Abstract:This is an expository paper aiming to introduce Zilber's Exponential Closedness conjecture to a general audience. Exponential Closedness predicts when (systems of) equations involving addition, multiplication, and exponentiation have solutions in the complex numbers. It is a natural statement at the boundary between complex geometry and algebraic geometry. While it is open in full generality, many special cases and variants have been proven in the last two decades. In the first part of the paper we give a proof of a special case of the conjecture, namely, we show that exponential sums in a single complex variable, such as $e^{\sqrt{2}z}+3i e^{5z}+\pi$, always have infinitely many zeroes. This follows from well-known results in the literature and can actually be proven by standard complex analytic tools. We present a proof, motivated by the ideas of Zilber and Gallinaro, which uses simplified versions of some ingredients of more advanced techniques in the area, thus allowing the reader to explore these advanced proofs on a simple example. Our approach uses only elementary techniques (from standard undergraduate algebra and complex analysis), and the proofs of some of the main ingredients appear to be new. Moreover, these ingredients come from various areas of mathematics, such as functional transcendence and complex geometry, and are a useful way of introducing some classical concepts in these areas to the reader. In the second part we explain the Exponential Closedness conjecture and discuss some known special cases, not least the so-called ``raising to powers'' case (due to Gallinaro) which generalises the above-mentioned result and whose proof uses advanced versions of the tools presented in the first part of the paper.

Abstract:Kolmogorov’s exponential inequalities are basic tools for studying the strong limit theorems such as the classical laws of the iterated logarithm for both independent and dependent random variables. This paper establishes the Kolmogorov type exponential inequalities of the partial sums of independent random variables as well as negatively dependent random variables under the sub-linear expectations. As applications of the exponential inequalities, the laws of the iterated logarithm in the sense of non-additive capacities are proved for independent or negatively dependent identically distributed random variables with finite second order moments. For deriving a lower bound of an exponential inequality, a central limit theorem is also proved under the sub-linear expectation for random variables with only finite variances.

Abstract:We deduce Katz's theorems for $(A,B)$-exponential sums over finite fields using $\ell$-adic cohomology and a theorem of Denef-Loeser, removing the hypothesis that $A+B$ is relatively prime to the characteristic $p$. In some degenerate cases, the Betti number estimate is improved using toric decomposition and Adolphson-Sperber's bound for the degree of $L$-functions. Applying the facial decomposition theorem in \cite{W1}, we prove that the universal family of $(A,B)$-polynomials is generically ordinary for its $L$-function when $p$ is in certain arithmetic progression.

On the exponential convergence of the Kaczmarz algorithm

Abstract:The Kaczmarz algorithm (KA) is a popular method for solving a system of linear equations. In this note we derive a new exponential convergence result for the KA. The key allowing us to establish the new result is to rewrite the KA in such a way that its solution path can be interpreted as the output from a particular dynamical system. The asymptotic stability results of the corresponding dynamical system can then be leveraged to prove exponential convergence of the KA. The new bound is also compared to existing bounds.

On the essential decreasing of the summation order in the Abel-Lidskii sense

Abstract:In this paper, we consider a problem of decreasing the summation order in the Abel-Lidskii sense. The problem has a significant prehistory since 1962 created by such mathematicians as Lidskii V.B., Katsnelson V.E., Matsaev V.I., Agranovich M.S. As a main result, we will show that the summation order can be decreased from the values more than a convergence exponent, in accordance with the Lidskii V.B. result, to an arbitrary small positive number. Additionally, we construct a qualitative theory of summation in the Abel-Lidkii sense and produce a number of fundamental propositions representing the interest themselves.

Abstract:International Journal of Number Theory, Ahead of Print. In this paper, we present a smooth version of Landau's explicit formula for the von Mangoldt arithmetical function. By assuming the validity of the Riemann hypothesis, we show that in order to determine whether a natural number [math] is a prime number, it is sufficient to know the location of a number of nontrivial zeros of the Riemann zeta function of order [math]. Next we use Heisenberg's inequality to support the conjecture that this number of zeros cannot be essentially diminished.

Uniform bounds for Kloosterman sums of half-integral weight with applications

Abstract:Sums of Kloosterman sums have deep connections with the theory of modular forms, and their estimation has many important consequences. Kuznetsov used his famous trace formula and got a power-saving estimate with respect to x with implied constants depending on m and n . Recently, in 2009, Sarnak and Tsimerman obtained a bound uniformly in x , m and n . The generalized Kloosterman sums are defined with multiplier systems and on congruence subgroups. Goldfeld and Sarnak bounded sums of them with main terms corresponding to exceptional eigenvalues of the hyperbolic Laplacian. Their error term is a power of x with implied constants depending on all the other factors. In this paper, for a wide class of half-integral weight multiplier systems, we get the same bound with the error term uniformly in x , m and n . Such uniform bounds have great applications. For the eta-multiplier, Ahlgren and Andersen obtained a uniform and power-saving bound with respect to m and n , which resulted in a convergent error estimate on the Rademacher exact formula of the partition function p ⁢ ( n ) . We also establish a Rademacher-type exact formula for the difference of partitions of rank modulo 3, which allows us to apply our power-saving estimate to the tail of the formula for a convergent error bound.

