Abstract:A discussion on ASME reinforcement method of large openings in cylindrical shells is given. By review the stresses distribution of FEM analysis results of the large openings in cylindrical shells, we found that except for a bending moment about the vessel shell longitudinal axis there is another bending moment about the nozzle longitudinal axis, which has the same magnitude order with the ASME given bending moment. An in-plane bending model of the reinforcement ring is established. A new engineering method of reinforcement calculation of openings in cylindrical shells is proposed.

Abstract:This paper presented an analysis of the interactive relations between axial forces and biaxial bending moments at the state of plastic hinges.A simplified method was proposed to determine the interactive surfaces by a self-compiled simple computer program. Examples were presented for square and rectangular boxes filled with concrete, and simplified equations were proposed to calculate their sectional load-carrying capacity.For circular pipe filled with concrete, derivation was carried out and it was found that the equations proposed for rectangular box were also applicable for circular CFT columns.

Abstract:The sag rods in purlin systems are regarded as lateral elastic supports .C-section purlins under wind suction were analyzed using the theory of thin-walled members, whose results were compared with those of FE analysis using ANSYS plate elements .It was found that for C-section purlins under wind suction acting through midpoint of upper flange , whose horizontal reaction agreed well with that by ANSYS model , and the reaction in the sag rod was also in good agreement with ANSYS analysis , except on and near the sag rod cross section;on the cross-section of the sag rod, the stresses of the purlin were affected greatly by distorsional deformation caused by sag rod forces .For the controlling compressive stress the EC 3 approach is on the safe side , but for the controlling tensile stresses at the tip of the upper flang lip , distorsional stress should be added to the simple bending stress to achieve acceptable accuracy .

Abstract:The formulas for computing load-bearing capacity and buckling strength of circular steel tube with tapered ends and subjected to bending,axial compression and torsion are not available in current codes.An experimental investigation was carried out on such steel tube columns to analyze their load-carrying capacity,failure patterns,load-displacement curves and load-strain curves.The experimental results indicated that the failure patterns of specimens are all local buckling.The position of buckling will be changed toward inside in case a small gradient is offered,the tubes will thus gain better ductility.The members with tapered ends have better load-carrying capacity than those with the uniform cross-section.The enhancement of load-carrying capacity is directly affected by gradient of the cone,it could reach as high as 40% when the plastic hinge occurred at the interface between the cone and the middle tube.

Abstract:Ultimate yield surfaces of concrete-filled L-shaped multi-celled steel tube column (L-CFT) under biaxial bending and axial force are studied in this paper. The characteristics of the axial force-bending moment interaction curves under uniaxial bending is first revealed, while the rotational symmetry of the overall interaction curve is verified mathematically. Based on the relative positions of the elastic centroid axis and the plastic neutral axis under pure bending, six cases are identified whose interaction curves show slightly different features. The interaction curves between axial force and bending moments are grouped into two categories. Finally, the interaction surfaces of L-CFT under biaxial bending and axial force are analyzed. The characteristics of these curves are discussed and verified mathematically, and further the approximate formulas for design purpose are provided. Based on the comparative study of a large number of examples, the proposed formulas show good accuracy and are on the conservative side.

Abstract:The analysis method of reinforcements for openings in cylindrical vessels appears in the China National Standard "Pressure vessels" GB 150-2011 for the first time.The analysis method,which is based on the thin cylindrical shell theoretical solutions developed by the Chinese authors,could be applicable to d/D≤0.9.In this paper the theoretical basic is given in brief and the foundations of design rules are presented.The comparisons of the analysis method with other design methods are presented as well.

Abstract:A study on the bending strength of design of thin-walled centrifugal concrete-filled steel tubes was conducted in this study.An accurate finite element model of centrifugal concrete-filled steel tubes was developed using the finite element program ABAQUS.Centrifugal concrete-filled steel tubes different cross sections and material properties were simulated in this study.The nonlinear finite element model was verified against the experimental results.Generally the finite element model could accurately simulate the bending strength of centrifugal concrete-filled steel tubes.Parametric study was conducted to investigate specimens having concrete tubes of different grades.Current AISC standard was used to predict the bending strength of thin-walled centrifugal concrete-filled steel tubes and empirical design equations are also proposed for simplicity.It is shown that the proposed method predicted the bending strength of thin-walled centrifugal concrete-filled steel tubes well.

