Abstract:Rh surface alloying by Mo is observed during epitaxial growth. The alloy images exhibit a ring structure. It is proposed that the dark images in the ring structure may be vacancies produced by preferential field evaporation of Mo atoms or Mo atoms that could not be seen in the Rh-Mo alloy.

Abstract:Abstract A systematic high-resolution electron microscopy study of a special type of two-dimensional defects, phason planes, has been carried out in the structurally complex metallic alloys of Al –Pd –Mn and Al –Ni –Rh. The structural characteristics of the phason planes in these two alloys consist of pentagon-banana pairs of polygons but with a different arrangement. Located on the vertex of the polygons are pseudo-Mackay atomic clusters. The detailed atomic structures of the phason planes in both ξ′- and ξ-phases of the two alloys have been determined by means of high-resolution electron microscopy and theoretical simulations. The possible ways of displacement of the phason planes in the complex alloys are discussed.
Observation of a Surface Alloying-to-dealloying Transition During Growth of Bi on Ag(111)

Abstract:The atomic structures that develop as a function of coverage during deposition of Bi on Ag(111) have been studied using low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy, low-energy electron diffraction, and ab initio calculations. The growth process involves two sequential stages. At low coverage, Bi atoms are incorporated into the topmost layer of Ag(111), resulting in the formation of an Ag2Bi alloy confined to the surface and ordered (root 3 x root 3)R30 degrees Ag2Bi islands supported on Ag(111). This mode of accommodation of Bi was found to be energetically favorable based on ab initio total-energy calculations. At coverage above a critical value of 0.55 monolayers, the Ag2Bi alloy phase gradually converts into an ordered Bi (p x root 3) overlayer structure supported on Ag(111). We postulate that the dealloying transition is likely driven by compressive strain induced by incorporation of large-size Bi atoms into Ag at a high coverage and the subsequent lack of miscibility of Ag and Bi bulk phases. After completion of the dealloying process, Bi(110) thin films can be grown epitaxially on top of Ag(111) with a chemically abrupt interface.

Abstract:In the present study, the amorphous Cr-Mo alloy was synthesised by mechanical alloying of immiscible Cr and Mo elements (Cr-35at.%Mo powders) at a temperature of similar to 260 K under Ar atmosphere. The X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy analysis showed that there was a transition between the Cr(Mo) solid solution and amorphous Cr-Mo phase during mechanical alloying. With increasing milling time, the initially formed Cr(Mo) solid solution transformed to the amorphous Cr-Mo alloy, which then transformed to Cr(Mo) solid solution once more. The underlying reason for this transition is likely the metastable nature of these two phase, i.e., solid solution and amorphous alloy.
Atomic and mesoscopic structure of Dy-based surface alloys on noble metals

Abstract:Abstract Surface alloys are a highly flexible class of low dimensional materials with the opportunity to tune and control the spin and charge carrier functionalities on the nanoscale. Here, we focus on the atomic and mesoscopic structural details of three distinct binary rare-earth-noble metals (NM) surface alloys by employing scanning tunneling microscopy and low energy electron diffraction. Using Dysprosium as the guest element on fcc(111) NM substrates, we identify the formation of non-commensurate surface alloy superstructures, which lead to homogeneous moiré patterns for DyCu 2 /Cu(111) and DyAu 2 /Au(111), while an inhomogeneous one is found for DyAg 2 /Ag(111). The local structure was analyzed for these samples and the observed differences are discussed in the light of the lattice mismatches of the alloy layer with respect to the underlying substrate. For the particularly intriguing case of a DyAg 2 surface alloy, the surface alloy layer does not show a uniform long-range periodic structure, but consists of local hexagonal tiles separated by extended domain walls, which occur likely to relieve the in-plane strain within the DyAg 2 surface alloy layer. Our findings clearly demonstrate that surface alloying is an intriguing tool to tailor the local atomic structure as well as the mesoscopic moiré structures of metallic heterostructures.

