Abstract:Numerous advances have been made in X-ray technology in recent years. X-ray imaging plays an important role in the nondestructive exploration of the internal structures of objects. However, the contrast of X-ray absorption images remains low, especially for materials with low atomic numbers, such as biological samples. X-ray phase-contrast images have an intrinsically higher contrast than absorption images. In this review, the principles, milestones, and recent progress of X-ray phase-contrast imaging methods are demonstrated. In addition, prospective applications are presented.

Abstract:X-ray imaging is a low-cost, powerful technology that has been extensively used in medical diagnosis and industrial nondestructive inspection. The ability of X-rays to penetrate through the body presents great advances for noninvasive imaging of its internal structure. In particular, the technological importance of X-ray imaging has led to the rapid development of high-performance X-ray detectors and the associated imaging applications. Here, we present an overview of the recent development of X-ray imaging-related technologies since the discovery of X-rays in the 1890s and discuss the fundamental mechanism of diverse X-ray imaging instruments, as well as their advantages and disadvantages on X-ray imaging performance. We also highlight various applications of advanced X-ray imaging in a diversity of fields. We further discuss future research directions and challenges in developing advanced next-generation materials that are crucial to the fabrication of flexible, low-dose, high-resolution X-ray imaging detectors.

Abstract:The principle and progresses in X-ray 3D imaging using Synchrot ron Ra diation (SR) are introduced in this paper. Two types of X-ray 3D imaging techni ques, X-ray holograply and CT, and the theory and technology in high resolution 3D imaging with the combination of these two techniques-HCT, are described in detail. The digital methods for elimination the “twin image” noise from in-li ne holography are introduced, and the factors that limit the resolution are disc ussed. Some results of X-ray 3D HCT experiment with biological samples obtained in National Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory are shown.

Abstract:X-ray holography is widely used in material, biology, and industry fields due to its potential to measure the microstructure and dynamic change of objects. In this review, the principle of X-ray holography and the development of this technology in different application fields are systematically summarized and discussed. Through analyzing the advancement of X-ray sources and recording medium, the research and development direction of X-ray holography are prospected and the overview on current strategies of novel X-ray holography is presented. It is proved that X-ray holography, as a powerful nondestructive measurement method, can be applied to a wide range of objects.

Abstract:Imaging of biological materials and cells with X-ray microscopy, which has high application potential, can break the diffraction limit barrier of traditional optical microscopy and exceed the transmission depth of electron microscopy. In this study, we introduce the examples of X-ray microscopy technology, such as transmission X-ray microscopy (TXM), small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS), coherent X-ray diffraction imaging (CDI/CXDI), and X-ray holography. In addition, we demonstrate the combination of different technologies to achieve optimized imaging results such as the combination of STXM with CDI, the combination of scanning SAXS with ptychography, and the combination of X-ray microscopy with fluorescence imaging. Relevant improvements in rapid positioning, algorithms, X-ray sources, and sample preparation are also discussed.

Abstract:Some experimental results and the principle of X-ray diffraction enhanced phase contrast imaging are presented. It demonstrates that X-ray diffraction enhanced phase contrast imaging is an approach with higher ratio of signal-to-noise than that of traditional X-ray radiography, the resolution can be up to 10 μm. It's a promising tool for the applications in researches on clinical, medicine and material sciences.

Abstract:Recent development of the medical imaging is the changing from macro-imaging to the micro-imaging by improving the spatial resolution and the contrast resolution of the soft tissues. Cells and microstructure of μm magnitude can be visualized in vivo non-invasively and dynamically by medical micro-imaging technique. Medical micro-imaging is capable of making the pathological diagnosis more early and the treatment of the leision more precisely by γ knife. Because the phase contrast resolution of X ray in soft tissues is about one thousand times higher than that of the absorption X ray method, so the phase contrast imaging is becoming the hot spot of the medical imaging. In this paper, the synchrotron X ray source at BSRF was used to investigate the microstructure of lung, liver and kidney by means of the DEI phase contrast micro-imaging method. Results indicated that the microstructures of lung alveoli, renal tubulous, liver lobules etc, which could not be seen by conventional absorption X ray method but could be revealed clearly by phase contrast imaging method. The spatial resolution reached about 20 μm. It is concluded that the medical phase contrast micro-CT is a new developing technique of the medical imaging in the near future.

Abstract:Terahertz radiation can penetrate nonmetallic materials and nonpolar materials such as plastics,papers and cloth,and has lower photon energy than X-ray.Computed Tomography(CT) can obtain internal structure distribution information of a sample and reconstruct 3D images.THz CT has drawn much attention all over the world.In the paper,the research focuses and concrete conditions of THz CT in these years have been highlighted,and the problems and development trends have also been analyzed.The paper can provide technical reference for THz CT in China.

Abstract:In recent years, China's rapid development of high-end equipment manufacturing industry in the high-speed railway, aircraft, carrier rock et, etc. brings the growing requirements of the high quality assurance of the pro duct. The accelerator based high-energy X-ray Industrial CT has the advantages of strong pen etrating power, high sensitivity defect detection and quantitative measurement with im age visualization, can meet the needs of the large complicated structure inspection demands. This paper introduces the current research and development status of high ener y industrial CT system in China. Research achievements by the Tsinghua Univ ersity and the Granpect company are discussed, including the ICT system de sign, highpower LINAC accelerator X-ray source and high detection efficiency detecto r development, fast and accurate reconstruction algorithms research, etc. This paper also introduces the particularized NDT applications from dozens of industrial CT systems made by Granpect in China, including welding str ucture nondestructive testing, assembly quality inspection, reverse engineering, sc entific research and other applications. Then the future development and application of h igh energy industrial CT is prospected.

