Abstract:This paper proposed and experimentally demonstrated an all-fiber tunable and programmable bandpass filter using a linearly chirped fiber Bragg grating (CFBG). The center wavelength and spacing of the transmission peaks could be independently tuned via computer. The tunable range is about 18 nm. With this filter we demonstrated a tunable fiber ring laser which has an output power of about -7 dBm, full-width at half-maximum linewidth of ~0.017 nm which is limited by the resolution of the optical spectrum analyzer (OSA). Furthermore, a spacing tunable dual-wavelength fiber laser was achieved with the same setup. This all-fiber laser features advantages like simple structure, low cost, flexible and digital tuning capability.

Abstract:We demonstrate a tunable erbium-doped fiber ring laser based on an all-fiber filter. The filter consists of an optical circulator, a fiber loop mirror(FLM) and a polarizer which is spliced to a segment of polarization maintaining fiber (PMF) at the angle of 45 degrees with respect to the fast axis of the PMF. The laser can be tuned by adjusting two polarization controllers (PC) in the laser. The tuning range can reach to 6.08nm (1553.92-1560.1nm) with side mode suppression ratio (SMSR) over 38 dB. The stability of the laser is verified at room temperature in one hour, and the power fluctuation of the laser is less than 0.5 dB.

Abstract:A novel erbium-doped fiber ring laser employing an all-polarization-maintaining fiber birefringent loop as a periodic filter is proposed and demonstrated. The laser using 1 nm interval filter generates four wavelengths with equal frequency spacing without using any techniques to overcome the homogeneous line broadening of the gain medium at room temperature. Room-temperature operation of dual-wavelengths with 0.56 nm spacing has also been realized.

Abstract:Tunable fiber lasers are a promising light source in all-optical wavelength conversion, fiber grating sensing and optical add-drop multiplexing. In order to achieve a tunable wavelength in the output, optical filters are indispensable for the construction of tunable fiber lasers. Recently, much attention has been given to developing high-performance filters. This paper proposes an environment-insensitive filter based on a Sagnac interferometer which was designed by an all-polarization-maintaining fiber with linear birefringence. According to the Sagnac interferometer, we derived the transfer function of an environment-insensitive filter. Based on this principle, it is shown that the device is able to implement a precision filtering function that can be used in a fiber laser's optical resonant cavity. The experiment results demonstrated the effectiveness of this structure.

Abstract:A tunable and switchable six-wavelength erbium-doped fiber ring laser based on a fiber Bragg grating based FP filter (FBG-FPF) and a polarization-maintaining fiber Sagnac loop (PMFSL) is proposed and demonstrated experimentally at room temperature. The FBG-FPF with low insertion loss is used to generate dense multiwavelength output. The PMFSL acts as a comb filter and frequency stabilizer. Through adjusting the squeezed fiber polarization controllers, six kinds of single-wavelength with the tunable range of 11 nm, eleven kinds of dual-wavelength, three kinds of triple-wavelength and one kind of six-wavelength can be obtained and switched with one another. All lasing lines with 3 dB linewidth of less than 0.29 nm and optical signal-to-noise ratio of more than 22 dB locate in the range of C- and L-bands of the optical communication waveband.

Abstract:We present an ytterbium-doped all-fiber all-normal-dispersion laser with a Sagnac filter. The Sagnac filter facilitates the all-fiber configuration without bulk filtering components. In addition, the bandwidth, central wavelength, and modulation depth can be tuned easily by controlling the length of the polarization-maintaining (PM) fiber and polarization controllers in the Sagnac loop. All these properties are independent of the polarization state of the pulses. Stable mode-locked pulses are obtained in this laser with a pulse energy of 3.5 nJ.

Abstract:A widely tunable single-longitudinal-mode (SLM) ytterbium-doped fiber laser is experimentally demonstrated, which is achieved by combining a fiber Lyot filter and a saturable absorber in a ring cavity. Stable SLM operation from 1045 nm to 1076 nm is obtained by properly adjusting the polarization state. The output power reaches 7.5 dBm with a fluctuation of less than 2 dB. The optical signal-to-noise ratio is 42.5 dB with a fluctuation of less than 6 dB in this wavelength range.

