Abstract:In the past twenty years, Si-B-C-N ceramic has attracted wide attention due to its special structure and outstanding properties. The ceramic generally has an amorphous or a nano-crystalline structure, and has excellent structural stability, oxidation resistance, creep resistance and high-temperature mechanical properties, etc. Thus, Si-B-C-N ceramic attracts many researchers and finds potential applications in transportation, aerocraft, energy, information, microelectronics and environment, etc. Much work has been carried out on its raw materials, preparation processes, structural evolution, phase equilibrium and high-temperature properties. In recent years, many researchers focus on its new preparation methods, the preparation of dense ceramic sample with large dimensions, ceramic matrix composites reinforced by carbon fiber or SiC whisker, or components with various applications. Research on Si-B-C-N ceramic will develop our insight into the relationship between structures and properties of ceramics, and will be helpful to the development of novel high-performance ceramics. This paper reviews the preparation processes, general microstructures, mechanical, chemical, electrical and optical properties, and potential applications of Si-B-C-N ceramic, as well as its matrix composites.

Abstract:The interphase in continuous SiC fiber reinforced SiC ceramic matrix composites (SiCf/SiC) generally plays a key role for load-transfer, interfacial debonding and fibers protection, consequently tailoring the mechanical properties, thermodynamic stability, corrosion resistance of composites. Hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN), which possesses a graphite-like layered structure and better oxidation resistance compared with pyrolytic carbon (PyC), is now considered as one of the best candidates as interphase in SiCf/SiC composites. In this paper, the influences of different preparation methods on the microstructure, crystal structure, and thickness of boron nitride (BN) interphase are summarized. And the research progress of CVI (or CVD) preparation of BN and BN-based multiple-layers interphases are emphasized. The effects of different preparation methods on the mechanical and thermal properties of SiCf/SiC composites and the solutions to improve the crystal ordering of BN are summarized. Moreover, the future development regarding optimization in the preparation method and microstructure tailoring of BN interphase are discussed.

Abstract:A series of BN-SiO2 composite ceramics with high relative densities have been fabricated by hot pressing of a mixture of hexagonal boron nitride powder and silica sol. X-ray diffraction (XRD) results show that silica are distributed in the BN matrix as noncrystalline state. Microstructure of as-sintered composite ceramics is observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The influence of the secondary phase on the mechanical properties is studied by varying the silica content from 10 wt% up to 40 wt%. Dielectric properties of composite ceramics are also measured from 1 MHz to 2.0 GHz.

Abstract:The introduction of heterogeneous elements into SiC ceramics can endow the ceramics with more excellent performances,such as high temperature stability and unique electromagnetic properties.When preparing ceramics through a single-source-precursor route,the composition and microstructure of ceramics can be designed and tailored by tuning the architecture of single-source-precursors at the atomic scale for optimizing the ceramic performance.The research trends on Si-B-C,Si-M-C (M =Ti,Zr,Hf) and Si-M-C (M=Fe,Ni) ceramic composites derived from a single-source-precursor route were elaborated according to the research achievements in recent years,meanwhile,its development trend in the future was discussed.

Abstract:Nano SiC/BN(C) ceramic was prepared from the mechanically-alloyed amorphous SiBCN powder, hot pressed at 1900°C under 80MPa in the nitrogen atmosphere for 30min. The microstructures and the properties of the prepared ceramic were carefully studied by XRD, TEM (SAED, HRTEM and EFTEM), EELS and property testing. Results show that the ceramic consists of β-SiC, α-SiC and BN(C). SiC has an average grain size of about 78.2±32.4nm, most of which have numerous stacking faults. BN(C) has small size, no fixed shape and turbostratic structure with heterogeneously distributed t-carbon layers, t-BN layers and B-doped t-carbon layers. It has uniform distribution in the ceramic, retarding the atomic diffusion and being responsible for the fine grains. The ceramic has room-temperature density, flexural strength, Young’s modulus and fracture toughness of 2.6g/cm3, 331.1MPa, 139.4GPa and 2.8MPam1/2, respectively. The detailed investigation of the hot-pressed SiC/BN(C) ceramic is helpful for the further study of this material and other ceramics, targeted for the high-temperature applications.