Abstract:A series of bending tests of thin-walled concrete-filled cold-formed steel tubes(CFST) were presented in this study. A total of 4 specimens were tested, two square specimens and two rectangular specimens, with width to wall thickness ratio ranging from 50 to 100. The failure mode and ultimate capacity of test specimens were obtained. A novel nonlinear analytical model was developed for the hin-walled CFSTs under bending. Nonlinear constitutive models of the confined concrete and steel tube, corner strength enhancement of the steel cross-sections, welding residual stress and local buckling were considered in the developed model. The predicted capacity calculated using the model proposed and it si shown that the model predictions agreed with the test result well. In addition, predictions from current AISC standard, Eurocode 4 and model proposed by other researcher were also compared with the test results.

Abstract:The mechanical performance of single diagonal lacing double-web stay members of open concrete filled steel tubes with four main elements is discussed through model tests and finite element analysis. It is shown that, (1) the web is mainly subjected to shear; (2) the influence of shear deformation should be considered when calculating the normal bending stress; (3) the axial forces applied on the lower concrete filled steel tube posts are correspondingly shared by steel tubes and concrete according to the ratio of their relative stiffnesses.

Abstract:The axial compression tests were conducted on the dodecagonal section double skinned concrete-filled steel tube short column with different diameter to thickness ratios. The specimens were fabricated by filling concrete between the inner and outer steel tubes. Both the inner and outer steel tubes were dodecagonal section. The failure mode and ultimate strengths of test specimens subjected to axial compression were obtained. It was shown that local buckling occurred for both inner and outer steel tubes. The finite element model was developed and verified against test results. The parametric study was conducted and the effect of diameter to thickness ratio on steel tubes and concrete was analyzed. The applicability of current design equations for dodecagonal section double skinned concrete-filled steel tubes was evaluated. A modified design equation was proposed,which could provide reference for the engineering design.
Nonlinear FEM Analysis on RC Structural Wall with Large Eccentric Openings

Abstract:Using finite element program ABAQUS,nonlinear FEM analysis under lateral load is performed on a three-story RC structural wall with large eccentric openings in order to investigate its shear-resisting mecha-nism and failure mode.The influence of concrete dilation angle on simulation results is discussed.Based on lateral load-drift angle relation as well as the shear stress transformation and distribution in wall and side columns,the work mechanism of RC structural wall with large eccentric openings in positive and negative loading direction is analyzed.Compared with low-cycle quasi-static test results,FEM analysis can well observe the crack-developing and failure process of the structural wall,and calculate shear-resisting stiffness and strength capacity in positive and negative loading directions.In the elastic phase,dilation angle has little influence on the strength capacity of structural wall,while in the plastic phase,the strength capacity increases with the increased dilation angle.Eccentric openings lead to different shear transfer and distribution mechanism in positive and negative loading directions.In conclusion,a reasonable value of the dilation angle ought to be set in structural wall numerical simulation.Moreover,the section size and reinforcement ratio of side columns in design should be to carefully selected to prevent shear failure under the earthquake effect.

Abstract:By assuming the neutral axis is perpendicular to the bending plane, this paper presents a general analytical solution to predict the limit bending moment for pipes with two inner surface circumferential flaws under combined internal pressure and bending moment. The circumferential stress caused by internal pressure is taken into account through Mises yield criterion. Based on the general solution, expressions for symmetrical and unsymmetrical bending with two flaws of the same size are proposed. Then the influence of perpendicularity assumption is discussed and it demonstrates that the deviation caused by perpendicularity assumption is negligible. Finite element analyses and experiments are both carried out. The results calculated by proposed expressions are found to be in good agreement with both numerical results and experimental ones. The effect of several parameters on the limit bending moment is also studied. Results reveal that circumferential stress caused by internal pressure has important influence on bending moment, and should be taken into account.

Abstract:A real-size experiment on 11 tubes was done to study the performance of centrifugal concrete-filled steel tubes under bending and torsion. This paper first introduces the relevant operating method, equipment, subjects and processes. The factors that affect deformation and stiffness and the break mechanism under different loading were studied. Experimental stress analysis showed that the values of practical critical stress of steel tubes accorded well with the MISES Yielding Rule. The correlative equation (on the bearing capacity of a structural member under bending and torsion) deduced in this study may provide valuable reference for the design of this structural member.

