Abstract:The development and its mechanical performances of new type air-cooled Mn-series bainitic steels including granular bainitic steels, F-GBA/B-G duplex steels, CFB/M duplex steels, medium carbon bainite/martensite steels, cast bainitic steels invented by the authors are summarized. The novel series of bainitic steels are alloyed with Mn and several series bainitic duplex microstructures can be easily obtained under the condition of air cooling through unique composition design. The invented idea, principle of alloying design, strengthening mechanism and the evolution of the microstructure of new type air-cooled Mn-series bainitic steels are presented in this paper. Furthermore, the application in different fields of these Mn-series air-cooled bainitic steels with different strength level are also introduced. It is suggested that the significance of the development of the air cooled Mn-series bainite steel can be summarized as: reducing costs of both raw materials and production; good combination of strength and toughness; self-hardened with high bainitic hardenability by air cooling from hot working without additional quenching-tempering treatment or quenching procedure; large savings in energy resources; environmental pollution is reduced.

Abstract:The origin and development of air-cooled Mn-series bainite steels are introduced. The water quenched Mn-series bainitic steels can meet the performance requirements of most steels used in engineering structure, reduce the amount of alloying content, increase harden capability and improve weldability. It should be pointed out that the application of both air-cold and water- quenched Mn-series bainitic steels are complementary and mutually reinforcing. Some newest technology of Mn-series bainitic steels in China are discussed in this paper. It is suggested that the significance of the development of the Mn-series bainitic steels can be summarized as: significantly reducing costs of both raw materials and production; good combination of strength and toughness; excellent weldability; simple procedure; large savings in energy resources and environmental pollution is reduced.

Abstract:Aiming at producing high performance, low cost, resource-saving, energy-saving and environment-friendly materials,taking LCB , F/B , CFB/M as typical products, on the basis of introduced achievements, researchers of Special Steel Branch have studied and applied technologies, such as microalloying, nano-precipitation, etc. to solve the problems of bainitic steel long product structure's refinement and toughening in actual production. Through setting up and perfecting the exclusive industrial art of the whole process from melting, casting, rolling and forging to treatment of finished-parts , defects like cracks of hypoperitectic in continuous casting can be eliminated, inferior products can be prevented, materials' strength-plasticity-toughness can be improved and stabled. Air-cooled bainitic steel long products of Mn series have been industrialized and supplied massively for transportation , energy, military and other sectors.

Abstract:An air‐cooled low‐carbon Mn–Si–Cr alloyed steel with carbide‐free bainite/martensite (CFB/M) multiphase exhibits an optimum combination of strength, ductility, and toughness. The refined CFB/M multiphase and film‐like retained austenite can hinder crack propagation and improve the impact toughness of the air‐cooled CFB/M multiphase steel. An air‐cooled low‐carbon Mn–Si–Cr alloyed steel with multiphase microstructure of carbide‐free bainite/martensite (CFB/M) is developed. The kinetics of bainitic transformation during air‐cooling process is discussed via considering the transformation latent heat with help of the measured temperature‐cooling curves. Results show that the CFB formed during air cooling can effectively refine the multiphase microstructure and stabilize the film‐like retained austenite that contributes to transformation‐induced plasticity effect upon deformation. An optimum combination of strength, ductility, and toughness of the air‐cooled bainitic steel is achieved (tensile strength: 1418 MPa, total elongation: 15.8%, and Charpy V‐notch impact energy: ≈71 J). The newly developed Mn–Si–Cr alloyed air‐cooled bainitic steel exhibits superior mechanical properties to the commercial 23CrNi3Mo steel but has a much lower alloy cost.

Abstract:Multiphase microstructure with carbide-free bainite, martensite and a small amount of film-like retained austenite was obtained in a new Mn-Si-Cr-C steel, designed to promote bainite transformation. The microstructural constituents were studied by a combination of electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction, dilatometry and high temperature laser confocal microscopy. A critical analysis of experimental data and theoretical analysis underscored that the austenite stability is enhanced by bainitic transformation, during quenching and partitioning process, besides carbon partitioning. The nucleation of bainite divided the untransformed austenite and refined the grain size of retained austenite, benefiting the mechanical properties, especially low temperature toughness.

Abstract:In this paper,the Cr-Mo-Nb alloy cast steel's microstructure and mechanical properties are researched,after manganese instead of the valuable elements nickel and part of molybdenum in the alloy steel.The results show that the microstructure of alternative materials was refined,impact toughness and dynamic impact of anti-abrasion performance were improved,and the alloy steel cost was dropped.

Abstract:Over the past decades, intensive efforts have been dedicated to overcoming the strength-ductility trade-off dilemma of advanced high-strength steels by creating multi-phase microstructures with chemical heterogeneity. This paper presents a brief summary of the advancements in medium Mn steel (MMnS), which has garnered prominence in automobile applications due to its high strength coupled with good toughness achieved via the modulation of retained austenite ( γ ret ) stability. We examine the optimization of integral mechanical attributes such as strength, ductility and toughness. MMnS can reach an ultimate tensile strength (UTS) beyond 2200 MPa; however, there is a steep decline in toughness below 100 J when the UTS is > 1200 MPa. The relevant mechanisms including novel alloying design strategies, innovative processing routines such as flash processing, chemical boundary engineering and meticulous modulation of γ stability through chemical heterogeneity are analyzed. Furthermore, the potential avenues for research and innovation in MMnS are outlined by incorporating laser additive manufacturing technologies.