Abstract:A novel ceramic matrix composites (CMCs): SiC-BN has been formulated and fabricated via in-situ synthetic reaction. Some of equations whose reaction products are SiC and BN have been calculated by thermodynamics, and the equation Si_3N_4+B_4C+2C=3SiC+4BN has been selected to fabricate SiC-BN CMCs, due to its easily being activated and not being affected by the subsidiary reactions through using appropriate sintering technics. Experimental results show that the reaction can finish before 1 700 ℃ and the final reaction product are β-SiC and h-BN as anticipated.

Abstract:Interphase plays an important role in determining the mechanical properties of ceramic matrix composites(CMCs).The roles of the interphase in CMCs include loading transfer,mechanical fuse,residue stress relaxation,fiber protection.The principle for the design of interphases has been proposed based upon the role of interphases.Boron nitride(BN) has similar laminar crystal structure to pyrolytic carbon but better oxidative resistance.In addition,BN also has excellent thermal resistance and chemical inertness.Moreover,the oxidative product(B2O3) can heal up micro cracks.Hence,BN has been developed as an important interphase for CMCs.The characteristics of the structure and function of BN interphase have been introduced.The study of BN interphase in SiCf/SiC,Cf/SiC,metal matrix composites,glass-ceramics matrix composites has been viewed.The relationship between the composition,structure and thickness of the interphase and the properties of the composites has been discussed.The methods for the preparation of BN interphase have been summarized.The advantages and disadvantages of the various methods have been analyzed.Construction the perfect mode for the relationship between the characteristics of interphase and the properties of composites will be the trend for the development of the study of BN interphase.The methods to obtain BN interphase with required composition and structure will be the focus for the study of BN interphase.

Abstract:The development of novel, high-temperature structural and multifunctional heat-resistant materials for service under high-temperature oxidation, severe thermal shock, ablation by combustion gas flow, and other harsh conditions has become one of the most pressing needs in the aerospace industry. Amorphous and nanocrystalline Si-B-C-N ceramic and its matrix composites have great potential applications in the fields of high-temperature structural and multifunctional heat-resistant ceramics because of their special structures and outstanding high-temperature properties. The preparation of dense Si-B-C-N ceramic bulks is greatly limited by the organic polymer precursor pyrolyzing method (organic processing route). Mechanical alloying and post-hot-pressing technologies (inorganic processing route) using inorganic powders as the raw materials were pioneered by researchers from the Institute of Advanced Ceramics at Harbin Institute of Technology about 10 years ago. The inorganic processing route, which is very simple and effective in the preparation of materials with uniform microstructures and excellent properties, has been used to obtain dense Si-B-C-N ceramic bulks and structural components resistant to high temperatures. The inorganic processing route has become an indispensable complement to the organic processing route and has resulted in improved and enriched experimental data and understanding of Si-B-C-N ceramics. Current research achievements in the field of SiBCN ceramics and their matrix composites obtained by the inorganic processing route (including microstructural characteristics, evolution laws, mechanical and thermophysical properties, the resistance to oxidation, thermal shock and ablation, and related mechanisms) are summarized and future trends are predicted.

Abstract:BN -SiC laminated composite ceramics were hot pressed using SiC and BN powder as starting materials, fracture behavior of the composite was investigated. Propagation path of the horizontal cracks were more zigzag due to the easy decohesion of the interface between the layers, so the fracture took place in a quasi - static but not catastrophic way with a relatively higher resistance to crack propagation; as a result, the opening displacement of the crack and the fracture toughness of the composite were increased remarkably.

Abstract:Porous BN/Si3N4 composite ceramics with different BN contents have been fabricated by gel casting. The rheological behaviors of the suspensions, microstructure, mechanical properties, dielectric properties and critical temperature difference of thermal shock (ΔTC) of porous BN/Si3N4 composite ceramics with different BN contents were investigated. With BN contents increasing, the mechanical properties of the porous BN/Si3N4 composite ceramics were partially declined, but the dielectric properties and thermal shock resistances were enhanced at the same time. For the porous Si3N4 ceramic without BN addition, the porosity, flexural strength, dielectric constant and critical temperature difference were 48.1%, 128MPa, 4.1 and 395°C, while for the 10vol% BN/Si3N4 porous composite ceramics, they were 49.4%, 106.6MPa, 3.8, and 445°C, respectively. The overall performance of the obtained porous BN/Si3N4 composite ceramics indicated that it could be one of the ideal candidates for high-temperature wave-transparent applications.

