Abstract:We observed Pt nanoparticles on carbon nanohorn aggregates by annular dark-field scanning confocal electron microscopy (ADF-SCEM) with an aberration-corrected microscope for three-dimensional (3D) imaging. The object elongation length along an optical axis that corresponds to the depth resolution was independent of the lateral size. Furthermore, the nanoparticle elongation length was reduced to 34 nm as compared with that by an uncorrected microscope. Hence, aberration-corrected ADF-SCEM provides structural information not only on the nanoparticles but also on the large carbon supports such as projecting nanohorns and hollow structures. Finally, aberration-corrected ADF-SCEM is effective for the 3D analysis of nanoparticle-supported composites.

Abstract:In the past 15 years, the advent of aberration correction technology in electron microscopy has enabled materials analysis on the atomic scale. This is made possible by precise arrangements of multipole electrodes and magnetic solenoids to compensate the aberrations inherent to any focusing element of an electron microscope. Here, we describe an alternative method to correct for the spherical aberration of the objective lens in scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) using a passive, nanofabricated diffractive optical element. This holographic device is installed in the probe forming aperture of a conventional electron microscope and can be designed to remove arbitrarily complex aberrations from the electron's wave front. In this work, we show a proof-of-principle experiment that demonstrates successful correction of the spherical aberration in STEM by means of such a grating corrector (GCOR). Our GCOR enables us to record aberration-corrected high-resolution high-angle annular dark field (HAADF-) STEM images, although yet without advancement in probe current and resolution. Improvements in this technology could provide an economical solution for aberration-corrected high-resolution STEM in certain use scenarios.

Abstract:Scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM) has enjoyed a recent surge in activity for two reasons. A long awaited improvement in the STEM performance of conventional TEM/STEM instruments coincided with the advent of aberration correction. This improvement was not for any fundamental reason — from the principle of reciprocity, the STEM resolution should be at least as good as the TEM resolution for the same objective lens. Lattice resolution high angle annular dark field (HAADF) STEM images are now a much more routine part of the analytical arsenal applied to materials characterisation.

Abstract:The localized defect of Au-Pd bimetallic heterogeneous nanoparticles catalyst was investigated using HRTEM and aberration-corrected HRSTEM. The phase plates were calculated from the aberration coefficients of the measured probe tableau for various outer tilt angle of the optical axis and the accuracy required for the compensation of the various residual aberration coefficients in order to achieve subangstrom resolution with the electron optics system was evaluated up to the fifth order aberrations. It is found that the interplanar spacing of the Au-Pd nanoparticle (1 1 1) planes observed along the [1 1 0] zone axis was approximately 0.24 nm measured by HRTEM. In addition, the HRSTEM HAADF image demonstrated that the twin boundaries on the surfaces of heterogeneous nanoparticles catalysts at atomic scale. These defects might be introduced during the growth to alleviate the internal stress caused by the 4.6% lattice mismatch of Au-Pd bimetallic system. Current research could be applied to the study of active sites in nanocatalysts. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Monolayer-protected (MP) Au clusters present attractive quantum systems with a range of potential applications e.g. in catalysis. Knowledge of the atomic structure is needed to obtain a full understanding of their intriguing physical and chemical properties. Here we employed aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (ac-STEM), combined with multislice simulations, to make a round-robin investigation of the atomic structure of chemically synthesised clusters with nominal composition Au(SCHCHPh) provided by two different research groups. The MP Au clusters were "weighed" by the atom counting method, based on their integrated intensities in the high angle annular dark field (HAADF) regime and calibrated exponent of the Z dependence. For atomic structure analysis, we compared experimental images of hundreds of clusters, with atomic resolution, against a variety of structural models. Across the size range 123-151 atoms, only 3% of clusters matched the theoretically predicted Au(SR) structure, while a large proportion of the clusters were amorphous (i.e. did not match any model structure). However, a distinct ring-dot feature, characteristic of local icosahedral symmetry, was observed in about 20% of the clusters.
On the Structural Origin of the Catalytic Properties of Inherently Strained Ultrasmall Decahedral Gold Nanoparticles

Abstract:A new mechanism for reactivity of multiply twinned gold nanoparticles resulting from their inherently strained structure provides a further explanation of the surprising catalytic activity of small gold nanoparticles. Atomic defect structural studies of surface strains and quantitative analysis of atomic column displacements in the decahedral structure observed by aberration corrected transmission electron microscopy reveal an average expansion of surface nearest neighbor distances of 5.6 percent, with many strained by more than 10 percent. Density functional theory calculations of the resulting modified gold d-band states predict significantly enhanced activity for carbon monoxide oxidation. The new insights have important implications for the applications of nanoparticles in chemical process technology, including for heterogeneous catalysis.

