Abstract:This paper proposed and experimentally demonstrated an all-fiber tunable and programmable bandpass filter using a linearly chirped fiber Bragg grating (CFBG). The center wavelength and spacing of the transmission peaks could be independently tuned via computer. The tunable range is about 18 nm. With this filter we demonstrated a tunable fiber ring laser which has an output power of about -7 dBm, full-width at half-maximum linewidth of ~0.017 nm which is limited by the resolution of the optical spectrum analyzer (OSA). Furthermore, a spacing tunable dual-wavelength fiber laser was achieved with the same setup. This all-fiber laser features advantages like simple structure, low cost, flexible and digital tuning capability.

Abstract:We demonstrate a tunable erbium-doped fiber ring laser based on an all-fiber filter. The filter consists of an optical circulator, a fiber loop mirror(FLM) and a polarizer which is spliced to a segment of polarization maintaining fiber (PMF) at the angle of 45 degrees with respect to the fast axis of the PMF. The laser can be tuned by adjusting two polarization controllers (PC) in the laser. The tuning range can reach to 6.08nm (1553.92-1560.1nm) with side mode suppression ratio (SMSR) over 38 dB. The stability of the laser is verified at room temperature in one hour, and the power fluctuation of the laser is less than 0.5 dB.

Abstract:Nd3+-doped fiber lasers at around 900 nm based on the F-4(3/2)-> I-4(9/2) transition have obtained much research attention since they can be used as the laser sources for generating pure blue fiber lasers through the frequency doubling. Here, an all-fiber laser at 915 nm was realized by polarization-maintaining Nd3+-doped silica fiber. A net gain per unit length of up to 1.0 dB/cm at 915 nm was obtained from a 4.5 cm fiber, which to our best knowledge is the highest gain coefficient reported in this kind of silica fiber. The optical-to-optical conversion efficiency varies with the active fiber length and the reflectivity of the output fiber Bragg grating (FBG), presenting an optimal value of 5.3% at 5.1 cm fiber length and 70% reflectivity of the low reflection FBG. Additionally, the linear distributed Bragg reflector short cavity was constructed to explore its potential in realizing single-frequency 915 nm fiber laser. The measurement result of longitudinal-mode properties shows it is still multi-longitudinal mode laser operation with 40 mm laser cavity. These results indicate that the Nd3+-doped silica fiber could be used to realize all-fiber laser at 915 nm, which presents potential to be the seed source of high-power fiber laser.

Abstract:A compact erbium-doped ring-shaped fiber laser suitable for fiber-optic sensing applications has been developed. The fiber laser utilized a tunable fiber Fabry–Perot filter as the tuning element and had a moderate milli-Watt level power output over almost the whole tuning range from 1530 to 1595nm with a power fluctuation of 0.15dB. High repetition rate scanning of laser operation over the whole tuning range was achieved at rates of up to 200Hz. Moreover, the performance of the ring-shaped fiber laser configured with a high-concentration erbium-doped fiber was investigated for its larger wavelength tunability of over 100nm. Output power characteristics of this ring-shaped fiber laser were also investigated when it worked in a scanning mode. A distorted power wavelength dependence, as well as some pulsing phenomenon were observed in scanning mode.

Abstract:AbstractA tunable dual- and triple-wavelength passively mode-locked ytterbium-doped fiber laser in the all-normal-dispersion regime is reported and demonstrated. Using a phase-shifted long-period fiber grating as an all-fiber format spectral filter in the laser cavity, a self-starting stabilized multi-wavelength mode-locking operation is achieved by nonlinear polarization evolution. The mode-locked multi-wavelength output can be tuned continuously and smoothly over a spectral range of 10 nm using the phase-shifted long-period fiber grating bandpass filter without re-adjusting any elements in the system. It opens a new possibility to achieve tunable and controllable multi-wavelength mode-locked high-energy laser output in the all-normal-dispersion cavity in an all-fiber format.

