Abstract:Equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) is currently focused due to its capability to fabricate bulk ultrafine-grained material.Effective strain distribution and the variation of pressing load for ECAP of commercial pure aluminum was obtained through numerical simulation. The veracity of the simulative results were checked by grid method experiment.Effective strain is higher at the bottom than at the top of the sample under friction condition, and is higher at the top than at the bottom of the sample without friction.It might be result from different stress and strain field in the equal channel angular pressed sample.
Tensile and Compressive Deformation Behaviors of Commercially Pure Al Processed by Equal-Channel Angular Pressing with Different Dies

Abstract:An investigation was conducted on the tensile and compressive properties of commercially pure Al processed by equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP) with two different dies. The specimens along two different directions were cut from the ECAPed billets to study the effect of orientation on the compressive yield strength and the surface deformation morphologies along normal direction (ND) and extrusion direction (ED). It was found that the yield strength of the specimens along ED under tension was lower than that along ED under compression, but higher than that along ND under compression. The surface observations showed that there were some differences in the deformation morphologies under compression along two different directions. Based on the mechanical tests and observations of surface morphologies of ECAPed pure Al, the relationship between shear deformation behavior and tension/compression asymmetry was discussed.

Abstract:Equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) is an attractive process method to produce bulk ultra-fine grained materials. There are many experiment evidences showing that the nature of the microstructural evolution in multi-pass ECAP depends on process routes. Isothermal three dimensional FEM simulations for multi-pass ECAP were performed using DEFORM3D finite element code. The material model of 6061Al-T6 was employed. Flow nets, effective strain distribution in the workpiece and loads during multi-pass ECAP using different routes were analysed respectively. The simulations show process routes influence material flow and effective strain distribution in the workpiece obviously but have few influence on loads.

Abstract:Commercial purity aluminum (99.5% Al) was deformed by equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) using up to 10 passes using route Bc. The evolution of microstructure and texture was characterized using the electron back scattered pattern technique. By use of the stereological parameter length per unit area (LA), it was found that on average a sub-micron grain size is developed only after 10 passes. Significant heterogeneity exists however in the sample and in some places a sub-micron grain size is not developed even after 10 passes. The texture strength was found to increase with increasing strain over the strain range investigated. Comparison of microstructural evolution with other deformation modes suggests that ECAP is more similar to cyclic extrusion-compression than to cold-rolling.

Abstract:Numerical simulation and microstructure analysis to an equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) of low-carbon steel were conducted, and the effective strain distribution and the pattern of pressing load were obtained via the numerical simulation. The simulated pressing load increases with the increase of friction coefficient, and with a friction coefficient of 0.408 it is 2.1 times of that without friction, which coincides roughly with the experimental observation. Microstructure observation after one pass of ECAP shows that grain refinement might be more significant at the bottom than that at the top of the sample, and the distribution corresponds to the effective strain features.

Abstract:Based on severe plastic deformation, the equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) method has been used for producing metal materials with the ultrafine grain size and specific mechanical properties, particularly high yield strength. The grain sizes and the mechanical properties of ECAP processed materials strongly depend on the degree of plastic deformation, which is congregated by the evolution of dislocation slipping in the slipping planes. It is very important to analyze the dislocation density and strain hardening evolution in the slipping planes. In this paper, based on the crystal plastic model, the strain hardening & grain refinement of aluminum alloys were calculated with a dislocation evolution model during equal channel angular pressing. Next, the simulated strain, stress and grain size evolution were analyzed. Although the maximum value of the strain is very similar, the stress is rapidly increased when the materials pass the shear areas. Regarding the congregation of the dislocation density, the grain sizes decrease with the process continuing.

Abstract:The aim of equal channel angular extrusion is to get ultrafine grained bulk materials. The practice process is not under isothermal conditions. It is important to understand the details of the deformation and temperature transient within the shear zone. The temperature rise and temperature distribution in the billet and die during equal channel angular extrusion at different pressing temperatures were investigated by using 3D FEM.

Abstract:The deformation mechanism of equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP) was investigated by in-situ physical modeling experiment, in which the billet consisting of two kinds of color grains with designed patterns was pressed through an ECAP die made of a transparent plexiglass. It was found that the evolution of the flow patterns was governed by the geometric character of ECAP die, and a deformation zone with a sector shape was formed in billet during the experiments. Based on the observations in the in-situ physical modeling experiment, a simple flow line field and the corresponding geometrical aspect of shear deformation were proposed.

