Abstract:Carbon tubules are used to assemble Co3C or Co particles from an agglomerate into a straight line. The walls of the carbon tubules are grown by the slow catalytic decomposition of a fluorocarbon at 375 degreesC over the Co3C or Co particles. The nanoparticles then merge via oriented attachment to form nanowires. Depending on the nanoparticle material, nanowires of up to 1 mum long can be formed. Using atomic resolution electron microscopy images, the formed nanowires are seen to be of the same material as the initial nanoparticles.

Abstract:A facile method was proposed to use Ni/Al2O3 as a catalyst to produce metallic nickel filled carbon nanotubes. Multi-walled carbon nanotubes filled with long continuous nickel nanowire length were synthesized through chemical vapor deposition at low temperature (600°C). Furthermore, the multi-walled carbon nanotubes were well-graphitized nanotubes. The analysis of scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, selected area electron diffraction and X-ray diffraction revealed that the metallic nickel nanowires encapsulated inside carbon nanotubes existed as a single crystalline with fcc structure.

Abstract:Nickel nanoparticles were prepared and uniformly supported on multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) by reduction route with CNTs as a reducing agent at 600 degrees C. As-prepared nickel nanoparticles were single crystalline with a face-center-cubic phase and a size distribution ranging from 10 to 50 nm, and they were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution TEM and X-ray diffraction (XRD). These nickel nanoparticles would be coated with graphene layers. when they were exposed to acetylene at 600 degrees C. Abstract:Three types of carbon nanomaterials, including bamboo-shaped carbon nanotubes with Ni encapsulated and hollow and Ni catalytic particles filled carbon nanocages, have been prepared by methane catalytic decomposition at a relatively low temperature. Transmission electron microscopy observations showed that fascinating fullerene-like Ni–C (graphitic) core–shell nanostructures predominated. Detailed examination of high-resolution transmission electron microscopy showed that the walls of bamboo-shaped carbon nanotubes with quasi-cone catalytic particles encapsulated consisted of oblique graphene planes with respect to the tube axis. The Ni particles encapsulated in the carbon nanocages were larger than that encapsulated in carbon nanotubes, but the diameters of the cores of hollow carbon nanocages were less than that of Ni particles encapsulated in carbon nanotubes, suggesting that the sizes of catalyst particles played an important role during carbon nanomaterial growth. The magnetic properties of the carbon nanomaterials were measured, which showed relatively large coercive force (Hc=138.4Oe) and good ferromagnetism (Mr/Ms=0.325).

Abstract:A facile method is proposed to use LaNi2 hydrogen storage alloy as a catalyst precursor to produce metallic nickel filled carbon nanotubes. Multi-walled carbon nanotubes filled with long continuous nickel nanowire with several microns in length are synthesized through chemical vapor deposition at low temperature (550 °C). It is more efficient to fill Ni nanowires into nanotubes after the oxidation treatment of LaNi2 alloy at low temperatures, while the oxidation treatment at high temperature results in the forming of herringbone carbon nanofibers with tips of Ni nanoparticles. The metallic Ni nanowires inside the cores of carbon nanotubes could not be eliminated during the purification process in concentrated hydrochloric acid. The analysis of transmission electron microscopy (TEM), selected area electron diffraction (SAED) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) reveals that the metallic nickel nanowires filled inside carbon nanotubes exist as a single crystalline with fcc structure.