Abstract:All-fiber wavelength-tunable fiber laser is a desirable light source architecture in many fields owing to their low cost, compactness and easy integration. However, most of them have independent filter elements and saturated absorption elements, which will undoubtedly increase the redundancy of laser. In this paper, we realize an all-fiber wavelength-tunable Ytterbium (Yb)-doped laser with the tunable central wavelength from 1023 nm to 1076 nm based on fiber loop mirror (FLM). The fiber loop (FLM) fused with two segments of polarization-maintaining fibers (PMF) acts as both a comb filter and a saturable absorber (SA). We believe that lasers with a simple structure and wide wavelength tuning range will have potential applications in sensing, communication, spectroscopy, and medicine.
Efficient three-level continuous-wave and GHz passively mode-locked laser by a Nd3+-doped silicate glass single mode fiber

Abstract:Nd3+-doped three-level (4F3/2-4I9/2) fiber lasers with wavelengths in the range of 850-950 nm are of considerable interest in applications such as bio-medical imaging and blue and ultraviolet laser generation. Although the design of a suitable fiber geometry has enhanced the laser performance by suppressing the competitive four-level (4F3/2-4I11/2) transition at ∼1 µm, efficient operation of Nd3+-doped three-level fiber lasers still remains a challenge. In this study, taking a developed Nd3+-doped silicate glass single-mode fiber as gain medium, we demonstrate efficient three-level continuous-wave lasers and passively mode-locked lasers with a gigahertz (GHz) fundamental repetition rate. The fiber is designed using the rod-in-tube method and has a core diameter of 4 µm with a numerical aperture of 0.14. In a short 4.5-cm-long Nd3+-doped silicate fiber, all-fiber CW lasing in the range of 890 to 915 nm with a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) greater than 49 dB is achieved. Especially, the laser slope efficiency reaches 31.7% at 910 nm. Furthermore, a centimeter-scale ultrashort passively mode-locked laser cavity is constructed and ultrashort pulse at 920 nm with a highest GHz fundamental repetition is successfully demonstrated. Our results confirm that Nd3+-doped silicate fiber could be an alternative gain medium for efficient three-level laser operation.

Abstract:We report the design, optical architecture, and performance of a packaged tunable all polarization-maintaining (PM) Thulium-doped fiber laser (TDFL) with a continuous tuning range of 1890–2050 nm. It consists of a ring-cavity tunable fiber laser source followed with a booster stage which yields output power >3 W and a linewidth of <0.05 nm (4 GHz). Measured performance in terms of output power (up to 3.6 W), output OSNR (47–53 dB/0.1 nm), and long term power stability (<4% p-p) is presented as a function of wavelength over the full 160 nm tuning range. Applications to characterization of passive and active devices and components in the 2 µm band are demonstrated.

Abstract:A stable multiwavelength all-fiber erbium-doped fiber ring laser (EDFRL) based on a broadband long-period fiber grating (LPFG) inscribed in a fiber taper transition is presented. The LPFG’s characteristics were engineered to provide a higher loss at the natural lasing wavelength of the laser cavity. The LPFG inscribed on a taper transition provided a depth greater than 25 dB, and posterior chemical etching provided a broad notch band to inhibit laser generation on the long-wavelength side of the EDF gain. Up to four simultaneous laser wavelengths are generated in the range of 1530–1535 nm.

Abstract:A tunable and switchable six-wavelength erbium-doped fiber ring laser based on a fiber Bragg grating based FP filter (FBG-FPF) and a polarization-maintaining fiber Sagnac loop (PMFSL) is proposed and demonstrated experimentally at room temperature. The FBG-FPF with low insertion loss is used to generate dense multiwavelength output. The PMFSL acts as a comb filter and frequency stabilizer. Through adjusting the squeezed fiber polarization controllers, six kinds of single-wavelength with the tunable range of 11 nm, eleven kinds of dual-wavelength, three kinds of triple-wavelength and one kind of six-wavelength can be obtained and switched with one another. All lasing lines with 3 dB linewidth of less than 0.29 nm and optical signal-to-noise ratio of more than 22 dB locate in the range of C- and L-bands of the optical communication waveband.

