Abstract:We present a simple proof of Toda′s result (Toda (1989), in "Proceedings, 30th Annual IEEE Symposium on Foundations of Computer Science," pp. 514-519), which states that ⊕ P is hard for the Polynomial Hierarchy under randomized reductions. Our approach is circuit-based in the sense that we start with uniform circuit definitions of the Polynomial Hierarchy and apply the Valiant-Vazirani lemma on these circuits (Valiant and Vazirani (1986), Thoeret. Comput. Sci.47, 85-93).

Abstract:Abstract In this paper, using pseudo path algebras, we generalize Gabriel's Theorem on elementary algebras to left Artinian algebras over a field k when the quotient algebra can be lifted by a radical. Our particular interest is when the dimension of the quotient algebra determined by the nth Hochschild cohomology is less than 2 (for example, when k is finite or char k = 0). Using generalized path algebras, a generalization of Gabriel's Theorem is given for finite dimensional algebras with 2-nilpotent radicals which is splitting over its radical. As a tool, the so-called pseudo path algebra is introduced as a new generalization of path algebras, whose quotient by ken is a generalized path algebra (see Fact 2.6). The main result is that (i) for a left Artinian k–algebra A and r = r(A) the radical of A. if the quotient algebra A/r can be lifted then A ≅ PSEk (Δ, , ρ) with Js ⊂ (ρ) ⊂ J for some s (Theorem 3.2); (ii) If A is a finite dimensional k–algebra with 2-nilpotent radical and the quotient by radical can be lifted, then A ≅ k(Δ, , ρ) with 2 ⊂ (ρ) ⊂ 2 + ∩ ker (Theorem 4.2), where Δ is the quiver of A and ρ is a set of relations. For all the cases we discuss in this paper, we prove the uniqueness of such quivers Δ and the generalized path algebras/pseudo path algebras satisfying the isomorphisms when the ideals generated by the relations are admissible (see Theorem 3.5 and 4.4).

Abstract:By a celebrated result of Kučera and Slaman (DOI:<a class="link-https link-external" data-doi="10.1137/S0097539799357441" href="https://doi.org/10.1137/S0097539799357441" rel="external noopener nofollow">https://doi.org/10.1137/S0097539799357441</a>), the Martin-Löf random left-c.e. reals form the highest left-c.e. Solovay degree. Barmpalias and Lewis-Pye (<a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1604.00216" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1604.00216">arXiv:1604.00216</a>) strengthened this result by showing that, for all left-c.e. reals $\alpha$ and $\beta$ such that $\beta$ is Martin-Löf random and all left-c.e. approximations $a_0,a_1,\dots$ and $b_0,b_1,\dots$ of $\alpha$ and $\beta$, respectively, the limit \begin{equation*} \lim\limits_{n\to\infty}\frac{\alpha - a_n}{\beta - b_n} \end{equation*} exists and does not depend on the choice of the left-c.e. approximations to $\alpha$ and $\beta$. Here we give an equivalent formulation of the result of Barmpalias and Lewis-Pye in terms of nondecreasing translation functions and generalize their result to the set of all (i.e., not necessarily left-c.e.) reals.

Abstract:We prove that if (M,\mathcal{X}) and (M,\mathcal{Y}) are countable models of the theory \mathrm{WKL}^{*}_{0} such that \mathrm{I}\Sigma_{1}(A) fails for some A \in \mathcal{X}\cap \mathcal{Y} , then (M,\mathcal{X}) and (M,\mathcal{Y}) are isomorphic. As a consequence, the analytic hierarchy collapses to \Delta^{1}_{1} provably in \mathrm{WKL}^{*}_{0} + \neg \mathrm{I}\Sigma^{0}_{1} , and \mathrm{WKL} is the strongest \Pi^{1}_{2} statement that is \Pi^{1}_{1} -conservative over \mathrm{RCA}^{*}_{0} + \neg \mathrm{I}\Sigma^{0}_{1} . Applying our results to the \Delta^{0}_{n} -definable sets in models of \mathrm{RCA}^{*}_{0} + \mathrm{B}\Sigma^{0}_{n} + \neg \mathrm{I}\Sigma^{0}_{n} that also satisfy an appropriate relativization of weak König’s lemma, we prove that for each n \ge 1 , the set of \Pi^{1}_{2} sentences that are \Pi^{1}_{1} -conservative over \mathrm{RCA}^{*}_{0} + \mathrm{B}\Sigma^{0}_{n} + \neg \mathrm{I}\Sigma^{0}_{n} is computably enumerable. In contrast, we prove that the set of \Pi^{1}_{2} sentences that are \Pi^{1}_{1} -conservative over \mathrm{RCA}^{*}_{0} + \mathrm{B}\Sigma^{0}_{n} is \Pi_{2} -complete. This answers a question of Towsner. We also show that \mathrm{RCA}_{0} + \mathrm{RT}^{2}_{2} is \Pi^{1}_{1} -conservative over \mathrm{B}\Sigma^{0}_{2} if and only if it is conservative over \mathrm{B}\Sigma^{0}_{2} with respect to \forall \Pi^{0}_{5} sentences.

