Abstract:The precipitated phase characteristic,microstructural evolution,mechanical properties and oxidation/corrosion resistance of austenitic heat-resistance steel HR3C used for ultra-supercritical boiler were introduced.The alloy is strengthened by Z-phase (NbCrN),MX phase with carbon and nitrogen and M23C6,which has excellent mechanical properties.The precipitation of M23C6 phase and a few harmful phases (such as σ-phase and G-phase) from the HR3C alloy during the long term service and heat exposure are harmful to the mechanical properties.The alloy presents excellent oxidation resistance and corrosion resistance.The oxidation resistance of the alloy is better than that of Super304H and TP347HFG alloys,and the flue gas corrosion resistance is better than that of TP347HFG alloy.At last,the optimization and development direction of the alloys are anticipated.

Abstract:In this paper, four typical austenitic heat-resistant steels (TP304H steel, TP347H steel, Super304H steel and HR3C steel) are taken as examples to review the research progress of high-temperature oxidation of austenitic stainless steel for ultra-supercritical unit boilers, and the mechanism and protective measures of high-temperature oxidation of austenitic stainless steel are discussed, so as to provide references for material improvement and safe use of unit boilers.

Abstract:This paper presents an investigation of the flow and heat transfer characteristics of the water wall tube of an ultra-supercritical circulating fluidized bed (CFB) boiler for a better boiler design. The operating pressure ranges from 10.5 to 32 MPa. The six-headed inner rifled tube used in the test has a diameter and wall thickness of 35 mm and 5.67 mm, respectively. Results show that the vapor quality during heat-transfer deterioration (vapor quality > 0.8) increases with increased mass flux or decreased heat flux in the subcritical pressure regions. The effects of the pressure and heat flux on the inner-wall temperature in the supercritical pressure region are remarkable in the high-enthalpy region (enthalpy > 2400 kJ kg(-1)). The effects of the heat flux and pressure on frictional pressure drop are more dominant than mass flux in both the subcritical and supercritical pressure regions. The optimized tube is found to exhibit good performance under ultra-supercritical parameters.

Abstract:The ultra supercritical boiler technology with double reheat can significantly increase the efficiency of a Rankine cycle power plant, and reduce fuel consumption for a given output. Recently China is developing 1000MW ultra supercritical boiler with double reheat which is arranged in tower type and the steam parameters are 350bar, 605℃/613℃/613℃. Thermal-hydraulic analysis is the key factors for the design and operation of ultra supercritical boiler with double reheat. According to the boiler structure and furnace-sided heat flux, the water wall of an ultra supercritical tower boiler with double reheat is treated in this paper as a flow network system consisting of series-parallel loops, pressure grids and connecting tubes. Based on the mass, momentum and energy conservations and some supplementary equations, a mathematical model is developed. Pressure drop, mass flux distribution, outlet vapor temperatures and metal temperatures data in the water wall at BMCR (boiler maximum continuous rating), 75% THA (turbine heat acceptance) and 30% THA load are obtained by iteratively solving the mathematical model. The results show that the water wall in the ultra supercritical boiler can operate safely.

Abstract:Boiler slagging and high-temperature corrosion were the most severe problems that coal-fired boilers are facing due to the widespread employment of low-NO x burners with staged combustion system . In this study, sample characterization, numerical simulation and field adjustments were used to consider the effects of coal quality and boiler air distribution on boiler slagging and high-temperature corrosion of a 1000 MW ultra supercritical double tangentially fired boiler . Characterization results verified that alkali metals compounds were responsible for boiler slagging and the boiler was suffering sulfide type corrosion. To predict the distribution of H 2 S in boiler, an optimized H 2 S reaction mechanism was introduced into numerical simulation, and the rear wall was considered to have the greatest risk of high-temperature corrosion. After determining the negative correlation between O 2 and the reducing atmosphere in the boiler, three air distribution adjustment schemes were proposed and field adjustment experiments were conducted. The results showed that both the increasing of the total air volume and optimizing secondary air distribution performed a positive influence on mitigating reducing atmosphere, and the water-cooled wall peak temperature also decreased to safety limits, which provided theoretical and operational guidance for the prevention of slagging and high-temperature corrosion in boilers.

Abstract:Oxidation behavior of Super304H and HR3C steel in high temperature steam from an ultra-supercritical coal-fired boiler was investigated in this paper. The results showed that the steam oxidized surface of Super304H ware composed of Fe2O3, Cr2O3 and FeCr2O4, the oxide scale had a thickness of 50-70 m. In addition, the steam oxidized surface of HR3C ware composed of Fe2O3, the oxide scale was about 20m in thickness and contained few pitting. The oxidation product layer of the two samples could be divided into two layers, including outer layer enriched O element and Fe element, and inner layer enriched O element and Cr element. Furthermore, oxide scale spalling was observed on the surface of Super304H sample.

