Abstract:Petersen's lemma on matrix uncertainty is commonly used in the analysis and design for uncertain systems with time-varying norm-bounded uncertain parameter. In this note, Petersen's lemma is extended to the case where the uncertain inequality contains two uncertain matrix pairs. The condition is given such that the Petersen's lemma gives a necessary and sufficient condition. A numerical example is given to show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove the following automatic adjoint theorem: For any sequence spaces E ( X ) E(X) and F ( Y ) F(Y) , if E ( X ) E(X) has the signed-weak gliding hump property and A A is an infinite matrix which transforms E ( X ) E(X) into F ( Y ) F(Y) , then the transpose matrix A ′ A’ of A A transforms F ( Y ) β F(Y)^\beta into E ( X ) β E(X)^\beta , and for any x ∈ E ( X ) x\in E(X) and T ∈ F ( Y ) β T\in F(Y)^\beta , [ A x , T ] = [ x , A ′ T ] [Ax,T]=[x,A’T] . That is, the adjoint operator of A A automatically exists and is just the transpose matrix A ′ A’ of A A . From the theorem we obtain a class of infinite matrix topological algebras ( λ , μ ) (\lambda ,\mu ) , and prove also a λ \lambda -multiplier convergence theorem of Orlicz-Pettis type. The theorem improves substantially the famous Stiles’ Orlicz-Pettis theorem.

Abstract:We extend some classical theorems in the theory of orthogonal polynomials on the unit circle to the matrix case. In particular, we prove a matrix analogue of Szegő’s theorem. As a by-product, we also obtain an elementary proof of the distance formula by Helson and Lowdenslager.

Abstract:The Steinitz lemma, a classic from 1913, states that $a_1,\ldots,a_n$, a sequence of vectors in $\R^d$ with $\sum_1^n a_i=0$, can be rearranged so that every partial sum of the rearranged sequence has norm at most $2d\max \|a_i\|$. In the matrix version $A$ is a $k\times n$ matrix with entries $a_i^j \in \R^d$ with $\sum_{j=1}^k\sum_{i=1}^na_i^j=0$. It is proved in \cite{OPW} that there is a rearrangement of row $j$ of $A$ (for every $j$) such that the sum of the entries in the first $m$ columns of the rearranged matrix has norm at most $40d^5\max \|a_i^j\|$ (for every $m$). We improve this bound to $(4d-2)\max \|a_i^j\|$.

Abstract:Matrix theory is essential for addressing practical problems and executing computational tasks. Matrices related to Hermite polynomials are essential due to their applications in quantum mechanics, numerical analysis, probability, and signal processing. Their orthogonality, recurrence relations, and spectral properties make them a valuable tool for both theoretical research and practical applications. From a different perspective, we introduced a variant of the Hermite matrix that incorporates triple factorials and demonstrated that this matrix satisfies various properties. By utilizing effective matrix algebra techniques, various algebraic properties of this matrix have been determined, including the product formula, inverse matrix and eigenvalues. Additionally, we extended this matrix to a more generalized form and derived several identities.

Abstract:The theorem proved in this paper gives a congruence for the traces of powers of an algebraic integer for the case in which the exponent of the power is a prime power. The theorem implies a congruence in Gauss’ form for the traces of the sums of powers of algebraic integers, generalizing many familiar versions of Fermat’s little theorem. Applied to the traces of integer matrices, this gives a proof of Arnold’s conjecture about the congruence of the traces of powers of such matrices for the case in which the exponent of the power is a prime power.

In this paper, we first consider the following problem (Problem 1): Given , find such that . Then, we consider the associated optimal approximation problem: Given , find such that , where is the Frobenius norm and is the solution set of Problem 1. By using the generalized singular value decomposition of a matrix pair, we deduce the solvability condition and the representation of the general solution of Problem 1. Moreover, we obtain the unique approximation solution of the optimal approximation problem. Finally, a numerical example is presented to show the correctness of our result.

Abstract:We show the failure of a matricial version of Grothendieck's theorem for operator spaces, thereby resolving a long-standing open question in the field. Moreover, by showing that such a counterexample can occur in the simplest context of commutative $C^*$-algebras, we address some other open questions in operator algebras. Our constructions, completely explicit and fairly simple, are inspired by some techniques in quantum information theory.

Abstract:The projection lemma (often also referred to as the elimination lemma) is one of the most powerful and useful tools in the context of linear matrix inequalities for system analysis and control. In its traditional formulation, the projection lemma only applies to strict inequalities, however, in many applications we naturally encounter non-strict inequalities. As such, we present, in this note, a non-strict projection lemma that generalizes both its original strict formulation as well as an earlier non-strict version. We demonstrate several applications of our result in robust linear-matrix-inequality-based marginal stability analysis and stabilization, a matrix S-lemma, which is useful in (direct) data-driven control applications, and matrix dilation.
