Contrast of Vocabulary Collocation Between Chinese and English in English Writing Corpus of Agricultural Class

Abstract:Based on the semantic theory of paradigmatic and syntagmatic relations,the essay gives a contrastive analysis of Chinese and English from perspectives of aesthetical value,subset of semantic categories,and cultural implication.On a foundation of concrete examples from English writing corpus of agricultural class,the essay concludes that the three factors are major causes of different vocabulary collocations of Chinese and English.Vocabulary collocation is the product of semantic selection and paradigmatic and syntagmatic construction between words and language segments,rather than the simple combination of words.The key to an acceptable collocation is to change lexical knowledge to mental lexicon knowledge and furthermore to activate and enlarge the semantic net of mental lexicon knowledge.