Abstract:The structure and properties of Sm overlayer and Sm/Rh surface alloy have been investigated with Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), low energy electron diffraction (LEED), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and temperature programmed desorption spectroscopy (TDS). The growth of Sm on Rh(100) at room temperature (RT) appears following the Stranski-Krastanov growth mode and only the trivalent state Sm is observed from XPS results. Thermal treatment of the Sm film at 900 K leads to the formation of ordered surface alloy which shows the c(5√2 × √2)R45° and c(2×2) LEED patterns. Annealing the Sm film at temperature above 400 K makes the binding energy (B.E.) of Sm 3d5/2 shift to higher energy by 0.7 eV, which indicates charge transfer from Sm to Rh(100) substrate, causing the increase of CO desorption temperature.

Abstract:It is well-understood that during the liquid-to-solid phase transition of alloys, elements segregate in the bulk phase with the formation of microstructures. In contrast, we show here that in a Bi–Ga alloy system, highly ordered nanopatterns emerge preferentially at the alloy surfaces during solidification. We observed a variety of transition, hybrid and crystal-defect-like patterns, in addition to lamellar and rod-like structures. Combining experiments and molecular dynamics simulations, we investigated the influence of the superficial Bi and Ga<sub>2</sub>O<sub>3</sub> layers during surface solidification and elucidated the pattern-formation mechanisms, which involve surface-catalysed heterogeneous nucleation. We further demonstrated the dynamic nature and robustness of the phenomenon under different solidification conditions and for various alloy systems. The surface patterns we observed enable high-spatial-resolution nanoscale-infrared and surface-enhanced Raman mapping, which reveal promising potential for surface- and nanoscale-based applications.

Partitioning Behavior and Lattice Misfit of Γ/γ′ Phases in Ni-based Superalloys with Different Mo Additions

Abstract:A low-density single crystal (LDS) alloy with the composition of high Mo content was designed. The extra 1.5 wt% Mo was added in the Alloy A with the composition of Ni–6.5Al–8.0Mo–2.4Cr–6.2Ta–4.9Co–1.5Re–(0.01–0.05)Y (wt%) to study the influence of Mo on the lattice parameter and partitioning behavior. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) with energy-dispersive spectrometer (EDS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and high-temperature X-ray diffraction (HT-XRD) were used to observe the microstructure, analyze the elemental content and measure the lattice parameter of the alloys. The natural lattice misfit was calculated by lattice constants which were measured by HT-XRD at the temperature from 25 to 1150 °C, and the results showed that the lattice misfit would be more and more negative with temperature increasing. It was found that 1.5 wt% addition of Mo will increase the absolute value of the lattice misfit of γ/γ′ phases and the volume fraction of γ′, and at the same time, influence the elemental distribution in γ and γ′ phases, especially Re and Cr. Re has a higher partitioning ratio ( k ) after the addition of Mo.
Ordered Alloying of Pd with the Mo(100) Surface

Abstract:The interaction of Pd with the Mo(100) surface has been studied with low-energy electron microscopy and diffraction, and first-principles total-energy calculations. Deposition of Pd at elevated temperature leads initially to the development of an intense c(2x2) diffraction pattern. Theoretical calculations demonstrate that a c(2x2) substitutional alloy is energetically favored compared to an overlayer structure at half monolayer coverage. The creation of a large number of islands upon Pd deposition is consistent with the formation of a substitutional alloy. Accommodation of Pd in excess of the ideal c(2x2) coverage leads to the formation of a c(2xn) structure (n=8,10), although with little apparent further change of surface morphology. Proliferation of antiphase domain walls in the c(2x2) alloy is proposed to explain the c(2xn) periodic structure. Theoretical calculations indicate that a pseudomorphic Pd overlayer is the most stable configuration at I monolayer coverage, and that the Pd-covered Mo(100) surface may become unstable with respect to faceting to the {112} orientations if pseudomorphic growth can be realized up to 2 monolayer coverage. However, the c(2xn) structure is found experimentally to be stable at the interface between Mo and thicker Pd overlayers. These results suggest that there is a kinetic limitation to the formation of the pseudomorphic structure and the faceting instability is preempted by the formation of more complex surface alloy structures.
Effect of Mo on the coherent interface features of γ′-phase strengthened Co-based superalloys

