Abstract:The next generation gas cleaning system - called multiple pollutants emission control system - to remove polluting gases, heavy metals, and particles simultaneously, can be applied based on ions and radicals generated by corona plasmas. Potential applications are flue gas cleaning, odor control, inactivation of microorganisms, wastewater cleaning, synthesis gas cleaning, methane reforming, hydrogen production from fossil fuels, material surface treatment, and nano-particle generation. There are two critical issues to be overcome for large-scale industrial applications, i.e, namely the capacity and the cost of repetitive pulsed power techniques, and the total energy consumption. A discussion covers the characteristics of corona plasmas; multiple pollutants emission control; and cost evaluation of industrial plasma processing; and potential applications in odor emission control, exhaust gas cleaning, and VOC emission control. This is an abstract of a paper presented at the 98th AWMA Annual Conference and Exhibition (Minneapolis, MN 6/21-24/2005).

Abstract:Very important physical and chemical features of corona plasmas are electrons, ions and radicals generation. It is foreseen that the next generation gas cleaning system - called zero emission system, to remove polluting gases, heavy metals, and particles simultaneously, can be developed based on ions and radicals generated by corona plasmas. Potential applications are flue gas cleaning, odour control, inactivation of micro-organisms, wastewater cleaning, synthesis gas cleaning, methane reforming, hydrogen production from fossil fuels, material surface treatment, and nano-particle generation. Abstract:This paper discusses some critical issues of developing industrial streamer corona plasma systems for gas cleaning. Based on streamer generation and interaction between power sources and reactors, two energization methods, namely hybrid-pulsed power source (HPPS) and DC-superimposed, high-frequency AC oscillation (DC/AC), were developed for industrial applications. As an example, a result of an industrial investigation on odor emission abatement is presented. The data available is sufficient enough for the commercial-scale design of a corona plasma system for DeNO(x), DeSO(2), deodorization and dust removal. We foresee that by retrofitting available ESPs, plasma-based gas-cleaning systems will be applied in the near future to simultaneously remove polluting gases, heavy metals, and particles.

Abstract:For pulsed corona plasma applications, it becomes important to develop pilot systems with large average power and high-energy conversion efficiency. Since the beginning of 2000, we have been working on an industrial corona plasma system with tasks of 10-30 kW in average power and higher than 90% of total energy conversion efficiency. The pulsed-power source should have the following specifications: rise time of 10-25 ns, pulsewidth of 50-150 ns, pulse repetition rate of up to 1000 pulses per second, peak voltage pulse of 70 kV, peak current of 3.5 kA, dc bias voltage of 10-35 kV, and energy per pulse of up to 30 J. Sixteen parallel wire cylinder reactors are used to match. the source. Gas and reactor temperatures can be controlled individually with water flow around the outside of those cylinders. The system is designed for gaseous oxidation and electrostatic dust precipitation. The system has been used for up to 17 kW in average power. This paper reports the system in detail, discusses issues related to the matching between the source and the reactor, and presents an example of industrial demonstrations on odor abatement at 1000 m(3)/h. Finally, this paper also gives a general guideline for design of corona plasma systems.

Abstract:With regard to pollution emission control, there are two critical issues that are blocking corona plasma industrial applications. The first one is the capacity of repetitive pulse power techniques, and the second is the total energy consumption. Worldwide research and development on industrial corona plasma systems were very much dependant on individual empirical experience. Systems were not designed at an optimized operation. To the authors' knowledge, no group has tried to bridge the gap between the fundamental characteristics of corona plasma, chemical reactions, pulsed power generators and the corona plasma reactor. This paper discusses their recent work in developing industrial corona plasma systems for industrial applications. (4 pages)

Abstract:This paper discusses the global chemical kinetics of corona plasma-induced chemical reactions for pollution control. If there are no significant radical termination reactions, the pollution removal linearly depends on the corona energy density and/or the energy yield is a constant. If linear radical termination reactions play a dominant role, the removal rate shows experimental functions in terms of the corona energy density. If the radical concentration is significantly affected by nonlinear termination reactions, the removal rate depends on the square root of the corona energy density. These characteristics are also discussed with examples of VOC s and NO x removal and multiple processing. Moreover, this paper also discusses how to match a corona plasma reactor with a voltage pulse generator in order to increase the total energy efficiency. For a given corona reactor, a minimum peak voltage is found for matching a voltage pulse generator. Optimized relationship between the voltage rise time, the output impedance of a voltage pulse generator, and the stray capacitance of a corona reactor is presented. As an example, the paper discusses a 5.0-kW hybrid corona nonthermal plasma system for NO x removal from exhaust gases.

