Abstract:This paper conducts an experimental study on the mechanical properties of less-tightened high-strength bolted connections composed of 8 bolts under the action of double shear. 63 groups of connections were tested in the experiment, of which 60 groups were tested in different percentage reduction of clamping force and the other three groups were tested with standard clamping force as control groups. The effects of the percentage reduction of clamping force of less-tightened bolts, the number of less-tightened bolts, and the thickness of core plate on the bearing behavior of bolted connections were analyzed. The effects of the three parameters on the failure mode, strain distribution, slip resistance, ultimate bearing capacity, ductility, and initial stiffness of bolted connections are studied. As can be seen from the failure mode, all specimens showed bolt damage, which was cut off on one side and twisted on the other side. The test results revealed that the decrease of clamping force exerts a negative impact on the slip resistance, and the ultimate bearing capacity of less-tightened bolted connections. These capacities of the specimens are reduced significantly with the increase of the percentage reduction of clamping force and the number of less-tightened bolts, while the thickness of the core plate has slight effect on these performances. In addition, with the decrease of the clamping force, the ductility of the specimen increases, while the increase of the thickness of the core plate will decrease the ductility of the specimen. Further, the influence of these factors on the initial stiffness of the specimens can't be ignored. By comparing with specifications, the modified formula of ultimate bearing capacity of bolted connections with reduced clamping force is put forward.

Abstract:High-strength bolted connections have attracted increasing attention over the past few decades because they can safely transfer the design load. However, the effect of the preload loss on the mechanical behavior of the bolted connections has not been investigated sufficiently, This paper presents an experimental investigation of the bearing capacity of high-strength bolted connections with loose bolts (lacking pretension force). The tests investigated ninety specimens with loose bolts and six specimens without loose bolts for comparison. The results showed that bolt fracture was the only failure mode for all of the tested connections under uniaxial tension. The global behavior of the tested connections exhibited four stages, and the features of each stage were summarized. The connections with different tightening conditions exhibited a similar trend in terms of strain development around the bolt holes. The effect of the slip coefficient, position and number of loose bolts, and the plate thickness is elucidated through parametric studies. It is found that the yield load of high-strength bolted connections may be affected by the pretension force and the slip coefficient, while the effect of the slip coefficient gradually decreases with the increasing number of loose bolts. The experimental results are compared to the calculated ultimate bearing resistance according to the GB 50017, Eurocode 3, and AISC 360-16 standards. It is found that the resistance prediction of the standards may be too conservative for the prediction of the ultimate bearing capacity of loose high-strength bolted connections when bolt fracture governs failure. Practical design recommendations in the algebraic form are presented and verified to predict the yield load and ultimate bearing capacity of loose high-strength bolted connections.

Abstract:This article reports a theoretical study on shear yielding and ultimate shear capacities of anchor bolts. Two theoretical models are provided. The proposed shear yielding capacity is a summation of that provided by bending of the anchor bolt itself and the frictional force on the interface between the base plate and concrete. A free length of the bolt shank is first determined based on test results reported in the literature and then the plastic hinges are assumed to appear at the upper level of the base plate and at some distance in concrete below the free length. The frictional resistance is determined by assuming compression (equal to the tension in the anchor bolt) on the interface between concrete and the base plate. The compression is a vertical component pushing the base plate upward and proportional to the horizontal shear. Comparison with test results shows that the proposed model predicts shear yielding capacity with good accuracy and on the safe side. The model to predict the ultimate load shear capacity includes the horizontal component of the bolt ultimate tension and the frictional resistance provided by compression on the interface, which is equal to the vertical component of the bolt ultimate tension. The proposed model gives an excellent explanation as to why the ultimate shear capacity of the anchor bolts reaches far beyond the cross-sectional ultimate shear capacity.

