Abstract:Aim To study the chemical constituents of Buddleja lindeyana. Methods The constituents were separated and purified by different methods of chromatography, and their structures were elucidated by IR, MS and NMR. Results Three iridoid glycosides and two other compounds were isolated from Buddleja lindeyana. Their structures were elucidated to be 6-O-feruloylajugol ( 1 ), erythro-6-oxo-4′-( 3-methoxyl-4-hydroxyphenylglycol-8")-feruloylaj-ugol ( 2 ), threo-6-oxo-4′-(3-methoxyl-4-hydroxyphenylglycol-8")-feruloylajugol ( 3 ), tetra-cosanoic acid 2,3-dihydroxypropyl ester (4), and galactitol (5). Conclusion All the compounds have been isolated from this plant for the first time. Compounds 1, 2 and 3 have protective effect agains MPP+ -induced apoptosis.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE:To isolate and determine the chemical constituents from Astilbe chinensis. METHOD:Four compounds were isolated and purified by extraction and column chromatography on silica gel. The chemical structures were determined on the basis of physical-chemical evidence and extensive spectral analysis(HR-EIMS, EIMS, 13C-NMR, 1H-NMR, DEPT, 1H-1H-COSY, HMQC and HMBC). RESULT:Their structures were elucidated as beta-sitosterol palmitate I, daucosterol II beta-sitosterol III and Bergenin IV, respectively. CONCLUSION:Compound I and II were isolated from A. chinensis for the first time.

Abstract:Object To investigate the chemical constituents of Buddlejae officinalis Maxim. , the relationship between their bioactivities, and the medicinal application of the herb. Methods Various chro-matographic techniques were employed for the isolation and purification of the constituents, including silica gel, Sephadex LH-20, and pre-HPLC. The structures of 11 isolated chemical compounds were elucidated by chemical and spectral analysis (NMR, IR, UV, and MS). The aldose reductase inhibiting test and test on DNA topoisomerase Ⅳ inhibitory effect were applied to evaluate the bioactivity of both the purified compounds and the crude fraction. Results Eleven compounds were isolated from the extracts of B. offic-inalis. They are four flavones and their glycosides; apigenin (Ⅰ), linarin (Ⅱ), apigenin-7-O-α-L-rhamnopyranosyl (1-6)-β-D-glucopyranoside (Ⅲ), and luteolin-7-O-β-D-glucoside (Ⅶ); four phenylen-thanoid glycosides: verbascoside (Ⅴ), isoacteoside (Ⅵ), cistanoside F, a and b (Ⅶ-1 and 2), campneo-side Ⅱ , a and b (Ⅷ-1 and 2); three triferpenoid saponins: mimengoside A (Ⅸ), mimengoside B (Ⅹ), songaroside A (Ⅺ). Some of the them (such as Ⅱ ,Ⅲ , and Ⅵ) showed the aldose reductase inhibitory activities with a higher inhibitory rate than that of quercetin (the positive control), others (such as Ⅰ,Ⅱ , Ⅴ, Ⅵ, and Ⅺ) displayed the inhibititory activities against the DNA topoisomerase Ⅳ . Conclusion Among all the isolated compounds, Ⅲ , Ⅶ-1 and 2, Ⅷ-1 and 2, and Ⅺ are separated for the first time both from the plant and the genus. Their bioactivities of bacteriostatic and against aldose reductase with DNA topoisomerase Ⅳ as target are tested for the first time and are related to the medicinal application of B. officinalis.

As a result, a new compound (regaloside N, 1 ) and ten known phenylpropanoid compounds ( 2–11 ) were isolated from the bulbs of L . brownii . The structure of the new compound was elucidated by spectroscopy, acid hydrolysis and derivatization.

Abstract:Nine phenylethanoid glycosides were isolated from Buddleia lindleyana. On the basis of spectral analyses, their structures were elucidated to be acteoside (1), echinacoside (2), citanoside A (3), leucosceptoside A (4), leucosceptoside B (5), pedicularioside A (6), isoacteoside (7), arenariside (8), and a new compound named buddleoside A (9). The eight known compounds were isolated from this plant for the first time. The neuroprotective effects of compounds 1 (acteoside), 5, 6, 8 and 9 on the 1-methyl-4-phenylpyridinium ion (MPP+)-induced cell death in mesencenphalic neurons were investigated. Mesencenphalic neurons treated with MPP+ underwent cell death as determined by MTT assay. Simultaneous treatment with the phenylethanoid glycosides markedly attenuated MPP+- induced cytotoxicity.