Abstract:This paper discusses some critical issues when developing industrial corona plasma systems. Based on streamer generation and interaction between power sources and reactors, the power conditions for streamer corona plasma generation can be basically divided into two groups, namely ultra-short and high-frequency oscillation DC/AC sources. Today, single- and multiple-switch circuit topologies become available to scale the ultra-short pulsed-power system up. DC/AC sources are being introduced into the market. With regard to processing conditions and costs of the power sources, this paper presents their advantages and drawbacks. In order to develop very large scale plasma systems, a new energization technique to integrate the power source and the reactor has been developed for energization of multiple reactors. Today, various options are available for industrial plasma applications, and the data available would be sufficient enough to carry out commercial-scale designs for both odour emission control and exhaust gas cleaning.
Optimizing Energy Efficiency for Industrial Application of Pulsed Corona Gas Cleaning Techniques

Abstract:An important topic regarding industrial application of non-thermal plasma technique: increasing the overall energy efficiency is discussed in this paper. The total energy efficiency can be subdivided into 4 steps. A new system has been developed to look at several of these steps. Measurements were performed regarding the "second step" in the energy efficiency optimization: matching between pulse source and reactor. It was shown that by increasing the voltage, higher energy efficiencies could be obtained. Also matching the reactor capacitance to the output impedance of the source and the rise-time of the generated pulses was shown to be beneficial to energy efficiency. At this moment the best efficiency (from energy storage to reactor) was about 60%. Implementation of a new pulse transformer and a DC bias voltage will result in higher efficiencies (similar to 95%, as was already observed in the past)

Abstract:Tars in fuel gases create serious obstacles for gasification. This paper describes a pulsed corona plasma system for tar removal from the fuel gas. Experiments were performed under gaseous temperatures of up to 500°C. Effects of the gaseous temperature on the electrical matching and tar removal are reported.

Abstract:Tar (heavy hydrocarbon or Poly Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH)) removal from biomass derived fuel gas is one of the biggest obstacles in its utilization for power generation. We have investigated pulsed corona as a method for tar removal. Our previous experimental results indicated an energy consumption of 200–250J/L at an optimum gas temperature of 400°C. One of the challenges in scaling up a process based on pulsed corona is the availability of high power pulsed power sources. To overcome this, a newer method of streamer corona generation by an alternative “DC/AC” power source is investigated. Energy consumption for tar removal process is used as a basis for comparing the two methods for its chemical efficiency. Results indicate the pulsed corona system and DC/AC system to have similar efficiency.

Abstract:Gas cleaning techniques using non-thermal plasma are slowly introduced into industry nowadays. Here we present a novel power modulator for the efficient generation of large volume corona plasma. No expensive high-voltage components are required. Switching is done at an intermediate voltage level of 1 kV with standard thyristors. Detailed investigations on the modulator and a wire-plate corona reactor will be presented. In a systematic way, modulator parameters have been varied. Also reactor parameters, as the number of electrodes and the electrode-plate distance have been varied systematically. The yield of O-radicals was determined from the measured ozone concentrations at the exhaust of the reactor.

Abstract:Bio-effects of non-thermal plasma include lethality of microorganisms and stimulation of mammalian cells,which brings up a series of techniques in disinfection and clinical medicine.In this paper,the applications of non-thermal plasma in medical device sterilization,water and air cleaning,as well as food and package treatment are reviewed.Commercialized plasma sterilizer for medical devices can be classified into vacuum and atmospheric pressure,the volume of the former is much larger while the latter is more simple and easy to operate.For disinfection of water,air and food,it is not yet commercialized due to its energy consumption,efficiency or chemical residues.In the last decade,the developed plasma sources and techniques for medicine are successfully applied to treatment of decayed tooth,skin,wound,and cancer,with some of them approved for clinical practice.In the future,the research focus will be identifying the interactions between plasmas and cells,and developing more effective and practical equipment for different applications.