Abstract:Si3N4/nano-carbon black (CB) composite ceramics with boron nitride (BN) as interphase were fabricated by gelcasting. The results of scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) showed that the structures of BN interphase and BN coated CB were formed and were uniform distributed in the Si3N4 ceramic. The permittivity (ε′ε″) of BN-coated CB was obviously lower than that of the pure CB, and the impedance of the BN-coated CB particles was close to the Z0 (Z0 = 1, Z0 is impedance under vacuum) compared with that of the CB particles; therefore, electromagnetic wave can enter into the BN-coated CB particles and be dissipated due to the high conductivity of CB particles. When incorporating the BN(CB) into Si3N4 substrate, the electromagnetic wave can pass through Si3N4/nano-CB composite ceramics easily and be absorbed by CB, so the tgδ of the composite ceramic increased as the mass content of BN(CB) increased. The tgδ of the composite ceramic was about 0.43 when the content of BN(CB) increased to 15 wt%.

Abstract:In this study, the amorphous C, ZrB2, and BN single-layer coatings as well as C/BN, C/ZrB2, ZrB2/BN, and C/ZrB2/BN composite coatings were prepared on SiC fibers (SiCf) by an in situ synthesis and solution impregnation-pyrolysis method. Subsequently, SiCf/SiBCN composites were fabricated by hot-pressing sintering at 1900celcius/60 MPa/30 min to explore the influence of different coatings on the microstructure and mechanical performance of resulting composites. After the preparation of single-layer-coated SiCf, the SiCf(BN) or SiCf(ZrB2) tended to be overlapped with each other, whereas the dispersion of amorphous C-coated SiCf was satisfying. Besides, some uneven areas and attached particles have appeared on fiber surfaces of the SiCf(BN) or SiCf(ZrB2), whereas smooth and dense surfaces of amorphous C-coated SiCf were observed. Because the uniformity of ZrB2 coatings can be partially damaged by the subsequent coating process of BN, the composite coatings of ZrB2/BN and C/ZrB2/BN were thereby not suitable for strengthening SiBCN matrix. The SiCf/SiBCN composites with C/ZrB2 coatings have desirable comprehensive mechanical properties. Nevertheless, the conventional toughening mechanisms such as fiber pull-out and bridging, and crack deflection are not available for these composites because the serious crystallization of SiCf leading to great strength loss, resulting in catastrophic brittle fracture.

Abstract:The development of novel high-temperature structural and multifunctional thermal protection materials for harsh environment applications, such as high-temperature oxidation, severe thermal shock, ablation by combustion gas flow etc., is one of the urgent needs of the modern aerospace industry. Ceramic matrix composites such as Cf/(C, SiC, Si3N4), SiCf/ZrB2, SiCp/(Si3N4, HfB2) have received much attention in recent years. Coincidently, metastable silicoboron carbonitride (Si-B-C-N) ceramics and corresponding matrix composites stand out from all recent materials offering great potential at high temperatures due to their high microstructural stability and excellent high-temperature properties including resistance to oxidation, thermal shock and ablation.

Abstract:Nitride based ceramics are considered as a kind of promising material for structural and functional integration due to their robust structure, extreme environmental resistance and electromagnetically transparency. It is still challenging to prepare nitride based ceramics with homogeneous and controllable microstructure because of their low self-diffusion coefficient and difficulty in sintering. Here, we developed a gelcasting-SHS process by combining gelcasting forming and self-propagating high temperature synthesis (SHS) for the preparation of porous BN-Si3N4 composite ceramics. First, carbon residue problem in the gelcasting -SHS process was studied. Based on the result, porous BN-Si3N4 composite ceramics with high porosity (69.42 ~ 86.48%), high strength (21.7 ~ 81.0 MPa) and low dielectric constants (1.42 ~ 2.87) were synthesized. In addition, the thermal shock resistance of porous BN-Si3N4 composite ceramics until 1000 ℃ was evaluated.