Abstract:A Fabry-Perot filter is realized by inscribing two identical I mm uniform Bragg gratings separated by 7.7 mm space in the hydrogen-loaded photosensitive optical fiber. It is then incorporated with a tunable chirped fiber Bragg grating into a fiber ring cavity. Fourteen single-wavelength lasings from 1552.186 am to 1553.453 nm with average 97.5 pm spacing, and 13 pairs of dual-wavelength lasings within the above wavelength range are achieved stably. This kind of laser will be very useful in applications requiring close-spacing and tunable single- or dual-wavelength components and systems. (C) 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract:We have demonstrated a simple method to achieve a high-power single-longitudinal-mode all-fiber ring laser by employing two Sagnac loop filters. In the ring cavity, a high-birefringence Sagnac loop filter is incorporated to limit the affiliated longitudinal modes, and another Sagnac loop filter with unpumped erbium-doped fiber serves as a saturable absorber to ensure single-longitudinal-mode operation. Abstract:A filter based on a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) formed by cascading a pair of longperiod fiber gratings (LPFGs) written by CO2 laser in a twisted single-mode fiber is proposed. The transmission spectrum of the filter is tuned by modifying the bending curvature of the MZI, and thus wavelength tuning is achieved. And a tunable erbium-doped fiber (EDF) ring laser employing the filter as a wavelengthselection component is experimentally demonstrated. The laser can be tuned continuously from 1573.05 to 1595.75 nm with a side-mode suppression ration of ∼50 dB over the total tuning range.

Abstract:A tunable and switchable multi-wavelength erbium-doped fiber ring laser based on a new type tunable comb filter is proposed and demonstrated. By adjusting the polarization controllers, dual-function operation of the channel spacing tunability and the wavelength switching (interleaving) can be readily achieved. Up to 29 stable lasing lines with 0.4 nm spacing and 14 lasing wavelengths with 0.8 nm spacing in 3 dB bandwidth were obtained at room temperature. In addition, the lasing output, including the number of the lasing lines, the lasing evenness and the lasing locations, can also be flexibly adjusted through the wavelength-dependent polarization rotation mechanism.

Abstract:In this paper, a tunable fiber feedback laser based on the use of Sagnac loop filter and fiber Bragg grating (FBG) is proposed. The Sagnac loop filter using a high birefringence fiber provides precise 0.33-nm channel spacing as a multi-wavelength grid filter. Ni-Cr wire wound on the FBG is useful to induce the thermo-optic effect of the fiber. Two types of FBG structures, which have a different length of wire, are demonstrated to show the wavelength shift and separation. To tune FBG by resistant heat, some current is supplied into the wire. When the wavelength matched with one of the cavity modes of Sagnac loop filter, the mode-locked lasing is occurred. The electrical power sensitivity of the resonant wavelength is measured to 1.75pm/mW. This laser configuration can be applied the electrical power system for monitoring the power fluctuation.

Abstract:An all-normal dispersion tunable mode-locked fiber laser with a nonlinear amplifying loop mirror is experimentally investigated. The laser employs an all-polarization-maintaining figure-8 cavity consisted of main loop and nonlinear amplifying loop mirror. At 1030 nm, the stable mode-locked laser is initiated by adjusting two loops' pump power, which delivers pulse width of 17.61 ps, repetition frequency of 4.133 MHz, and average power of 2.151 mW. A tunable filter is employed in the cavity to select the laser wavelength as well as force the laser operating in all-normal dispersion dissipative regime. The wavelength tuning range is 1015-1080 nm while the pulse duration ranges from 7.86 ps to 17.80 ps.

Abstract:We have demonstrated a switchable dual wavelength fiber ring laser with a high degree of polarization output by using an intracavity 3-stage all fiber Lyot filter. The filter is formed by concatenating four 45° tilted fiber gratings separated by polarization maintaining fibers with a length ratio of 1:2:4 (20, 40, and 80 cm), giving a compact integrated configuration with reduced bandwidth. Switchable dual wavelength or single wavelength output at 1533.5 and 1563.3 nm has been achieved. The output lasing is considerably stable owing to the in-phase mode-selecting function of the multistage Lyot filter, and has a very high degree of polarization higher than 99.9%.