Abstract:The dried flowers and inflorescences of Buddleja officinalis Maxim are used as traditional medicines in China, and aqueous extracts of the flowers have also been used since ancient times as a yellow rice colorant at local festivals. In this study, HPLC-Q-TOF-MS/MS was used to determine the overall chemical composition of this medicine-food plant. A total of 54 compounds, including 23 flavonoids, 19 phenylethanoid glycosides, 7 alkaloids and 5 other compounds, were detected in the methanol extracts of the herb using this method. Among them, 35 compounds were found firstly in this herb. HPLC fingerprints were also developed, together with a method for the simultaneous quantification of 11 constituents that could be used for quality evaluation of B. officinalis. Fingerprint analysis, using 28 characteristic fingerprint peaks, was used to assess the similarities among 12 samples collected from different geographic areas and showed that the similarity was >0.900. Simultaneous quantification of 11 markers in B. officinalis was then performed to determine consistency of quality. Additionally, the total phenolic content and antioxidant capacity of extracts of the 12 samples of B. officinalis flowers were measured using spectroscopic methods. B. officinalis was found to have good antioxidant capacity and to be a potential natural antioxidant. The highest antioxidant capacity was found in the samples from Guizhou, Sichuan and Guangxi Province. Our results provide valuable information for further understanding and exploiting the herb.

Methods Compounds were isolated by repeated silica gel chromatography and purified on Sephadex LH-20 and structures were determined by spectral analysis. Results Cypritibetquinones A and B were isolated from the ethyl acetate residue and their structures were determined as 7-hydroxy-2-methoxy-1, 4-phenanthraquinone ( 1 ) and 7-hydroxy-2,10-dimethoxy-1,4-phenanthraquinone ( 2 ), respectively, by extensive spectral analyses. Conclusion Cypritibetquinones A and B are two new phenanthraquinones.

Abstract:From the plants of the genus Isodon (Labiatae), many deterpenoids having ent-kaurene, 7,20-epoxy-ent-kaurene, 6,7-seco-ent-kaurene, 8,9-seco-ent-kaurene, 6-epi-ent-gibberelene, ent-isopimanthrene and abietene skeletons have been isolated and characterized.1These substances have shown various biological activities such as antibacterial, anitumor and cytotoxic effects2-3 etc.In a previous study of the chemical constituents of Isodon, we reported on the isolation of two new ent-kaurene diterpenoids, taibairubescensins A and B.4 During the course of our systematic search for biologically active substances from plants of the genus Isodon, recently, we examined diterpenoid constituents of Isodon Japonica (Burm.f.) Hara (Labiatae) collected from Taibai Mountain, China, and isolated a new diterpenoid, named taibaijaponicain E (1), along with four known compounds, norhendosin A (2), nodosin (3), rabdophyllin G (4), lasiodin (5).We report here the isolation and structure elucidation of new compound by a combination of NMR techniques, including DEPT, HMBC and NOESY.

Abstract:A novel bibenzyl, a new bibenzyl, two new phenanthrenes, and a new lignin glycoside, namely longicornuol A (1), 4-[2-(3-hdroxyphenol)-1-methoxyethyl]-2,6-dimethoxyphenol (2), 5-hydroxy-7-methoxy-9,10-dihydrophenanthrene-1,4-dione (3), 7-methoxy-9,10-dihydrophenanthrene-2,4,5-triol (4) and erythro-1-(4-O-beta-D-glucopyranosyl-3-methoxyphenyl)-2-[4-(3-hydroxypropyl)-2,6-dimethoxyphenoxy]-1,3-propanediol ( 5), together with 14 known compounds, were isolated from the stems of Dendrobium longicornu. All structures were elucidated by spectroscopic methods (NMR, MS, UV and IR). Anti-platelet aggregation activities of compounds 1 - 5 were also tested.

Abstract:Buddleia indica Lam is an evergreen African shrub, native to Madagascar. Botanical investigations were done on the entire fresh plant leaves, old and young roots and stems, their histological sections as well as air-dried finely powdered samples. Genetic profiling and DNA fingerprinting were accomplished using RAPD-PCR technique (Random Amplified Polymorphic DNR- Poymerase Chain Reaction). Preliminary metabolic screening was performed using high performance thin layer chromatography (HPTLC) analysis. Botanical study of Buddleia indica revealed the presence of non –glandular 4-armed stellate trichomes, cruciferous stomata in the leaves, and the existence of U- shaped median vascular strand accompanied by small accessory bundles in the wings of its petiole all showed its close similarity to the Buddleioideae. Additionally, the cork in the stem that arouses from the pericycle (pericylic cork) and the pericycle which forms a loose ring of fibers surrounding the collateral vascular bundles are common characteristic among the members of Buddleioideae On the genetic level, it can be concluded that the most discriminative and relevant fragment resulting from the successful combination of template and primer was that produced by two primers OPA-09 and OPA-06 followed by OPA-07 RAPD primers attributing to the generation of 14, 13 and 12 amplified DNA fragments. Examination of HPTLC chromatograms of the leaves methanol extract showed ten major spots existing at different percentages that give bluish green color upon spraying with ferric chloride solution indicating its richness by phenolic compounds. Buddleia indica is rich in phenolic compounds and it belongs to Buddleioideae owing to the botanical resemblance.
