Abstract:A Ku-band helix space traveling wave tube is designed in this paper. The output power, gain, and electronic efficiency are guaranteed by using pitch gradient technology. Then a four-stage multistage depressed collector is designed to achieve efficient recovery of the electron beam. In the simulation design, the output power is more than 250W in the working frequency band(1GHz) Meanwhile, collection efficiency of the center frequency can be more than 80%, except for the sharp decrease at high frequency that reaches 75.58%. The total efficiency is estimated to reach 74% in the working frequency band. A tube based the scheme is being processed and assembled.

Abstract:This paper describes the development of a K-band space traveling-wave tube (TWT) at the Aerospace Information Research Institute, Chinese Academy of Sciences (AIRCAS). This K-band space TWT can produce more than 65-W continuous-wave output power and 60% minimum overall efficiency in the operating frequency band. It achieves a compact size less than 260mm (L) x 60mm (W) x 70mm (H) and weighs less than 0.85kg.

Abstract:A Ka-band traveling wave tube (TWT) with an output power above 5kw, an electronic efficiency above 10% in the bandwidth of 33–37GHz was designed. The structure of slow wave adopts folded waveguide. The folded waveguide TWT has a saturated gain of 43.5dB, peak power of 6.7kW and electronic efficiency of 10.54% at 35GHz. We also have designed the electronic optical system, simulation results show the electron gun voltage is 28Kv, and transmitted beam current is 2.54A.

Abstract:A detailed development of a $G$ -band continuous-wave (CW) traveling-wave tube (TWT) with a 160-GHz $\cdot \text{W}$ product of bandwidth power is reported in the present work, in which the electron optics system (EOS), the tapered phase velocity folded waveguide (TPVFW) slow wave structure (SWS), the modified pill-box window (MPBW), and experimental results are described. The prototype of the proposed TWT is fabricated with optimized structural parameters obtained by particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations. Moreover, the experimental results show that TWT with 27-W output power at the frequency of 220 GHz at 100% duty cycle is obtained at the operation voltage of 17.1 kV and the current of 62 mA. The proposed $G$ -band TWT will have broad applications in far-distance high-resolution imaging and large communications capacity.

Abstract:In this paper, a high-power Ka-band traveling-wave tube (TWT) driven by a sheet electron beam is proposed and demonstrated by means of the simulation and experimental methods. The single grating rectangular waveguide with large width-to-height ratio is used as the slow-wave structure (SWS). An $E$ -plane bend energy coupler is put forward to feed this wide SWS. An irregular transition structure between the input waveguide and the SWS is suggested and designed, which is beneficial to suppress the self-excited oscillation. For a practical electron beam (20 mm $\times \,\, 1$ mm, 150.1 kV, 850 A, and 20-ns), the output power of this single rectangular grating sheet beam TWT is larger than 750 kW from 34.5 to 35.4 GHz. The maximum power is 1.21 MW at 35 GHz, corresponding to a gain of 20.4 dB.

Abstract:A pseudo-periodic helix slow wave structure (SWS) is proposed to provide high output power with wide bandwidth in Ka-band. The support rods with curved metal provide flat dispersion and high interaction impedance, while a pseudo-periodic SWS suppresses backward oscillation and improves output power. The simulation results show that the traveling wave tube (TWT) with this pseudo-periodic helix SWS produces an average output power of more than 600 W in the frequency range from 26 to 36 GHz with beam voltage and beam current of 11.287 kV and 0.3 A, respectively, with a maximum output power of 700 W at 31 GHz, corresponding to a maximum gain of 42.8 dB and an electronic efficiency of 20.5%. The multiphysics analysis reveals the influence of the high-frequency losses on the temperature distribution in the operating condition. The results indicate that the maximum temperature in the last 15 circles is concentrated at the end of the pseudo-period helix SWS with a peak temperature of 304 °C, resulting in better heat dissipation performance, easier structural fabrication, and less deformation.

Abstract:The paper describes the design of an X-band coupled-cavity traveling-wave tube (CC-TWT) based on the ridge-loaded staggered single-slot rectangular coupled-cavity slow wave structure (SWS) using High Frequency Structure Simulator (HFSS) and particle-in-cell (PIC) code in Computer Simulation Technology (CST) Particle Studio. The working frequency range is from 8.6 to 9.5 GHz. The ridge can concentrate the longitudinal electric field in the structure so that the CC-TWT can produce 29.6 kW of saturated output power at 9 GHz with an electronic efficiency of 22.3 percent and a gain of 44.7 dB when the beam voltage is set to 26.9 kV and the beam current is set to 5 A.

