Abstract:This study focuses on the comparisons of the syntactic-semantic structures between English and Chinese middles from the perspectives of cognitive linguistics and linguistic typology.The main findings are:i)The relative syntactic position of the theme of a middle causes the cross-category harmony of its predicate-argument role.ii)The degree of topicalization of a Chinese middle is greater than that of an English middle.The semantic restriction,derived from the theme of an English middle on its predicate,is greater than that of a Chinese middle on its predicate.iii)There are more verbs that can be used in Chinese middles than those used in English.iv)The predicate-argument structures between English middles and Chinese middles are different.The former is composed of "Vi+Adv" and the semantic restrictions between the two are weaker.The latter is composed of "Aux+Vi" and the semantic restrictions between the two are greater.

Abstract:This paper presents the findings of a multidimentional contrastive analysis of linguistic features between international and Chinese local biology journal English research articles based on a large-scale comparallel corpus. While both international and Chinese local journal English research articles as academic discourse are characterized as objective, formal, abstract and informational in rhetoric, international journal English research articles (IJERAs) are found more interactive and context-independent while Chinese local journal English research articles (CLJERAs) are more certain in tone and context-dependent. The authors/translators of CLJERAs seem to purposefully add a large number of first-person pronouns absent in Chinese local journal Chinese research articles (CLJCRAs) and overuse passive voices to meet the English writing conventions. Such linguistic features as premodifiers and emphatics have been remained or transferred into English from Chinese in their translating or writing process. The implications for professional English writing are discussed in the paper.

Abstract:Written expression plays an important role in students' English learning and has always been a weak part in English teaching. In daily learning, the differences between mother tongue and second language inevitably have an impact on students' writing. This paper aims to use contrastive analysis to explore the differences in lexical, syntactic, and discourse levels between English and Chinese writing, and proposes relevant teaching suggestions based on these, so as to improve students' English writing level and teachers' writing teaching level.

Abstract:Recent corpus-based studies of translation equivalence indicate that cross-language equivalence resides in units of meaning larger than single words, and that equivalence can be established by assessing co-selection patterns of translation pairs. This study explores the roles of semantic preference and semantic prosody for achieving cross-language equivalence between English and Chinese. Analysing the recurrent word-level translation equivalents extracted from the Shanghai Jiao Tong University Parallel Corpus, this study examines the semantic preferential and prosodic profiles of the equivalents in two comparable corpora. This chapter argues that cross-language equivalence lies in co-selection patterns and that semantic prosody serves as a defining criterion for establishing pattern equivalence. Finally, the chapter addresses practical implications for contrastive studies of phraseology, translation studies, and foreign language pedagogy.

Abstract:This paper describes a corpus-based contrastive study of collocation in English and Chinese. In light of the corpus-based approach to identify functionally equivalent units, the present paper attempts to identify the collocational translation equivalents of zunshou by using a parallel corpus and two comparable corpora. This study shows that more often than not, we can find in English more than one translation equivalents. By taking collocates into consideration, we are able to establish bilingual equivalence with more accuracy. The present study indicates that semantic preference and semantic prosody play a vital role in establishing equivalence between corresponding lexical sequences in English and Chinese. The studies of collocation across languages have potentially useful implications for foreign language teaching and learning, contrastive linguistic and translation studies, as well as bilingual lexicography.

Abstract:One of the Chinese-English machine translation burning problems is how to convert the Chinese aspects to their English correspondents. Chinese progressive aspect marker "ZAI+verb" can have multiple English correspondents besides the English progressive aspect. This paper takes an empirical approach to this unresolved conversion, based on a bilingual parallel corpus. It identifies 10 English translation equivalents of "ZAI+verb", figures out the conversion rates between "ZAI+verb" and its English translation equivalents, and presents 14 conversion rules to define the matching relationships between them. The results implies that the precise degree of Chinese-English machine translation of "ZAI+verb" to progressive aspects in English can be expected to be up to 67%.

Abstract:Having been debated and studied for more than one century, the part-of-speech classifications of contemporary Chinese words is still attracting considerable attention frommany linguists today. In this study, we aim to compare the classification systems of two lexicons C Dictionary of Contemporary Chinese (Fifth Edition) and Grammatical Knowledge-Base of Contemporary Chinese, and to observe the similarities and differences between their part-of-speech classifications of words in a comprehensive way. This paper discusses our preliminary observations, especially on the comparison of prepositions in the two lexicons. We expect that this type of contrastive studies will contribute to a deeper understanding of the parts-of-speech in Chinese, especially to the part-of-speech classification of certain Chinese words, which has long been debated.

Abstract:As the channel spreads the Chinese voice and promotes Chinese culture, the status of political document translation is self-evident with the deepening of global communication. Taking the English translation of the reports of the 20th and the 19th CPC National Congress as examples, this paper makes a contrastive study of their lexical features in a corpus-based way. With the assistance of corpus analysis software such as AntConc, TagAnt and WordSmith4.0, the author investigates TTR (type-token ratio), lexical density, average sentence length, high-frequency words, and keywords between two reports. It is found that the report of the 20th CPC Nation Congress has more diversified and native expressions with fewer words used, which provides a guiding significance for the English translation of political documents.

Abstract:Chinese has many features which are distinctly different from English. These differences are expected to affect activities in acquiring and using each language. The present chapter focuses on comparisons of Chinese character and word recognition versus English word recognition and processes required for mastering the two languages. Phonological coding seems to be involved in recognizing both English words and Chinese characters, though graphemic and semantic information affect the Chinese character recognition to a greater extent than they do in recognizing English words. The lexical representation of Chinese is not the word, nor the character per se, but probably the components which make up the characters. In reading acquisition, the stages that children go through to become skilled readers are similar in both Chinese and English.

