Abstract:Engineering ceramics in the system Si-O-C-N-B manufactured from preceramic silicon containing polymers gain in significance with increasing availability of advanced precursor materials such as poly(carbosilane), -(silazane), -(siloxane) or -(borosilazane). While high temperature resistant Si-C and Si-N ceramic fibers are already used to reinforce ceramic matrix composites (CMC) in air- and spacecraft structures, novel products such as coatings, tapes, foams, and complex shaped components for medium and low temperature applications in the fields of energy, environmental, transportation, and communication technologies become more important in the future. The synthesis of preceramic polymer, properties of polymer derived ceramic, methods of manufacturing and effects on polymer pyrolysis were reviewed.

Abstract:Porous silicon nitride ceramics is a promising functional ceramic material. In recent years, the research on the preparation of porous silicon nitride ceramics within different methods has been widely investigated. First, this work reviews the main synthesis methods of Si 3 N 4 porous ceramics in detail, and compares the differences between strength and porosity caused by each method. The characteristics and advantages of different technologies under the current conditions were evaluated. Second, the dielectric properties, sound absorption properties and permeability properties of silicon nitride ceramics were compared and summarized based on the experimental results. Third, the applications fields of porous silicon nitride ceramics, such as smelting industry, catalyst carrier, sound absorption, wave-transparent, and biomedical fields were explored. Finally, the assessment of different silicon nitride ceramics preparation technologies was elaborated. This review gives an outlook on the porous silicon nitride ceramics, which shows great potential for further research in this field.

Abstract:Boron carbide ceramics are typical structural materials with excellent comprehensive properties, due to their high hardness, high elastic modulus, excellent resistance to wear and corrosion, as well as other advantages. The densiifcation of boron carbide ceramics can be realized by effective additives, appropriate temperature and pressure to improve their mechanical behaviors. Thus, the sintering and densiifcation are the key steps in the entire preparing process. Here, the basic principle and routes of the sintering of boron carbide ceramics are summarized, and their applications in the ifeld of armor, nuclear power, and abrasives are presented.

Abstract:This paper reviewed the recent progress about the studing on porous silicon nitride ceramics at home and abroad during recent years. The preparation methods of porous silicon nitride ceramics were summaried,and the influences of microstructure on their mechanical properties were analyzed. The performances of porous silicon nitride ceramics were compared with other porous ceramics. In future,the porous Si3N4 ceramics will have a very good prospect for the industrial application.

Abstract:Porous SiC ceramic was prepared by pressureless sintering method using micron-grade SiC as raw material, Al2O3and Y2O3 as sintering aids, bamboo charcoal and silica sol as pore-forming agents. The inlfuence of pore forming agents on sintering performance, mechanical performance, and microstructure of SiC honeycomb ceramic was analyzed. The results show the relative density and the bending strength of SiC ceramic decreased, and the contractibility of SiC ceramic and the porosity of the fracture surface increased with the enhancement of pore forming agent amount, but the component of SiC ceramic remained stable.

Abstract:The realization of the necessary energy-efficient technological solutions for the production of highly porous SiC-ceramic materials requires appropriate research. The results of developing energy-efficient one-step methods for the synthesis of porous SiC-based ceramics and studying the characteristics of the obtained ceramics are presented. The effect of the morphology of initial powders on the synthesized product is considered. Ultrafine silicon carbide powders of two types, identical in characteristic particle size, but quite different in the surface morphology, were used as fillers in the synthesis of experimental samples of porous ceramics. The first one was obtained by the traditional furnace method (SiC f ), the second one was synthesized by the technology of self-propagating high-temperature synthesis (SiC shs ). It is shown that the particle morphology of initial powder components determines the structural parameters and characteristics of synthesized porous ceramics. The pore space parameters (average pore size, specific surface area, equivalent hydraulic diameter, permeability, etc.) can vary significantly. Porous ceramic materials synthesized on the basis of SiC f have an open porosity of 47%, high liquid permeability (up to 2 mDarcy), overwhelming dominance of α-SiC phase, and a narrow pore distribution with an average pore size of about 1 μm. High open porosity (more than 58 %), highly developed nanostructured pore space surface with an area of more than 12 m 2 /g, and wider pore size distribution (average pore size — 140 nm) are observed in porous ceramic materials based on SiC shs . The obtained results can be used to improve energy-efficient synthesis technologies and methods for predicting the properties of highly porous SiC-based ceramic materials. This will make it possible to create highly porous SiC ceramics within a priory predicted limits of effective applicability for the processes of ultrafiltration or catalysis.

Abstract:In the past twenty years, Si-B-C-N ceramic has attracted wide attention due to its special structure and outstanding properties. The ceramic generally has an amorphous or a nano-crystalline structure, and has excellent structural stability, oxidation resistance, creep resistance and high-temperature mechanical properties, etc. Thus, Si-B-C-N ceramic attracts many researchers and finds potential applications in transportation, aerocraft, energy, information, microelectronics and environment, etc. Much work has been carried out on its raw materials, preparation processes, structural evolution, phase equilibrium and high-temperature properties. In recent years, many researchers focus on its new preparation methods, the preparation of dense ceramic sample with large dimensions, ceramic matrix composites reinforced by carbon fiber or SiC whisker, or components with various applications. Research on Si-B-C-N ceramic will develop our insight into the relationship between structures and properties of ceramics, and will be helpful to the development of novel high-performance ceramics. This paper reviews the preparation processes, general microstructures, mechanical, chemical, electrical and optical properties, and potential applications of Si-B-C-N ceramic, as well as its matrix composites.