Abstract:This brief presents the development of an -band (71–76 GHz) continuous wave (CW) space traveling wave tube (TWT) with substantial performance improvement. This tube was designed using modified folded waveguide (FWG) and dynamic phase velocity tapering (DVT) circuits, together with four-stage depressed collectors made of graphite. Based on calculation and simulation data, a prototype -band space TWT was fabricated, with the testing conducted at a relatively lower beam voltage of 14.1 kV and current of 70.3 mA. The test results show the prototype is capable of providing output power up to 106 W, gain of 41 dB and overall efficiency of 52%, at 71–76 GHz. It is also found within the 5 GHz bandwidth, the electronic efficiency is over 10.6%, while a maximum saturated output power reaches 122 W, with a corresponding overall efficiency of 55%. Given the above data, attained at the relatively lowered operating voltage and current, it is believed the overall performance of this -band TWT exhibits a substantial improvement as compared to those of the reported similar tubes.

Abstract:Background: A W-band Sheet Electron Beam (SEB) Traveling-Wave Tube (TWT) based on Three-Slot Staggered-Ladder (TSTL) Coupled-Cavity Slow-Wave Structure (CC-SWS) is proposed in this paper. Methods: The high-frequency characteristics of TSTL CC-SWS are analyzed in detail. Well-matched input/output couplers that solve the problem of energy coupling between the SWS and the external circuit are designed. In addition, a Small Tunable Periodic Cusped Magnet (STPCM) system is used to focus the SEB, which is predicted to exhibit 100% beam transmission efficiency. Finally, the beam-wave interaction was studied with CST particle studio. Results: The results show that the SEB TWT can produce output power over 1.27kW within the bandwidth ranging from 90GHz to 99.5GHz, and the maximum output power is 2.8kW at 96.5GHz, corresponding to the maximum electronic efficiency of 11%.

Abstract:A novel slotted helix slow-wave structure（SWS） is proposed to develop a high power,wide-bandwidth,and high reliability millimeter-wave traveling-wave tube（TWT）.This novel structure,which has higher heat capacity than a conventional helix SWS,evolves from conventional helix SWS with three parallel rows of rectangular slots made in the outside of the helix tape.In this paper,the electromagnetic characteristics and the beam-wave interaction of this novel structure operating in the Ka-band are investigated.From our calculations,when the designed beam voltage and beam current are set to be 18.45 kV and 0.2 A,respectively,this novel circuit can produce over 700-W average output power in a frequency range from 27.5 GHz to 32.5 GHz,and the corresponding conversion efficiency values vary from 19% to 21.3%,and the maximum output power is 787 W at 30 GHz.

Abstract:The W-band staggered double vane Slow Wave Structure (SWS)Travelling Wave Tube (TWT) adopting the negative phase-velocity tapering technique is proposed and investigated in this paper, benefiting the improvement of the output power. The input/output coupler, which uses resonators to feed electromagnetic waves into SWS, for this kind of SWS are put forward. It is not only simple to manufacture, but also greatly reduces the longitudinal size of the TWT. In this paper, the high frequency characteristics, transmission characteristics and beam-wave interaction are analyzed by simulation software. The particle-in-cell results show that its output power and gain at 91 GHz can reach 1800 W and 10.5 dB, respectively. Its 3-dB bandwidth is from 87 GHz to 96 GHz. Based on these, the experiment of the fabricated high frequency system with filleted staggered double vane slow wave structure is carried out.

Abstract:A slotted piecewise sine waveguide (SPWSWG) is suggested as the slow wave structure (SWS) to develop the terahertz traveling wave tube (TWT). This letter is the first to report the SPWSWG SWS with the advantages of flat dispersion and large coupling impedance from our calculation. Based on this novel SWS, a wideband 220-GHz TWT has been designed, fabricated and tested. The cold test results show that the reflection parameters at the input and output port of the TWT are less than −15.2 dB in the frequency range of 209–235 GHz. Moreover, the hot test results demonstrate that the maximum saturated output power reaches 28.6 W at 215 GHz and the 3-dB bandwidth exceeds 15.5 GHz, which are basically consistent with the simulation results.

Abstract:A double-ridge-loaded folded waveguide (DRL-FW) travelling wave tube (TWT) based on period-tapered structure is proposed. Through analysing the dispersion characteristics of the DRL-FW slow wave structure (SWS), the physical mechanism of the band-edge oscillation is obtained. Period-tapered SWS is proposed and analysed for verifying the feasibility in suppressing upper-band-edge oscillation and increasing the output power. Then the electromagnetic characteristics and the beam-wave interaction of TWT based on the period-tapered DRL-FW SWS are investigated. The calculation results predict that it potentially could provide continuous wave power over 600W from 29 GHz to 32 GHz without upper-band-edge oscillation. The bandwidth expands from 29-31GHz to 29-32GHz and electron efficiency is increased from more than 8.3% to more than 11%, while the range of operating voltage expands from 22kV-22.5kV to 22kV-24kV. The corresponding saturated gain can reach over 36.8 dB. In addition, we have carried out experimental tests on the transmission characteristics of period-tapered DRL-FW SWS. The cold test results show that the voltage stand-wave ratio (VSWR) is below 1.8 in the range of 29-32GHz. Good transmission characteristics greatly reduce the risk of reflection wave oscillation, thus improving the stability of DRL-FW TWT.