Abstract:Molybdenum (Mo) addition was investigated for its influence on the interfacial characteristics of γ′-phase strengthened Co-based superalloys with γ/γ′ dual phases. Advanced characterization techniques, including scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), atom probe tomography (APT), and high-resolution X-ray diffraction (HR-XRD), were employed for this purpose. Mo addition was found to increase the compositional and structural widths of the γ/γ′ interface. This was accompanied by segregation of Mo and Co at the interface, attributed to the reduction of interfacial energy. Additionally, Mo addition led to a decrease in the lattice misfit between the γ-matrix and γ′-phases. Those results enhanced interface stability, contributing to improved high-temperature stability. This study offers valuable insights into the mechanisms of alloying and the microstructural stability of Co-based superalloys.

Abstract:This study investigates the interfacial evolution of Cr/Mo-coated Zr alloys near the Mo-Zr eutectoid temperature, from the viewpoints of microstructure and chemical composition and with the joint application of XRD, TEM and EDS analyses. The experimental findings highlight significant changes in microstructure and diffusion behavior associated with the Mo-Zr eutectoid reaction. In the as-fabricated specimen, it is noted that introducing a Mo-intermediate layer results in the formation of an amorphous Cr layer at the Cr/Mo interface. In the case of the annealing temperature below the Mo-Zr eutectoid reaction, Mo interlayer effectively impedes the diffusion between Cr and Zr, thereby suppressing the formation of intermetallic compounds. However, the diffusion barrier function of Mo interlayer deteriorates when the temperature exceeds the eutectoid point, with the presence of four distinct diffusion zones, including α-Zr, β-Zr, the intermetallic compound Zr(Mo,Cr,Fe)2, and the Mo layer containing fine Zr(Mo,Cr,Fe) 2 particles. These findings underscore the critical role of Mo-interlayer in influencing the structural stability and intermetallic compound formation in Cr/Mo-coated Zr alloys, not only at the temperature regime around the eutectic reaction, but also at the temperature regime around the eutectoid reaction, which is of great necessity for the practical applications of accident tolerant fuel cladding under high temperature environment.

The microstructure of a directionalloy solidified NiAl-Cr(Mo)-Hf alloy

Abstract:The microstructure of a directionally solidified NiAl-28Cr-5.5Mo-0.5Hf eutectic alloy has been investigated by TEM. The eutectic alloy has a typical cellular structure and is composed of three phases which are NiAl matrix, layered Cr(Mo) phase, discontinuously distributed heusler phase Ni2AlHf. There is a cube-cube crystallographic relation between NiAl and Cr(Mo) phases and their grawth direction is 〈111〉. The interface between two phases is semi-coherent, at which three sets of interface dislocations exist. Two kinds of NiAl precipitate were found in Cr(Mo) phase,whereas the precipitation of Cr(Mo) phase was also found in NiAl matrix. Occationally, a cube-cube crystallographic relation was found between Heusler phase Ni2AlHf and NiAl phase.
Unveiling the Mo effect on the microstructural stability of L1 2 -strengthened chemically complex alloys

Abstract:The influence of Mo on the coarsening behavior of L1 2 -precipitates in chemically complex alloys (CCAs) was thoroughly investigated. Mo addition significantly impacted the morphology, misfit, and microstructural stability of L1 2 -precipitates during aging treatment. Mo incorporation into the B sublattice sites of L1 2 -precipitates (along with Al and Ti) increased their volume fraction and solvus temperature. It also weakened the segregation of solutes between the FCC-matrix and L1 2 -precipitates, resulting in reduced misfit. However, during the aging processing, the misfits in all three CCAs continuously increased. Quantitative analysis revealed that a misfit of approximately 0.5 % yielded cubic morphology of L1 2 -precipitate for CCAs with positive misfits. Further coarsening kinetics studies unveiled a transition from initial matrix-diffusion controlled coarsening to interface-reaction controlled coarsening. Notably, Mo addition prolonged the matrix-diffusion controlled stage and delayed the transition to interface-reaction controlled coarsening. These findings provide valuable insights that can guide future alloy design and heat treatment strategies to optimize the high-temperature structural performance of L1 2 -precipitate CCAs.