Abstract:The core-shell structure silicon-resin precursor powders were synthesized through coat-mix process and addition of Al2O3-SiO2-Y2O3 composite additives. A series of porous silicon carbide ceramics were produced after molding, carbonization and sintering. The phase, morphology, porosity, thermal conductivity, thermal expansion coefficient, and thermal shock resistance were analyzed. The results show that porous silicon carbide ceramics can be produced at low temperature. The grain size of porous silicon carbide ceramic is small, and the thermal conductivity is enhanced significantly. Composite additives also improve the thermal shock resistance of porous ceramics. The bending strength loss rate after 30 times of thermal shock test of the porous ceramics which were added Al2O3-SiO2-Y2O3 and sintered at 1 650 °C is only 6.5%. Moreover, the pore inside of the sample is smooth, and the pore size distribution is uniform. Composite additives make little effect on the thermal expansion coefficient of the porous silicon carbide ceramics.

Abstract:Ceramic industry developed rapidly in recent years, a greater demand for new materials. SiC ceramics as one of candidate materials that a few suitable for use high-temperature structural parts, shows its unique advantages in the high temperature, thermal shock, corrosive and other harsh environments. Its high temperature performance and application potential has attracted people's attention, but its properties make it difficult sintering at atmospheric pressure, unable to meet the needs of industrial production. Pressure less sintering technology has become the key in its application promotion. As strong antioxidant activity, better abrasion resistance, hardness, thermal stability, high temperature strength, thermal expansion coefficient, thermal conductivity and thermal shock and great chemical resistance and other excellent characteristics, Silicon carbide ceramics are widely used in various fields. Based on the silicon carbide ceramic materialisms development process, characteristics, international research and proposed several status of sintering silicon carbide ceramic, and discuss its development trends.

Abstract:Two kinds of methods were used to make porous SiC ceramics .The effect of microstructure on the properties was discussed.A new technique was developed to make porous SiC from natural wood.The results showed that natural wood was good material for making porous SiC ceramics with high porosity more than 40%.Through this way,the prepared silicon carbide has high porosity ,shape-regular and well-distributed pores.

Abstract:Dense silicon carbide ceramics using chemical treated powder by DCC via dispersant reaction method and liquid phase sintering was reported. Ammonium peroxydisulfate ((NH4)2S2O8) and ammonium carbonate ((NH4)2CO3) were used as acid and base solutions to treat the silicon carbide powder, respectively. Influence of silicon carbide powder with chemical treatment on the preparation of silicon carbide suspension was studied. It was indicated that 50vol% and 52vol% silicon carbide suspensions with viscosities of 0.71Pas and 0.80Pas could be prepared using acid and base treated powders. Influence of silicon carbide powder with chemical treatment on the coagulation process and properties of green bodies and sintered ceramics were studied. It was indicated that silicon carbide green bodies with compressive strength of 1.13MPa could be prepared using base treated powder. Dense silicon carbide ceramics with relative density above 99.3% and flexural strength of 697±30MPa had been prepared by DCC via dispersant reaction and liquid phase sintering using Al2O3 and Y2O3 as additives at 1950°C for 2h.

Abstract:3D-carbon fiber felts reinforced ceramic-based composites are considered as valuable structural materials due to their excellent high-temperature mechanical performance, low density and low thermal conductivity. In order to enhance the mechanical properties of the carbon fiber reinforced silicon oxycarbide (SiOC) ceramics, in-situ growth of SiCnws on the surface of carbon fiber via a simple precursor impregnation and pyrolysis method was proposed. As a result, nanoscale SiC nanowires and microscale carbon fiber felts reinforced SiOC ceramics were successfully fabricated. The results showed that the compressive strength of the composite increased by 369% and 173% after two PIP process in x/y and z directions, respectively. The enhanced compressive strength could be ascribed to the brittle fracture of SiCnws and CFs, and crack deflection.

Abstract:Silicon carbide/graphite composite ceramic was prepared by liquid silicon inifltration processing using pure carbon powder as raw material, phenolic resin as binder, and polyvinyl alcohol as pore forming agent. The inlfuence of polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) content on the sintering behavior and the microstructure of the ceramic was investigated. The results show that PVA volatilized during the sintering and generated the porous structures in the body, which was beneifcial to the permeation of liquid silicon and the reaction between silicon and carbon powders to form the SiC/C composite ceramics. The sintering and mechanical properties of the SiC/C composite ceramic improved with the increase of PVA content. When 15% PVA was added, the properties of the SiC/C composite ceramics were the best. Whereas, the content of PVA did not affect the phase composition of the SiC/C composite ceramic. The resultant silicon carbide/graphite composite ceramic could be applied in the ifeld of mechanical seals.

Abstract:The high topological silicon carbide (SiC) ceramics can be prepared by stereolithography (SLA) combined with liquid silicon infiltration (LSI) techniques. This paper aims to enhance the performance of SiC ceramics prepared by SLA and LSI techniques via the cyclic impregnation/carbonization of the precursor of carbon source solution before LSI. The effects of impregnation/carbonization cycles on the microstructure and properties of C/SiC preform and sintered body were analyzed in detail. The results show that, with the increase of impregnation/carbonization cycles, the porosity in the C/SiC preform decreases obviously and the content of secondary SiC in the sintered body increases effectively. Especially, when the impregnation/carbonization cycle was performed twice, the sintered body had the optimal mechanical properties. The value of flexural strength, bulk density and elastic modulus were 258.63 ± 8.33 MPa, 2.95 ± 0.02 g/cm3 and 425.16 ± 14.15 GPa, respectively. In addition, the thermal dimensional stability of sintered body was also improved by this method. This method proves that SiC ceramics prepared by SLA combined with LSI have the potential of applications in space optical mirrors.