Abstract:A broadband tunable, single-longitudinal-mode (SLM) Ytterbium fiber laser with unpumped Ytterbium-doped Sagnac loop is proposed and demonstrated experimentally. The unpumped Ytterbium-doped Sagnac loop is employed as a saturable absorber based auto-tracking filter to ensure single-longitudinal-mode oscillation. And a tunable band pass optical filter with large tuning range is applied to achieve broadband tuning ability. With 1-m Ytterbium-doped fiber as the gain medium, the SLM operation is achieved with over 60-nm wavelength tuning range at 160-mW pump power. The laser is very stable with output power of about 3dBm and optical signal to noise ratio of higher than 50dB in all the 60-nm tuning range.

Abstract:A multi-wavelength switchable C-band erbium-doped fiber laser based on a hybrid comb filter composed of a Sagnac loop and Mach–Zehnder interferometer (MZI) is designed and experimentally demonstrated. In the designed ring cavity fiber laser, the MZI is composed of bi-tapered single-mode fiber fabricated by etching with hydrofluoric acid. In the experiment, the wavelength intervals in the comb spectra of the Sagnac loop and MZI are 3.4 and 18.8 nm, respectively, and by combining the Sagnac loop and MZI, measurements of the hybrid comb spectrum are obtained. When the pump power is 91 mW, lasing occurs at 1529.2 nm. Adjustment of the variable attenuator (VA) can provide 1541.9 and 1558.6 nm single-wavelength switchable lasers, for which the maximum peak power difference is less than 3.59 dB, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) exceeds 19.25 dB, and the peak power fluctuation is less than 0.34 dB over a 30 min scan time at 26 °C. For dual-wavelength switchable laser emission, four different sets of wavelengths can be realized, and the SNR exceeds 15.57 dB with power fluctuations of less than 1.6 dB, under the same monitoring conditions. By further adjusting the VA, stable and tunable triple-wavelength lasing is also realizable; under these conditions, the SNR exceeds 15.02 dB and the power fluctuation is less than 0.91 dB. Furthermore, four- and five-wavelength lasing can also be achieved by adjusting the VA again, with SNRs exceeding 19.05 and 14.98 dB, respectively.

A Study on the New Hybrided Optical Filter for Wavelength Tunable Fiber Ring Laser

Abstract:In this paper, we proposed the new wavelength tunable filter for wide tunability of fiber ring laser. The proposed filter consists of the cascaded connection of Fiber Reflection Mach-Zehnder Interferometer and Sagnac filter or of hybrid filter and fiber Reflection Mach-Zehnder Interferometer. The simulation shows that the continuous tunable range of 50nm can be obtained and that more stable single mode operation of ring laser can be expected due to narrow FWHM. of filter spectrum.

Abstract:A wavelength tunable linear cavity erbium-doped fiber (EDF) laser based on Sagnac loop incorporating with polarization-maintaining photonic crystal fiber (PM-PCF) was proposed and demonstrated experimentally. The Sagnac loop was composed of 0.5 m length PM-PCF, 1 × 2 optical coupler with 50:50 splitting ratio, and one polarization controller (PC). For the proposed fiber laser, the working threshold was 35 mW, the 3 m length EDF was used as gain medium, and 0.5 m length EDF was selected as saturable absorber to improve lasers stability. In the experiment, the comb filter effect was generated by Sagnac interferometer, and period was 2.52 nm. When the pump power was 150 mW, single-wavelength tunable laser output was realized within the range of 1528.73–1531.45 nm through adjusting PC, wavelength tuning interval was more than 0.58 nm, power difference was less than 3.681 dB, and signal to noise ratio (SNR) were higher than 31.101 dB. For the designed fiber laser, different groups of dual- and triple-wavelength lasers output were obtained, the power difference was lower than 7.349 and 7.724 dB, and SNR was more than 31.752 and 38.623 respectively. The single-, dual- and triple-wavelength laser stability was test within 20 min, and power and wavelength fluctuation were 3.325 dB and 0.07 nm respectively.
