rabi dynamics can be used to control scattering responses and offer new insights into interference mechanisms and scattering efficiency in high-intensity x-ray regimes.

Abstract:Results on the application of the resonant detector (RD) for epithermal neutron scattering in an unexplored kinematical region are presented. The RD is based on resonance radiative neutron capture for energy analysis of the scattered neutrons in an inverse geometry time of flight spectrometer. Application of the RD to detection of epithermal neutrons at very low scattering angles allows access to an unexplored scattering kinematical region, the High-energy Inelastic Neutron Scattering (HINS) region, of low wave vector (3Å−1<q<10Å−1) and high energy transfers (0.1eV<ω<10eV). Results of HINS measurements from polycrystalline ice are presented.

Abstract:A spectrometer for resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) is proposed where imaging and dispersion actions in two orthogonal planes are combined to deliver full two-dimensional map of RIXS intensity in one shot with parallel detection in incoming hvin and outgoing hvout photon energies. Preliminary ray-tracing simulations with a typical undulator beamline demonstrate a resolving power well above 11000 in both hvin and hvout near a photon energy of 930 eV, with a vast potential for improvement. Combining such a spectrometer - nicknamed hv2 - with an XFEL source allows efficient time-resolved RIXS experiments.

Abstract:Recent developments in X-ray spectroscopy in the last decade are reviewed. A specific emphasis is placed oil displaying the strong natural connection between X-ray spectroscopy and materials science. Brief explanations of several X-ray spectroscopic methods are given. X-ray spectroscopic instruments such as table-top X-ray sources are discussed in detail, whereas those employing synchrotron and other sources are briefly addressed. The spectroscopic methods and results from materials investigations are reviewed according to their positions in a 3D parameter space of time, length, and energy. New experimental measurements on atoms, molecules, nanomaterials, and bulk materials that include insulators, semiconductors, metals and magnetic materials using both static and time-resolved methods are reviewed.[GRAPHICS]A typical table-top experimental setup to probe a sample using tin optical pump (green color beam) - X-ray probe (purple color beam) technique. The X-ray Pulses are produced by femtosecond optical pulses. Two exemplary data are displayed: One is direct imaging of plasmas generated from laser evaporation of a solid target (Imaging data) and the other is an X-ray absorption spectrum of a nickel sample (USEXAS data). Abstract:Young's archetypal double-slit experiment forms the basis for modern diffraction techniques: The elastic scattering of waves yields an interference pattern that captures the real-space structure. Here, we report on an inelastic incarnation of Young's experiment and demonstrate that resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) measures interference patterns, which reveal the symmetry and character of electronic excited states in the same way as elastic scattering does for the ground state. A prototypical example is provided by the quasi-molecular electronic structure of insulating Ba3CeIr2O9 with structural Ir dimers and strong spin-orbit coupling. The double "slits" in this resonant experiment are the highly localized core levels of the two Ir atoms within a dimer. The clear double-slit-type sinusoidal interference patterns that we observe allow us to characterize the electronic excitations, demonstrating the power of RIXS interferometry to unravel the electronic structure of solids containing, e.g., dimers, trimers, ladders, or other superstructures.

In this Essay, the status of the methodology development at the beamline is discussed and applications are reviewed.

Abstract:Small angle scattering methodologies have been evolving at fast pace over the past few decades due to the ever-increasing demands for more details on the complex nanostructures of multiphase and multicomponent soft materials like polymer assemblies and biomaterials. Currently, element-specific and contrast variation techniques such as resonant (elastic) soft/tender x-ray scattering, anomalous small angle x-ray scattering, and contrast-matching small angle neutron scattering, or combinations of above are routinely used to extract the chemical composition and spatial arrangement of constituent elements at multiple length scales and examine electronic ordering phenomena. Here we present some recent advances in selectively characterizing structural architectures of complex soft materials, which often contain multi-components with a wide range of length scales and multiple functionalities, where novel resonant scattering approaches have been demonstrated to decipher a higher level of structural complexity that correlates to functionality. With the advancement of machine learning and artificial intelligence assisted correlative analysis, high-throughput and autonomous experiments would open a new paradigm of material research. Further development of resonant x-ray scattering instrumentation with crossplatform sample environments will enable multimodal in situ/operando characterization of the system dynamics with much improved spatial and temporal resolution.
A compact approach to higher-resolution resonant inelastic X-ray scattering detection using photoelectrons

Abstract:The detection of inelastically scattered soft X-rays with high energy resolution usually requires large grating spectrometers. Recently, photoelectron spectrometry for analysis of X-rays (PAX) has been rediscovered for modern spectroscopy experiments at synchrotron light sources. By converting scattered photons to electrons and using an electron energy analyser, the energy resolution for resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) becomes decoupled from the X-ray spot size and instrument length. In this work, we develop PAX towards high energy resolution using a modern photoemission spectroscopy setup studying Ba 2 Cu 3 O 4 Cl 2 at the Cu L 3 edge. We measure a momentum transfer range of 24% of the first Brillouin zone simultaneously. Our results hint at the observation of a magnon excitation below 100 meV energy transfer and show intensity variations related to the dispersion of dd-excitations. With dedicated setups, PAX can complement the best and largest RIXS instruments, while at the same time opening new opportunities to acquire RIXS at a range of momentum transfers simultaneously and combine it with angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy in a single instrument.