Abstract:This paper reports an experimental study on shear behavior of anchor bolt connection at column bases.Totally 15 specimens in 5 groups were tested where the bolt diameter,the thickness of base plates and difference between diameters of the bolt hole at base plate and bolt were varied.The load-slip curves typically show two characteristic loads,respectively corresponding to the states of the formation of plastic hinges in the bolts and the contact between the bolt holes and bolts.Considering the two characteristic loads,the loading history may be divided into 3 stages: the elastic,slipping and hardening stages.The results indicate that the shear strength and slipping stiffness of the connections are significantly reduced with the increase of the thickness of base plate.The size of the bolt hole has significant effect on the stiffness and duration of the slipping stage while slight effect on the shear strength.A solution is then presented for the calculation of the shear strength of the anchor bolt connections considered in this paper,based on the first characteristic load on the test load-slip curves.The method for estimating the ultimate load of these connections is also proposed.

Abstract:This paper is a study on the mechanical behavior of grade 8.8 and 10.9 small-sized (M14-M20) bolts with the thread into the bolt hole. A total of eighty specimens with different thread depth, surface treatment, bolt diameter, and bolt strength grade were subjected to static loading tests. The effects of different parameters on the properties of specimens such as ultimate bearing capacity, initial slip load, ductility, and initial stiffness were systematically investigated. It was demonstrated that the typical failure mode is bolt shear failure. The increase in thread depth causes the ultimate bearing capacity of bolted connections to decrease, and other design parameters also have effects on the ultimate bearing capacity. The ultimate bearing capacity of bolted connections with shot-blasted surfaces is greater than that of bolted connections with wire-brushed surfaces. Moreover, bolted connections with a greater thread depth have a lower yield strength. The method of contact surface treatment, bolt diameter, and strength grade also affect the yield load of bolted connections. The initial stiffness does not change much with the increase of the thread depth. In addition, the increase in thread depth decreases the ductility coefficient and ultimate displacement, which has a negative effect on deformation performance, and the ductility coefficient of bolted connections also decreases with the increase in bolt grade. Finally, based on the test results, a design formula for predicting the ultimate bearing capacity was proposed, and the calculation results match the experimental results well. The difference in ultimate bearing capacity due to thread depth can be well described by the formula.

Abstract:This study presents a three-dimensional(3D) solid element and contact element to study numerically the butt connection with high strength bolts.Relations of bolt shear and slip deformation to external axial force are obtained.It is revealed that the distribution of shear forces among bolts is not uniform,larger at two ends and smaller in the middle of the bolt group.But at the moment the slip occurs,bolt shears are nearly uniform.After slipping,the distribution of shear forces are not uniform again,but the unevenness decreases compared to the slip-critical bolt connection.The analysis reveals that the bolt pretension decreases as the external force increases.The causes of this decrease are the Poisson's ratio effect of plates after tensioned,and squeezing of bolt shank after contact between bolt and the hole wall.The effects of bolt pitch,number of bolt,pretension force,length of screw bolt and plate width are studied.

Abstract:Because of high cost of tests and numerical calculation using solid element of high-strength bolts connection in steel frameworks, it is important to find an accurate and simplified approach to describe the shear behavior of high-strength bolts connection. The paper aims to find a spring element to simulate the shear behavior instead of solid element in structure. Firstly, solid element model of high-strength bolt connection is established, which is proved correct and applicable comparing with existing typical shear tests. Then, base on the reliability of finite element model, the shear behavior of bolts connection is further discussed through a large number of parameter analyses. The three feature points and four stages of the simplified shear model are calibrated according to tests and calculation results. A simplified shear behavior model and hysteretic criterion of high-strength bolts connection are proposed. According to cases study, feasibility of the proposed model is validated. The proposed model gives a simple process to provide quite accurate results, which provides a great tool for engineering applications.

Abstract:This paper analyzed the influencing factors on bearing performance of the bolted cover plate connection in stainless steel with finite element program ANSYS,and the values from tests and Eurocode are compared.Based on the analysis results,the bearing performance is enhanced with increasing of the thickness of plate,the diameter of bolt and the end distance.When the bolt diameter and the end distance increase to some value,the effect reduces.