Abstract:Abstract Background A series of nonlinear finite element (FE) analyses was performed to evaluate the different design approaches available in the literature for design of reinforced concrete deep beam with large opening. Three finite element models were developed and analyzed using the computer software ATENA. The three FE models of the deep beams were made for details based on three different design approaches: (Kong, F.K. and Sharp, G.R., Magazine of Concrete Res_30:89-95, 1978), (Mansur, M. A., Design of reinforced concrete beams with web openings, 2006), and Strut and Tie method (STM) as per ACI 318-14 (ACI318 Committee, Building Code Requirements for Structural Concrete (ACI318-14), 2014). Results from the FE analyses were compared with the three approaches to evaluate the effect of different reinforcement details on the structural behavior of transfer deep beam with large opening. Results The service load deflection is the same for the three models. The stiffnesses of the designs of (Mansur, M. A., Design of reinforced concrete beams with web openings, 2006) and STM reduce at a load higher than the ultimate design load while the (Kong, F.K. and Sharp, G.R., Magazine of Concrete Res_30:89-95, 1978) reduces stiffness at a load close to the ultimate design load. The deep beam designed according to (Mansur, M. A., Design of reinforced concrete beams with web openings, 2006) model starts cracking at load higher than the beam designed according to (Kong, F.K. and Sharp, G.R., Magazine of Concrete Res_30:89-95, 1978) method. The deep beam detailed according to (Kong, F.K. and Sharp, G.R., Magazine of Concrete Res_30:89-95, 1978) and (Mansur, M. A., Design of reinforced concrete beams with web openings, 2006) failed due to extensive shear cracks. The specimen detailed according to STM restores its capacity after initial failure. The three models satisfy the deflection limit. Conclusion It is found that the three design approaches give sufficient ultimate load capacity. The amount of reinforcement given by both (Mansur, M. A., Design of reinforced concrete beams with web openings, 2006) and (Kong, F.K. and Sharp, G.R., Magazine of Concrete Res_30:89-95, 1978) is the same. The reinforcement used by the STM method is higher than the other two methods. Additional reinforcement is needed to limit the crack widths. (Mansur, M. A., Design of reinforced concrete beams with web openings, (2006)) method gives lesser steel reinforcement requirement and higher failure load compared to the other two methods.

Abstract:Flexural behavior of the steel tube reinforced concrete member was studied by bending test of 10 specimens.The bending strength of specimens was calculated by ultimate balance method and strap method respectively.The complete moment-curvature relationship curves of specimens were calculated by strap method.The analytical results had good agreement with the test results.Based on the test results the moment-curvature relationship curve of steel tube reinforced concrete member can be simplified as a tri-linear model.Equations of the model expressed with bending stiffness were proposed.

Abstract:It is common to meet the H-shaped member of sinusoidal webs with openings.Currently,the shear and bend-carrying capacity of H-shaped member of sinusoidal web with circular openings was rarely studied.This paper presents a finite element analysis,resulting in shearing stress distribution and amplitude on the web with opening.Accordingly an equation to predict the shear-carrying capacity of the web with openings was proposed,based on lots of FE numerical results.Finally,the bend-carrying capacity and deflection of the beam with web openings was also analyzed,as well as the influence of gaps between openings.
Non-linear Analysis on Cast Tubular T-joint Loaded by In-Plane Bending

Abstract:Designing values of bearing capacities under axial forces other than bending moments are given in the existing cast tubular joints designing specifications. But the fact is that, in most cases, it is bending moments, not axial forces that control the joint bearing capacity, which should not be neglected. So it is necessary to theoretically analysis cast joint bearing performances under bending moments. For cast T-joint, by making geometry model using solidworks, Non-linear analysis was done using Ansys, a commercial finite element programme. Parametric equations of ultimate loading capacity derived from the results of finite element analysis are presented for the usual range of basic shapes of T-joints loaded by in-plane bending. The sensitivity of the ultimate loading capacity in cast tubular joints to variation in the geometric parameters has been assessed. Besides the parameters which governing the stresses in welded joints, an additional parameter ρthat is defined by C. D. Edwards has been introduced to describe the size of fillet. In this paper, the sensitivity of ultimate loading capacity of cast tubular joints to the parameter p is presented.
