Abstract:The Euler equations for an isoperimetric eigenvalue problem consist of a singular SturmLiouville equation coupled to a second order nonlinear ordinary differential equation. An existence proof for solutions to the isoperimetric problem is given, thereby proving the existence of solutions to the Euler equations. Next, it is proved that for each eigenvalue any solution to these equations provides a weak relative minimum of the functional for the isoperimetric problem. The proof that this solution is unique follows from the strict convexity of this functional with respect to all admissible functions.

Abstract:This article deals with the behaviors of solutions to the initial-boundary value problem for a fourth-order parabolic equation with gradient nonlinearity. More precisely, we first get a threshold result for the solutions to exist globally or to blow up in finite time when the initial energy is subcritical and critical, and give an upper bound estimate of the lifespan. Furthermore, we derive the sufficient conditions for the existence of global and blow-up solutions for supercritical initial energy. Finally, we also give a lower bound estimate of the lifespan and obtain some estimates for blow-up rate. These results extend and improve some recent results.

Abstract:In this paper, we study uniqueness properties of solutions to the generalized fourth-order Schrödinger equations in any dimension d of the following forms, i ∂ t u + ∑ j = 1 d ∂ x j 4 u = V t , x u , and i ∂ t u + ∑ j = 1 d ∂ x j 4 u + F u , u ̅ = 0. We show that a linear solution u with fast enough decay in certain Sobolev spaces at two different times has to be trivial. Consequently, if the difference between two nonlinear solutions u 1 and u 2 decays sufficiently fast at two different times, it implies that u 1 ≡ u 2 .

Abstract:This paper is devoted to studying the existence and asymptotic behavior of solutions to a nonlinear parabolic equation of fourth order: ut+∇⋅(|∇Δu|p−2∇Δu)=f(u) in Ω⊂RN with boundary condition u=Δu=0 and initial data u0. The substantial difficulty is that the general maximum principle does not hold for it. The solutions are obtained for both the steady-state case and the developing case by the fixed point theorem and the semi-discretization method. Unlike the general procedures used in the previous papers on the subject, we introduce two families of approximate solutions with determining the uniform bounds of derivatives with respect to the time and space variables, respectively. By a compactness argument with necessary estimates, we show that the two approximation sequences converge to the same limit, i.e., the solution to be determined. In addition, the decays of solutions towards the constant steady states are established via the entropy method. Finally, it is interesting to observe that the solutions just tend to the initial data u0 as p→∞.

Abstract:This manuscript aims to investigate the existence of weak solutions for a system of partial differential equations (PDEs) described by Equation (1.2). The system consists of a set of PDEs with Leray–Lions operators and nonlinear terms. The goal is to establish the existence of at least one nontrivial weak solution and at least three weak solutions for the system. The PDEs are defined on a bounded domain in RN , with N≥3 , and subject to appropriate boundary conditions. The system involves various parameters, functions, and growth conditions that are carefully defined throughout the paper. The study focuses on understanding the behavior and existence of solutions for this system of PDEs, which has applications in physics, engineering, and other scientific fields.

Abstract:This paper deals with a 4th-order parabolic PDE involving -Laplacian in a bounded domain, subject to Neumann boundary conditions. Firstly, we show the proof of the local existence and uniqueness of weak solutions and the energy identity. The blow-up time estimates are discussed for the corresponding blow-up solutions. Secondly, we define different Nehari manifolds and the energy functional and then determine the existence of blow-up and global solutions in the subcritical, critical, super critical energy cases. Thirdly, we combine some ordinary differential inequalities and different auxiliary functions to obtain the conditions on the existence of extinction and non-extinction solutions with extinction rate and time.

Abstract:This paper is a sequel to a previous paper (Yang, Y. and Zhang, J. H. Existence of solutions for some fourth-order boundary value problems with parameters. Nonlinear Anal. 69 (2), 1364–1375 (2008)) in which the nontrivial solutions to the fourth-order boundary value problems were studied. In the current work with the same conditions near infinity but different near zero, the positive, negative, and sign-changing solutions are obtained by the critical point theory, retracting property, and invariant sets.

Abstract:In this paper we examine well-posedness for a class of fourth-order nonlinear parabolic equation $\partial_t u + (-\Delta)^2 u = \nabla \cdot F(\nabla u)$, where $F$ satisfies a cubic growth conditions. We establish existence and uniqueness of the solution for small initial data in local BMO spaces. In the cubic case $F(\xi) = \pm \lvert \xi \rvert^2 \xi$ we also examine the large time behaivour and stability of global solutions for arbitrary and small initial data in VMO, respectively.