Abstract:A new method for taking X-ray image holograms with tens nanometer resolution is proposed. It employs two micro-zone-plates, one is for imaging and the other is for producing the reference. The holograms can be recorded in digital form by a charge-coupled device (CCD) camera. The device can also be used as an X-ray interferometer, called double-zone-plate X-ray interferometer.

Abstract:In this contribution, we will show examples of the strength of the combination of X-ray (micro-) diffraction, X-ray imaging and Computed Tomography (CT) results on solid objects.New developments -especially in detector technology -allow integration of these techniques on one laboratory X-ray diffraction system.By combining phase analysis with density and microstructure information a complete picture of the sample is obtained.Results can be correlated with macroscopic material properties.Examples from building materials, natural objects and pharmaceutical tablets are shown.

Abstract:With the increasing demand for sustainable energy, advanced characterization methods are becoming more and more important in the field of energy materials research. With the help of X-ray imaging technology, we can obtain the morphology, structure and stress change information of energy materials in real time from two-dimensional and three-dimensional perspectives. In addition, with the help of high penetration X-ray and high brightness synchrotron radiation source, in-situ experiments are designed to obtain the qualitative and quantitative change information of samples during the charge and discharge process. In this paper, X-ray imaging technology based on synchrotron and its related applications are reviewed. The applications of several main X-ray imaging technologies in the field of energy materials, including X-ray projection imaging, transmission X-ray microscopy, scanning transmission X-ray microscopy, X-ray fluorescence microscopy and coherent diffraction imaging, are discussed. The application prospects and development directions of X-ray imaging in the future are prospected.

Abstract:A high-resolution three-dimensional (3D) imaging technology has been developed, which is a combination of x-ray holography and computerized tomography (CT) technology called holographic computerized tomography (HCT). The theory and experimental techniques on biological specimens with the use of synchrotron radiation are discussed. Projections at different angles are reconstructed with the numerical method of in-line holography, and then the reconstructed data with a higher lateral resolution are used to restore the 3D image by the CT technique. With this method, the degradation caused by the diffraction of x rays is canceled, and 3D images with high resolution of micrometer magnitude in both the lateral and the longitudinal directions are obtained.
Preliminary Research on Laser Plasma Accelerator based Inverse Compton Scattering X-ray Imaging

Abstract:Industrial CT system offers high precision non-destructive detection and capturing of the geometry of objects, especially for complex objects with hidden or difficult accessible surfaces. Modern micro focus X-ray CT system is used for high precision dimensional metrology. However, due to the energy and power limitations of the micro focus X-ray source, the micro-CT system currently performs highprecision metrology only for small objects of low-density materials. This paper will introduce the advantages of 3D CT imaging technology for accurate imaging complex structures inside objects, analyze the research and development trend of highprecision CT, and introduce the research progress of Tsinghua University in improving industrial CT resolution. Furthermore, preliminary research on laser plasma accelerator based inverse Compton scattering X-ray Imaging will be introduced. The novel micro CT system based on inverse Compton scattering radiation have the advantage of both high energy as well as small focal size. The design of micro-focus high-energy industrial CT based on new laser driven radiation source and its application prospects in high precision dimensional metrology of industrial components will be described.

Abstract:With the development of THz imaging technique,there have been great demands for the improvement of THz imaging performances such as imaging resolution,imaging speed,image dimension,etc.To eliminate the influence of diffraction on imaging results and to improve the performance of THz imaging system,a lot of researchers have turned their attentions to THz digital holography.Firstly,some fundamental theories for THz digital holography are briefly introduced.Then a comprehensive description on the advances in the domestic and international research of THz digital holography is povided.These investigations exhibit that THz digital holography has great potentials to improve the imaging resolution and extend image dimension,etc.Moreover,THz digital holography has the capability of real-time imaging.Those characterizations make THz digital holography a promising technique which has an exciting application and development prospect.

Abstract:X-ray imaging at hight energies has been used for many years in many fields. Conventional X-ray imaging is based on the different absorption within a sample. It\u0027s difficult to distinguish different tissues of a biological sample because of their small difference in absorption. In this paper, we use the diffraction enhanced imaging(DEI)method. We took images of absorption, extinction,scattering and refractivity. In the end, we presented pictures of high resolution with all these information combined.

Abstract:Objective To study the methodology of X-ray phase contrast imaging using synchrotron radiation, and evaluate the quality of phase contrast images. Methods Several experiments to obtain phase contrast images and absorption contrast images of various biological samples were conducted in Beijing Synchrotron Radiation Facility (BSRF), and then these images were interpreted to find out the difference between the two kinds of imaging methods. Results Satisfactory phase contrast images of these various samples were obtained, and the quality of these images was superior to that obtained with absorption contrast imaging. The phase contrast formation is based on the phenomenon of fresnel diffraction which transforms phase shifts into intensity variations upon a simple act of free-space propagation, so it requires highly coherent X-rays and appropriate distance between sample and detector. This method of imaging is very useful in imaging of low-absorption objects or objects with little absorption variation, and its resolution is far higher than that of the conventional X-ray imaging. The photographs obtained showed very fine inner microstructure of the biological samples, and the smallest microstructure to be distinguished is within 30-40 μm. There is no doubt that phase contrast imaging has a practical applicability in medicine. Moreover, it improves greatly the efficiency and the resolution of the existing X-ray diagnostic techniques. Conclusions X-ray phase contrast imaging can be performed with synchrotron radiation source and has some advantages over the conventional absorption contrast imaging. ;
