Abstract:By implementing the model of Extended Units of Meaning(EUM model),the present article explores the patterning features of Chinese and English translation equivalents by examining parallel and comparable corpus evidence. The results show that i) Chinese and English translation equivalents exhibit marked differences in patterning;ii) for both English and Chinese node words, their collocation, colligation, semantic preference and semantic prosody are closely associated with each other and jointly establish three levels of co-selection;iii) in the source and translation texts, translation equivalents do not necessarily show exact correspondence to each other in all the above components, but tend to share the same or similar semantic prosody or prosodies. The above findings lend support from a bilingual perspective to the view that semantic prosody plays a leading role in the integration of a lexical item and its environment. They also reveal the relationshipbetween bilingual translation equivalents from the perspective of co-selection.The implications of these findings for language teaching and research are also discussed.
