Abstract:Ordered cubic mesoporous silicas with large pore sizes (LP-SBA-16) have been successfully synthesized at high temperatures (180-220 degrees C) using polymer surfactant of F127 as a template. Compared with conventional SBA-16 with entrance size at 3.6 nm, LP-SBA-16 samples synthesized at high temperatures show large entrance sizes at 11.8-24.7 nm, confirmed by the pore size distribution and TEM images. The formation of these large pore sizes in the samples is attributed to the increase of surfactant hydrophobicity and the merging of mesopores at high temperatures. The results obtained from NMR and XRD techniques show that ordered mesostructure in LP-SBA-16 samples basically remained even if the surfactant (F127) is fully decomposed at high temperatures, indicating that F127 surfactant becomes unimportant when the mesoporous walls of silica have been condensed. Furthermore, we have compared the adsorption capacity myoglobin over conventional SBA-16 and LP-SBA-16 samples, and it is found that LP-SBA-16 samples exhibit much higher adsorption capacity than conventional SBA-16, which is potentially important for immobilization of enzymes on ordered mesoporous materials.

Abstract:Small pore (∼2.6 nm) thick-walled (7.7 nm) cage-like cubic mesoporous silica materials SBA-16 (ST-SBA-16) have been synthesized by using oligomeric surfactant Brij700 (polyoxyethylene (100) stearyl ether, C18H37EO100) with ultra-long hydrophilic chains. Their ordered mesostructures were characterized by X-ray diffraction patterns (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and nitrogen sorption analysis. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and infrared spectroscopy (IR) results show that ST-SBA-16 products have large numbers of silanol groups. The mesoscopic ordering of ST-SBA-16 can be greatly improved by the addition of suitable amount of co-surfactants, such as 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene (TMB). The effects of the synthesis parameters on the structure properties of ST-SBA-16 have also been systematically investigated. It is shown that the total pore volume can be enlarged from 0.31 to 0.51 cm3g−1 by the addition of TMB, pore diameter can be augmented from 2.6 to 4.0 nm by increasing the synthesis temperature from 5 to 40 °C and the surface area can be effectively tailored by changing the hydrothermal treatment time and the calcination temperature.

Abstract:A new procedure for the synthesis of mesoporous silica spheres with controlled particle size (9.0 similar to 17.6 mu m) and pore size (2.3 similar to 4.8 nm) was developed. It was based on the hydrothermal syntheses by mixing nonionic surfactant EP20PO30EO20 (P65) and TEOS under static acidic conditions. The size of spheres was controlled by adjusting the synthesis temperature, the synthesis time, and the amount of added KCl. The pore size of the spheres was controlled by adding the 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene (TMB) or changing the hydrothermal. temperature and characterized by nitrogen adsorption-desorption analysis, whereas the size of the spheres was analyzed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and further confirmed by the laser scattering particle size distribution analyzer. The bio-immobilization ability of such mesoporous silica spheres was characterized by protein adsorption analysis. Mesoporous silica spheres with the largest pore size (4.8 nm) among all materials under investigation showed the highest specific immobilization amount of lysozyme (192 mg/g), while the spheres with smaller pore size (<= 4.3 nm) have markedly low immobilization amount (<= 42 mg/g). These mesoporous silica spheres with diameter similar to 10 mu m in size may be readily used as a good substrate in high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC).

Abstract:Mesoporous silica with Ia (3) over bard structure has been successfully prepared by using mixed surfactants of commercially available nonionic block copolymer P123 (EO(20)PO(70)EO(20)) and anionic sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS) as structure-directing agents through an acid-catalyzed silica sol-gel process. XRD, TEM, and N(2) sorption measurements show that the products have highly ordered bicontinuous cubic mesostructure with high surface area (similar to 770 m(2)/g), large pore volume (similar to 1.5 cm(3)/g) and uniform pore size (similar to 10 nm). Effects of preparation parameters on the formation of the mesostructure have been extensively investigated. It is found that the molar ratios of SDS/P123 between 2.1 and 2.5 and that of silicic species to P123 in the range from 40 to 75 are favorable for the formation of highly ordered Ia (3) over bard mesostructure. Prolonging hydrothermal treatment time leads to almost unchanged cell parameters of the products, whereas there is obvious increase of the pore sizes and pore volume. The results show that resultant template-free mesoporous silica products have excellent thermal stability, and they are more stable in N2 atmosphere than in air. Morphologies of the resultant materials can be further controlled by adding inorganic salt (such as Na(2)SO(4)) into the mixed surfactants system. Coral- and petaline-like mesoporous silica with continuous skeletons can be obtained. Understanding this synthesis system might be useful for economical and large-scale production of mesoporous materials with controllable structures.

Abstract:Ordered mesoporous silica materials (SBA-family) with 2-D hexagonal (p6mm) and 3-D cubic (Im3m) symmetry have been efficiently synthesized by using the mixture of triblock copolymer surfactant and sodium dodecylsulfonate as co-templates at relatively low concentration. X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherms are used to characterize these mesoporous silica materials, and the results show that the mesoporous silica mateials synthesized from the mixed surfactants have better mesostructural order and smaller mesopore size, compared with mesoporous silica materials of SBA-15 and SBA-16. Moreover, the microporosity in these ordered mesoporous materials is well controlled by the weight ratios of polymer surfactant to anionic surfactant. Particularly, when P123 concentration in the starting gel is reduced to less than 0.4wt.%, the walls of ordered hexagonal mesoporous silica are micropore-free.