Abstract:Mesoporous carbon materials with ultra-thin carbon pore walls and highly dispersed Ni nanoparticles have been successfully prepared by using two different SBA-15 silicas as hard templates and 2,3-dihydroxynaphthalene (DHN) as a carbon precursor. The nickel precursor was a concentrated nickel nitrate hexahydrate [Ni(NO3)(2)center dot 6H(2)O] solution in 2-propanol, which was added to the carbon-silica nanocomposite prior to thermal treatment. The samples studied were analyzed by thermogravimetry (TG), nitrogen adsorption at -196 degrees C, powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, scanning and transmission electron microscopy (STEM), and in situ electron diffraction X-ray spectroscopy (EDX). While TG analysis revealed carbon contents lower than 30 wt.-%, nitrogen adsorption provided information about the homogeneity of the carbon thin film deposited onto the mesopore walls of the ordered silica templates SBA-15. The templates, carbon-silica nanocomposites, and carbon inverse replicas with nickel nanoparticles exhibit uniform pores, high surface areas, and large pore volumes. Partially graphitic carbon was identified by the presence of a characteristic G band in the Raman spectra, whereas the diffraction peak attributed to the stacking of graphene planes was not observed by powder XRD. The presence of ordered domains in the carbon materials studied was confirmed by small angle XRD and STEM imaging. In addition, the STEM images revealed that the nickel nanoparticles are uniform in size, ca. 3 nm, and are homogeneously dispersed on the tubular carbon walls. A few larger clusters of nickel, ca. 60 nm, present on the external surface, were identified by powder XRD as metallic Ni. The in situ EDX revealed that the small nanoparticles are largely composed of Ni with traces of NiO. Similar nanoparticle dispersions have been reported only for Ni-containing multiwalled carbon nanotubes (CNTs), whereas previously reported ordered mesoporous carbon materials, CMK-3, possess larger Ni/NiO nanoparticles. Abstract:The Ni nano-particles were generated by means of a sol-gel combined hydrogen reduction method.The helical carbon nanotubes(HCNTs) with high helicity and symmetric structure were synthesized in acetylene pyrolysis at 425 ℃ using the Ni nano-particles as the catalyst.The results show that this method is simple and environmentally friendly with low-cost,and is an ideal candidate for the mass production of HCNTs with high purity.The field-emission scanning electron microscope(FE-SEM) and high-resolution transmission electron microscope(HR-TEM) images show that there are often two nanotubes with the hollow tubular structure and opposite rotating directions in one catalyst nanoparticle.The XRD and Raman results reveal that the composites of the as-prepared sample are graphite with defect and polycrystalline Ni without impurity phase.Moreover,the magnetism and microwave absorption properties of the as-prepared sample were investigated.

Abstract:The novel specific structure of carbon nanotubers (CNTs) and the fascinating heterostructure of carbon nanotubers/metal nanostructure continue to attract attention for potential application and development in science and technology fields. Here, a special structure of CNTs (with small pits or holes on its walls) was fabricated by the combination of adorning the channel of anode alumina oxide (AAO) by electrochemical depositing metal Ag and growing of CNTs by chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and their structures details were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The formation mechanism of this novel structure and its possible potential application are suggested. Furthermore, on the basis of this work, a novel heterostructure of Pt particles and carbon nanotubers was synthesized via similar approach. Regarding the latter, the approach presented here could be further extended to fabricate carbon nanotubes/other metal nanostructures.

Abstract:Aligned arrays of N 2 -encapsulated multilevel branched carbon nanotubes were synthesized using a simple one step CVD method by pyrolysis of ferrocene and acetonitrile. Electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) and elemental mapping studies reveal that gaseous nitrogen was encapsulated in the carbon nanotubes. Batch-type pyrolysis of catalysts induced flow fluctuation of the reaction gases, resulting in the growth of branched junctions. Molecular nitrogen extruded rapidly along conical catalyst particles inducing N 2 encapsulation inside the branched nanotubes.

Abstract:A variety of structural and morphological forms of carbon nanofibers, which comprise perpendicularly and obliquely stacking graphite fibers and the two composite forms made of outer coaxial graphite tubes and inner perpendicularly or obliquely stacking fibers, were fabricated in catalytically decomposing propylene–hydrogen mixture over carbon nanotube-supported nickel catalysts. The growth mechanism for composite carbon nanofibers was proposed. The different types of carbon filaments are promising to be applied in catalyst support and capsules for drug delivery or nanoscale electrical devices.
Hydrogen Bubble-Directed Tubular Structure: A Novel Mechanism to Facilely Synthesize Nanotube Arrays with Controllable Wall Thickness

Abstract:Nanowire arrays can be conveniently fabricated by electrodeposition methods using porous anodized alumina oxide templates. They have found applications in numerous fields. Nanotube arrays, with their hollow structure and much enhanced surface-to-volume ratio, as well as an additional tuning parameter in tube wall thickness, promise additional functions compared with nanowire arrays. Using a similar fabrication method, we have developed a facile and general method to fabricate metallic nanotubes (NTs). Using Ni NTs as a model system, the mechanism of the hydrogen-assisted NT growth was postulated and confirmed by controlling the hydrogen formation with conductive salts in an electrodeposition solution, which improves the H<sub>2</sub> concentration but prevents the large H<sub>2</sub> bubbles from blocking the nanochannel of a template. The controlled hydrogen generation forces the growth along the wall of nanochannels in the templates, leading to the NT formation. Abstract:A method to fabricate one dimensional nanoscale composite based on coating of carbon nanotube with metal is proposed and demonstrated in this letter. Carbon nanotubes have been coated with a layer of nickel by electroless plating. It was found that the nickel coating had a tendency to form as nanoparticles on the surface of carbon nanotube and on the net of carbon nanotubes. High density active sites and low deposition rate were found to be critical for getting better coating.