Abstract:A Ka-band Traveling-Wave Tube was Fabricated with Folded Waveguide as its slow wave structure. When the beam voltage is 24 KV and the beam current is 0.4 A, respectively. The test result show it can produces over 500 W of saturable output power with more than 2.5 GHz bandwidth. It is the first time the folded wave guide TWT reached more than 500 W at Ka band and also the first device to obtain such high level power source at Ka band with more than 2.5 GHz bandwidth. Our experiment shows that the folded waveguide will be a great challenge type of high power millimeter source compare with helix TWT and coupled cavity TWT. Because this TWT can be easily manufactured and assembled with high power and broad bandwidth output, it is hopeful to take part of the helix TWT and coupled cavity TWT and in some application field as a high power millimeter source..

Abstract:A sheet beam traveling-wave tube (SBTWT) with the center frequency of 220 GHz is introduced, known for its advantages in high power, wide bandwidth, high gain, and high efficiency, and it is an indispensable component in high-power G-band amplifiers. The SBTWT is designed with a “ T “-shape staggered double-vane slow-wave structure (SWS), offering the technical benefits of low loss and wide bandwidth. It incorporates a centralized attenuator to enhance its gain capacity. To achieve high-power output, a large current density sheet beam electron gun using a scandate cathode is utilized as the free electron source. And a tunable periodic cusped magnetic (PCM) focusing system is employed to focus the sheet beam, ensuring its stable and long-distance transmission through SWS. This research also explores a depressed collector to recover the energy of “residual electrons”, thus improving the efficiency of the SBTWT. PIC simulation results indicate that at 220 GHz, the SBTWT can generate a saturated output power of 206 W, with a 3 dB bandwidth exceeding 50 GHz, and a gain over 31 dB. These components, such as the sheet beam electron gun, “T“-shape staggered double-vane SWS, tunable PCM focusing system, depressed collector, input and output couplers were fabricated and tested. Then, the SBTWT was assembled and the sheet beam transmission experiment was carried out. These research efforts pave the way for the application of sheet beam TWTs in pivotal fields such as deep space communication, radar detection, imaging, and high-speed data communication.

Abstract:A Ka-band sheet beam high power traveling wave tube based upon sine waveguide slow wave structure is studied. In this paper, phase velocity tapering technology is applied to improve electronic efficiency. The simulation result of beam wave interaction turns out that the output power is higher than 4000 W and the gain is more than 23 dB ranging from 27 GHz to 31 GHz with synchronous voltage of 29.1 kV and operation current of 800 mA.

Abstract:A novel slow wave structure (SWS), named staggered double corrugated waveguide (SDCW), is proposed for the development of wideband high-power terahertz (THz) traveling wave tubes (TWTs). The SDCW-SWS not only has the wideband characteristic of staggered double grating (SDG) but also has the high interaction impedance characteristic of symmetrical double grating. In addition, its tunnel width is independent of the lower cutoff frequency and can be further increased. Numerical Eigen mode calculations show that, under the same dispersion, the passband of SDCW-SWS is increased by more than 10 GHz compared with SDG-SWS, and the average interaction impedance at 195 GHz is increased by about 62%. A particle-in-cell simulation analysis confirms that the average output power, saturated gain, and electron efficiency of SDCW-TWT at 195 GHz are ~110 W, ~20.34 dB, and ~5.46%, respectively, when the operating voltage is 20 kV and the beam current is 100 mA. Therefore, SDCW is a promising slow wave circuit of wideband high-power THz traveling wave amplifier.

Abstract:A W-band TWT based upon flat-roofed sine waveguide slow-wave structure is designed. The transmission characteristics of high frequency structure with input/output window show that the S 21 is more than -4 dB and S 11 is less than -16 dB. The beam-wave interaction results show that the output power is more than 40 W range from 90 GHz to 100 GHz with voltage of 19 kV and current density of 50 mA/cm 2 .

Abstract:A Q-band continue wave Traveling-Wave Tube was design with Folded Waveguide as its slow wave structure. When the beam voltage is 20KV and the beam current is 0.15A, respectively, the simulation shows it can produce over 200 watts of saturable output power within 43.5-45.5GHz. Some important components including slow wave structure, attenuator magnetic system and collector was analysis and fabricated. The design and fabrication show this type TWT can be easily manufactured and assembled with high power and broad bandwidth output.
