Abstract:This study focuses on the comparisons of the syntactic-semantic structures between English and Chinese middles from the perspectives of cognitive linguistics and linguistic typology.The main findings are:i)The relative syntactic position of the theme of a middle causes the cross-category harmony of its predicate-argument role.ii)The degree of topicalization of a Chinese middle is greater than that of an English middle.The semantic restriction,derived from the theme of an English middle on its predicate,is greater than that of a Chinese middle on its predicate.iii)There are more verbs that can be used in Chinese middles than those used in English.iv)The predicate-argument structures between English middles and Chinese middles are different.The former is composed of "Vi+Adv" and the semantic restrictions between the two are weaker.The latter is composed of "Aux+Vi" and the semantic restrictions between the two are greater.

Abstract:Adjective is the most diversified part in its formation in various languages.Viewed from linguistics,the adjectives in Chinese,Japanese and English have specific characteristics in their forming,flexible using and rules of sentence order.In Japanese,especially,there is adjective verb,which Chinese and English do not have.Through the contrastive analysis on adjectives in these three languages,this essay intends to study the similarities and dissimilarities of adjectives in practical use.This kind of study is the basis of contrastive linguistics.

Abstract:A comparison of English and Chinese indicates that when the same thing or concept is referred to,the English text shows variety in choice of words while the Chinese text features repetition.This author proposes that the differences between English and Chinese can be accounted for in terms of phonetic requirements,word formation,text coherence and accessibility of referential nouns.

Abstract:This study examines the similarities and differences between Chinese and English verb valencies based on the Probabilistic Valency Pattern Theory (PVPT). We adopted the Parallel Universal Dependencies treebanks of Chinese and English to ensure that the comparison is under the same semantic meanings conveyed. The results show that (1) The verb valencies of both languages share similar distributions. One important difference is that Chinese has significantly more monovalent verbs (valency equals one) than English does; (2) For conveying similar meanings, Chinese adopts more verbs than English does, while the average combinatorial ability of Chinese verbs is relatively smaller; (3) The overall probabilistic valency pattern (PVP) of verbs in Chinese and English are similar; however, those of specific high-frequent verbs in Chinese and English demonstrate their own features. The findings may shed light on depicting the characteristics of Chinese and English verbs, thus facilitating studies in both linguistics and natural language processing.

Abstract:The phenomenon of "adjective movement" in Japanese is extremely similar to that of "the translocation of A attributives →A adverbials" in Chinese.The moved or trans-located adjectives are most limited to those which describe the external state—the form,the color and the degree—of things.The phrases formed with adjectives and nouns function as the subject or object in the sentences.The new modifying relations after the movement or translocation fall into two types: the state modifiers and the result modifiers.

Abstract:The paper aims to,on the basis of dependency grammar,investigate how Chinese words are used in texts of different styles to fulfill syntactic function in corpora.We use two dependency corpora —XINWENLIANBO and SHIHUASHISHUO— as the samples of written Chinese and spoken Chinese,and two smaller dependency corpora,XJ-K and XJ-S,as supplements.The results show that spoken Chinese and written Chinese show considerable difference in the word classes that are used to fulfill certain syntactic function.To be specific,most subjects are nouns in written Chinese,while pronouns in spoken Chinese.In addition,in spoken Chinese,many word classes can serve as attributives,and yet it is overwhelmingly nouns that serve as attributives in written Chinese.

Abstract:This paper focuses on one of the English introductory It patterns, which is known as Thematised Comment in the Theme-rheme theory of Functional Grammar, and its Chinese translation. By examining the self-built micro-corpus, we find that in such English sentences commenting words are usually put at the beginning part and the relating parts come after, stating the facts or reasons, while the Chinese versions are usually the other way round. This language characteristic reflects the different cultural psychology or thinking habits of the two nations, which, I believe, is caused, in turn, by the different productive forces and production relations between the two places. At the same time I hold that it remains to be proven whether there are factors of geographical environment, or even of race. In short, the two languages have their respective characteristics, and it's not a wise idea to say one is better or worse than the other. In essence, translation, in a sense, is a transformation of thinking mode. Only by understanding the thinking characteristics underlying the target language, can language learners realize the transformation between languages more quickly and more smoothly.

Abstract:A comparative analysis of psychological verbs between English and Chinese shows that basic sen-tence patterns of psychological verbs are respectively S (sensor)+V (state)+O (object),S (causer)+V (causing)+O (sensor). Chinese patterns also include the pattern of ba,dui and S(sensor)+V(state)+O(animate object)+V. The psychological causing sense in English is expressed by the lexical device while it is expressed by the S+V+O+V pat-tern in Chinese. The choice of subjects depends on the semantic structures of psychological verbs ,argument struc-ture and human cognitive perspective.

Abstract:This paper presents the findings of a multidimentional contrastive analysis of linguistic features between international and Chinese local biology journal English research articles based on a large-scale comparallel corpus. While both international and Chinese local journal English research articles as academic discourse are characterized as objective, formal, abstract and informational in rhetoric, international journal English research articles (IJERAs) are found more interactive and context-independent while Chinese local journal English research articles (CLJERAs) are more certain in tone and context-dependent. The authors/translators of CLJERAs seem to purposefully add a large number of first-person pronouns absent in Chinese local journal Chinese research articles (CLJCRAs) and overuse passive voices to meet the English writing conventions. Such linguistic features as premodifiers and emphatics have been remained or transferred into English from Chinese in their translating or writing process. The implications for professional English writing are discussed in the paper.

A Contrastive Study of Shell Noun Use in English and Chinese Academic Articles

Abstract:A shell noun (SN) is a type of abstract noun whose pragmatic meaning is encapsulated within the context. The term "shell" suggests its capability to encapsulate and convey information. Previous studies have focused primarily on the textual and interpersonal functions of SNs, often neglecting the comparative analysis of shell noun usage in Chinese and English discourses. To address this gap, this study conducts a comparative analysis of the use of SNs in English and Chinese based on a self-established corpus comprising three groups: 30 Chinese research papers written by Chinese scholars from Foreign Language Teaching and Research (外语教学与研究), 30 English research papers written by Chinese scholars, and 30 English research papers written by native English scholars from Studies in Second Language Acquisition over the past five years. The results are analyzed in terms of the overall distribution of SNs, the structural distribution of shell noun patterns, high-frequency SNs, and the category distribution of SNs. The findings reveal a similarity in the use of SNs by Chinese scholars in their Chinese and English papers, while there is a significant difference in the use of SNs between Chinese scholars and native English scholars in English articles

Abstract:As an important part of addressing forms, kinship terms are frequently used in our daily life. Both Chinese and English languages have their unique cultural background, which determines the significant differences between English and Chinese kinship systems. This paper first makes a comparative analysis and a systematic induction of the English and Chinese kinship terms, then reveal the causes that the differences between the two kinship systems result from, and finally attempts to explores three translation methods of Chinese and English kinship terms, which will attach much more significance to cross-cultural communication as well.
