Abstract:The theorem proved in this paper gives a congruence for the traces of powers of an algebraic integer for the case in which the exponent of the power is a prime power. The theorem implies a congruence in Gauss’ form for the traces of the sums of powers of algebraic integers, generalizing many familiar versions of Fermat’s little theorem. Applied to the traces of integer matrices, this gives a proof of Arnold’s conjecture about the congruence of the traces of powers of such matrices for the case in which the exponent of the power is a prime power.

Abstract:We provide elementary proofs of Lemmas 7.1 and 7.4 appearing in "The Cartan-Hadamard conjecture and the Little Prince", by B. Kloeckner and G. Kuperberg. The Lemmas play an important role in the derivation of novel isoperimetric inequalities. The original proofs relied on Sage, a symbolic algebra package, to factor certain algebraic varieties into irreducible components.

Abstract:We prove a generalization of the Hardy-Littlewood-Pólya rearrangement inequality to positive definite matrices. The inequality can be seen as a commutation principle in the sense of Iusem and Seeger. An important instrument in the proof is a first-order perturbation formula for a certain spectral function, which could be of independent interests. The inequality is then extended to rectangular matrices. Using our main results, we derive new inequalities for several distance-like functions encountered in various signal processing or machine learning applications.

Abstract:This work is motivated by an attempt to construct a two-dimensional analogue of the Wiener--Hopf method. It is supposed that understanding the branching structure of unknown functions will provide insight into the form in which these functions can be sought. The unknown functions are represented as two-dimensional integrals of analytic functions with parameters, making it natural to study the branching of the integration surface using Picard--Lefschetz theory. A convenient matrix-vector representation of the main result of Picard--Lefschetz theory is introduced, and the following two statements are formulated. First, under certain constraints, the integration surface can be represented as a finite-dimensional vector with coefficients in the group ring over the fundamental group of the space with removed singularities. Second, a bypass in the parameter space around one of the components of the Landau set is described by multiplication by a relatively simple matrix (also composed of elements from the group ring). Successive loops are described by the product of such matrices. As an illustration, it is shown how the matrix formalism yields the Picard-Lefschetz formula and provides nontrivial topological relationships in the parameter space.

Abstract:Let $F=(P,Q)\in\mathbb{C}[X,Y]^{2}$ be a polynomial mapping over the complex field $\mathbb{C}$. Suppose that $$ \det\,J_{F}(X,Y):=\frac{\partial P}{\partial X}\frac{\partial Q}{\partial Y}- \frac{\partial P}{\partial Y}\frac{\partial Q}{\partial X}=a\in\mathbb{C}^{\times}. $$ A mapping that satisfies the assumptions above is called a Keller mapping. In this paper we estimate the size of the co-image of $F$. We give a sufficient condition for surjectivity of Keller mappings in terms of its Phantom curve. This curve is closely related to the asymptotic variety of $F$.

Abstract:We show that if $A$ is an $n\times n$-matrix, then the diagonal entries of each power $A^{m}$ are uniquely determined by the principal minors of $A$, and can be written as universal (integral) polynomials in the latter. Furthermore, if the latter all equal $1$, then so do the former. These results are inspired by Problem B5 on the Putnam contest 2021, and shed a new light on the behavior of minors under matrix multiplication.

Abstract:We prove that if an $n\times n$ matrix defined over ${\mathbb Q}_p$ (or more generally an arbitrary complete, discretely-valued, non-Archimedean field) satisfies a certain congruence property, then it has a strictly maximal eigenvalue in ${\mathbb Q}_p$, and that iteration of the (normalized) matrix converges to a projection operator onto the corresponding eigenspace. This result may be viewed as a $p$-adic analogue of the Perron-Frobenius theorem for positive real matrices.

Characterizing and Testing Principal Minor Equivalence of Matrices

Abstract:Two matrices are said to be principal minor equivalent if they have equal corresponding principal minors of all orders. We give a characterization of principal minor equivalence and a deterministic polynomial time algorithm to check if two given matrices are principal minor equivalent. Earlier such results were known for certain special cases like symmetric matrices, skew-symmetric matrices with {0, 1, -1}-entries, and matrices with no cuts (i.e., for any non-trivial partition of the indices, the top right block or the bottom left block must have rank more than 1). As an immediate application, we get an algorithm to check if the determinantal point processes corresponding to two given kernel matrices (not necessarily symmetric) are the same. As another application, we give a deterministic polynomial-time test to check equality of two multivariate polynomials, each computed by a symbolic determinant with a rank 1 constraint on coefficient matrices.

Abstract:In the present paper we shall obtain the following result: Let n≥2 and m≥1 be integers. Let p(x1,...,xm) be a polynomial with zero constant term in non-commutative variables over an algebraically closed field K . Suppose that 1≤r≤n−1 , where r is the order of p . Then p(Tn(K)) is a dense subset of Tn(K)(r−1) (with respect to the Zariski topology). This is a solution of a problem presented by Gargate and de Mello and a supplement to a result obtained by Panja and Prasad in 2023.

Abstract:We derive a generalized matrix version of Pellet's theorem, itself based on a generalized Rouch\'{e} theorem for matrix-valued functions, to generate upper, lower, and internal bounds on the eigenvalues of matrix polynomials. Variations of the theorem are suggested to try and overcome situations where Pellet's theorem cannot be applied.
Maillet's property and Mahler's Conjecture on Liouville numbers fail for matrices

Abstract:In the early 1900's, Maillet proved that the image of any Liouville number under a rational function with rational coefficients is again a Liouville number. The analogous result for quadratic Liouville matrices in higher dimension turns out to fail. In fact, using a result by Kleinbock and Margulis, we show that among analytic matrix functions in dimension $n\ge 2$, Maillet's invariance property is only true for Möbius transformations with special coefficients. This implies that the analogue in higher dimension of an open question of Mahler on the existence of transcendental entire functions with Maillet's property has a negative answer. On the other hand, extending a topological argument of Erdős, we prove that for any injective continuous self mapping on the space of rectangular matrices, many Liouville matrices are mapped to Liouville matrices. Dropping injectivity, we consider setups similar to Alniaçik and Saias and show that the situation depends on the matrix dimensions $m,n$. Finally we discuss extensions of a related result by Burger to quadratic matrices. We state several open problems along the way.

Abstract:We prove that if R is a principal ideal ring and A\in\M_n(R) is a matrix with trace zero, then A is a commutator, that is, A=XY-YX for some X,Y\in\M_n(R). This generalises the corresponding result over fields due to Albert and Muckenhoupt, as well as that over Z due to Laffey and Reams, and as a by-product we obtain new simplified proofs of these results. We also establish a normal form for similarity classes of matrices over PIDs, generalising a result of Laffey and Reams. This normal form is a main ingredient in the proof of the result on commutators.