Abstract:This paper discusses a novel plasma catalysis generation method based on back-corona discharge along porous catalyst bed reactor. The reactor consists of a high-voltage needle electrode, one floated mesh electrode, one catalyst bed and one grounded mesh electrode. Typical plasma current density is 11.88 mu A/cm(2). It can be used for ozone generation and volatile organic compounds decomposition. By using a home-made AgMnOx/Al2O3-1 catalyst, 90% of toluene is removed at the specific plasma energy density of 123 J/L. At the same time, aerosol byproducts are collected and then decomposed on the catalyst bed. Moreover, the catalyst is regenerated because of the back-corona discharge. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. Abstract:This paper discusses a high-voltage pulse generator for producing corona plasma. The generator consists of three resonant charging circuits, a transmission line transformer, and a triggered spark-gap switch. Voltage pulses in the order of 30-100 kV with a rise time of 10-20 ns, a pulse duration of 100-200 ns, a pulse repetition rate of 1-900 pps, an energy per pulse of 0.5-12 J, and the average power of up to 10 kW have been achieved with total energy conversion efficiency of 80%-90%. Moreover, the system has been used in four industrial demonstrations on volatile organic compounds removal, odor emission control, and biogas conditioning.

Abstract:This chapter reviews the state-of-the-art of power conditions for streamer–corona plasma applications. It also discusses some critical issues when developing industrial systems. Based on streamer generation and interaction between power sources and reactors, the power conditions can be divided into two groups—namely, hybrid pulsed-power system (HPPS) and DC/AC. Today, single- and multiple-switch circuit topologies have become available to scaleup the HPPS system. DC/AC sources are being introduced into the market. Over the past 20 years, pulsed corona plasma system was expected to be integrated together with electrostatic precipitator for a simultaneous removal of dusts, SO2, NOx, and heavy metals from exhaust gases. The data available would be sufficient enough for commercial-scale design for either odor-emission control or exhaust-gas cleaning. By retrofitting available electrostatic precipitation (ESP), a plasma-based gas cleaning system to simultaneously remove polluting gases, heavy metals, and particles will be applied in the near future.

Abstract:In this paper, the NO-to-NO 2 conversion in various gaseous mixtures is experimentally investigated. Streamer coronas are produced with a dc-superimposed high-frequency ac power supply (10–60 kHz). According to NO x removal experiments in N 2 +NO x and N 2 +O 2 +NO x gaseous mixtures, it is supposed that the reverse reaction NO 2 +O→NO+O 2 may not only limit NO 2 production in N 2 +NO x mixtures, but also increase the energy cost for NO removal. Oxygen could significantly suppress reduction reactions and enhance oxidation processes. The reduction reactions, such as N+NO→N 2 +O, induce negligible NO removal provided the O 2 concentration is larger than 3.6%. With adding H 2 O into the reactor, the produced NO 2 per unit removed NO can be significantly reduced due to NO 2 oxidation. NH 3 injection could also significantly decrease the produced NO 2 via NH and NH 2 - related reduction reactions. Almost 100% of NO 2 can be removed in gaseous mixtures of N 2 +O 2 +H 2 O+NO 2 with negligible NO production.

Abstract:This paper presents experimental studies on the discharge modes with AC/DC and DC power sources and different electrode configurations. Uniform and stable streamer coronas can be generated by using a multi-channel saw-tooth wire-plate reactor. Through experiments in NO abatement it is demonstrated that AC/ DC streamer plasmas exhibit very strong chemical effects. The energy cost for NO oxidation in air is about 30 eV/NO.

Abstract:The main technical challenges for the treatment of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) with plasma-assisted catalysis in industrial applications are large volume plasma generation under atmospheric pressure, byproduct control, and aerosol collection. To solve these problems, a back corona discharge (BCD) configuration has been designed to evenly generate nonthermal plasma in a honeycomb catalyst. Voltage-current curves, discharge images, and emission spectra have been used to characterize the plasma. Grade particle collection results and flow field visualization in the discharge zones show not only that the particles can be collected efficiently, but also that the pressure drop of the catalyst layer is relatively low. A three-stage plasma-assisted catalysis system, comprising a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) stage, BCD stage, and catalyst stage, was built to evaluate toluene treatment performance by BCD. The ozone analysis results indicate that BCD enhances the ozone decomposition by collecting aerosols and protecting the Ag-Mn-O catalyst downstream from aerosol contamination. The GC and FTIR results show that BCD contributes to toluene removal, especially when the specific energy input is low, and the total removal efficiency reaches almost 100%. Furthermore, this removal results in the emission of fewer byproducts.
