Abstract:Gacs-Kucera Theorem, tightened by Barmpalias and Lewis-Pye, w.t.t.-reduces each infinite sequence to a Kolmogorov--Martin-Lof random one and is broadly used in various Math and CS areas. Its early proofs are somewhat cumbersome, but using some general concepts yields significant simplification illustrated here.

Abstract:We present a short proof of a celebrated result of Gács and Körner giving sufficient and necessary condition on the joint distribution of two discrete random variables $X$ and $Y$ for the case when their mutual information matches the extractable (in the limit) common information. Our proof is based on the observation that the mere existence of certain random variables jointly distributed with $X$ and $Y$ can impose restriction on all random variables jointly distributed with $X$ and $Y$.

Solovay degree. Barmpalias and Lewis-Pye (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1604.00216" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1604.00216">arXiv:1604.00216</a>) strengthened this result by showing that, for all left-c.e. reals $\alpha$ and $\beta$ such that $\beta$ is Martin-Löf random and all left-c.e. approximations $a_0,a_1,\dots$ and $b_0,b_1,\dots$ of $\alpha$ and $\beta$, respectively, the limit \begin{equation*} \lim\limits_{n\to\infty}\frac{\alpha - a_n}{\beta - b_n} \end{equation*} exists and does not depend on the choice of the left-c.e. approximations to $\alpha$ and $\beta$. Here we give an equivalent formulation of the result of Barmpalias and Lewis-Pye in terms of nondecreasing translation functions and generalize their result to the set of all (i.e., not necessarily left-c.e.) reals.

Abstract:In this paper we present the theory of lacunary trigonometric sums and lacunary sums of dilated functions, from the origins of the subject up to recent developments. We describe the connections with mathematical topics such as equidistribution and discrepancy, metric number theory, normality, pseudorandomness, Diophantine equations, and the subsequence principle. In the final section of the paper we prove new results which provide necessary and sufficient conditions for the central limit theorem for subsequences, in the spirit of Nikishin's resonance theorem for convergence systems. More precisely, we characterize those sequences of random variables which allow to extract a subsequence satisfying a strong form of the central limit theorem.

Abstract:A theorem of Frieze from 1985 asserts that the total weight of the minimum spanning tree of the complete graph $K_n$ whose edges get independent weights from the distribution $UNIFORM[0,1]$ converges to Apéry's constant in probability, as $n\to\infty$. We generalize this result to sequences of graphs $G_n$ that converge to a graphon $W$. Further, we allow the weights of the edges to be drawn from different distributions (subject to moderate conditions). The limiting total weight $\kappa(W)$ of the minimum spanning tree is expressed in terms of a certain branching process defined on $W$, which was studied previously by Bollobás, Janson and Riordan in connection with the giant component in inhomogeneous random graphs.

Abstract:A classical result of Fekete gives necessary conditions on a compact set in the complex plane so that it contains infinitely many sets of conjugate algebraic integers. We prove an effective version of Fekete's theorem in terms of a height function. As an application, we give a lower bound on the growth of the leading coefficient of certain polynomial sequences, generalizing a result by Schur. Lastly, we give an upper bound on minimal asymptotics of height over sequences of algebraic numbers.

A Generalized Lévy-Khintchine Theorem

Abstract:The famous Lévy-Khintchine theorem is a beautiful limiting law for the denominators of the convergents of the continued fraction expansion of a real number. In a recent breakthrough, Cheung and Chevallier (Annales scientifiques de l'ENS, 2024) extended this theorem to higher dimensions. In this paper, we consider multiple generalizations of the definition of the best approximates of a matrix and prove analogues of the Lévy-Khintchine theorem for all these generalizations. A special case of our theorem answers a question posed by Cheung and Chevallier about Lévy-Khintchine type theorems for arbitrary norms. Another notable instance of our results resolves a conjecture of Yitwah Cheung. While our findings are new for higher dimensions, even in the one-dimensional case our work is a significant improvement over available results. Notably, we extend the results of Cheung and Chevallier by proving their theorems for any Birkhoff generic point and by permitting the best approximates to satisfy additional geometric and arithmetic conditions. Moreover, our main theorem, from which the above results follow, also extends the recent work of Shapira and Weiss.

Abstract:The well-known combinatorial lemma of Karpovsky, Milman and Alon and a very recent one of Kerr and Li are extended. The obtained lemmas are applied to study the maximal pattern entropy introduced in the paper. It turns out that the maximal pattern entropy is equal to the supremum of sequence entropies over all sequences both in topological and measure-theoretical settings. Moreover, it is shown the maximal pattern entropy of any topological system is logk for some k∈N∪{∞} with k the maximal length of intrinsic sequence entropy tuples; and a zero-dimensional system has zero sequence entropy for any sequence if and only if the maximal pattern with respect to any open cover is of polynomial order.

Abstract:Bliem and Kousidis recently considered a family of random variables whose distributions are given by the generalized Galois numbers (after normalization). We give probabilistic interpretations of these random variables, using inversions in random words, random lattice paths and random Ferrers diagrams, and use these to give new proofs of limit theorems as well as some further limit results.
Kac's Central Limit Theorem by Stein's Method

Abstract:In $1946$, Mark Kac proved a Central Limit type theorem for a sequence of random variables that were not independent. The random variables under consideration were obtained from the angle-doubling map. The idea behind Kac's proof was to show that although the random variables under consideration were not independent, they were what he calls \textit{statistically independent} (in modern terminology, this concept is called long range independence). The final conclusion of his paper was that the sample averages of the random variables, suitably normalized converges to the standard normal distribution. We describe a new proof of Mark Kac's result by applying Stein's method and show that the normalized sample averages converge to the standard normal distribution in the Wasserstein metric, which is stronger than the convergence in distribution.