Abstract:The excellent properties of heat resistant Cr-Mo ferritic steels are one of the key technical requirements for petrochemical engineering and fossil-fired power plants.With regard to the difference in chromium concentration of 2wt%Cr,9wt%Cr,12wt%Cr,several typical heat resistant Cr-Mo ferritic steels and the recent research progresses in some significant alloy additions are introduced to analyze and summarize the adjustment tendency of chemical composition design.Under the appropriate composition design and processing methods,the creep-resistance can be enhanced greatly by controlling the desity,morphology and size of MX and M23X6 precipitation phases.In a word,an essential guide for further development and investigation of this kind of steels is presented in this paper.

Abstract:The efficiency of conventional fossil power plants is a strong function of the steam temperature and pressure. Research to increase both has been pursued worldwide, since the energy crisis in the 1970s. The need to reduce CO2 emission has recently provided an additional incentive to increase efficiency. The main enabling technology in achieving the above goals has been the development of stronger high-temperature materials. Extensive R&D programs have resulted in numerous high strength alloys for heavy section piping, and tubing needed to build boilers. The study reported here is aimed at identifying, evaluating and qualifying the materials needed for the construction of the critical components of coal-fired boilers capable of operating with 760°C (1400°F)/35MPa (5000psi) steam. The economic viability of such a plant has been explored. Candidate alloys applicable to various ranges of temperature have been identified. Stress rupture tests have been completed on the base metal and on welds to a number of alloys. Steamside oxidation tests in an autoclave at 650 (1200°F) and 800°C (1475°F) have been completed. Fireside corrosion tests have been conducted under conditions simulating those of waterwalls and superheater/reheater tubes. Weldability and fabricability of the alloys have been investigated. The capability of various overlay coatings and diffusion coatings have been examined. This paper provides a status report on the progress achieved to date on this project.

Abstract:Nowadays, heavy peak-shaving task requires ultra-supercritical boilers having fast and flexible response characteristic. Wide operating loads and quick load-change mode ask for better flow and heat transfer characteristics of the water wall. Under the above backgrounds, heat transfer to water flowing upward in an inclined smooth bare tube was experimentally investigated tinder the operating conditions of an ultra-supercritical boiler. The experimental results show that the metal temperature of the tested water wall tube is safe from 30% to 90% BMCR, The heat transfer coefficient of single-phase water at bottom side is 1-2 times bigger than that at the top. The Fr number put forward by Kefer et al. can give a convincing prediction on the effect of flow stratification in the tested pressure range 12-18 MPa. The calculated steam quality difference with the Kefer et al. correlation is an average-value prediction on axial length of the transitional region. At supercritical pressures, four widely used heat transfer correlations are evaluated with the experimental data. The comparison results demonstrate that Swenson et al. correlation gives the best prediction on heat transfer. The effect of flow stratification is evaluated by the modified correlation of Petukhov and Popov, which demonstrates that the effect of flow stratification can be neglected in the high enthalpy region. Abstract:As a recently developed elevated temperature material, Super304H austenitic stainless steel has been widely used in ultra supercritical fossil fired boiler to fabricate superheater and reheater tubes because of its superior elevated temperature strength, good oxidation resistance and steam corrosion resistance. But its high carbon content and high working temperature increase greatly its intergranular corrosion susceptibility and it seems that the composition design and delivery state heat-treatment of this material have not taken this danger into sufficient consideration. A 100MW ultra supercritical fossil fired boiler being installed in South China experienced a severe superheater leakage accident recently during a water pressure testing. After failure analysis, it was found that the superheater tubes, made of the novel Super304H stainless steel, were attacked by stress corrosion cracking which was induced by intergranular corrosion. The external reason for the intergranular corrosion was the bare laying of the tubes at seaside environment for a few months and the internal reason was the very high intergranular corrosion susceptibility of the tubes, which was caused by the very high carbon content in the material. It is therefore strongly recommended that more attention be paid to the intergranular corrosion resistance of this novel Super304H stainless steel. The chemical composition and delivery state heat-treatment technology for standard specification of Super304H stainless steel should be further investigated and optimized.

Abstract:On the basis of a 350MW supercritical pressure OTSC boiler, established the mathematical model for the circulation loop flow and grid pressure in a complex flow network system, and an iteration method was used to solve the nonlinear equations. The water wall flow distribution and temperature profile of the boiler were computed. The results show that the flow difference and heat difference are small in spiral tube water wall at BMCR, 75%BMCR load and 30%BMCR load. The metal temperatures are all in the range of allowable range, and the operation of boil is safe and reliable.

Abstract:A successful FCB (Fast Cut Back) can increase the security of the power plant and electric grid. On the other hand, in ultra-supercritical boilers, the superheaters suffer higher temperature, higher stress and severer oxidation on steam side. In this article, a numerical simulation on the temperature and stress of the superheaters, considering the double oxide scale on steam side, respectively in the process of 100%, 50% FCB (Fast Cut Back) and 100%, 75%, 50% load shedding, is conducted. The change law of the operation state is discussed. The results show that the higher the load before the operation condition change is, the greater range temperature and stress of the scale changes in, and the stress of the scale is affected by the steam temperature and steam pressure at the same time. The highest equivalent strain appears on the interface of the double scale, and its value is close to the spalling value. The oxide scale on the steam side of superheaters has high potential risk of spalling, great attention should be paid to them.