Abstract:A facile nonpolar solvent-assisted Stober method has been developed to synthesize ordered mesoporous silica materials with tunable pore size and diverse morphologies and mesostructures by using cetyltrimethylammonium bromide as the template and tetraethyl orthosilicate as silica precursor in a simple aqueous-phase synthesis system. By simply changing the amount of n-hexane and ammonia-water in the system, ordered mesoporous silica with pore sizes of 2.7-10.5 nm, various morphologies (nanocubes, truncated nanocubes, core-shell microspheres, and twisted nanorods), a high surface area up to 888 m(2)/g, and a large pore volume of 1.55 cm(3)/g are synthesized. Owing to their highly hydrophilic surface, large and accessible pores, and high surface area, the mesoporous silica materials exhibit an excellent performance in adsorption of dye molecules of large dimension (1.6 nm) with a maximum adsorption capacity of 106 mg/g in 10 min at 200 mg/L initial Rhodamine B concentration.

Abstract:Ordered three-dimensional (3D) large-pore mesoporous channels have been fabricated based on mesoporous silica SBA-15 and SBA-16 by a new synthesis strategy, which involves the introduction of organic co-solvents followed by a high temperature hydrothermal process. The previous small entrances (2.3 nm) for caged cubic mesoporous SBA-16 can be enlarged (up to 10.8 nm) by using this approach. These highly ordered mesoporous silica materials with large entrances have been verified to be suitable templates for the synthesis of ordered cubic carbon replicas with a novel ball-type pore structure.

Abstract:Highly ordered cubic mesoporous silica SBA-16 with millimeter spherical morphology (2 similar to 4 mm in diameter) has been synthesized using triblock copolymer as templates in the presence of inorganic salts. The use of inorganic salts greatly improves the quality of the resulted mesostructure by increasing the self-assemble ability of organic species and results in the formation. of millimeter spheres by enhancing the interaction at the inorganic/organic interface. The calcined millimeter SBA-16 spheres have a surface area of 750 m(2)/g, a pore volume of 0.52 cm(3)/g, and a large pore size of 7.8 nm. These millimeter spheres may be readily used in the separation of large molecules.

Abstract:Ti-SBA-16 mesoporous silica with a cubic Im3m structure has been successfully synthesized through prehydrolysis of a silica precursor in the presence of a tri-block copolymer F127 under acidic condition. X-ray diffraction (XRD) shows that the highly ordered mesostructure was maintained even at the high loading of titanium up to 5.5 (bulk molar ratio SiO 2 /TiO 2 ). UV–vis and Raman spectroscopy reveal that the titanium species was highly dispersed in the silica framework with tetrahedral coordinate and octahedral coordinate, respectively. N 2 -adsorption data exhibit that the BET surface, pore size and pore volume were maintained with an increase of titanium species loading for this cubic Im3m mesoporous composite. SEM image shows its amorphous morphology. The synthesis of mesoporous TiO 2 -containing SBA-16 composite with a cubic Im3m structure will open new applications for catalysts.

Abstract:Highly ordered hexagonal mesoporous silica SEA-15 with tunable morphology such as donut-like has been synthesized through the cosolvent approach. Donut-like SEA-15 prepared by using DMF cosolvent shows highly ordered circle channels and large mesopore size of 9.9 nm and pore volume of 1.45 cm(3)/g. Cosurfactant approach has also been used to control the morphology of SEA-15, resulting that highly ordered hard spheres (uniformed diameter-800 nm) mesoporous silica are formed. The morphology of mesoporous SEA-15 is much depended on the surface curvature energy of interface of inorganic silica and organic block copolymer species.

Abstract:Mesostructured silica materials of SBA-16 type were synthesized under varying conditions affecting the pore size distribution. The alpha(s)-plot method allows us to identify two populations of intrawall pores and measure their respective specific volumes. A semiquantitative treatment of these data yields an estimate for the intrawall pore radius. These results are discussed and related to the behavior of the long polar chains of the F127 surfactant in the synthesis gel.

Abstract:Hollow mesoporous silica spheres with radially aligned mesochannels were fabricated successfully by combining hard and soft templating methods. The microstructure, textural properties and the structure regulation approach of the hollow spheres were investigated. The results show that the hollow spheres are perfectly spherical, monodisperse, and present ordered mesochannels with pore size of ~2.20nm, high specific surface area and high pore volume. The textural properties of the hollow mesoporous silica spheres can be tuned by adjusting the alkali-treatment process of the carbon spheres and the concentration of the inorganic source.

Abstract:In this study, a facile one-step method was proposed to prepare pore-expanded hollow-structured mesoporous silica spheres. The method hollowed silica spheres, at the same time, expanded mesopores sizes. So this method not only achieved preparation of hollow mesoporous silica spheres by self-templating strategy but also expanded mesochannels. The influences of different pore-expanding agents and the reaction time on the degree of hollowing and pore-expanding were also investigated. The obtained samples possess hollow structure, well-defined spherical morphology, uniform particle size, large mesoporous volume, ordered, and large mesochannels. In addition, the hollow cavity size and the mesoporous size could be controlled via choosing the appropriate pore-expanding agent and reaction time.