Abstract:The influence of the microstructure evolution of materials on the strain hardening,the stress and the strain is the key to make metal materials forming by equal channel angular pressing(ECAP).On the basis of a dislocation evolution model,the finite element method was introduced to the deformation behavior of pure aluminum during the ECAP.And the simulated stress,strain and strain distribution and strain hardening were analyzed.The results show that the equivalent stress of the pure aluminum augments gradually with the pass increasing,which results in the increase of the dislocation density.With the dislocation density increasing,the maximum of the principal strain augments with the pass increasing.Therefore,the extrusion forming can be guided by the microstructure evolution law of the materials,such as the dislocation evolution of the ECAP.

Abstract:Equal channel angular (ECA) pressing is a novel process to obtain an ultra-fine grain size in alloys and compounds through severe plastic deformation. However, severe friction occurs during such pressing. In this report, pure aluminum and an AlMgSi alloy were processed by ECA pressing and the load was recorded. The mechanical properties of the alloys before and after different passes during processing were measured by the tensile test. The relationship between the flow stress and the material properties are discussed. The results show that a properly designed die will give less friction. From this experiment, it is suggested that the exit channel of the ECA pressing die should be designed to be as short as possible, as long as the channel is strong enough to ensure ECA pressing. These results confirm that ECA pressing is a promising process that can be conducted under low pressure.

Abstract:With the help of finite element method,the distribution of equivalent strain,extrusion load during the isothermal equal channel angular pressing(ECAP) of Ti-6Al-4V alloy under different shear factor of friction,channel and corner angle were studied.The results showed that the increasing factor of friction caused the strain concentration,since the maximum load was improved 2.37 times than that of no friction, when the shear factor of friction was 0.5.Increasing channel angle was beneficial for decreasing load and deformation homogeneousness,but reducing equivalent strain in each pass.In addition,decreasing corner angle was beneficial for increasing the extent of the homogeneous deformation,but exhibited severe strain concentration near the corner angle.

Abstract:A Cu-0.41Mg-0.06Ca (wt.%) alloy was processed by equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) for up to 12 passes via Bc route at room temperature, and its homogeneity was evaluated from three aspects of hardness, microstructure and crystallographic texture. The hardness was measured in detail on the whole transverse planes, and the microstructure and the crystallographic texture in the central and bottom regions on the transverse planes were investigated by electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) technique. After 1 ECAP pass, the hardness in the central region was 9.4% higher than that in the bottom region; the microstructure in the central region consisted of the elongated grains, while that in the bottom region was composed of the slightly distorted grains; the crystallographic texture in the central region followed the ideal orientations of the ECAP crystallographic texture, nevertheless the crystallographic texture in the bottom region obviously deviated from any ideal orientation of the ECAP crystallographic texture. Then, with the increase of ECAP passes, the hardness and microstructure differences between in the two regions gradually weakened, and the deviation of the crystallographic texture in the bottom region gradually decreased. After 8 ECAP passes, the both regions showed the same hardness, the similar ultrafine-grained microstructure and the similar crystallographic texture. The difference formation should be attributed to the non-uniform strain caused by the friction between the sample and the die wall, rather than caused by the corner gap. The difference weakening should be attributed to the strain hardening behavior of metals. The strength calculation showed that the Cu-Mg-Ca alloy after 8 ECAP passes had almost the same yield strengths where 593 MPa for the central region and 583 MPa for the bottom region, showing only 1.7% difference.

Abstract:Equal channel angular extrusion (ECAE) is a technology of refining crystal grain. In this paper. ECAE was introduced into the preparation of semi-solid billet and the extrusion process was simulated using finite element method. The variation of stress (mean stress, max principle stress, effective stress), the distribution of strain, the lattice change were obtained. The results show that not only does the shear stress exist, but also the normal stress in the extrusion process; the stresses in die inner corner of channel and outer corner of channel are not the same. In the inner corner, besides the simple shear, there are compression, and in the outer corner, tension. The strain is non-homogeneous and appears a graded distribution.

Abstract:Uniaxial compressive experiments of ultrafine-grained Al fabricated by equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) method were performed at wide temperature and strain rate range. The influence of temperature on flow stress, strain hardening rate and strain rate sensitivity was investigated experimentally. The results show that both the effect of temperature on flow stress and its strain rate sensitivity of ECAPed Al is much larger than those of the coarse-grained Al. The temperature sensitivity of ultrafine-grained Al is comparatively weaker than that of the coarse-grained Al. Based on the experimental results, the apparent activation volume was estimated at different temperatures and strain rates. The forest dislocation interactions is the dominant thermally activated mechanism for ECAPed Al compressed at quasi-static strain rates, while the viscous drag plays an important role at high strain rates.