Abstract:As part of a program to develop $K$-theoretic analogues of combinatorially important polynomials, Monical, Pechenik, and Searles (2021) proved two expansion formulas $\overline{\mathfrak{A}}_a = \sum_b Q_b^a(\beta)\overline{\mathfrak{P}}_b$ and $\overline{\mathfrak{Q}}_a = \sum_b M_b^a(\beta)\overline{\mathfrak{F}}_b,$ where each of $\overline{\mathfrak{A}}_a$, $\overline{\mathfrak{P}}_a$, $\overline{\mathfrak{Q}}_a$ and $\overline{\mathfrak{F}}_a$ is a family of polynomials that forms a basis for $\mathbb{Z}[x_1,\dots,x_n][\beta]$ indexed by weak compositions $a,$ and $Q_b^a(\beta)$ and $M_b^a(\beta)$ are monomials in $\beta$ for each pair $(a,b)$ of weak compositions. The polynomials $\overline{\mathfrak{A}}_a$ are the Lascoux atoms, $\overline{\mathfrak{P}}_a$ are the kaons, $\overline{\mathfrak{Q}}_a$ are the quasiLascoux polynomials, and $\overline{\mathfrak{F}}_a$ are the glide polynomials; these are respectively the $K$-analogues of the Demazure atoms $\mathfrak{A}_a$, the fundamental particles $\mathfrak{P}_a$, the quasikey polynomials $\mathfrak{Q}_a$, and the fundamental slide polynomials $\mathfrak{F}_a$. Monical, Pechenik, and Searles conjectured that for any fixed $a,$ $\sum_b Q_b^a(-1), \sum_b M_b^a(-1) \in \{0,1\},$ where $b$ ranges over all weak compositions. We prove this conjecture using a sign-reversing involution.

Abstract:We study k-Schur functions characterized by k-tableaux, proving combinatorial properties such as a k-Pieri rule and a k-conjugation. This new approach relies on developing the theory of k-tableaux, and includes the introduction of a weight-permuting involution on these tableaux that generalizes the Bender-Knuth involution. This work lays the groundwork needed to prove that the set of k-Schur Littlewood-Richardson coefficients contains the 3-point Gromov-Witten invariants; structure constants for the quantum cohomology ring.

An Elementary Proof of the FMP for Kleene Algebra

Abstract:Kleene Algebra (KA) is a useful tool for proving that two programs are equivalent. Because KA's equational theory is decidable, it integrates well with interactive theorem provers. This raises the question: which equations can we (not) prove using the laws of KA? Moreover, which models of KA are complete, in the sense that they satisfy exactly the provable equations? Kozen (1994) answered these questions by characterizing KA in terms of its language model. Concretely, equivalences provable in KA are exactly those that hold for regular expressions. Pratt (1980) observed that KA is complete w.r.t. relational models, i.e., that its provable equations are those that hold for any relational interpretation. A less known result due to Palka (2005) says that finite models are complete for KA, i.e., that provable equivalences coincide with equations satisfied by all finite KAs. Phrased contrapositively, the latter is a finite model property (FMP): any unprovable equation is falsified by a finite KA. Both results can be argued using Kozen's theorem, but the implication is mutual: given that KA is complete w.r.t. finite (resp. relational) models, Palka's (resp. Pratt's) arguments show that it is complete w.r.t. the language model. We embark on a study of the different complete models of KA, and the connections between them. This yields a novel result subsuming those of Palka and Pratt, namely that KA is complete w.r.t. finite relational models. Next, we put an algebraic spin on Palka's techniques, which yield a new elementary proof of the finite model property, and by extension, of Kozen's and Pratt's theorems. In contrast with earlier approaches, this proof relies not on minimality or bisimilarity of automata, but rather on representing the regular expressions involved in terms of transformation automata.

Abstract:We revisit the computation, due to Hesselholt and Madsen, of the K-theory of truncated polynomial algebras for perfect fields of positive characteristic. The resulting K-groups are expressed in terms of big Witt vectors of the field. The original proof relied on an understanding of cyclic polytopes in order to determine the genuine equivariant homotopy type of the cyclic bar construction for a suitable monoid. Using the Nikolaus-Scholze framework for topological cyclic homology we achieve the same result using only the homology of said cyclic bar construction, as well as the action of Connes' operator.