Abstract:Recently, we established and used the generalized Littlewood theorem concerning contour integrals of the logarithm of analytical function to obtain new criteria equivalent to the Riemann hypothesis. The same theorem was subsequently applied to calculate certain infinite sums and study the properties of zeroes of a few analytical functions. In this article, we discuss what are, in a sense, inverse applications of this theorem. We first prove a Lemma that if two meromorphic on the whole complex plane functions f(z) and g(z) have the same zeroes and poles, taking into account their orders, and have appropriate asymptotic for large |z|, then for some integer n, dnln(f(z))dzn=dnln(g(z))dzn. The use of this Lemma enables proofs of many identities between elliptic functions, their transformation and n-tuple product rules. In particular, we show how exactly for any complex number a, ℘(z)-a, where ℘(z) is the Weierstrass ℘ function, can be presented as a product and ratio of three elliptic θ1 functions of certain arguments. We also establish n-tuple rules for some elliptic theta functions.

Abstract:This work begins by introducing the groundbreaking concept of log-p-analytic functions. Following this introduction, we proceed to delineate four distinct formulations of Landau-type theorems, specifically crafted for the domain of poly-analytic functions. Among these, two theorems are distinguished by their exactitude, and a third theorem offers a refinement to the existing work of Abdulhadi and Hajj. Concluding the paper, we present four specialized versions of Landau-type theorems applicable to a subset of bounded log-p-analytic functions, resulting in the derivation of two precise outcomes.

Abstract:The history of the theory of linear forms in logarithms is well known. We shall briefly sketch only some of the moments connected with new technical progress and important for our article. This theory was originated by pioneer works of A.O. Gelfond (see, for example, [5, 6]); with the help of the ideas which arose in connection with the solution of 7-th Hilbert problem (construction of auxiliary functions, extrapolation of zeros and small values), the bounds for the homogenous linear forms in two logarithms were proved. In the middle of the sixties A. Baker, [1], using auxiliary functions in several complex variables, for the first time obtained bounds for linear forms in any number of logarithms, both in the homogenous and non-homogenous cases. All further development of the theory is connected with improvements of these bounds. So N.I. Feldman introduced the so-called binomial polynomials in the construction of the auxiliary function, and due to this the dependence of the bounds on the coefficients of the linear forms was improved. The Kummer theory was used by A. Baker and H. Stark, [2], to improve the dependence of the estimates on the parameters related to the algebraic numbers appearing as arguments of the logarithms. The further improvements of this dependence are connected with the introduction of bounds for the number of zeros of polynomials on algebraic groups in works of G. Wüstholz. [14], P. Philippon and M. Waldschmidt, [11], A. Baker and G. Wüstholz, [3].

Abstract:In his lost notebook, Ramanujan recorded beautiful identities. These include earlier versions of Koshliakov's formula for the divisor function and the transformation formula for the logarithm of Dedekind's $\eta-$function. In this paper we establish some generalizations of these formulas of Ramanujan in a setting that only recently reemerged in the literature and which concerns a beautiful theory due to Koshliakov.

Abstract:This short and simple communication is motivated by recent papers by L. Colzani and A. Kochergin. We give a brief analysis of an example by Poincaré related to sums of the type $ \sum_{k=0}^{t-1} f(k{\alpha}+{x})$ where $f$ is a continuous periodic function and $\alpha$ is irrationaland its recent generalisations. Most of the constructions under consideration are well-known. In this note, we just wanted to bring all the results together and give a general and improved multi-dimensional formulation of a recent result by A. Kochergin, prove non-existence of a universal continuous function and discuss some of the related results in terms of Diophantine Approximation. In particular, in our opinion smoothness results involving Diophantine exponents $\omega$, $\hat{\omega}$ and $\hat{\lambda}$ had never been documented before.

Abstract:An estimate of Kloosterman sums with very few terms is obtained. The modulus corresponding to this sum is a powerful number, i.e., the radical (the product of all prime factors) of the modulus is very small in comparison with the modulus itself on the logarithmic scale. The proof essentially uses methods of A.G. Postnikov and H. Iwaniec.

Log-concavity in Combinatorics

Abstract:We survey some of the mechanisms used to prove that naturally defined sequences in combinatorics are log-concave. Among these mechanisms are Alexandrov's inequality for mixed discriminants, the Alexandrov Fenchel inequality for mixed volumes, Lorentzian polynomials, and the Hard Lefschetz theorem. We use these mechanisms to prove some new log-concavity and extremal results related to partially ordered sets and matroids. We present joint work with Ramon van Handel and Xinmeng Zeng to give a complete characterization for the extremals of the Kahn-Saks inequality. We extend Stanley's inequality for regular matroids to arbitrary matroids using the technology of Lorentzian polynomials. As a result, we provide a new proof of the weakest Mason conjecture. We also prove necessary and sufficient conditions for the Gorenstein ring associated to the basis generating polynomial of a matroid to satisfy Hodge-Riemann relations of degree one on the facets of the positive orthant.