Abstract:Here we present a fully fiberized Bi-doped ring laser incorporating a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) operating at a wavelength of 1340nm, which provides 172mW of continuous-wave output power with a slope efficiency of 35%. In addition, we demonstrate a wavelength-tunable version of the laser, which can be tuned from 1320nm to 1370nm by employing a home-made mechanically tunable FBG. Within the whole 50nm tuning band the laser maintains the output power of more than 100mW and the slope efficiency of more than 25%. A maximum output power of ~165mW is achieved over the wavelength range of 1330-1340nm. The linewidth of tunable laser is 0.04nm.

Abstract:Compared with Yb, Nd has potential in 1120 nm fiber lasers, with the characteristics of larger emission cross section and four-level structure. In this work, Nd-doped fiber (NDF) oscillator and Nd-Raman fiber (NRF) oscillator were built using single-mode 5/125 NDF to study the lasing characteristics at 1120 nm, especially the suppression of amplified spontaneous emission at 1060 nm. Limited by the parasitic oscillation at 1060 nm, the NDF oscillator achieved 5 W output at 1120 nm. The NRF oscillator removed the limitation due to the Raman shift from 1064 nm to 1120 nm and obtained an output of 7.7 W at 1120 nm with a spectral peak-to-peak contrast of 36 dB. This work provides experimental basis for the application of NDF in 1.1 μm.

Abstract:We demonstrate a broadband tunable ultra-narrow linewidth single-frequency (SF) Yb-doped fiber laser (YDFL). A dual ring subcavity (DRS) as a filtering component to eliminate the dense longitudinal mode inherent in YDFL and theoretically analyzed its filtering characteristics. By inserting a 0.8 m unpumped polarization-maintaining Yb-doped fiber in the Sagnac ring, a dynamic narrowband grating (DNG) based on the saturable absorption (SA) effect is constructed to ensure SF laser output over the entire wavelength tuning range. We achieve a wide wavelength tunable SF laser output in the range of ∼74 nm, covering 1021.06 nm to 1094.98 nm. The laser has an optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) of more than 62.5 dB, a slope efficiency of 3.57 %, and an ultra-narrow linewidth of 622 Hz over the entire tunable range. In addition, the stability of the wavelength and power fluctuations below 0.018 nm and 0.67 dB, respectively. This tunable SF fiber laser has a compact structure, lower cost, and excellent performance, and is expected to be used in the fields of coherent communications, precision metrology, and so on.

Abstract:Pulsed fiber lasers with high repetition rates play a crucial role in applications such as high-efficiency processing and bio-optical imaging. However, many ring fiber mode-locked lasers primarily focus on shortening the cavity length to achieve high repetition rate pulse output. Attention is often directed towards the gain fiber and cavity structure, with less consideration given to the challenge of increasing mode-locking threshold power. In this study, we present a high-repetition-rate annular all-fiber laser system with dispersion management. Through strategic adjustment of the intracavity dispersion away from the near-zero dispersion region and careful control of the intracavity gain strength, we have successfully lowered the mode-locking threshold power. This approach can generate pulses with a repetition rate of 439.71 MHz and a mode-locking threshold power of approximately 600 mW. Following pulse compression, the achieved pulse width is 94.8 fs. Its time-bandwidth product is 0.368. To our knowledge, this represents the highest fundamental repetition rate currently attained using a ring all-fiber resonator, accompanied by the lowest mode-locking threshold. Our work introduces a ring fiber laser system characterized by a low mode-locking threshold and a high repetition rate, offering a valuable method for achieving higher fundamental repetition rate pulses.

Abstract:A diode laser (LD) clad-pumped narrow linewidth all-fiber Tm3+-doped fiber laser is reported with a maximal output power of 27 W at 1.947μm. By successively splicing an LD pigtail fiber, a single-mode Tm3+-doped fiber, and a multi-mode Tm3+-doped fiber, the fiber laser has 70 pm narrow linewidth output, and a high slope efficiency of nearly 47.5% with respect to the launched pump power. The high reflectivity fiber Bragg gratings, which are directly written into the single-mode Tm3+-doped fiber core by the 800 nm femtosecond pulsed laser, act as the high reflectivity coupler. The output laser has diffraction-limited beam quality with a factor M2 of 1.29, when the output laser power is nearly 27 W.
