A Contrastive Study of Semantic Preference and Semantic Prosody Between Chinese and English Corresponding Lexical Units

Abstract:Corpus linguistics has opened up a new horizon for contrastive lexical studies in a way that correspondence and equivalence between lexical units are to be established by examining semantic and functional characteristics.This paper starts to look into equivalents between Chinese and English contained in a parallel corpus and then describes how the equivalents correspond to each other in terms of semantic preference and semantic prosody.The aim is to establish bilingual corresponding lexical units which share similarities in meaning and function.The investigation shows that the equivalents tend to correspond semantically either in predominant preference or in preference range.Similarities in prosodic norms are found to be vital in establishing bilingual corresponding lexical units.