Abstract:Al-based anodic porous alumina membranes with ordered nanopore arrays are fabricated for exploring the template synthesis of carbon nanotubes and nanowires. Via the polymerization of acrylonitrile in the ordered nanopores of the membranes and subsequent heating, the polymer structure was converted into a quasi-graphitic structure. Atomic force microscopy observations revealed that the quasi-graphitic nanostructures are located in the pores of the porous alumina membrane, displaying a hexagonal symmetry. Raman scattering investigation confirmed the formation of carbon nanotubes in the nanopores. With further mild, controlled treatment in aqueous alkali and acidic solution, individual alumina nanotubes (ANTs) coaxially wrapping the carbon nanotubes and nanowires are obtained, as evidenced by transmission electron microscopy observations.

Abstract:The synthesis of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) from ethylene decomposition by Fe/Al2O3 and Fe/Ni/Al2O3 catalysts (Fe:Ni=10:1) is studied. A small amount of nickel introduced into the catalyst can significantly increase the yield of CNTs, but the nanotubes change from straight tubes with concentric parallel carbon sheets to helical tubes of the fish-bone type. Raman characterization of CNTs prepared at 823 and 1023 K and CNTs annealed at 2473 K shows that CNTs deposited on the Fe/Ni/Al2O3 catalyst have poor crystallinity, as compared with that on the Fe/Al2O3 catalyst. These differences are explained by a mechanism of formation of helical tubes of the fish bone type that takes into consideration the differences in the chemical nature of the catalyst with and without nickel.

Abstract:One-dimensional carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have a unique tubular structure and excellent electrical, optical, thermal and mechanical properties. Meanwhile, zero-dimensional noble metal nanoparticles (NMNPs) also exhibit unique optical, electrical, magnetic and catalytic properties. Combined these two nanomaterials together through supporting metal nanoparticles on the surface of CNTs, a new kind of nano-hybrid of metal and nonmetal are created, this nano-hybrid can not only possess their intrinsic outstanding performance, but also give birth to some extraordinary characteristics, significantly having potential applications in the fields of chemical catalysis, hydrogen storage, direct alcohol fuel cells, electronic devices and bio-sensors. In this review, the suggested methods about the decoration of NMNPs on CNTs are generally discussed, primarily including the covalent modification and non-covalent modification. In particular, the techniques about the functionalization of carbon nanotubes with the natural polymer (such as DNA, polypeptides, polysaccharides and DNA) are additionally introduced, and the functionalized polymers will not only improve the biocompatibility and the water dispersion of CNTs, but also effectively increase the loading of NMNPs on nanotubes. Therefore, the as-prepared CNTs/NMNPs nano-hybrids have obvious advantages for some biological applications such as drug delivery, bio-sensors, immobilization and separation of proteins and cancer diagnosis or treatment.

Abstract:Multi-walled carbon nanotubes were decorated with nickel cations after nitric acid oxidization and the resultant product was calcined in an inert atmosphere. The samples were characterized by transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. The nickel oxide nanoparticles were initially dispersed on the external surfaces of carbon nanotubes. Continuous calcination in an inert atmosphere caused the reduction of nickel oxide nanocrystals to metallic nickel nanoparticles, where carbon nanotubes functioned as reducing agent. The metallic nickel nanoparticles were deposited on the surface of nanotubes and they could be used as catalyst in homogeneous or heterogeneous reactions.

Abstract:Perfect boron nitride (BN) nanotubes are chemically inert, and hardly considered as catalysts. Nevertheless, metal wire encapsulated BN nanotubes show extraordinarily high chemical activity. We report nickel (Ni) nanowire encapsulated BN(8.0) and BN(9.0) nanotubes toward O2 activation and CO oxidization on the basis of first-principles calculations. Our results suggest that Ni wire encapsulated BN(8.0) and BN(9.0) nanotubes can easily adsorb and activate O2 molecules to form peroxo or superoxo species exothermically. Meanwhile, superoxo species are ready to react with CO molecules forming OCOO intermediate state and finally yielding CO2 molecules. Meanwhile, the rate-limiting step barrier is only 0.637 eV, implying excellent performance for CO oxidation on Ni nanowire encapsulated BN nanotubes. Furthermore, encapsulation of nickel wire improves the catalytic activity of BN nanotubes by facilitating electron transfer from Ni wire to BN nanotubes, which facilitates the adsorption of highly electronegative O2 molecules and subsequent CO oxidation. This study provides a practical and efficient strategy for activating O2 on a metal encapsulated BN nanotube toward CO oxidation.

The nanotubes are assembled by rolling the (111) sheets of [Ni(NH3)6]Cl2 with the assistance of a polymer.