Abstract:Ultrafine-grained (UFG) high purity aluminum exhibits a variety of attractive mechanical properties and special deformation behavior. Equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) process can be used to easily and effectively refine metals. The microstructure and microtexture evolutions and grain boundary characteristics of the high purity aluminum (99.998%) processed by ECAP at room temperature are investigated by means of TEM and EBSD. The results indicate that the shear deformation resistance increases with repeated EACP passes, and equiaxed grains with an average size of 0.9 μm in diameter are formed after five passes. Although the orientations distribution of grains tends to evolve toward random orientations, and microtextures (80°, 35°, 0°), (40°, 75°, 45°) and (0°, 85°, 45°) peak in the sample after five passes. The grain boundaries in UFG aluminum are high-angle geometrically necessary boundaries. It is suggested that the continuous dynamic recrystallization is responsible for the formation of ultrafine grains in high purity aluminum. Microstructure evolution in the high purity aluminum during ECAP is proposed.

Abstract:In the present work, the principles and processing models of equal channel angular pressing (ECAP) for as-cast magnesium alloys were investigated. With structural design of ECAP die, the accumulated effect of shear strains under ECAP was calculated. By observation of optical microstructure of single-passed ECAP deformed cast ingot of AM60 magnesium, the effective relationship of die geometric structure (angle and subtending one at corner between entry and exit channels) to the evolution of deformed microstructure was discussed. Based on the curves of displacement versus extrusion force during multi-passed ECAP, a mode of evolution of deformed microstructure was analyzed under different pressing conditions (e.g. number of passes, back-forces, and deforming rate). Routine of experiment and modeling for ECAP of magnesium alloys was schemed. It can be concluded from the study that the ECAP deformed microstructure of AM60 casting ingot fits the one estimated by theory of plastic mechanics well. Multi-passed ECAP can perfect the microstructure of alloy tremendously. For as-east magnesium alloys characterized by coarse-grained structure, ECAP is an effective thermo-mechanical processing to make their ultra-fine grains.
Microstructure and Properties of Ultrafine-Grained Aluminum-Based Alloy Processed by Equal Channel Angular Pressing

Abstract:Ultrafine-grained aluminum-based alloy was fabricated via equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP) and microstructural evolution at different passes of ECAP was researched. The results reveal that the microstructures evolve from an array of elongated dislocation cells with grain size less than 1 μm separated by boundaries having low angles of misorientation into an array of reasonably finer bands of subgrains separated by high-angle boundaries with increasing severe plastic deformation. The grain size is reduced from 50 μm in the initial state to 0.2 μm after a total of 8 passes of ECAP. The grain size is within 0.2-0.3 μm while annealed at 150°C for 4 min to 240 min. A maximum elongation of 370% is achieved at 500°C with an initial strain rate of 10-3 s-1 in a tension test, showing a fine super-plasticity of the ultrafine-grained material.
Grain Refinement and Strengthening of an Aluminum Alloy Subjected to Severe Plastic Deformation through Equal-Channel Angular Pressing

Abstract:In the present study, the microstructure, mechanical properties, and stored energy of an aluminum alloy containing iron-rich fine precipitates, subjected to severe plastic deformation through equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP), were investigated using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and atomic force microscopy. Up to four passes through ECAP resulted in significant nanometer-scale grain refinement, as well as the accumulation of lattice defects, such as dislocations and mesoscopic shear planes. This resulted in a noticeable enhancement in the Vickers microhardness and the flow stress after ECAP. Differential scanning calorimetry results showed that the ECAP'ed material exhibited two exothermal peaks at 222 ± 2 °C and 362 ± 2 °C, with total thermal effects of ΔH = 4.35 and 6.5 J/g, respectively. Slight increases in the ECAP'ed material microhardness and flow stress were observed at 200 °C. The heat release, at a relatively low temperature, and the slight improvement in the mechanical properties were attributed to the evolution of low- and high-angle misorientation, with the strain and the pinning of tangled dislocation caused by the existing fine particles. The second peak was attributed to grain growth, resulting in a significant softening of the material.