Resonant Soft X-ray Scattering for Polymer Materials

Abstract:Resonant Soft X-ray Scattering (RSoXS) was developed over the last a few years, and the first dedicated resonant soft X-ray scattering beamline for soft materials was constructed at the Advanced Light Source, LBNL. RSoXS combines soft X-ray spectroscopy with X-ray scattering and thus offers statistical information for 3D chemical morphology over a large length scale range from nanometers to micrometers. Using RSoXS to characterize multi length scale soft materials with heterogeneous chemical structures, we have demonstrated that soft X-ray scattering is a unique complementary technique to conventional hard X-ray and neutron scattering. Its unique chemical sensitivity, large accessible size scale, molecular bond orientation sensitivity with polarized X-rays, and high coherence have shown great potential for chemically specific structural characterization for many classes of materials. Inelastic X-Ray Scattering Study on the Single Excitations of Helium

Abstract:The inelastic x-ray scattering technique has been used to study the excitation mechanism of atomic helium in this work. The squares of the form factor for the single excitations of 1s2 → 1snl (n ⩽ 6) of helium have been determined by the high resolution (70 meV) inelastic x-ray scattering. The present squares of the form factor measured by inelastic x-ray scattering provide an independent cross-check to the ones measured by high-energy electron energy loss spectroscopy. It is found that the squares of the form factor for the single excitations of 1s2 → 1snl (n ⩽ 6) of helium measured by inelastic x-ray scattering are in excellent agreement with the ones measured by high-energy electron energy loss spectroscopy, which confirms the quality of these two experimental methods. The excellent agreement of the present measurements with the theoretical calculations also gives a rigorous test of the theoretical method. This work demonstrates that inelastic x-ray scattering is a powerful tool to study the excitation mechanism in atomic or molecular systems at the third-generation synchrotron radiation light source.
Investigating meV-scale Equilibrium Atomic Dynamics with X-Rays: focus on disordered materials

Abstract:This paper reviews non-resonant meV-resolved inelastic x-ray scattering (IXS) as a complementary method to inelastic neutron scattering (INS). Two aspects of IXS that are notable in this context are (1) that IXS allows straightforward measurements of phonons in small (sub-mm, and even $\sim 0.01$ mm) samples with $\sim 1$ meV resolution and excellent Q resolution and (2) that IXS avoids the kinematic constraints of INS. The first allows both new geometries (thin films, diamond anvil cells) and easy access to new materials, while the second allows high quality data on disordered materials, such as scans with sub-meV resolution to arbitrarily high energy transfer become possible , even at momentum transfers as small as 1/nm. The review briefly discusses the spectrometers and compares the practical forms for the dynamic structure factor for crystals, glasses and liquids. This is followed by a longer review of work on liquids and then shorter discussion of work on glasses, crystals, and discussion of specific geometries. This paper complements the longer introduction/review of IXS at <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1504.01098" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1504.01098">arXiv:1504.01098</a> .

Abstract:For over a century, x-ray scattering has been the most powerful tool for determining the equilibrium structure of crystalline materials. Deviations from perfect periodicity, for example due to thermal motion of the atoms, reduces the intensity of the Bragg peaks as well as produces structure in the diffuse scattering background. Analysis of the thermal diffuse scattering (TDS) had been used to determine interatomic force constants and phonon dispersion in relatively simple cases before inelastic neutron scattering became the preferred technique to study lattice dynamics. With the advent of intense synchrotron x-ray sources, there was a renewed interest in TDS for measuring phonon dispersion. The relatively short x-ray pulses emanating from these sources also enables the measurement of phonon dynamics in the time domain. Prior experiments on nonequilibrium phonons were either limited by time-resolution and/or to relatively long wavelength excitations. Here we present the first images of nonequilibrium phonons throughout the Brillouin zone in photoexcited III-V semiconductors, indium-phosphide and indium-antimonide, using picosecond time-resolved diffuse scattering. In each case, we find that the lattice remain out of equilibrium for several hundred picoseconds up to nanoseconds after laser excitation. The non-equilibrium population is dominated by transverse acoustic phonons which in InP are directed along high-symmetry directions. The results have wide implications for the detailed study of electron-phonon and phonon-phonon coupling in solids.

An endstation for resonant inelastic X-ray scattering studies of solid and liquid samples

Abstract:A novel experimental setup is presented for resonant inelastic X-ray scattering investigations of solid and liquid samples in the soft X-ray region for studying the complex electronic configuration of (bio)chemical systems. The uniqueness of the apparatus is its high flexibility combined with optimal energy resolution and energy range ratio. The apparatus enables investigation of chemical analyses, which reflects the chemical imprints. The endstation is composed of a main sample chamber, a sample holder for either solid or liquid jet delivery system, and a soft X-ray grating spectrometer for 210-1250 eV with a resolving power of ∼1000. It combines for the first time liquid jet technology with a soft X-ray spectrometer based on the variable line spacing principle. This setup was commissioned at the soft X-ray beamline P04 at PETRA III of the Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron in Hamburg which is currently the most brilliant storage-ring-based X-ray radiation source in the world. The first results of liquid and solid samples show that this setup allows the detection of photons across an energy range of ∼300 eV. This covers simultaneously the emission lines of life-important elements like carbon, nitrogen and oxygen in a shot-based procedure.

After a brief review of different methods and possibilities obtained with synchrotron radiation, some observations on vibration modes, especially on coupled piezo-electric components in quartz AT and BT resonators, are reported.