Abstract:This paper presents a comparative analysis of the anaphoric functions of substitution in English and Chinese and reveals that English substitution is very apparent and has the fixed forms.Chinese does not have the fixed forms and it is used much less widely than that in English.Instead,Chinese has much more use of repetition and ellipsis.The study is of theoretical significance as well as practical value in translation and foreign language teaching and learning.

Abstract:A shell noun (SN) is a type of abstract noun whose pragmatic meaning is encapsulated within the context. The term "shell" suggests its capability to encapsulate and convey information. Previous studies have focused primarily on the textual and interpersonal functions of SNs, often neglecting the comparative analysis of shell noun usage in Chinese and English discourses. To address this gap, this study conducts a comparative analysis of the use of SNs in English and Chinese based on a self-established corpus comprising three groups: 30 Chinese research papers written by Chinese scholars from Foreign Language Teaching and Research (外语教学与研究), 30 English research papers written by Chinese scholars, and 30 English research papers written by native English scholars from Studies in Second Language Acquisition over the past five years. The results are analyzed in terms of the overall distribution of SNs, the structural distribution of shell noun patterns, high-frequency SNs, and the category distribution of SNs. The findings reveal a similarity in the use of SNs by Chinese scholars in their Chinese and English papers, while there is a significant difference in the use of SNs between Chinese scholars and native English scholars in English articles
A corpus-based study of cohesion in english medical texts and its chinese translation

Abstract:Cohesion as an indispensable linguistic feature in discourse analysis and translation has aroused many researchers' interest. To explore the regularity in shifting cohesive devices from English into Chinese our study was designed to analyze the similarities and differences of cohesive devices between English medical texts (EMTs) and their Chinese translation texts (CTTs). A parallel corpus consisting of 15 EMTs and 15 CTTs was established, each type of cohesive devices was identified, and paired t-test was run for statistic analysis. We have revealed that both EMTs and CTTS share more similarities than differences in the use of cohesive devices; the differences between them only exist in the employment of reference in terms of occurrence frequencies; the majority of cohesive devices are maintained in Chinese translation for precision, clarity and logicality. Our study will not only help medical students and medical workers but also shed light on EMP teaching and research.

Abstract:Corpus-based studies on semantic prosody of synonyms provide a new lens to teaching and learning synonyms in English. However, using corpus-based approach to facilitate teaching and learning English synonyms is still in its infancy in China. This study, based on Chinese Learner English Corpus (CLEC) and Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA), conducts a contrastive analysis of English near synonyms “motive” and “motivation” in terms of frequency, collocation features and semantic prosody between Chinese English Foreign Language learners and native English speakers. Findings suggest that the node word is underused by English learners. Furthermore, motive tends to co-occur with collocates related to illegal activities while motivation is apt to appear with collocates involved with normal or beneficial activities. In addition, Chinese language Learners overuse negative semantic prosody of motivation and positive semantic prosody of motive. Reasons for underuse and misuse are explored and research implications are discussed as well.
A comparative analysis of English for academic purposes teachers' interactive metadiscourse across the British and Chinese contexts

Abstract:This exploratory research compares the interactive metadiscourse use by native English-speaking English for academic purposes (EAP) writing teachers in the United Kingdom and their non-native counterparts in the Chinese contexts. The analysis is based on a self-compiled corpus, including two sub-corpora, which were composed of instructor contributions to classroom discourse: eight sessions of EAP lessons from the Chinese context and eight sessions of EAP lessons from the British context. Adopting an interpersonal model of metadiscourse, the two sub-corpora were compared to examine the similarities and differences in their use of interactive metadiscourse. Findings of the comparative analysis reveal that EAP teachers from both contexts rely heavily on transition markers and frame markers to organize their teaching but differ in particular linguistic realizations. This may indicate the impact of a range of factors such as logical preferences, development order of acquisition, discourse community, and speech community on teachers' interactive metadiscourse strategies. The article concludes with a few implications for metadiscourse research in spoken academic genres.

Abstract:This paper focuses on one of the English introductory It patterns, which is known as Thematised Comment in the Theme-rheme theory of Functional Grammar, and its Chinese translation. By examining the self-built micro-corpus, we find that in such English sentences commenting words are usually put at the beginning part and the relating parts come after, stating the facts or reasons, while the Chinese versions are usually the other way round. This language characteristic reflects the different cultural psychology or thinking habits of the two nations, which, I believe, is caused, in turn, by the different productive forces and production relations between the two places. At the same time I hold that it remains to be proven whether there are factors of geographical environment, or even of race. In short, the two languages have their respective characteristics, and it's not a wise idea to say one is better or worse than the other. In essence, translation, in a sense, is a transformation of thinking mode. Only by understanding the thinking characteristics underlying the target language, can language learners realize the transformation between languages more quickly and more smoothly.

Abstract:In this paper, we introduce our ongoing research on a Chinese-English Contrastive Language Knowledge Base, including its architecture, the selection of its entries and the XML-based annotation schemes used. We also report on the progress of annotation. The knowledge base is linguistically motivated, focusing on a wide range of sub-sentential contrasts between Chinese and English. It will offer a new form of bilingual resources for NLP tasks, for use in contrastive linguistic research and translation studies, amongst others. Currently, joint efforts are being made to develop tools for Computer-Assisted Translation and Second Language Acquisition using this knowledge base.