Abstract:In this paper we present a quantitative analysis of the first and second Borel-Cantelli Lemmas and of two of their generalisations: the Erdős-Rényi Theorem, and the Kochen-Stone Theorem. We will see that the first three results have direct quantitative formulations, giving an explicit relationship between quantitative formulations of the assumptions and the conclusion. For the Kochen-Stone theorem, however, we can show that the numerical bounds of a direct quantitative formulation are not computable in general. Nonetheless, we obtain a quantitative formulation of the Kochen-Stone Theorem using Tao's notion of metastability.

Quantum Polynomial Hierarchies: Karp-Lipton, error reduction, and lower bounds

Abstract:The Polynomial-Time Hierarchy ($\mathsf{PH}$) is a staple of classical complexity theory, with applications spanning randomized computation to circuit lower bounds to ''quantum advantage'' analyses for near-term quantum computers. Quantumly, however, despite the fact that at least \emph{four} definitions of quantum $\mathsf{PH}$ exist, it has been challenging to prove analogues for these of even basic facts from $\mathsf{PH}$. This work studies three quantum-verifier based generalizations of $\mathsf{PH}$, two of which are from [Gharibian, Santha, Sikora, Sundaram, Yirka, 2022] and use classical strings ($\mathsf{QCPH}$) and quantum mixed states ($\mathsf{QPH}$) as proofs, and one of which is new to this work, utilizing quantum pure states ($\mathsf{pureQPH}$) as proofs. We first resolve several open problems from [GSSSY22], including a collapse theorem and a Karp-Lipton theorem for $\mathsf{QCPH}$. Then, for our new class $\mathsf{pureQPH}$, we show one-sided error reduction for $\mathsf{pureQPH}$, as well as the first bounds relating these quantum variants of $\mathsf{PH}$, namely $\mathsf{QCPH}\subseteq \mathsf{pureQPH} \subseteq \mathsf{EXP}^{\mathsf{PP}}$.

The Lemmas play an important role in the derivation of novel isoperimetric inequalities. The original proofs relied on Sage, a symbolic algebra package, to factor certain algebraic varieties into irreducible components.

Abstract:Extending Martín Escardó's effectful forcing technique, we give a new proof of a well-known result: Brouwer's monotone bar theorem holds for any bar that can be realized by a functional of type $(\mathbb{N} \to \mathbb{N}) \to \mathbb{N}$ in Gödel's System T. Effectful forcing is an elementary alternative to standard sheaf-theoretic forcing arguments, using ideas from programming languages, including computational effects, monads, the algebra interpretation of call-by-name ${\lambda}$-calculus, and logical relations. Our argument proceeds by interpreting System T programs as well-founded dialogue trees whose nodes branch on a query to an oracle of type $\mathbb{N}\to\mathbb{N}$, lifted to higher type along a call-by-name translation. To connect this interpretation to the bar theorem, we then show that Brouwer's famous "mental constructions" of barhood constitute an invariant form of these dialogue trees in which queries to the oracle are made maximally and in order.

Abstract:The Aldous-Hoover Theorem concerns an infinite matrix of random variables whose distribution is invariant under finite permutations of rows and columns. It states that, up to equality in distribution, each random variable in the matrix can be expressed as a function only depending on four key variables: one common to the entire matrix, one that encodes information about its row, one that encodes information about its column, and a fourth one specific to the matrix entry. We state and prove the theorem within a category-theoretic approach to probability, namely the theory of Markov categories. This makes the proof more transparent and intuitive when compared to measure-theoretic ones. A key role is played by a newly identified categorical property, the Cauchy--Schwarz axiom, which also facilitates a new synthetic de Finetti Theorem. We further provide a variant of our proof using the ordered Markov property and the d-separation criterion, both generalized from Bayesian networks to Markov categories. We expect that this approach will facilitate a systematic development of more complex results in the future, such as categorical approaches to hierarchical exchangeability.

Abstract:We find a strong separation between two natural families of simple rank one theories in Keisler's order: the theories $T_\mathfrak{m}$ reflecting graph sequences, which witness that Keisler's order has the maximum number of classes, and the theories $T_{n,k}$, which are the higher-order analogues of the triangle-free random graph. The proof involves building Boolean algebras and ultrafilters "by hand" to satisfy certain model theoretically meaningful chain conditions. This may be seen as advancing a line of work going back through Kunen's construction of good ultrafilters in ZFC using families of independent functions. We conclude with a theorem on flexible ultrafilters, and open questions.
