Abstract:Solid solutions breaking through the bottleneck of traditional transition metal carbides (TMC) can serve in complex environments which require appropriate density and good mechanical and dielectric properties. Nevertheless, their fabrication usually needs pressure-assisted high-temperature synthesis strategies. In response to this situation, full-spectrum compositional (Ti x Ta1-x )C solid solutions (0 < x < 1) were fabricated via annealing the mixed TiC, TaC, and Co powders at 1500 °C in argon. Thermodynamic calculation and experimental findings confirmed the dissolution-precipitation formation mechanism that Co promoted mass transport via generating Co-Ti-Ta fluid compared with the intrinsic slow solid diffusion. All samples possessed a {100} plane-exposed microcuboid morphology with homogeneous element distribution and a carbon vacancy (VC) concentration of 0.08. The electronic structure and bonding characteristic of (Ti x Ta1-x )C can be significantly modified by tuning Ti/Ta ratio and VC concentration, which further influence the density, hardness, and dielectric parameters. For instance, solid solution hardening was observed, among which (Ti0.6Ta0.4)C possessed optimal hardness (44.25 GPa). Besides, low dielectric parameters induced by the low conductivity, low carbon vacancy concentration, and unique cuboid morphology with smooth surfaces contributed to the enhanced microwave transparent performance. Specifically, the transmittance of (Ti0.5Ta0.5)C exceeded 90% in 2–18 GHz at a thickness of 1.5 mm.