Abstract:The high temperature corrosion characteristic of Super304H, TP347H, and HR3C steel in an ultra-supercritical coal-fired boiler with service time of 17,973 h was investigated. The samples were analyzed by XRD, SEM, and EDS. The results showed that corrosion scales were composed and could be divided into three layers, including outer layer with composite reaction of alkalis and sulfate, middle layer with oxidation, and penetrated inner layer with oxidation and sulfidation. In addition, spalling of corrosion scales in the Super304H and TP347H samples was observed with the reasons of low Cr content and thermal expansion difference between different corrosion layers.

Abstract:Austenitic heat resistant steel Sanicro25 is a promising candidate for applications of super-heaters and re-heaters in 700 ℃ advanced ultra-supercritical power plants.This review briefly describes the chemical composition,microstructure and its evolution,mechanical properties,welding properties,steam oxidation and corrosion resistance of Sanicro25.The impact toughness of Sanicro25 decreases dramatically during long term thermal exposure,which may affect the safety of power plants.The future research directions on the performance improvement of the Sanicro25 are discussed.

Abstract:The advanced 700 degrees C ultra-supercritical (A-USC) power generation is the most important developing direction of power generation due to the highest efficiency and great potential for energy conservation. The heating surfaces will be more sensitive to metal temperature due to the narrow safety temperature allowance at higher steam parameter. The tube wall temperature is depended on heat transfer characteristics between flue gas and working fluid in tube. However, the tube wall temperature was usually calculated with decoupled method for predicting the energy flux between flue gas and working fluid. The accuracy of tube wall temperature by using this method is sufficient for 600 degrees C USC boiler design based on huge experience data of power plants. While for A-USC boiler, the accuracy of that was not sufficient due to the more sensitive of tube wall temperature on boiler safety operating. To address those issues, some perspectives are given: some experimental apparatus which combined combustion and heat transfer surfaces at 700 degrees C level of working fluid is needed to conduct heat transfer characteristics; the coupled heat transfer simulation method is essential for A-USC boiler design and operating; long-term testing verification of candidate surfaces is imperative for commercialization of A-USC technology. Analysis and Solution of High-temperature Corrosion for a 1000 MW Ultra-supercritical Boiler

Abstract:In order to control the high-temperature corrosion of water-wall, the pinning atmosphere was measured and the flake pieces were analyzed by SEM, EDS and XRD. The results show that the main reasons of water-wall high-temperature corrosion are cycle-by-cycle variation of reductive atmosphere. The area of most intense of reductive atmosphere and the concentration of H2 S is between OFA and SOFA. The possibility of the high-temperature corrosion of this area is great. Dual tangential circle wall firing can raise the concentration of H2 S at front-wall and back-wall. The outside corrosion product is Fe2 O3 , and on the contrary, the inside one is FeS. The alternation of the pinning atmospheres from oxidation atmosphere to reductive atmosphere which caused by load was a key factor of the high-temperature corrosion. In actual operation of boiler, optimizing air distribution mode and keeping the pinning atmosphere stabilization can reduce the rate of the high-temperature corrosion to low NOx combustion boilers.

Abstract:A double reheat ultra-supercritical boiler is an important development direction for high-parameter and large-capacity coal-fired power plants due to its high thermal efficiency and environmental value. China has developed a 1000 MW double reheat ultra-supercritical boiler with steam parameters of 35 MPa at 605°C/613°C/613°C. Reasonable water wall design is one of the keys to safe and reliable operation of the boiler. In order to examine the thermal-hydraulic characteristics of the double reheat ultra-supercritical boiler, the water wall system was equivalent to a flow network comprising series-parallel circuits, linking circuits and pressure nodes, and a calculation model was built on account of the conservation equations of energy, momentum and mass. Through the iterative solving of nonlinear equations, the prediction parameters of the water wall at boiler maximum continue rate(BMCR), 75% turbine heat-acceptance rate(THA) and 30% THA loads, including total pressure drops, flow distribution, outlet steam temperatures, fluid and metal temperatures were gotten. The results of calculation exhibit excellent thermal-hydraulic characteristics and substantiate the feasibility of the water wall design of the double reheat ultra-supercritical boiler.

Abstract:Heat-resistant ferritic stainless steels are widely used in many high-temperature applications such as power plants, automotive exhaust manifolds and solid oxide fuel cell interconnects due to their low price, low coefficient of thermal expansion, high thermal conductivity, high thermal fatigue resistance, high creep performance and excellent corrosion resistance. High-temperature strength, formability, high-temperature oxidation resistance and creep performance are the main evaluation criteria for the application. With the development of relevant industries, higher requirements are proposed for the performance of ferritic stainless steels. Therefore, the development of a new generation of heat-resistant ferritic stainless steel has received extensive attention. In this presentation, we summarized the research progress of heat-resistant ferritic stainless steels including high-temperature strength, formability, high-temperature oxidation resistance and creep performance. Meanwhile, some suggestions are given for alloy composition design and microstructure optimization. The future research direction of heat-resistant ferritic stainless steels also prospected.