Abstract:Let $r_k(N)$ denote the size of the largest subset of $[N] = \{1,\ldots,N\}$ with no $k$-term arithmetic progression. We show that for $k\ge 5$, there exists $c_k>0$ such that \[r_k(N)\ll N\exp(-(\log\log N)^{c_k}).\] Our proof is a consequence of recent quasipolynomial bounds on the inverse theorem for the Gowers $U^k$-norm as well as the density increment strategy of Heath-Brown and Szemer\'{e}di as reformulated by Green and Tao.

Abstract:We give a short new proof of the Arendt-Chernoff-Kato theorem, which characterizes generators of positive C0 semigroups in order unit spaces. The proof avoids half-norms and subdifferentials, and is based on a sufficient condition for an operator to have positive inverse, which is new even for matrices.

Abstract:We show that most arithmetic circuit lower bounds and relations between lower bounds naturally fit into the representation-theoretic framework suggested by geometric complexity theory (GCT), including: the partial derivatives technique (Nisan-Wigderson), the results of Razborov and Smolensky on $AC^0[p]$, multilinear formula and circuit size lower bounds (Raz et al.), the degree bound (Strassen, Baur-Strassen), the connected components technique (Ben-Or), depth 3 arithmetic circuit lower bounds over finite fields (Grigoriev-Karpinski), lower bounds on permanent versus determinant (Mignon-Ressayre, Landsberg-Manivel-Ressayre), lower bounds on matrix multiplication (Bürgisser-Ikenmeyer) (these last two were already known to fit into GCT), the chasms at depth 3 and 4 (Gupta-Kayal-Kamath-Saptharishi; Agrawal-Vinay; Koiran), matrix rigidity (Valiant) and others. That is, the original proofs, with what is often just a little extra work, already provide representation-theoretic obstructions in the sense of GCT for their respective lower bounds. This enables us to expose a new viewpoint on GCT, whereby it is a natural unification and broad generalization of known results. It also shows that the framework of GCT is at least as powerful as known methods, and gives many new proofs-of-concept that GCT can indeed provide significant asymptotic lower bounds. This new viewpoint also opens up the possibility of fruitful two-way interactions between previous results and the new methods of GCT; we provide several concrete suggestions of such interactions. For example, the representation-theoretic viewpoint of GCT naturally provides new properties to consider in the search for new lower bounds.

Abstract:For a graph G and p∈[0,1] , we denote by Gp the random sparsification of G obtained by keeping each edge of G independently, with probability p . We show that there exists a C>0 such that if p≥C(logn)1/3n−2/3 and G is an n ‐vertex graph with n∈3N and δ(G)≥2n3 , then with high probability Gp contains a triangle factor. Both the minimum degree condition and the probability condition, up to the choice of C , are tight. Our result can be viewed as a common strengthening of the seminal theorems of Corrádi and Hajnal, which deals with the extremal minimum degree condition for containing triangle factors (corresponding to p=1 in our result), and Johansson, Kahn and Vu, which deals with the threshold for the appearance of a triangle factor in G(n,p) (corresponding to G=Kn in our result). It also implies a lower bound on the number of triangle factors in graphs with minimum degree at least 2n3 which gets close to the truth.

Abstract:The KKM theorem, due to Knaster, Kuratowski, and Mazurkiewicz in 1929, is a fundamental result in fixed-point theory, which has seen numerous extensions and applications. In this paper we survey old and recent generalizations of the KKM theorem and their applications in the areas of piercing numbers, mass partition, fair division, and matching theory. Abstract:We study the problem of the decay of initial data in the form of a unit step for the Bogoyavlensky lattices. In contrast to the Gurevich–Pitaevskii problem of the decay of initial discontinuity for the KdV equation, it turns out to be exactly solvable, since the dynamics is linearizable due to termination on the half-line. The answer is written in terms of generalized hypergeometric functions, which serve as exponential generating functions for generalized Catalan numbers. This can be proved by the fact that the generalized Hankel determinants for these numbers are equal to 1, which is a well-known result in combinatorics. Another method is based on a nonautonomous symmetry reduction consistent with the dynamics. It reduces the lattice equation to a finite-dimensional system and makes it possible to solve the problem for a more general finite-parameter family of initial data.

Abstract:Gromov (2003) constructed finitely generated groups whose Cayley graphs contain all graphs from a given infinite sequence of expander graphs of unbounded girth and bounded diameter-to-girth ratio. These so-called Gromov monster groups provide examples of finitely generated groups that do not coarsely embed into Hilbert space, among other interesting properties. If graphs in Gromov's construction admit graphical small cancellation labellings, then one gets similar examples of Cayley graphs containing all the graphs of the family as isometric subgraphs. Osajda (2020) recently showed how to obtain such labellings using the probabilistic method. In this short note, we simplify Osajda's approach, decreasing the number of generators of the resulting group significantly.