Abstract:L12 structured γ′ phase is the main strengthening phase of Ni-base superalloys, which contain multiple alloying elements. Locations of these elements in the lattice are crucial for understanding the mechanical/physical properties of γ′ phases. Here, we reveal the site occupancy of various elements in γ′ phases of two multi-component Ni-base single crystal superalloys by using advanced scanning transmission electron microscopy and energy disperse spectroscopy. Cr, Mo, Re, Ta, W and Ti atoms preferentially locate at Al sublattices, and Co and Ru atoms prefer Ni sublattices. Moreover, the addition of Ru does not affect the site occupancy of other alloying elements.
Unusual Alloying Behavior Observed in the Immiscible AgMo and AgNb Systems under Ion Irradiation

Abstract:Free energy diagrams for the AgMo and AgNb systems which have very large positive heats of formation at equi-atomic stoichiometry, + 56 and + 25 kJ/mol, respectively, were constructed which included consideration of the interfacial free energy present in multilayered films. The calculated diagrams suggested that amorphization was thermodynamically achievable in both systems despite their large positive heats of formation. In the case of AgMo multilayers containing 12 layers, the calculated predictions of amorphization favored Ag- and Mo-rich alloys, in agreement with experimental results of ion mixing conducted at liquid nitrogen temperature. Additionally, new metastable FCC Mo- and Nb-enriched phases were obtained at different irradiation doses. More interestingly, these FCC phases transformed into amorphous states after room temperature aging. This FCC to amorphous transition was also discussed by comparing the free energy of these states.
Atomic structures of epitaxial overlayers of bcc Fe on fcc Rh surfaces

Abstract:Atomic structures of epitaxial overlayers of bcc Fe on fcc Rh(111), (001), and (102) planes have been directly observed in the field ion microscope with use of nanosecond pulsed-laser heating of the surface. The conditions of epitaxial growth of superlattice layers, both from a consideration of the surface energy and of the lattice mismatch are satisfied for this system. Thus, Fe adsorption layers are grown exitaxially on these Rh surfaces. An interesting observation is that in these overlayers, many vacancies and large voids can be observed, in great contrast to other overlayers we have also studied such as those of Rh and Mo on the Pt(111) surface where no voids have been observed. The reason for the formation of these vacancies and voids is probably because of its relatively large, 7.7%, mismatch of atom sizes of Fe and Rh.
Effects of Mo Addition on Microstructure of a 4th Generation Ni-based Single Crystal Superalloy

Abstract:The effects of Mo addition on the microstructure of a 4th generation Ni-based single crystal superalloy were investigated. Mo addition significantly promoted elements Mo, W and Re partition into γ phase and enhanced absolute lattice misfit at 1100 °C. The increase of Mo concentration from 2 wt% to 4 wt% also decreased the content of eutectic islands and the segregation ratios of other alloying elements in the as-cast state, especially Re and W. After heat treatments, the size of γ′ phase and width of γ channels decreased slightly with higher Mo content. More Mo additions slightly enhanced the segregation behavior of Re while reducing the segregation behavior of Mo. However, it revealed that the primary and secondary dendrite arm spacings were barely affected by Mo addition.