Abstract:The highly dispersed metal (e.g. Au) nanoparticles have exhibited exceptional catalytic activity for several reactions, including CO oxidation. Their high catalytic activity has been attributed to nanoparticles nano-structural effects (including cluster thickness, shape, chemical information, and number of atoms of the cluster). The three dimensional exact structure and chemical bonding state of these supported nanoparticles is still challenging to be quantified by conventional methods due to their limitations in understanding size distribution of supported metal nanoparticles that are usually less than 1 nm (< 100 atoms). In this paper, the structure of Au heterogeneous catalysts has been successfully characterized by High Resolution Electron Microscopy (HREM), Z-contrast Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy (STEM). The ligand protected Au 13 nanoparticles on TiO 2 support have been studied by ozone and thermal treatments to remove the ligands. The ozone removal method results in the truncated cuboctahedral structure while the thermal treatment results in the cuboctahedral structure. The ozone treatment yields less Au nanoparticles sintering than thermal treatment. Their FCC structure was confirmed by quantified Z-contrast STEM, HREM and its Fourier transformation.

Abstract:The intricate 3D geometric shape and surface atomic structure of nanoporous gold catalysts are investigated using aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy in combination with discrete tomography. The real-space 3D atomic configurations illustrate geometrically necessary surface defects on the curved surface of the NPG, offering atomic insights into the catalysis of the nanoporous catalyst.

Abstract:Nanocluster structures It is difficult to determine the three-dimensional structure of ultrasmall nanoparticles as they are unstable and tend to interact with any incident electron beams used to examine them. Now, using aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy coupled with imaging simulation, the size, shape, orientation and atomic arrangement of specially prepared size-selected gold nanoclusters have been determined to single-atom resolution. The particles were preformed in the gas phase and soft-landed on an amorphous carbon substrate. These materials are of interest for catalytic and biological applications.

Abstract:In the past decade, the development of single particle-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (SP-ICPMS) has revolutionized the field of nanometallomics. Besides differentiation between dissolved and particulate metal signals, SP-ICPMS can quantify the nanoparticle (NP) number concentration and size. Because SP-ICPMS is limited to characterization of NPs in solution, we show how solid sampling by laser ablation (LA) adds spatial-resolution characteristics for localized NP analysis in biomaterials. Using custom-made gelatin standards doped with dissolved gold and commercial or synthesized gold nanoparticles, LA-SP-ICPMS conditions such as laser fluence, beam size, and dwell time were optimized for NP analysis to minimize NP degradation, peak overlap, and interferences from dissolved gold. A data-processing algorithm to retrieve the NP number concentration and size was developed for this purpose. As a proof-of-concept, a sunflower-root-sample cross-section, originating from a sunflower plant exposed to gold NPs, was successfully imaged using the optimized LA-SP-ICPMS conditions for localized NP characterization.

Abstract:The multi-dimensional potential energy surface (PES) of a nanoparticle, such as a bare cluster of metal atoms, controls both the structure and dynamic behaviour of the particle. These properties are the subject of numerous theoretical simulations. However, quantitative experimental measurements of critical PES parameters are needed to regulate the models employed in the theoretical work. Experimental measurements of parameters are currently few in number, while model parameters taken from bulk systems may not be suitable for nanosystems. Here we describe a new measurement methodology, in which the isomer structures of a single deposited nanocluster are obtained frame-by-frame in an aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscope (ac-STEM) in high angle annular dark field (HAADF) mode. Several gold clusters containing 309 ± 15 atoms were analysed individually after deposition from a mass-selected cluster source onto an amorphous carbon film. The main isomers identified are icosahedral (Ih), decahedral (Dh) and face-centred-cubic (fcc) (the bulk structure), alongside many amorphous (glassy) structures. The results, which are broadly consistent with static ac-STEM measurements of an ensemble of such clusters, open the way to dynamic measurements of many different nanoparticles of diverse sizes, shapes and compositions.

Abstract:Ultra-small gold nanoclusters were synthesized via a ligand exchange method and deposited onto different TiO2 supports to study their properties. STM imaging revealed that the as-synthesized gold nanoclusters had 2-D morphology consisting of monolayers of gold atoms. Subsequent XPS, XAFS, and CO oxidation TPD results indicated that heat treatments of gold clusters at different temperatures significantly altered their electronic and catalytic properties due to ligand deprotection and cluster agglomeration.