Abstract:To investigate the static properties of large high strength bolt shear connector in hybrid fiber-reinforced concrete (HFRC) and normal concrete (NC), eight push-out test specimens with single/double nut and HFRC/NC slabs were designed and push-out tests were conducted. A fine 3D nonlinear finite element (FE) model including HFRC constitutive model was established by using ANSYS 18.0, and the test results were used to verify FE models of the push-out test specimens. Then a total of 13 FE models were analyzed with various parameters including fiber volume fractions of HFRC, bolt diameter and thickness of steel flange. Finally, the empirical equations considering the contribution of polypropylene fiber (PF) and steel fiber (SF) obtained from the regression of the test results and FE analysis were recommended to evaluate the load-slip curve and ultimate capacity of the large high strength bolt shear connector embedded in HFRC/NC.

Abstract:Connection of sharing on a shear load by bolts and welds is proposed by "Technical specification for high strength bolt connections of steel structures,JGJ82-2011".In that kind of connection,both bolt and weld joining are employed in one connection,and resist the same shear force.The finite element method is taken to analyze the mechanical performance of such connection with friction-type high-strength bolts and side welds.Failure mode and component of bearing capacity are discussed through several finite element numerical examples of different bolts-to-welds strength ratio.Hence the calculated formula is gotten for bearing capacity of combined connection.And parametric analysis of weld size and bolt specification is also made.The result shows that when the bolts-to-weld strength ratio is 0.85,both of bolts strength and welds strength are displayed almost completely.While the ratio is not 0.85,there exist different extents of waste for the higher strength.The formula of bearing capacity could be expressed as a linear combination of bolts and welds shear strength.As a result,the co-use of bolts and weld in one joint is an efficient way of structural reinforcement or modification.

Abstract:Twelve push-out test specimens were conducted with various parameters to study the static and fatigue performance of a new through-bolt shear connector transferring the shear forces of interface between prefabricated hybrid fiber reinforced concrete (HFRC) slabs and steel girders. It was found that the fibers could improve the fatigue life, capacity and initial stiffness of through-bolt shear connector. While the bolt-hole clearance reduced, the initial stiffness, capacity and slippage of through-bolt shear connector increased. After the steel-concrete interface properties were improved, the initial stiffness increased, and the capacity and slippage reduced. Base on the test results, the equation of the load-slip curve and capacity of through-bolt shear connector with prefabricated HFRC slab were obtained by the regression of test results, and the allowable range of shear force under fatigue load was recommended, which could provide the reference in the design of through-bolt shear connector with prefabricated HFRC slabs.

Abstract:Bolt empowers significant efficacy in reinforcing jointed rock mass, which is mainly embodied in the enhancement of shear performance and the restraint to the dislocation between rock blocks. However, the prevailing assumption that the influencing area of bolt covers the whole joint surface contradicts to the experimental evidence of direct shear tests. In this case, by adopting saw-tooth filling joint samples made of rock-like materials, the direct shear tests were conducted under different normal stresses, and the influencing mechanism of bolt on the shear performance was investigated. Then, the similarities and differences in shear strength, deformation, and failure patterns of unbolted and bolted joints with different filling ratios were analyzed. Besides, based on the assumption of elliptical influencing area of bolt, a new shear strength calculation model of bolted joints was established, and theoretical calculation results show an excellent agreement with test results, verifying the rationality and validity of the proposed model.

Abstract:High strength bolted friction type joints are often used for the site connections of members in steel bridges. A bolt used for the joint is generally 8T or 10T class one. The slip resistance of the joint is determined by multiplying a slip coefficient factor by a bolt axial force. The bolt force is introduced dependent on the tensile strength of the bolt. The 14T class bolts with higher tensile strength are recently used. The slip coefficient factor for a design of the bolted connection is specified as a single value independent of a bolt axial force. However, it is confirmed by recent studies that the friction factor decreases as contact pressure becomes high. Therefore, as for the joints with 14T class bolt, it is necessary to use the slip coefficient factor lower than one established for the joints with conventional 10T class bolts. In this study, slip coefficient factor according to bolt tightening force has been made clear through slip tests and FE analyses on the joints with 8T, 10T and 14T class bolts.
Experimental Research on Slip Factor in Bolted Connection with Stainless Steel