Abstract:Mo is a key solid solution strengthening element that improves the mechanical properties of Ni-based superalloys, but the partitioning behavior of Mo remains controversial. Herein, we uncover the effect of Mo addition on the precipitation kinetics of the γ′ phase in Ni–(17−x) Al–x Mo at. K_Mo^γ^'/γ > 1 ) into the γ matrix ( K_Mo^γ^'/γ < 1 ) with increasing Mo concentration, which is attributed to the solubility limit of Mo in the γ′ phase as well as a decrease in the γ/γ′ lattice misfit. Meanwhile, Al and Mo preferentially occupy the Al sublattice site of the γ′–Ni3Al and form the Ni3(Al, Mo) phase in Ni–Al–Mo ternary model alloys. Furthermore, the solid solution strengthening effect increases with increasing Mo concentration because of an increase in the Mo concentration in the γ matrix. Our results provide valuable insights into understanding the effect of Mo addition to Ni-based superalloys on the coarsening kinetics of γ′ phase and elemental partitioning behavior.

Abstract:Abstract As a strong β-stabilizing alloying element, Mo has gained importance for intermetallic β/γ-TiAl alloys. In general, TiAl alloys containing a significant volume fraction of the disordered body-centered cubic β-phase exhibit improved processing characteristics during hot-working. To increase the understanding of the alloying effect of Mo, a model alloy with the chemical composition Ti-44Al-7Mo-0.1B (in at.%) was investigated. In this work, the microstructural evolution after individual heat-treatment steps was studied by means of scanning as well as conventional and in-situ transmission electron microscopy. Additionally, macro-hardness and nanoindentation measurements were conducted to study the change in hardness due to grain refinement and solid-solution hardening. The variation of the observed macro- and nano-hardness corresponds well with the microstructural evolution. The obtained grain refinement effect leads to a significant increase in the macro-hardness, whereas the increase in the average nano-hardness of the individual phases is related to solid-solution hardening.

Abstract:Phase transformation of Cu-Cr and Cu-Mo alloyed powders of different constitutes was investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and TEM. Results show that Mo mainly dissolves in Cu lattice, and the solid solubility extension of Mo in Cu by mechanical alloying is limited. As Mo content increases, Cu grain size decreases, and the saturated amount of Mo in Cu increases. Amorphous phase appears in the Cu-80%Mo alloyed powder. Cu-Cr solid solution belongs to nano grain boundary solution. The alloyed product of Cu-50wt%Cr is affected by milling intensity. Cu nano crystallites and Cr oxides are formed with high milling intensity.

Abstract:The influence of Mo (10‐40at.%) additions to Cr‐8at.%Si was systematically studied by producing arc melted alloys and analyzing the as‐cast and annealed microstructures as well as the oxidation resistances. The majority of the alloys contained a solid solution A2 matrix with the intermetallic A15 = (Cr,Mo)3Si phase. The oxidation resistance was tested by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) at 1200 °C in air for 50 and 100 h. Samples were characterized by XRD, SEM and EPMA (WDS). The studied Cr‐xMo‐8Si alloy series showed a beneficial effect of Mo on the corrosion behavior of the annealed arc melted alloys exposed at 1200 °C in air. An increased amount of A15 led to the formation of a continuous SiO2 scale beneath the Cr2O3 layer during high temperature exposure. The internal SiO2 layer inhibited further internal oxidation of the A15 phase. Prior annealing also influenced the oxidation behavior of the alloys. Higher annealing temperatures, resulted in an overall reduced fraction of the A15 phase, as well as coarsening, but also showed a more uniform size and distribution of the precipitates, which seems to benefit the formation of a protective duplex oxide scale. Cr‐25Mo‐8at.%Si annealed at 1350 °C for 100 h, showed the most promising oxidation behavior after exposure in air at 1200 °C for 100 h. For all of the investigated Mo contents, no nitridation was observed when compared to the Cr‐8Si reference composition. The oxide scale adhesion also was improved. For Mo >25 at.% no spallation was observed. Evaluation of the TGA data showed it follows the paralinear law, with both the growth rate, kp, and volatilization rate, kv, of Cr2O3 being reduced by adding 10‐25 at.% Mo. A binary Cr/Mo‐Si phase diagram was generated for the studied alloy series in order to determine accurate annealing conditions and estimate the stability range of the metastable σ phase.