Abstract:The effects of Mn on the microstructure and impact-abrasion wear resistance of bainitic steel were studied. Results showed that the Mn-containing steel possessed finer microstructure and higher volume fraction of retained austenite, in comparison with the Mn-free steel. This was caused by lower transformation temperature and higher strength of undercooled austenite. The weight loss of Mn-free steel varying with the impact load was larger than that of Mn-containing steel. High strength, hardness and toughness of Mn-containing steel were conducive to improving wear resistance. More retained austenite in Mn-containing steel played an active role in work hardening and hindering crack propagation. However, the portion of retained austenite that induced martensitic transformation was the same with increasing impact-wear load.

Abstract:Carbide-free bainitic steels alloyed with different Mn content (0,1.8, 2.3 and 3.2wt%) was isothermal transformation treated at (Ms+10 ) ℃, and continuous cooling transformation treated at ( Ms+10)-( Ms-20 ) ℃.Effects of Mn content on microstructure and properties of the steels were investigated by metallography , XRD, TEM and EBSD.The results show that the mixed microstructure obtained after transformation close to Ms temperature in Mn-free steel consists of bainite ferrite , retained austenite , and grain boundary allotriomorphic ferrite.The transformation of Mn containing steel near the Ms temperature results in lower bainite , consisting of lath bainite ferrite and flaky residual austenite .With the Mn content increasing , the change of volume fraction of retained austenite is smaller , bainite strength increases and plasticity decreases .The tested steel with 2.3%Mn exhibits the highest comprehensive performance .

Abstract:A 35MnSiCrNiAlMo bainitic steel whose mechanical properties approached those of 140-maraging steel was developed. The steel was continuously cooled from a temperature slightly higher than its martensite start temperature (Ms) to Ms - 20 degrees C at a cooling rate of 0.5 degrees C min(-1), after which the overall mechanical properties are better than those of austempered samples at any constant temperature. Mixed microstructures consisting of fine plates of carbide-free bainitic ferrite and thin films of retained austenite were obtained. (C) 2013 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:The effect of high-temperature annealing pretreatment above Ac cm on the evolution of bainitic austempering microstructure in Fe – 0.95C – 1.37Si – 1.04Cr – 0.44Mn (wt.%) steel is investigated by differential thermal analysis, x-ray diffraction and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. It is found that a novel nanobainite with a needle-like morphology forms in the experimental steel under conventional bainitic austempering after annealing pretreatment at 950°C. A thin film crystal of the novel nanobainite with a thickness as small as 50 nm has a body-centered cubic lattice, in which the opposite stacking fault is the main crystal defect. The interface of the novel nanobainite crystal is composed of both coherent and non-coherent areas. The steel containing the novel nanobainite structure has a higher hardness than that with conventional bainite.

Abstract:Nature has long inspired technological innovations, fostering the rapidly developing field of bionics. Inspired by the microstructure of bamboo, we have developed a bamboo-like structure for steel. This novel steel achieves a tensile strength exceeding 1200 MPa and a uniform elongation nearing 68%, resulting in a product of strength and uniform elongation up to 83 GPa·%. The high strength of the steel is primarily attributed to its ultra-fine lamellar grains. Additionally, the graded occurrence of multiple deformation mechanisms collectively maintains its exceptional work-hardening capability. This study presents a new approach to enhancing the performance of medium-Mn steels. A bamboo-like steel consisting of lamellar ferrite and austenite alternating along the rolling direction, providing a new path to produce medium-Mn steels with outstanding mechanical properties.

Abstract:The present work proposes a new industry-friendly approach for developing lightweight yet high-performance medium Mn steel by partial austenitization. The medium Mn steel subjected to partial austenitization exhibits remarkably refined microstructure. Particularly, the retained austenite has heterogeneous microstructure in various sizes and morphologies. Such multi-scale austenite yields a sustainable TRIP effect during deformation, achieving a superior strength–ductility combination up to 60 GPa pct.

Abstract:Medium-manganese (Mn) steel (MMS) has remarkable characteristics of high strength, strong work-hardening capacity, and wear resistance, being a promising third-generation advanced high-strength steel with lower raw material cost compared with other generations of advanced high-strength steel. The chemical composition and processing route play critical roles in determining the microstructural evolution of the MMS, and the microstructure composition significantly influences the mechanical, corrosion and wear properties of the steel. Hence, a lot of research work focus on exploring the direct relation between microstructural evolution and mechanical/corrosion/wear properties, and the progress has the following crucial aspects: (1) alloying design on the phase composition and carbide precipitation, (2) processing route on regulating microstructure evolution and twinning-induced plasticity and/or transformation-induced plasticity strengthening mechanism, (3) work-hardening, corrosion, and corrosion resistance of the regulated MMS, and (4) fracture and failure mechanism of MMS under tensile, corrosion and wear damages, as well as the improvement strategies.

Abstract:Micro/nano-structured bainitic steels have a unique combination of ultra-high strength and high ductility due to their ultrafine structure consisting of bainitic-ferrite and retained austenite.It has become an important scientific and technical problem that how to refine the block retained austenite and increase the content of film-like retained austenite to achieve fine microstructure and excellent ductility and toughness.In this paper,the effects of alloying elements and heat treatment processes on bainite transformation and the formation and morphology of retained austenite are reviewed.Plastic toughening mechanism of residual austenite in ultra-high strength and toughness of bainitic steel is analyzed,and thus for the development of ultra-high strength and high toughness bainitic steel.

Abstract:Many experimental and calculation results for bainite transformation in steels have been obtained by diffusional and displacive mechanism holders recently. The arguments of the two viewpoints mainly focus on following aspects: partition of carbon and substitutional atoms in the process of bainite transformation, nucleation and overall kinetics, morphology and crystallography. The new results of bainite transformation in steels are summarized and analyzed briefly. It is suggested that bainite transformation mechanism may relate to following factors: alloy composition and isothermal holding temperature. More attention should be focused on the effects of transformation temperature and alloy composition on bainite transformation mechanism.