Abstract:In order to study the anti-slip behavior in slip bolt joints with stainless steel,give reference to the use of bolted connection in engineering as well as the stainless steel code in preparation,the slip factor in bolted connection with stainless steel was obtained through experiment,considering three types of bolts( 10. 9,A4-70,A4-80) and four kinds of surface processing method( abrasion blasting,wire drawing,scoring,non-processing). Wire drawing exhibits best anti-slip behavior,then scoring,and abrasion blasting last,even worse than non-processing. 10. 9 and A4-80 meet the requirements of preload in code while A4-70 fails,which means that the torque coefficient of A4-70 should be increased in the further study. The anti-slip behavior of all the four kinds of surface processing method is not satisfactory,so that new processing should be developed for the widespread use of frictional bolts in stainless steel.
Fundamental Study for Slip Resistance Improvement of High-Strength Bolted Joints Subjected to Shear and Tension

Abstract:The objective of this study was to refine the slip resistance formulas for high-strength bolted joints subjected to combined shear and tension forces. Traditional formulas typically assume that the prying force generated at the contact surface does not contribute to the slip resistance. To explore the influences of the prying force on slip resistance, a trial design was conducted based on the Specifications for Highway Bridges and Recommendation for Design of High Strength Tensile Bolted Connections for Steel Bridges , with variations in parameters such as bolt diameter, bolt pitch, joint flange thickness, and joint flange material. Additionally, numerical analyses were performed to validate the design methodology incorporating prying force. The trial design results demonstrated that the slip capacity improved when the prying force was considered, especially in cases where the external force direction ranged between 27.6 and 90 degrees. The maximum observed improvement in slip capacity was a factor of 1.2. Moreover, the slip resistance of joints with thinner flanges was enhanced when prying force effects were accounted for. This increase in slip capacity due to prying force was further corroborated through fine element method (FEM) simulations. Finally, the findings suggest the potential for enhancing joint compactness and slip resistance.

Abstract:Fastener pre-tension is commonly used in the practical cases of aluminium alloy bearing-type connections with friction provided by treated surfaces. However, research on the effect of friction on the ultimate resistance is currently limited. In this paper, a numerical investigation on the structural performance and design of aluminium alloy double shear connections fastened by preloaded stainless steel swage-locking pins is presented. Finite element (FE) models were developed using Abaqus explicit dynamic packages and validated against the tests conducted previously. Prior to the numerical modelling of shear connections, the framework of aluminium alloy material properties has been studied. In order to simulate the full-range stress–strain relations and the failure of the tested aluminium alloys, two damage models were evaluated. The adopted model was then used to simulate the fracture occurred at the peak load or the post-peak stage in the double shear connection tests, and investigate their failure mechanism of bearing, shear-out and end-splitting. Upon validation, an extensive parametric study of 330 shear connections was conducted to investigate the effect of friction and pin configuration on the structural performance of shear connections made of different aluminium alloy grades. The values of the friction and pin hole resistance at the ultimate loads were comprehensively discussed. The numerically derived ultimate resistances were also compared with the current design equations, which were shown to provide conservative and scattered results due to the lack of consideration of the friction effect. A new design method was proposed with the friction effect incorporated, resulting in accurate predictions of ultimate resistance for aluminium alloy shear connections with preloaded stainless steel swage-locking pins.
An Improved and Robust Finite Element Model for Simulation of Thin-Walled Steel Bolted Connections

Abstract:Thin-walled cold-formed steel (CFS) structures are widely used in low-storey buildings and are seeing increased applications in multi-storey buildings as well as long-span structures. The bolted connection is one of the most common types of fasteners employed in CFS structures. The bolt slippage and load-bearing mechanism in CFS connections have a significant influence on the structural behaviour of cold-formed steel construction assemblies, which are typically numerically simulated using spring/connector elements. However, the determination of input parameters for the spring/connector elements generally requires load-deformation characteristics obtained from physical tests of lap joints, which are costly and time-consuming. Moreover, the use of spring/connector elements fails to explicitly capture the bolt bearing behaviour, resulting in inaccuracy in the simulation of CFS connections. In this paper, an accurate, efficient and robust numerical method that can fully replicate the behaviour of CFS connections considering both the effects of bolt slippage and bearing has been introduced. In the proposed numerical methodology, the cold-formed plates are modelled using the conventional shell elements, while a number of solid elements are introduced around the bolt holes, enabling the bolt-plate interaction to be explicitly accounted for, with contact pairs defined between the bolts and their surrounding solid element surfaces. The proposed numerical method could find a convergence solution using dynamic implicit solver in the general-purpose finite element (FE) software ABAQUS. Good agreement between the FE models using the proposed method and the available test results of CFS bolted connections were achieved, which sheds light on the promising application of the proposed method for simulating CFS assembled using bolted connections.
Viscous Friction Effect During the Process of Tightening and Loosening of Bolted Joints

Abstract:Bolted connection is one of the most widely used mechanical connections because of its easiness of installation and disassembly. Research of bolted joints mainly focuses on two aspects: high precision tightening and improvement of anti-loosening performance. The under-head bearing friction coefficient and the thread friction coefficient are the two most important parameters that affect the tightening result of the bolted joint. They are also the most critical parameters that affect the anti-loosening performance of the bolted joint. Coulomb friction model is a commonly used model to describe under-head bearing friction and thread friction, which considers the friction coefficient as a constant independent of normal pressure and relative sliding velocity. In this paper, the viscous effect of the under-head bearing friction and thread friction is observed by measuring the friction coefficient of bolted joints. The value of the friction coefficient increases with the increase of the relative sliding velocity and the decrease of the normal pressure. It is found that the Coulomb viscous friction model can better describe the friction coefficient of bolted joints. Taking into account the dense friction effect, the loosening prediction model of bolted joints is modified. The experimental results show that the Coulomb viscous friction model can better describe the under-head bearing friction coefficient and thread friction coefficient. The model considering the dense effect can more accurately predict the loosening characteristics of bolted joints.
Experiment Research On Slip Coefficient Of Q460 High Strength Steel Bolted Connections

Abstract:High strength steels have been used successfully in several structures in China, but there hasn't been research on the slip coefficient of high strength steel bolted connections. In this paper, 6 Q460 high strength steel bolted connection specimens are tested, including 3 different steel plate surface treatments, which are sandblasting, inorganic zinc-rich painted after sandblasting, untreated clean surface, to get their slip coefficients. Then the test results are discussed and also compared with the design values. Furthermore, when bearing failure occurred on the plate, the net cross-section necking would cause a reduction of the preloaded force. The slip coefficient of high strength steel plate is found to be less than that of ordinary strength steel plate with the same surface treatment, which is reduced by 8% to 10%, probably due to the higher surface hardness of high strength steel.

Abstract:Bolt connection structure is a common form of connecting large and complex equipment. Its object contact surfaces under normal and tangential loads will appear in the form of slip and adhesion, which affects the service life of mechanical equipment. Bolted connection structures cause changes in stiffness and damping, which have great impacts on the dynamic characteristics. Experimental studies and numerical simulations have difficulty predicting the overall performance of bolts in a timely manner, hence cannot ensure the reliability and safety of complex equipment. In order to improve the overall performance of complex equipment, it is necessary to study the contact theory model of bolt connection structures. Based on the relationship between friction force and velocity in the classical friction model, the mathematical expressions of restoring force and tangential displacement in the kinetic theory model are deduced to predict the stiffness degradation of the bolted structure and to characterise the kinetic properties and laws of the bolted structure. From the perspective of theoretical calculation, it makes up for the situation in which it is difficult to measure the performance of bolts due to the existence of spanning scale and provides theoretical support for the reliability of connecting complex equipment. This paper summarises and analyses the contact theory model of bolt connection structures, ranging from macroscopic to microscopic; describes the static friction model, kinetic friction model, statistical summation contact model, fractal contact model; and analyses the influencing factors of the microscopic contact mechanism. The advantages and disadvantages of the kinetic theoretical models are described, the manifestation of friction and the relationship between tangential force–displacement are discussed, and the key research directions of the kinetic theoretical models of bolted structures in the future are elucidated.
